Band and Impurity States in Dimond with the (MV){sup –} (M = Si, Ge, Sn) Centers Based on ab Initio Calculations

Ab initio calculations were used to determine the structure, electronic zone dispersion, partial (atomic and orbital) densities of states, and levels of impurity–vacancy cluster (MV){sup –} (M = Si, Ge, Sn) in diamond. Wavefunctions were determined in the density functional theory approximation using hybrid exchange-correlation functional, localized basis set of Gaussians, and a supercell consisting of 192 atoms. Results are compared with data on undoped diamond and with experimental results. The dependence of the direct and indirect energy gap on the cluster type is discussed. Calculations are carried out taking into account the spin–orbit interaction to identify impurity levels in the valence band. The effect of electron–electron interaction on the position of impurity levels is discussed. The dominant contribution of the d orbitals to the density of states at the impurity level in all clusters is detected.

Electronic Structure, Mechanical and Dynamical Stability of Hexagonal Subcarbides M{sub 2}C (M = Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt): Ab Initio Calculations

Ab initio calculations were used to study the properties of a series of hexagonal (Fe{sub 2}N-like) subcarbides M{sub 2}C, where M = Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt, and to calculate their equilibrium structural parameters, electronic properties, phase stability, elastic constants, compression modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, compressibility, Pugh’s indicator, Poisson ratio, elastic anisotropy indices, and also hardness, Debye temperature, sound velocity, and low-temperature heat capacity. It is found based on these results that all the subcarbides are mechanically stable; however, their formation energies E{sub form} are positive with respect to a mixture of d-metal and graphite. In addition, the calculation of the phonon spectra of these subcarbides shows the existence of negative modes, which indicates their dynamical instability. Thus, a successful synthesis of these subcarbides at normal conditions is highly improbable.

Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism in V-Doped FmP Binary Monopnictide Compounds: an Ab Initio Calculations

The ab initio calculations of the structural phase stability, magnetic phase stability, and electronic and magnetic properties of the FmP binary monopnictides and the half-metallic ferromagnetic properties of their Fm{sub 1−x}V{sub x}P (for x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1)-doped alloys have been assured through the spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT), and they are performed by employing the full-potential linearized augmented plane waves plus local orbitals (FP-L/APW + lo) method that is implemented in the WIEN2k package. The exchange and correlation potential is parameterized by the generated gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) scheme. According to the studies of the magnetic phase stability, the fermium monopnictides (FmP) have a paramagnetic regime, while the ferromagnetic behavior appears when we dope this compound with vanadium. Through the ferromagnetic character of all Fm{sub 1−x}V{sub x}P alloys, the spin-polarized band structures and densities of states exhibit a nearly half-metallic character of Fm{sub 0.75}V{sub 0.25}P alloy, whereas Fm{sub 0.50}V{sub 0.50}P, Fm{sub 0.25}V{sub 0.75}P, and VP compounds showed metallic character. Moreover, the total magnetic moment of the three ternary alloys is mainly contributed by Fm and V elements, where the p-d hybridization reduces the atomic magnetic moment of V element from its free space charge and produces feeble magnetic moments on the nonmagnetic P sites.

Chromospheric heating by acoustic shocks - A confrontation of GHRS observations of Alpha Tauri (K5 III) with ab initio calculations

We compare ab initio calculations of semiforbidden C II line profiles near 2325 A with recently published observations of the inactive red giant Alpha Tau (K5 III) obtained using the GHRS on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Our one-dimensional, time-dependent calculations assume that the chromosphere is heated by stochastic acoustic shocks generated by photospheric convection. We calculate various models using results from traditional (mixing length) convection zone calculations as input to hydrodynamical models. The semiforbidden C II line profiles and ratios provide sensitive diagnostics of chromospheric velocity fields, electron densities, and temperatures. We identify major differences between observed and computed line profiles which are related to basic gas dynamics and which are probably not due to technical modeling restrictions. If the GHRS observations are representative of chromospheric conditions at all epochs, then one (or more) of our model assumptions must be incorrect. Several possibilities are examined. We predict time variability of semiforbidden C II lines for comparison with observations. Based upon data from the IUE archives, we argue that photospheric motions associated with supergranulation or global pulsation modes are unimportant in heating the chromosphere of Alpha Tau.

The Anharmonic Force Field of Ethylene, C2H4, by Means of Accurate Ab Initio Calculations

The quartic force field of ethylene, C2H4, has been calculated ab initio using augmented coupled cluster, CCSD(T), methods and correlation consistent basis sets of spdf quality. For the C-12 isotopomers C2H4, C2H3D, H2CCD2, cis-C2H2D2, trans-C2H2D2, C2HD3, and C2D4, all fundamentals could be reproduced to better than 10 per centimeter, except for three cases of severe Fermi type 1 resonance. The problem with these three bands is identified as a systematic overestimate of the Kiij Fermi resonance constants by a factor of two or more; if this is corrected for, the predicted fundamentals come into excellent agreement with experiment. No such systematic overestimate is seen for Fermi type 2 resonances. Our computed harmonic frequencies suggest a thorough revision of the accepted experimentally derived values. Our computed and empirically corrected re geometry differs substantially from experimentally derived values: both the predicted rz geometry and the ground-state rotational constants are, however, in excellent agreement with experiment, suggesting revision of the older values. Anharmonicity constants agree well with experiment for stretches, but differ substantially for stretch-bend interaction constants, due to equality constraints in the experimental analysis that do not hold. Improved criteria for detecting Fermi and Coriolis resonances are proposed and found to work well, contrary to the established method based on harmonic frequency differences that fails to detect several important resonances for C2H4 and its isotopomers. Surprisingly good results are obtained with a small spd basis at the CCSD(T) level. The well-documented strong basis set effect on the v8 out-of-plane motion is present to a much lesser extent when correlation-optimized polarization functions are used. Complete sets of anharmonic, rovibrational coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants for the isotopomers are available as supplementary material to the paper.

HTESP (High-throughput electronic structure package): A package for high-throughput ab initio calculations

High-throughput ab initio calculations are the indispensable parts of data-driven discovery of new materials with desirable properties, as reflected in the establishment of several online material databases. The accumulation of extensive theoretical data through computations enables data-driven discovery by constructing machine learning and artificial intelligence models to predict novel compounds and forecast their properties. Efficient usage and extraction of data from these existing online material databases can accelerate the next stage materials discovery that targets different and more advanced properties, such as electron–phonon coupling for phonon-mediated superconductivity. However, extracting data from these databases, generating tailored input files for different ab initio calculations, performing such calculations, and analyzing new results can be demanding tasks. Here, in this work, we introduce a software package named “HTESP” (High-Throughput Electronic Structure Package) written in Python and Bash languages, which automates the entire workflow including data extraction, input file generation, calculation submission, result collection and plotting. Our HTESP will help speed up future computational materials discovery processes.

Virial expansion of the second layer in physical adsorption - An ab initio calculation for helium on argon crystal

A model of helium adsorption on an argon crystal is built up from the premise that local adsorption predominates in the first layer and nonlocal adsorption in the second. Application of the virial expansion theorem to the second layer gives a series in which the first term represents the motion of a single molecule in the external potential field and the second a two-body interaction under this field. The thermodynamic functions of the adsorbed phase are calculated ab initio, the gas-solid interaction potential being derived from lattice summation and the partition function from an appropriate choice of a site-spacing polynomial to describe the periodic potential. The mutual interaction of adsorbed molecules is calculated with a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones potential. The second virial coefficient is calculated and its dependence on temperature and choice of potential is studied. It is found that the second virial coefficient is very well approximated by a two-dimensional gas in free space. The adsorption isotherm, isosteric heat, and specific heat are obtained and compared with the results of Ross and Steele, giving excellent agreement.

A potential energy surface for the process H2 + H2O yielding H + H + H2O - Ab initio calculations and analytical representation

Extensive ab initio calculations on the ground state potential energy surface of H2 + H2O were performed using a large contracted Gaussian basis set and a high level of correlation treatment. An analytical representation of the potential energy surface was then obtained which reproduces the calculated energies with an overall root-mean-square error of only 0.64 mEh. The analytic representation explicitly includes all nine internal degrees of freedom and is also well behaved as the H2 dissociates; it thus can be used to study collision-induced dissociation or recombination of H2. The strategy used to minimize the number of energy calculations is discussed, as well as other advantages of the present method for determining the analytical representation.

Electronic Properties and Magnetocaloric Effect of GdNi{sub 4}Si: Ab Initio Calculations, Mean Field Approximation, and Monte Carlo Simulation

We investigated the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of GdNi{sub 4}Si by using a combination of first-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Monte Carlo Simulation. Ab initio calculations show the stability of the ferromagnetic phase in this material. The Monte Carlo simulations combined with ab initio exchange coupling constants as input parameters lead to discuss the transition temperature, critical exponents, and isothermal entropy changes. The measured critical temperature and the isothermal magnetic entropy changes for a field change of 14T in good agreement with the experimental data.

Ab initio calculations of scattering and fusion reactions

We review recent advancements achieved within the ab initio no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC), a unified first-principle (or, ab initio) approach to nuclear bound and continuum states. We highlight its application to reactions of astrophysical interests, including the 7 Be(p, γ) 8 B solar fusion and α-α scattering, and to the structure of the exotic 12 Be nucleus. Furthermore, our findings provide a solid foundation for integrating ab initio calculations with experimental measurements, allowing for more precise evaluations of key thermonuclear reaction rates at astrophysical energies, and offer new insights into the factors that contribute to the emergence of clustering.

Ab Initio Calculations of Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Chlorine Nitrate and Nitric Acid

Ab initio calculations of vertical excitations to singlet and triplet excited states of chlorine nitrate and nitric acid are reported. The nature of the electronic transitions are examined by decomposing the difference density into the sum of detachment and attachment densities. Counterparts for the three lowest singlet excited states of nitric acid survive relatively unperturbed in chlorine nitrate, while other low-lying singlet states of chlorine nitrate appear to be directly dissociative in the ClO chromophore. These results suggest an assignment of the two main peaks in the experimental chlorine nitrate absorption spectrum. In addition, triplet vertical excitations and the lowest optimized triplet geometries of both molecules are studied.

Converged ab initio calculations of heavy nuclei

We propose a novel storage scheme for three-nucleon (3N) interaction matrix elements relevant for the normal-ordered two-body approximation used extensively in ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei. This scheme reduces the required memory by approximately two orders of magnitude, which allows the generation of 3N interaction matrix elements with the standard truncation of E 3max =28, well beyond the previous limit of 18. We demonstrate that this is sufficient to obtain the ground-state energy of 132 Sn converged to within a few MeV with respect to the E 3max truncation. In addition, we study the asymptotic convergence behavior and perform extrapolations to the un-truncated limit. Finally, we investigate the impact of truncations made when evolving free-space 3N interactions with the similarity renormalization group. We find that the contribution of blocks with angular momentum J rel > 9/2 to the ground-state energy is dominated by a basis-truncation artifact, which vanishes in the large-space limit, so these computationally expensive components can be neglected. For the two sets of nuclear interactions employed in this work, the resulting binding energy of 132 Sn agrees with the experimental value within theoretical uncertainties. This work enables converged ab initio calculations of heavy nuclei.

Energy and mechanical properties predictions in Fe-Ni binary system by ab initio calculations

Here, the fcc random solid solutions in Fe-Ni binary system were investigated using ab initio calculations. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied along with supercells generated by the Special Quasi-Random Structure (SQS) method to predict the enthalpy of mixing and magnetic and elastic properties. The results were compared with relevant experimental and computational data produced by other groups. The effect of SQS supercell size and relaxation procedure on the predicted properties of the alloys were also studied. Our calculations show that 16-atoms SQS model provides adequate approach to the mixing energy of the alloy. However, calculation of mechanical properties requires larger supercell. Excellent agreement between experimental and calculated elastic properties was found in fcc region of Fe-Ni system.

Temperature-dependent phonon lifetimes and thermal conductivity of silicon by inelastic neutron scattering and ab initio calculations

In this paper, inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal of silicon was performed at temperatures from 100 to 1500 K. These experimental data were reduced to obtain phonon spectral intensity at all wave vectors $\overset{→}{Q}$ and frequencies ω in the first Brillouin zone. Thermal broadenings of the phonon peaks were obtained by fitting and by calculating with an iterative ab initio method that uses thermal atom displacements on an ensemble of superlattices. Agreement between the calculated and experimental broadenings was good, with possible discrepancies at the highest temperatures. Distributions of phonon widths versus phonon energy had similar shapes for computation and experiment. These distributions grew with temperature but maintained similar shapes. Parameters from the ab initio calculations were used to obtain the thermal conductivity from the Boltzmann transport equation, which was in good agreement with experimental data. Despite the high group velocities of longitudinal acoustic phonons, their shorter lifetimes reduced their contribution to the thermal conductivity, which was dominated by transverse acoustic modes.
