Replicated Computational Results (RCR) Report for “Adaptive Precision Block-Jacobi for High Performance Preconditioning in the Ginkgo Linear Algebra Software”

The article by Flegar et al. titled “Adaptive Precision Block-Jacobi for High Performance Preconditioning in the Ginkgo Linear Algebra Software” presents a novel, practical implementation of an adaptive precision block-Jacobi preconditioner. Performance results using state-of-the-art GPU architectures for the block-Jacobi preconditioner generation and application demonstrate the practical usability of the method, compared to a traditional full-precision block-Jacobi preconditioner. A production-ready implementation is provided in the Ginkgo numerical linear algebra library. In this report, the Ginkgo library is reinstalled and performance results are generated to perform a comparison to the original results when using Ginkgo’s Conjugate Gradient solver with either the full or the adaptive precision block-Jacobi preconditioner for a suite of test problems on an NVIDIA GPU accelerator. After completing this process, the published results are deemed reproducible.

Optimal actuator placement in adaptive precision trusses

Actuator placement in adaptive truss structures is to cater to two needs: displacement control of precision points and preloading the elements to overcome joint slackness. Due to technological and financial considerations, the number of actuators available is much less than the degrees of freedom of precision points to be controlled and the degree of redundancy of the structure. An approach for optimal actuator location is outlined. Test cases to demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme are applied to the Precision Segmented Reflector Truss.

An adaptive precision gradient method for optimal control.

This paper presents a gradient algorithm for unconstrained optimal control problems. The algorithm is stated in terms of numerical integration formulas, the precision of which is controlled adaptively by a test that ensures convergence. Empirical results show that this algorithm is considerably faster than its fixed precision counterpart.-

Experimental Dynamic Characterization of a Reconfigurable Adaptive Precision Truss

The dynamic behavior of a reconfigurable adaptive truss structure with non-linear joints is investigated. The objective is to experimentally examine the effects of the local non-linearities on the global dynamics of the structure. Amplitude changes in the frequency response functions are measured at micron levels of motion. The amplitude and frequency variations of a number of modes indicate a non-linear Coulomb friction response. Hysteretic bifurcation behavior is also measured at an amplitude approximately equal to the specified free-play in the joint. Under the 1 g pre-load, however, the non-linearity was dominantly characteristic of Coulomb friction with little evidence of free-play stiffening.

Adaptable precision triggering mechanism

A precision triggering mechanism for engaging a portion of a device and a method of using the same are provided. The mechanism comprises an electric linear motor, a force limiter, a force sensor, an engagement slide, and a controller. The electric linear motor includes a drive rod, a driver that applies a force to the drive rod to move the drive rod linearly, and a sensor for detecting a linear position of the drive rod. The force limiter is connected to the drive rod and is configured to absorb an amount of axial force asserted by the drive rod above a maximum amount. The force sensor is connected to the force limiter and is configured to detect an amount of force applied by the force limiter on the force sensor. The engagement slide includes an end extending from the force sensor for engaging the portion of the device. The controller is configured to receive a signal representative of the linear position of the drive rod from the sensor of the electric linear motor; receive from the force sensor a signal representative of the amount of force applied by the force limiter; and direct the driver of the electric linear motor to apply a force to the drive rod based on at least one of the linear position of the drive rod or the amount of force applied by the force limiter.

Adaptive structures for precision segmented optical systems

An adaptive structures approach for a large segmented optical system with a 20-meter primary reflector made of lightweight hexagonal composite panels is considered. This approach makes it possible to vary the static and dynamic characteristics of a structural system through actuators and sensors integrated within the structure. Topics discussed include quasi-static shape adjustment and active damping augmentation of the primary backup truss structure, deformable panels for long spatial wavelength quasi-static figure correction, and an on-orbit identification system for large segmented optical systems.

A mathematical basis for the design optimization of adaptive trusses in precision control

Optimal actuator placement schemes are presently studied for cases of adaptive truss precision control and prestressing control, with a view to the maximization of actuator efficiencies. In statically indeterminate truss structures, the optimal placement criteria and techniques differ, depending on whether the primary determinate structure is known. A suboptimal actuator-placement solution to the global optimization problem which combines displacement control and prestressing control is suggested, by combining the separate displacement control and prestressing control optimization results. Attention is given to the results obtained for the illustrative case of a two-bay, three-dimensional precision truss structure.

Mixed-precision numerics in scientific applications: survey and perspectives

The explosive demand for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads has led to a significant increase in silicon area dedicated to lower-precision computations on recent high-performance computing hardware designs. However, mixed-precision capabilities, which can achieve performance improvements of up to 8x compared to double-precision in extreme compute-intensive workloads, remain largely untapped in most scientific applications. A growing number of efforts have shown that mixed-precision algorithmic innovations can deliver superior performance without sacrificing accuracy. These developments should prompt computational scientists to seriously consider whether their scientific modeling and simulation applications could benefit from the acceleration offered by new hardware and mixed-precision algorithms. In this survey, we (1) review progress across diverse scientific domains—fluid dynamics, weather and climate, quantum chemistry, and computational genomics—that have begun adopting mixed-precision strategies; (2) examine state-of-the-art algorithmic techniques such as iterative refinement, splitting and emulation schemes, and adaptive precision solvers; (3) assess their implications for accuracy, performance, and resource utilization; and (4) survey the emerging software ecosystem that enables mixed-precision methods at scale. We conclude with perspectives and recommendations on cross-cutting opportunities, domain-specific challenges, and the role of co-design between application scientists, numerical analysts, and computer scientists. Collectively, this survey underscores that mixed-precision numerics can reshape computational science by aligning algorithms with the evolving landscape of hardware capabilities.

A mathematical basis for the design and design optimization of adaptive trusses in precision control

A mathematical basis for the optimal design of adaptive trusses to be used in supporting precision equipment is provided. The general theory of adaptive structures is introduced, and the global optimization problem of placing a limited number, q, of actuators, so as to maximally achieve precision control and provide prestress, is stated. Two serialized optimization problems, namely, optimal actuator placement for prestress and optimal actuator placement for precision control, are addressed. In the case of prestressing, the computation of a 'desired' prestress is discussed, the interaction between actuators and redundants in conveying the prestress is shown in its mathematical form, and a methodology for arriving at the optimal placement of actuators and additional redundants is discussed. With regard to precision control, an optimal placement scheme (for q actuators) for maximum 'authority' over the precision points is suggested. The results of the two serialized optimization problems are combined to give a suboptimal solution to the global optimization problem. A method for improving this suboptimal actuator placement scheme by iteration is presented.

Entry vehicle performance analysis and atmospheric guidance algorithm for precision landing on Mars

Future missions to Mars may require pin-point landing precision, possibly on the order of tens of meters. The ability to reach a target while meeting a dynamic pressure constraint to ensure safe parachute deployment is complicated at Mars by low atmospheric density, high atmospheric uncertainty, and the desire to employ only bank angle control. The vehicle aerodynamic performance requirements and guidance necessary for 0.5 to 1.5 lift drag ratio vehicle to maximize the achievable footprint while meeting the constraints are examined. A parametric study of the various factors related to entry vehicle performance in the Mars environment is undertaken to develop general vehicle aerodynamic design requirements. The combination of low lift drag ratio and low atmospheric density at Mars result in a large phugoid motion involving the dynamic pressure which complicates trajectory control. Vehicle ballistic coefficient is demonstrated to be the predominant characteristic affecting final dynamic pressure. Additionally, a speed brake is shown to be ineffective at reducing the final dynamic pressure. An adaptive precision entry atmospheric guidance scheme is presented. The guidance uses a numeric predictor-corrector algorithm to control downrange, an azimuth controller to govern crossrange, and analytic control law to reduce the final dynamic pressure. Guidance performance is tested against a variety of dispersions, and the results from selected tests are presented. Precision entry using bank angle control only is demonstrated to be feasible at Mars.

Identification of Nonlinear Micron-Level Mechanics for a Precision Deployable Joint

The experimental identification of micron-level nonlinear joint mechanics and dynamics for a pin-clevis joint used in a precision, adaptive, deployable space structure are investigated. The force-state mapping method is used to identify the behavior of the joint under a preload. The results of applying a single tension-compression cycle to the joint under a tensile preload are presented. The observed micron-level behavior is highly nonlinear and involves all six rigid body motion degrees-of-freedom of the joint. it is also suggests that at micron levels of motion modelling of the joint mechanics and dynamics must include the interactions between all internal components, such as the pin, bushings, and the joint node.

Triangle Geometry Processing for Surface Modeling and Cartesian Grid Generation

Cartesian mesh generation is accomplished for component based geometries, by intersecting components subject to mesh generation to extract wetted surfaces with a geometry engine using adaptive precision arithmetic in a system which automatically breaks ties with respect to geometric degeneracies. During volume mesh generation, intersected surface triangulations are received to enable mesh generation with cell division of an initially coarse grid. The hexagonal cells are resolved, preserving the ability to directionally divide cells which are locally well aligned.

Experimental studies of adaptive structures for precision performance

An experimental study was made of the adaptive structure concept. Experimental data were obtained for a three-longeron, thirteen-bay truss-type test structure. This test structure can be softly suspended as well as rigidly clamped at the central bay. The load-carrying active member consists of a stack of concentric piezoelectric wafers, an eddy current displacement sensor, and a strain gage force sensor. A bridge (or compound) feedback technique developed in communication engineering is applied to the problem of active damping augmentation in adaptive structures. Using collocated force and velocity feedback around the active member, a desired output mechanical impedance can be implemented to maximize energy absorption by the active members. In addition, large gains can be implemented to linearize the active member's nonlinear behavior. Good agreements with linear finite element analysis was found for both static and dynamic structural responses. An 11 percent damping in the first bending mode was demonstrated in the closed-loop damping experiment.

Adaptive structures for precision controlled large space systems

The stringent accuracy and ground test validation requirements of some of the future space missions will require new approaches in structural design. Adaptive structures, structural systems that can vary their geometric congiguration as well as their physical properties, are primary candidates for meeting the functional requirements for such missions. Research performed in the development of such adaptive structural systems is described.
