Lattice dynamics of alpha-uranium measured on ARCS.

The combined inelastic neutron scattering data from ARCS for alpha-Uranium single crystal measured at 300K, 200K, 70K and 20K. The incident neutron energy was 30 meV. To obtain a significant four-dimensional Q-E volume, the crystal was measured in two scattering geometries, with the [001] and [011] directions oriented along the vertical rotations axis. For each geometry, the crystal was rotated in 1 degree steps with respect to the incident beam. All the individual angles data files at each temperature were merged and analyzed using SHIVER software package (https://neutrons.github.io/Shiver/). The files labeled a_U_HKL_20K_new.nxs, a_U_HKL_70K.nxs, a_U_HKL_200K.nxs and a_U_HKL_300K.nxs are for [011] oriented scattering at 20K, 70K, 200K, and 300K respectively. The files labeled a_U_HK0_70K.nxs, a_U_HK0_200K.nxs and a_U_HK0_300K.nxs are for [001] oriented scattering at temperatures 70K, 200K and 300K respectively.

Bulk and surface diffusion of neodymium in alpha-uranium: Ab initio calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

A fundamental understanding of lanthanide transport in metallic fuels is critical for high fidelity modeling of the fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) phenomenon, which can lead to the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds and premature failure of the cladding. Here we report a combined ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) study of the bulk diffusivity of Nd in α-U, fully taking into account the effect of radiation enhanced diffusion. In this work, the vacancy mechanism is considered to be the dominant mechanism for the bulk diffusion of Nd since a Nd interstitial is found to be intrinsically unstable in α-U. The surface diffusivity of a Nd adatom on α-U (001) surface has been further predicted using KMC simulations parameterized by DFT calculations. The present study suggests that Nd transport via the surface diffusion mechanism can be many orders of magnitude faster than bulk diffusion. Furthermore, the results from the present lower length scale study can be used to inform mesoscale phase-field simulations to determine the effective diffusion coefficient of Nd through α-U with a porous microstructure.

Understanding the effect of crystal anisotropy on grain growth, texturing and transport via the orthorhombic ?-U system [Slides]

The alpha phase of uranium exhibits the orthorhombic crystal structure, resulting in significant physical property anisotropy. These complex properties make the material challenging to work with in engineering settings but provide a rich arena to investigate the fundamental, multi-scale effects of anisotropy on physical behaviors such as grain growth and microstructure evolution under irradiation. We apply molecular dynamics and phase field modeling to study mass transport and grain growth in alpha-uranium. We characterize the mobilities of crystalline defects and the interfacial energy, and We find that the grain boundary energy is highly variable depending on the interface structure and that the relative rates of defect transport change with temperature. We also find that anisotropic thermal expansion has a significant impact on grain growth kinetics and texture development. Our results are used to explain experimental observations and to provide a basis for further hypotheses into the complex physical behavior of alpha-uranium.

Modeling brittle fracture due to anisotropic thermal expansion in polycrystalline materials

Here, this work investigated brittle fracture of polycrystalline materials due to thermal stresses arising from anisotropic thermal expansion. We used phase-field fracture simulations with the properties of alpha-uranium (α-U) and assumed a linear elastic mechanical response. Three-dimensional simulations were used to predict fracture for various conditions and crystallographic textures. We found that fracture was more pronounced during cooling than during heating because the anisotropy increased with temperature. We also found that the total crack surface area increased with increasing average misorientation, while the net shape change of the material decreased with increasing misorientation. Two-dimensional simulations in which one crystallographic coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was set to zero indicated that the expansion behavior in the crystallographic direction with the smallest CTE was the primary cause of fracture.

Thermal conductivity of α -U with point defects

Here, we develop a theoretical model for thermal conductivity of α-U that combines density functional theory calculations and the coupled electron–phonon Boltzmann transport equation. The model incorporates both electron and phonon contributions to thermal conductivity and achieves good agreement with experimental data over a wide temperature range. The dominant scattering mechanism governing thermal transport in α-U at different temperatures is examined. By including phonon–defect and electron–defect scatterings in the model, we study the effect of point defects including U-vacancy, U-interstitial, and Zr-substitution on the thermal conductivity of α-U. The degradation of anisotropic thermal conductivity due to point defects as a function of defect concentration, defect type, and temperature is reported. This model provides insights into the impact of defects on both phonon and electron thermal transport. It will promote the fundamental understanding of thermal transport in α-U and provide a ground for investigation of coupled electron–phonon transport in metallic materials.
