Helical antiferromagnetic ordering in EuNi 1.95 As 2 single crystals

The Eu + 2 spins-7/2 in EuNi 2 As 2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure order antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature T N = 15 K into a helical antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the helix axis aligned along the tetragonal c axis and the Eu ordered moments aligned ferromagnetically within the ab plane as previously reported from neutron diffraction measurements [T. Jin et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 014425 (2019)]. Here we study the crystallographic, magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of Bi-flux-grown single crystals using single-crystal x-ray diffraction, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χ, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity Cp, and electrical resistivity ρ measurements versus applied magnetic field H and temperature T. Vacancies are found on the Ni sites corresponding to the composition EuNi 1.95 (1) As 2. A good fit of the ρ (T) data by the Bloch-Grüneisen theory for metals was obtained. The χab (T) data below T N are fitted well by molecular field theory (MFT), and the helix turn angle kd and the Eu-Eu Heisenberg exchange constants are extracted from the fit parameters. The kd value is in good agreement with the neutron-diffraction result. The magnetic contribution to the zero-field heat capacity below T N is also fitted by MFT. The isothermal in-plane magnetization M ab exhibits two metamagnetic transitions versus H, whereas M c (T = 2 K ) is nearly linear up to H = 14 T, both behaviors being consistent with MFT. The M c (H, T) , ρ(H c , T) , and Cp (H c , T) data yielded a H c - T phase diagram separating the AFM and paramagnetic phases in good agreement with MFT. Anisotropic χ(T) literature data for the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type helical antiferromagnet EuRh 2 As 2 were also fitted well by MFT. A comparison is made between the crystallographic and magnetic properties of ThCr 2 Si 2 -type Eu M 2 Pn 2 compounds with M = Fe , Co, Ni, Cu, or Rh, and Pn = P or As, where only ferromagnetic and c -axis helical AFM structures are found.

Long-Range Antiferromagnetic Order in a Rocksalt High Entropy Oxide

We report for the first time the magnetic structure of the high entropy oxide (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )O using neutron powder diffraction. This material exhibits a sluggish magnetic transition but possesses a long-range ordered antiferromagnetic ground state, as revealed by direct current and alternating current magnetic susceptibility, neutron diffraction, and spectroscopy. The magnetic propagation wavevector is k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) based on the cubic structure $Fm\bar{3m}$, and the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic sheets in the (111) planes with spins antiparallel between two neighboring planes. Neutron spectroscopy reveals strong magnetic excitations at 100 K that survive up to room temperature. Furthermore this work demonstrates that entropy-stabilized oxides represent a unique platform to study long-range magnetic order with an extreme chemical disorder.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Observation of a C -type short-range antiferromagnetic order in layer spacing expanded FeS

Here, we report neutron diffraction studies of FeS single crystals obtained from Rb x Fe 2-y S 2 single crystals via a hydrothermal method. While no $\sqrt{5}$×$\sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order or block antiferromagnetic order typical of Rb x Fe 2-y S 2 is found in our samples, we observe C-type short-range antiferromagnetic order with moments pointed along the c axis hosted by a different phase of FeS with an expanded interlayer spacing. The Néel temperature for this magnetic order is determined to be 170 ± 4 K. Our finding of a variant FeS structure hosting this C-type antiferromagnetic order demonstrates that the known FeS phase synthesized in this method is in the vicinity of a magnetically ordered ground state, providing insights into understanding a variety of phenomena observed in FeS and the related FeSe 1-x S x iron chalcogenide system.

Preferential quenching of 5 d antiferromagnetic order in Sr 3 (Ir 1– x Mn x ) 2 O 7

The breakdown of J eff = 1/2 antiferromagnetism in the limit of strong disorder is studied in Sr 3 (Ir 1– x Mn x ) 2 O 7 . Upon Mn-substitution, antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ir cations becomes increasingly two-dimensional, resulting in the complete suppression of longrange Ir magnetic order above x ≈ 0.25. Long-range antiferromagnetism however persists on the Mn sites to higher Mn concentrations ( x > 0.25) and is necessarily mediated via a random network of majority Ir sites. Our data suggest a shift in the Mn valence from Mn 4+ to Mn 3+ at intermediate doping levels, which in turn generates nonmagnetic Ir 5+ sites and suppresses long-range order within the Ir network. Here, the collapse of long-range J eff = 1/2 antiferromagnetism and the survival of percolating antiferromagnetic order on Mn-sites demonstrates a complex 3 d –5 d exchange process that surprisingly enables minority Mn spins to order far below the conventional percolation threshold for a bilayer square lattice.

Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fe-substituted Bi-2201 Cuprate in the Heavily Overdoped Regime

Elastic neutron scattering experiments showed incommensurate antiferromagnetic peaks in 5% Fe-substituted Bi-2201 cuprate in the non-superconducting heavily overdoped regime. Here, the incommensurability δ ∼ 0.21 is comparable to that observed in Fe-substituted Bi-2201 in the overdoped regime. [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010).] The magnetic correlation length is comparable between the overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes. It is plausible that incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is induced and stabilized by Fe in the heavily overdoped regime, which suggests a robust antiferromagnetic correlation beyond the superconducting dome in the phase diagram.

Suppression of the antiferromagnetic order when approaching the superconducting state in a phase-separated crystal of K x Fe 2 - y Se 2

Here, we combined elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity measurements to study single-crystal samples of K x Fe 2-y Se 2 , which contain the superconducting phase that has a transition temperature of ~31 K. In the inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we also observe both the spin-wave excitations resulting from the block antiferromagnetic ordered phase and the resonance that is associated with the superconductivity in the superconducting phase, demonstrating the coexistence of these two orders. From the temperature dependence of the intensity of the magnetic Bragg peaks, we find that well before entering the superconducting state, the development of the magnetic order is interrupted, at ~42 K. We consider this result to be evidence for the physical separation of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases; the suppression is possibly due to the proximity effect of the superconducting fluctuations on the antiferromagnetic order.

Directional effects of antiferromagnetic ordering on the electronic structure in NdSb

The recent discovery of unconventional surface-state pairs, which give rise to Fermi arcs and spin textures, in antiferromagnetically ordered NdBi raised the interest in rare-earth monopnictides. Several scenarios of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order have been suggested to explain the origin of these states with some of them being consistent with the presence of nontrivial topologies. Here, in this paper, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the electronic structure of NdSb. We found the presence of distinct domains that have different electronic structures at the surface. These domains correspond to different orientations of magnetic moments in the AFM state with respect to the surface. We demonstrated remarkable agreement between DFT calculations and ARPES that capture all essential changes in the band structure caused by the transition to a magnetically ordered state.

Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Quasi-One-Dimensional FeBi 4 S 7

Here, we report a detailed study of the synthesis, composition, magnetic structure, and transport properties of a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet FeBi 4 S 7 that contains chains of edge-sharing FeS 6 octahedra. High-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, aided by variation of synthetic conditions, suggests that the true formula of the material is Fe 1.2 Bi 3.8 S 7 , due to the minor substitution of Fe into Bi sites. This finding is in agreement with crystal structure refinement from neutron powder diffraction data as well as with the small band gap of 0.23 eV determined from electrical transport measurements. Analysis of the neutron diffraction pattern collected below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of 64 K revealed ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe moments in the chains of FeS 6 octahedra. The overall ordering, however, is antiferromagnetic due to the antiparallel arrangement of moments on neighboring chains. The collinear spin arrangement is described by a k-vector (1, 0, 1/2), which indicates doubling of the unit cell in the c direction and the loss of the C-centering translation as compared to the nuclear cell. The ferromagnetic nature of the sulfide-bridged chains of Fe 2+ ions in FeBi 4 S 7 , in contrast to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Fe moments in compounds with similar structural fragments, can be justified by the analysis of metric parameters that characterize the Fe–S bonding in these materials.

Néel-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic field–temperature phase diagram in the spin-1/2 rare-earth honeycomb compound YbCl 3

Most of the searches for Kitaev materials deal with 4 d / 5 d magnets with spin-orbit-coupled J = 1 / 2 local moments such as iridates and α - RuCl 3 . Here we propose the monoclinic YbCl 3 with a Yb 3 + honeycomb lattice for the exploration of Kitaev physics. We perform thermodynamic, a c susceptibility, angle-dependent magnetic torque, and neutron diffraction measurements on YbCl 3 single crystal. We find that the Yb 3 + ion exhibits a Kramers doublet ground state that gives rise to an effective spin J eff = 1 / 2 local moment. Additionally, the compound exhibits short-range magnetic order below 1.20 K, followed by a long-range Néel-type antiferromagnetic order at 0.60 K, below which the ordered Yb 3 + spins lie in the a c plane with an angle of 16(11) ° away from the a axis. These orders can be suppressed by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields at around 6 and 10 T, respectively. Moreover, the Néel temperature varies nonmonotonically under the out-of-plane magnetic fields, suggesting a reduced spin dimensionality. Finally, together with the strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the reduced order moment 0.8(1) μ B at 0.25 K, all indicate that YbCl 3 could be a two-dimensional spin system to proximate the Kitaev physics.

Turn‐On of Current‐Induced Spin Torque Upon Non‐collinear Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Delafossite PdCrO 2

We report measurements of the current-induced spin torque produced by the delafossite antiferromagnet PdCrO 2 and acting on an adjacent ferromagnetic permalloy layer. The spin torque increases strongly as the temperature is reduced through the Néel temperature, when the PdCrO 2 transitions from a paramagnetic phase to a noncollinear antiferromagnetic state. This result is qualitatively consistent with density functional theory calculations regarding how spin-current generation changes upon antiferromagnetic ordering in PdCrO 2 .

Bicollinear antiferromagnetic order, monoclinic distortion, and reversed resistivity anisotropy in FeTe as a result of spin-lattice coupling

The bicollinear antiferromagnetic order experimentally observed in FeTe is shown to be stabilized by the coupling g ~ 12 between monoclinic lattice distortions and the spin-nematic order parameter with B 2g symmetry, within a three-orbital spin-fermion model studied with Monte Carlo techniques. A finite but small value of g ~ 12 is required, with a concomitant lattice distortion compatible with experiments, and a tetragonal-monoclinic transition strongly first order. Remarkably, the bicollinear state found here displays a planar resistivity with the reversed puzzling anisotropy discovered in transport experiments. Orthorhombic distortions are also incorporated, and phase diagrams interpolating between pnictides and chalcogenides are presented. Here, we conclude that the spin-lattice coupling we introduce is sufficient to explain the challenging properties of FeTe.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 single crystals

MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 are two members with n = 2 and 3 in the family of MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 where the n = 1 member, MnBi 2 Te 4 , has been intensively investigated as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. In this work, we report the A-type antiferromagnetic order in these two compounds by measuring magnetic properties, electrical and thermal transport, specific heat, and single-crystal neutron diffraction. Both compounds order into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure as does MnBi 2 Te 4 with ferromagnetic planes coupled antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic c axis. While no evidence for any in-plane ordered moment is found for MnBi 2 Te 4 or MnBi 6 Te 10 , weak reflections at half- L positions along the [0 0 L ] direction are observed for MnBi 4 Te 7 suggesting an in-plane ordered moment around 0.15 μ B / Mn . The ordering temperature, T N , is 13 K for MnBi 4 Te 7 and 11 K for MnBi 6 Te 10 . The magnetic order is also manifested in the anisotropic magnetic properties. Furthermore, for both compounds, the interlayer coupling is weak and a spin-flip transition occurs when a magnetic field of around 1.6 kOe is applied along the c axis at 2 K. As observed in MnBi 2 Te 4 , when cooling across T N , no anomaly was observed in the temperature dependence of thermopower. On the other hand, critical scattering effects are observed in thermal conductivity although the effect is less pronounced than that in MnBi 2 Te 4 .

Thermodynamic evidence for polaron stabilization inside the antiferromagnetic order of Eu5In2Sb6

Abstract Materials exhibiting electronic inhomogeneities at the nanometer scale have enormous potential for applications. Magnetic polarons are one such type of inhomogeneity which link the electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom in correlated matter and often give rise to colossal magnetoresistance. Here, we investigate single crystals of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 by thermal expansion and magnetostriction along different crystallographic directions. These data provide compelling evidence for the formation of magnetic polarons in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 well above the magnetic ordering temperature. More specifically, our results are consistent with anisotropic polarons with varying extent along the different crystallographic directions. A crossover revealed within the magnetically ordered phase can be associated with a surprising stabilization of ferromagnetic polarons within the global antiferromagnetic order upon decreasing temperature. These findings make Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 a rare example of such coexisting and competing magnetic orders and, importantly, shed new light on colossal magnetoresistive behavior beyond manganites.

Geometric control of emergent antiferromagnetic order in coupled artificial spin ices

Artificial spin ices (ASIs) composed of coupled nanomagnets offer the possibility to create designer geometrical frustration and manipulate inter-nanomagnet interactions. In particular, by using a dimer motif consisting of two strongly coupled single-domain nano magnets as a building block, we can control and realize intriguing antiferromagnetic physical states in which the magnetic charge is not conserved. Here we create a dimer kagome ASI system within which the antiferromagnetic order is controlled by tuning lattice geometry. Different disordered antiferromagnetic phases and the inter-nanomagnet interactions are visualized directly in demagnetized lattices with different lattice parameters. Monte Carlo simulations establish that the collective ground state consists of disordered antiferromagnetic dimers across the lattice when the intra-dimer interaction is dominant. However, for lattices governed by intra-triad-unit interactions, the ground state exhibits a longrange spin-ordered state in which the vertex magnetic charge is uniform across all triads.
