GMI Spin Mechanism Assembly Design, Development, and Test Results

The GMI Spin Mechanism Assembly (SMA) is a precision bearing and power transfer drive assembly mechanism that supports and spins the Global Microwave Imager (GMI) instrument at a constant rate of 32 rpm continuously for the 3 year plus mission life. The GMI instrument will fly on the core Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) spacecraft and will be used to make calibrated radiometric measurements at multiple microwave frequencies and polarizations. The GPM mission is an international effort managed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to improve climate, weather, and hydro-meteorological predictions through more accurate and frequent precipitation measurements [1]. Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corporation (BATC) was selected by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to design, build, and test the GMI instrument. The SMA design has to meet a challenging set of requirements and is based on BATC space mechanisms heritage and lessons learned design changes made to the WindSat BAPTA mechanism that is currently operating on orbit and has recently surpassed 8 years of Flight operation.

Umbilical mechanism assembly for the international space station

Mechanisms for engaging and disengaging electrical and fluid line connectors are required to be operated repeatedly in hazardous or remote locations on space station, nuclear reactors, toxic chemical and undersea environments. Such mechanisms may require shields to protect the mating faces of the connectors when connectors are not engaged and move these shields out of the way during connector engagement. It is desirable to provide a force-transmitting structure to react the force required to engage or disengage the connectors. It is also desirable that the mechanism for moving the connectors and shields is reliable, simple, and the structure as lightweight as possible. With these basic requirements, an Umbilical Mechanism Assembly (UMA) was originally designed for the Space Station Freedom and now being utilized for the International Space Station.

Autonomous Mechanical Assembly on the Space Shuttle: An Overview

The space shuttle will be equipped with a pair of 50 ft. manipulators used to handle payloads and to perform mechanical assembly operations. Although current plans call for these manipulators to be operated by a human teleoperator. The possibility of using results from robotics and machine intelligence to automate this shuttle assembly system was investigated. The major components of an autonomous mechanical assembly system are examined, along with the technology base upon which they depend. The state of the art in advanced automation is also assessed.

Precedence relationship representations of mechanical assembly sequences

Two types of precedence relationship representations for mechanical assembly sequences are presented: precedence relationships between the establishment of one connection between two parts and the establishment of another connection, and precedence relationships between the establishment of one connection and states of the assembly process. Precedence relationship representations have the advantage of being very compact. The problem with these representations was how to guarantee their correctness and completeness. Two theorems are presented each of which leads to the generation of one type of precedence relationship representation guaranteeing its correctness and completeness for a class of assemblies.

Coarse pointing mechanism assembly for satellite interlink experiment

Since 1975, MECANEX S.A. has been manufacturing components for solar array drives and mechanisms used in space applications. In 1991, work was started in an early phase C (Engineering Model) on a Coarse Pointing Mechanism Assembly (CPMA) for the Semiconductor-laser Inter-satellite Link EXperiment (SILEX). This paper deals with the history, the evolution, and the lessons learned from taking over a pre-design in 1991 to the delivery of last flight models (FM 5 & 6) in 1995.

Representations of mechanical assembly sequences

Five types of representations for assembly sequences are reviewed: the directed graph of feasible assembly sequences, the AND/OR graph of feasible assembly sequences, the set of establishment conditions, and two types of sets of precedence relationships. (precedence relationships between the establishment of one connection between parts and the establishment of another connection, and precedence relationships between the establishment of one connection and states of the assembly process). The mappings of one representation into the others are established. The correctness and completeness of these representations are established. The results presented are needed in the proof of correctness and completeness of algorithms for the generation of mechanical assembly sequences.

Exploration of unknown mechanical assemblies through manipulation

If robots must function in unstructured environments, they must also possess the ability to acquire information and construct appropriate models of the unknown environment. This paper addresses the automatic generation of kinematic models of unknown objects with movable parts in the environment. If the relative motion between moving parts must be observed and characterized, vision alone cannot suffice. An approach in which manipulation is used with vision for sensing is better suited to the task of determining kinematic properties. In this paper, algorithms for constructing models of unknown mechanical assemblies and characterizing the relative motion are developed. Results of a simulation are described to demonstrate the role of manipulation in such an endeavor.

Diagnostic device for monitoring the technical condition of mechanical assemblies

An automatic diagnostic device for monitoring the condition of tractor transmission gears is described. The structural noise spectrum of the gearshift box and rear axle of the tractor were analyzed in a digital computer, by an algorithm based on the multiple correlation method. The optimum assembly of operating frequencies, by use of which the errors in measurement were minimized, was selected from the entire frequency spectrum. Selected frequencies are necessary for choosing the measurement range of the diagnostic device. It turned out that, to obtain a relative error of no more than 2%, it was sufficient to use two filters, vibrating only at the frequencies carrying the maximum data of the mechanical parameter being investigated. The measurement system consists of frequency-selection filters, amplifiers and quadratic detectors, at the outlets of which constant voltages are created, which are proportional to the signal level at the frequencies selected.

Generation of precedence relations for mechanical assemblies

Planning of assembly sequences is essential to the manufacturing system design process. Several methodologies have been proposed to represent all the feasible assembly sequences. In this thesis, three algorithms are presented to generate three sets of precedence relations based on all the infeasible assembly tasks, all the infeasible assembly states, and all the feasible assembly sequences, respectively. The equivalence of the resulting sets of precedence relations to the AND/OR graph is established. A new property, the real time property, of a representation of assembly sequences is defined and discussed. A representation of assembly sequences is said to have the real time property, if it is possible to generate the next assembly task by testing locally in the representation, and it will guarantee that the generated assembly task will not lead the assembly sequence to a dead end situation, in which no feasible assembly task can be performed any more. It is shown that the correctness and completeness of one representation can not guarantee the real time property of the representation. It is proven that the directed graph representation and the set of precedence relations based on all the infeasible assembly states have the real time property, while the AND/OR graph representation and the set of precedence relations based on all the infeasible assembly tasks do not have the real time property. Finally in the thesis, the PLEIDEAS system, a PLanning Environment for Integrated DEsign of Assembly Systems, is described and illustrated by an example.

The Cassini Main Engine Assembly Cover Mechanism

This paper describes a micrometeroid protection system for the main engines of the Cassini spacecraft. The engine Cover Assembly is a deployable/restowable half sphere of multilayer insulation mounted to an articulatable frame over 2 meters (7 feet) in diameter. The Cover folds into a compact wedge only 25 cm (10 inches) at its maximum thickness. The micrometeroid environment and typical protection methods are described as well as the design details and development problems of the Cover Mechanism Assembly.

Estimation of bearing contact angle in-situ by X-ray kinematography

The mounted, preloaded contact angle of the structural bearings in the assembled design mechanical assembly was measured. A modification of the Turns method is presented, based upon the clarity and definition of moving parts achieved with X-ray technique and cinematic display. Contact angle is estimated by counting the number of bearings passing a given point as a function of number of turns of the shaft. Ball and pitch diameter variations are discussed. Ball train and shaft angle uncertainties are also discussed.

Preliminary Investigations of an Optical Assembly Tracking Mechanism for LISA

After injection into their specific orbits, the position of the LISA spacecraft are not actively controlled. Rather the spacecraft are allowed to passively follow their trajectories and the roughly equilateral triangular constellation is preserved. Slight variations in the orbits cause the constellation to experience both periodic and secular variations, one consequence of which is a variation in the interior angles of the constellation on the order of one degree. This variation is larger than the field of view of the LISA telescope, requiring a mechanism for each spacecraft to maintain pointing to its two companions. This Optical Assembly Tracking Mechanism (OATM) will be used to accommodate these variations while maintaining pointing at the ten nanoradian level to the far spacecraft. Here we report on a possible design for the OATM as well as initial results from a test campaign of a piezo-inchworm actuator used to drive the mechanism.

Torque-while-turnaround scan mirror assembly

Mechanical aspects in the development of an oscillating scan mirror mechanism were reviewed, that featured a remarkably low level of structural vibration for the impact energies involved in mirror oscillation. Another feature was that energy lost during impact was returned to the mirror by applying torque only during the instant of impact. Because the duration of impact was only about 0.010 second, it was critical that energy losses be minimal because there was not much time to restore them.

Space-constructible heat pipe radiator thermal vacuum test program

The thermal vacuum test program being carried out at the Johnson Space Center on two prototype radiator elements intended for use in future large space platforms is discussed. The test program is described, as are the test articles, including the radiator element, evaporator assemblies, mechanical interface unit, contact heat exchanger assembly, tilt table mechanism, and supports. Test results on the heat pipe performance, radiator element performance, freeze/thaw characteristics, and contact heat exchanger assembly mechanism are discussed. It is concluded that the fundamental design goals for the radiator subsystem have been met.
