Hybrid Mesoporous Carbon/Copper Ferrite Electrode for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) with two dissimilar electrodes are known to exhibit relatively moderate energy and power densities. If electrodes derived from earth-abundant materials or renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) are used for fabrication, energy storage systems are expected to become less expensive and more sustainable. Hybrid electrode materials have advantages such as higher surface area, better chemical stability, and superior energy density. This study reports on the synthesis of a novel hybrid electrode material containing porous carbon (POC) and copper ferrite, which is designated as POC@Cu-ferrite, and its electrochemical performance in ASC configuration. Corn stover derived hydrochar is utilized for the sol–gel synthesis of POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid material using earth-abundant Cu and Fe-based precursors. This material is characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analyzer, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). As-synthesized Cu-ferrite is found to contain 89.2% CuFe 2 O 4 and 10.8% Fe 2 O 3 , whereas other phases such as Fe 3 O 4 , CuFeO 2 , and CuO are observed for the POC@Cu-ferrite. BET-specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume of POC@Cu-ferrite are observed as 1068 m 2 /g and 0.72 cm 3 /g, respectively. POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid electrode is used with POC opposite electrode to fabricate ASC, which is tested using Gamry G-300 potentiostat/galvanostat/ZRA to obtain cyclic voltammetry (CV) profiles and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) plots. ASC is also prepared using Cu-ferrite and POC materials and its specific capacitance and stability are compared with ASCs prepared with POC@Cu-ferrite and POC or graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) electrodes. POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid electrode is found to be superior with a 2-fold higher capacitance and significant electrochemical stability over 100 GCD cycles as compared to the Cu-ferrite electrode.

Vanadium and Niobium MXenes—Bilayered V 2 O 5 Asymmetric Supercapacitors

MXenes offer high metallic conductivity and redox capacitance that are attractive for high-power, high-energy storage devices. However, they operate limitedly under high anodic potentials due to irreversible oxidation. Pairing them with oxides to design asymmetric supercapacitors may expand the voltage window and increase the energy storage capabilities. Hydrated lithium preintercalated bilayered V 2 O 5 ( δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O) is attractive for aqueous energy storage due to its high Li capacity at high potentials; however, its poor cyclability remains a challenge. To overcome its limitations and achieve a wide voltage window and excellent cyclability, it is combined with V 2 C and Nb 4 C 3 MXenes. Asymmetric supercapacitors employing lithium intercalated V 2 C (Li-V 2 C) or tetramethylammonium intercalated Nb 4 C 3 (TMA-Nb 4 C 3 ) MXenes as the negative electrode, and a δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O composite with carbon nanotubes as the positive electrode in 5 m LiCl electrolyte operate over wide voltage windows of 2 and 1.6 V, respectively. The latter shows remarkably high cyclability—capacitance retention of ≈95% after 10 000 cycles. Here, this work highlights the importance of selecting appropriate MXenes to achieve a wide voltage window and a long cycle life in combination with oxide anodes to demonstrate the potential of MXenes beyond Ti 3 C 2 in energy storage.

Complex polycation redox material interfaced with renewable porous carbon for asymmetric supercapacitors

Mixed polycation transition metal ferrites are known to exhibit unique and superior characteristics for structural, electrical, magnetic, and optical applications. Although a few binary transition metal ferrites are found to be suitable for electrochemical energy storage application, ternary transition metal ferrites are not investigated for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Mixed polycation oxides are expected to have increased active sites that can facilitate proton and electron transfer impacting the redox reactions. Specific crystal structure and associated lattice parameters as well as surface and morphological characteristics can also influence the energy storage properties. This study for the first time reports a novel complex polycation redox material, (Cu p Mn q Zn r ) x Fe y O z and renewable pinewood (PW) derived porous carbon (POC) as electrodes for ASC. Both (Cu p Mn q Zn r ) x Fe y O z and PW-POC are subjected to electrochemical characterization and used in ASC configuration with aqueous KOH electrolyte. It is anticipated that the Faradaic characteristics of (Cu p Mn q Zn r ) x Fe y O z will make it to serve as a cathode while PW-POC with capacitive behavior will act as anode in ASCs. Relatively higher specific capacitance of > 200 F/g is observed for the (Cu p Mn q Zn r ) x Fe y O z reference electrode and fabricated ASCs. Capacitance retention rate is tested in 10,000 cycles for the working electrodes whereas for ASC, the stability tests are performed over 100 charging-discharging cycles exhibiting relatively higher capacitance retention. (Cu p Mn q Zn r ) x Fe y O z appears to be a promising material for a supercapacitor.

Covalent Graphene-MOF Hybrids for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

In this work, the covalent attachment of an amine functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH 2 = Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (bdc-NH 2 ) 6 ; bdc-NH 2 = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) (UiO-Universitetet i Oslo) to the basal-plane of carboxylate functionalized graphene (graphene acid = GA) via amide bonds is reported. The resultant GA@UiO-66-NH 2 hybrid displayed a large specific surface area, hierarchical pores and an interconnected conductive network. The electrochemical characterizations demonstrated that the hybrid GA@UiO-66-NH 2 acts as an effective charge storing material with a capacitance of up to 651 F g –1 , significantly higher than traditional graphene-based materials. The results suggest that the amide linkage plays a key role in the formation of a π-conjugated structure, which facilitates charge transfer and consequently offers good capacitance and cycling stability. Furthermore, to realize the practical feasibility, an asymmetric supercapacitor using a GA@UiO-66-NH 2 positive electrode with Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene as the opposing electrode has been constructed. The cell is able to deliver a power density of up to 16 kW kg –1 and an energy density of up to 73 Wh kg –1 , which are comparable to several commercial devices such as Pb-acid and Ni/MH batteries. Under an intermediate level of loading, the device retained 88% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 cycles.

Synthesis of nickel selenide thin films for high performance all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors

As a significant semiconductor, nickel selenide shows enormous potential and extensive application prospects in the field of sensor, photocatalysis and supercapacitor. In this paper, nickel selenide (Ni 3 Se 2 , NiSe) thin films were successfully fabricated on stainless-steel sheet using a facile, effective electrodeposition technique. The morphologies, microstructures and chemical compositions of the thin films are characterized systematically. Electrochemical tests exhibit that the Ni3Se2 and NiSe possess high specific capacitance of 581.1 F/g and 1644.7 F/g, respectively. A flexible, all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor is assembled by utilizing NiSe film as positive electrode and activated carbon as negative electrode. The solid device delivers a high areal capacitance of 27.0 mF/cm 2 at the current density of 0.7 mA/cm 2 . Furthermore, the maximum volumetric energy density and power density of the NiSe//AC asymmetric SCs can achieve 0.26 mWh/cm 3 and 33.35 mW/cm 3 , respectively. The device shows robust cycling stability with 84.6% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles, outstanding flexibility and satisfactory mechanical stability. Moreover, two devices in series can light up a red light-emitting diode, which displayed great potential applications for energy storage.

Corn stover‐derived porous carbon for asymmetric supercapacitors

In this investigation, hydrothermal liquefaction‐derived hydrochar from pulverized corn stover (avg. particle size 1.12 mm and ash content 6.75 wt%) is chemically activated with aqueous KOH in the presence of Pluronic F127 surfactant and thermally treated further up to 800°C to generate porous carbon (POC) with higher specific surface area and porosity. POC obtained under different processing conditions is thoroughly characterized by Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller surface area analyzer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Metallic impurity present in POC is characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Higher specific surface area POC is observed with the use of the surfactant during the activation process. Fully characterized POC is used with (Mn, Ti)‐mixed oxide electrode to fabricate asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). Specific capacitance of ASC is measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique using Gamry G‐300 potentiostat/galvanostat/ZRA. CV plots are obtained with different voltage scan rates whereas galvanostatic charge‐discharge plots are studied by varying the current density. Renewable corn stover‐derived POC prepared using Pluronic F127/KOH activation method is found to be highly suitable as an electrode material because of higher capacitance and electrochemical stability over 100 charging‐discharging cycles.

A Flexible, Redox-Active, Aqueous Electrolyte-Based Asymmetric Supercapacitor with High Energy Density Based on Keratin-Derived Renewable Carbon

This work exploits the advantage of asymmetric configuration over symmetric supercapacitor in designing high energy density flexible devices from two active electrode materials–keratin-based renewable-resource hierarchically porous carbon and hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ). Here, the asymmetric device exhibits significantly high capacitance. Conventional estimation of energy storage parameters, however, cannot be applied for devices with a Faradaic energy storage contribution via redox charge transfer mechanism. Therefore, this work applies a precise measurement of pseudocapacitance contribution at various scan rates to correct the device data that reveals effective capacitance of 120 F g –1 with the energy density of 37 W h kg –1 at 776 W kg –1 . It also retains excellent rate capability, >74% at high current density 25 A g –1 . The charge storage activity and device stability can be further enhanced by introducing redox-active electrolytes that improve specific capacitance, but the rate capabilities deteriorate at high current densities. Further, the principle of asymmetric electrode design is applied to fabricate a bending-tolerant, flexible device by depositing active electrode material on wire-shaped current collector followed by coupling those separated with polyvinyl alcohol gel containing redox electrolyte; it yields 36.8 mF cm –1 specific capacitance at a 0.2 mA cm –1 current density.

Asymmetric Supercapacitor for Long-Duration Power Storage

A document discusses a project in which a series of novel hybrid positive electrode materials was developed and tested in asymmetric capacitors with carbon negative electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the hybrid capacitors was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and a DC charge/discharge test. The hybrid capacitor exhibited ideal capacitor behavior with an extended operating voltage of 1.6 V in aqueous electrolyte, and energy density higher than activated carbon-based supercapacitors. Nanostructured MnO2 is a promising material for electrochemical capacitors (ECS) because of its low cost, environmentally friendly nature, and reasonably high specific capacitance. The charge capacity of the capacitors can be further improved by increasing the specific surface area of the MnO2 electrode material. The power density and space radiation stability of the capacitors can be enhanced by coating the MnO2 nanoparticles with conducting polymers. The conducting polymer coating also helps in radiation-hardening the ECS.

However, reliable and high-performance materials’ design and development is the key for the widespread adoption of batteries and supercapacitors. Quantum dots with fascinating and unusual properties are expected to revolutionize future technologies. However, while the recent discovery of quantum dots honored with a Nobel prize in Chemistry, their benefits for the tenacious problem of energy are not realized yet. In this context, herein, chemical-composition tuning enabled exceptional performance of NiCo 2 O 4 (NCO)/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is reported, which outperform the existing similar materials, in supercapacitors. A comprehensive study is performed on the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical performance evaluation of highly functional NCO/GQDs in supercapacitors delivering enhanced energy efficiency. The high-performance, functional NCO/GQDs electrode materials are synthesized by the incorporation of GQDs into NCO. The effect of variable amount of GQDs on the energy performance characteristics of NCO/GQDs in supercapacitors is studied systematically. In-depth structural and chemical bonding analyses using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic studies indicate that all the NCO/GQDs composites crystallize in the spinel cubic phase of NiCo 2 O 4 while graphene integration evident in all the NCO/GQDs. The scanning electron microscopy imaging analysis reveals homogeneously distributed spherical particles with a size distribution of 5–9 nm validating the formation of QDs. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal that the NCOQDs are anchored on graphene sheets, which provide a high surface area of 42.27 m 2 g –1 and high mesoporosity for the composition of NCO/GQDs-10%. In addition to establishing reliable electrical connection to graphene sheets, the NCOQDs provide reliable 3D-conductive channels for rapid transport throughout the electrode as well as synergistic effects. Chemical-composition tuning, and optimization yields NCO/GQDs-10% to deliver the best specific capacitance of 3940 Fg –1 at 0.5 Ag –1 , where the electrodes retain ≈98% capacitance after 5000 cycles. The NCO/GQD-10%//AC asymmetric supercapacitor device demonstrates outstanding energy density and power density values of 118.04 Wh kg –1 and 798.76 W kg –1 , respectively. The NCO/GQDs-10%//NCO/GQDs-10% symmetric supercapacitor device delivers excellent energy and power density of 24.30 Wh kg –1 and 500 W kg –1 , respectively. These results demonstrate and conclude that NCO/GQDs are exceptional and prospective candidates for developing next-generation high-performance and sustainable energy storage devices.

MXene/graphitic carbon nitride-supported metal selenide for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor and oxygen evolution reaction

We report a new type of combination of rare earth metal selenides (Ce 2 Se 3 and Er 2 Se 3 ) with a Ti 3 C 2 T x /S-doped graphitic carbon nitride heterostructure for bifunctional application in flexible supercapacitors and oxygen evolution reactions. The incorporation of S-doped graphitic carbon nitride in MXenes reduced the layer stacking tendency of both two-dimensional sheets and eliminated volume expansion by forming a heterostructure. Cerium and erbium rare earth metal centers induce reactive surface sites, whereas binary layers of Ti 3 C 2 T x /S-doped graphitic carbon nitride provide a conducting matrix for the homogeneous growth of the metal selenides. The assembled all-solid-state flexible asymmetric supercapacitor exhibited a high specific capacitance of 60 F g –1 , an energy density of 10.1 W h kg –1 (volumetric energy density: 0.9 mW h cm –3 ) at 2 A g –1 , and 100% capacitance retention after 10 000 charge–discharge cycles with good flexibility for real-time applications. Furthermore, the optimum nanohybrid showed a low overpotential of 280 mV and a Tafel slope of 99 mV dec –1 with durable electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, this work is the first to investigate the bifunctional energy efficiency of rare earth metal selenides grown over MXene materials.
