Hyperbolic Reformulation Approach to Enable Efficient Simulation of Groundwater Flow and Reactive Transport

We apply Cattaneo's relaxation approach to the one-dimensional coupled Boussinesq groundwater flow and advection-diffusion-reaction equations, commonly used in engineering applications to simulate contaminant transport in the subsurface. The diffusion-type governing equations are reformulated as a hyperbolic system, augmented by an equation that can be interpreted as a momentum balance. The hyperbolization enables an efficient unified computation of the primary variable and its gradients, for example piezometric head and unit discharge in the Boussinesq equation. An augmented Roe scheme is used to solve the hyperbolic system. The hyperbolized system of equations is studied in a set of steady state and transient test cases with idealized geometry. These test cases confirm the equivalence of the hyperbolic system to its original formulation. The larger time step size of the hyperbolic equation is verified theoretically by means of a stability analysis and numerically in the test cases. Finally, a reach-scale application of flow and transport across a river meander is considered. This application case shows that the performance of the hyperbolic relaxation approach holds for more realistic groundwater flow and transport problems, relevant to water resources management.

Systems and methods for augmenting a satellite based navigation system with alternative position and timing data

Various technologies pertaining to integrating a positioning or timing solution from an alternative position, navigation, or timing (PNT) system into a satellite-based-navigation system are described herein. The PNT system generates a position/timing (P/T) solution that indicates a current position or current time of the PNT system. The P/T solution is provided as input to a simulation of a satellite constellation of the satellite-based-navigation system, and a constellation signal is generated based on the simulation and the P/T solution. The constellation signal is formatted according to a navigation signal format of the satellite-based-navigation system such that when the constellation signal is provided to a receiver of the satellite-based-navigation system, the receiver computes a P/T solution that indicates the current position or the current time identified by the PNT system.

State-by-State comparison of combined heat and power to photovoltaic installations at manufacturing facilities with heat and power loads

Manufacturing facilities with large electricity and steam loads commonly meet those loads with a grid and boiler (GB) system configuration. In this study, two alternatives, a natural gas turbine cycle driven combined heat and power (CHP) system configuration and a grid boiler system augmented with photovoltaics (GB-PV), are investigated sustainable manufacturing in reference to the GB system configuration. For this purpose, their discounted payback period (DPP), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emission reductions, and primary fossil energy impacts are calculated. The major contribution of this study is that it directly compares the application of both CHP and PV technologies at an assumed manufacturing facility in all 50 states of the United States. This highlights the location-specific impacts of the facility. The examined manufacturing facility utility requirements are 5 MW of power and over 12,000 kg/h of 250 kPa and 400 K saturated steam. A DPP of less than 25 years, the technology lifetime, is found in 44 states for the CHP system configuration and 6 states for the GB-PV system configuration. GB-PV and CHP cost-effectively reduce CO 2 in 44 and 38 states, respectively. CHP is better for NO x reduction, whereas GB-PV is better for primary fossil energy reduction.

System and method for transparent augmented reality

A system and method for displaying augmented reality information for a real object. A transparent display displays the information for the real object within a field of view, such that the information and the real object are simultaneously viewable by a user. Data-gathering peripheral devices gather data of the field of view, including a camera gathering visual data for tracking the real object. An articulating arm moveably supports and facilitates repositioning the display and redirecting the data-gathering peripheral devices in a particular direction. A security interlock disables the data-gathering peripherals when the articulating arm is moved beyond a pre-established threshold, thereby preventing the data-gathering peripherals from gathering data of a real environment outside of a limit of the field of view as determined by the pre-established threshold. The security interlock may include an adjustable contact switch which adjustably defines the pre-established threshold in at least one direction.

Vanishing adsorption limit of Riemann problem solutions for the polymer model

Here we examine the vanishing adsorption limit of solutions of Riemann problems for the Glimm–Isaacson model of chemical flooding of a petroleum reservoir. A contact discontinuity is deemed admissible if it is the limit of traveling waves or rarefaction waves for an augmented system that accounts for weak chemical adsorption onto the rock. We prove that this criterion justifies the admissibility criteria adopted previously by Keyfitz–Kranzer, Isaacson–Temple and de Souza–Marchesin, provided that the fractional flow function depends monotonically on chemical concentration. We also demonstrate that the adsorption criterion selects the undercompressive contact discontinuities required to solve the general Riemann problem in an example model with non-monotone dependence.

ADEPT: A Pedagogical Framework for Integrating Agentic AI with Deterministic Scientific Workflows

The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into scientific research promises to accelerate discovery, yet a significant gap remains between the dynamic reasoning of Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents and the static, deterministic nature of canonical scientific workflows. This paper introduces ADEPT (Agentic Discovery and Exploration Platform for Tools), a reference architecture and pedagogical framework explicitly designed to bridge this gap. ADEPT's primary mission is to provide a transparent, "glass-box" environment where researchers and engineers can learn to effectively wrap established scientific software (e.g., BLAST, Nextflow pipelines) and compose it into reliable, agent-driven workflows. We describe its modular, multi-server architecture, which leverages the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for tool serving, LangGraph for robust agentic orchestration, and a secure nsjail-based sandbox for safe code execution. By prioritizing architectural clarity, safety, and modularity, ADEPT serves as an extensible blueprint for building trustworthy AI-augmented systems and fosters the collaborative development necessary to responsibly employ agentic AI for science. We provide practical examples of how to adapt and extend this framework, highlighting its utility in workforce development and AI-readiness capabilities across research and development projects.

Scalable Energy System Expansion Under Uncertainty Using Multi-Stage Stochastic Optimization

The intermittent nature of power from renewable energy sources poses new challenges for electrical grids. This is due to the variable and uncertain nature of the power output from these resources. These features of renewable generation are becoming more relevant to energy system planning as grids reach higher penetration levels of renewable energy. In this presentation we present approaches for energy system planning based on scalable computational approaches which enable the explicit consideration of operational uncertainties in the planning process. Using multi-stage stochastic programming and the progressive hedging algorithm, we compute energy system expansion decisions on modified versions of the RTS-GMLC test system augmented with large amounts of renewable generation.

Power System Resilience Metrics Augmentation for Critical Load Prioritization

One of the major goals of new grid operation regimes, such as transactive energy systems (TESs), is to make the power grid more resilient to withstand natural or man-made disasters and potential reliability events, and to continue to serve the maximum number of its customers. But it is a well-known fact to system operators that not all customers are the same. This implies that any discussion of TESs’ impacts on the resilience of the power system should consider the needs of its critical customers (such as the power system operation centers, fire and police stations, and hospitals) over those of other customers. When evaluating the resilience of the system, bonus points must be awarded to any system that could maintain its power supply to critical customers during a disturbance that may cause an outage. This report discusses critical infrastructure (CI) as found in the literature and then categorizes it based on the field to which the operations belong (such as human life/safety-related, operations management, necessary city operation, industrial customers, etc.). Each of these CI categories is further divided into types of critical customers (e.g., the human life/safety-related category has different types of customers like hospitals, fire and police stations, etc.). The entire demand of each of the critical customer types is not categorized as critical load (CL); instead, only a portion of the total load of these critical customers is characterized as critical load. This is done based on the categories of equipment, the function of which is crucial in the operation of the overall facility. CL categorization is performed to provide the ratio of the critical load portion to the overall load , so that it can serve as a parameter in the resilience evaluation of the grid through a metrics-based approach. Such categorization is important as it helps to augment the existing quantifiable resilience metrics with CL categorization. The metrics for a power system need to not only consider how well a system performed during a disturbance event, but also how it reduced strain and supplied power to its CLs. The first step in this process is characterize CLs in the system. After CL characterization, the next step is the inclusion of these loads in the resilience metrics. To that end, in this report weight-based augmentation of resilience metrics is proposed, where certain customers (the ones that are categorized as critical) are assigned higher weights than others. Though an overview of assigning weights to customers is discussed, there is no one-size-fits-all approach for every power system. The decisions made about assigning such weights to customers vary greatly from one operator to another, based on their unique systems and the current and predicted states of critical customers. This decision-making can include the type of disturbance event, which might only affect certain parts of the system. In general, analyzing critical customers before an event helps understand system vulnerabilities. It also helps in planning and conducting operations during the event, evaluating system performance after the event, and supporting better planning for future events. An alternative to the current practices of managing the grid for outages is an innovative TES, which has the potential to provide a platform for including distributed energy resources for managing CLs. This report also describes how TES qualities can help (1) to maintain power supply to critical customers for uninterrupted operations and (2) to restore lost power supply to the critical customers rapidly.

Flexspander: augmenting expander networks in high-performance systems with optical bandwidth steering

Communication efficiency is one of the deciding factors in determining many of today’s high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Traditionally, HPC systems have been on static network topologies, making them inflexible to the variety of skewed traffic demands that may arise due to the spatial locality inherent in many applications. To handle traffic locality, researchers have proposed integrating optical circuit switches (OCSs) into the network architecture, which reconfigures the network topology to alter and dynamically adapt to the predicted traffic. In this paper, we present a novel reconfigurable network topology called Flexspander. Beyond offering a flexible interconnect, Flexspander also offers full flexibility in terms of construction and can be built with any arbitrary combination of commercial electrical packet switches and OCSs. We evaluate Flexspander performance through extensive simulations with multiple network traces, and our results show improved performance for Flexspander over currently proposed static and reconfigurable topologies in terms of the flow completion time.

Chapter 18: Learning and Tracking Ad Hoc Fiducial Markers in Spatial Augmented Reality

We describe a spatial augmented reality system with a tangible user interface used to control computer simulations of complex systems. In spatial augmented reality, the user’s physical space is augmented with projected imagery, blending real objects with projected information, and a tangible user interface enables users to manipulate physical objects as controllers for interactive visualizations. Our system learns ad hoc objects in the user’s environment as fiducial markers (i.e., objects that are visually recognized and tracked). When combined with simulation and visualization tools, these interfaces allow the user to control simulations or ensembles of simulations via physical objects using apt metaphors. While other research has leveraged the use of depth cameras, our system enables the use of standard cameras in readily available smartphones and webcams and has an implementation that runs completely in JavaScript in the web browser. We discuss the prerequisite object-recognition requirements for such tangible user interfaces and describe computer-vision and machine-learning algorithms meeting those requirements. We conclude by presenting example applications, which are also available online.

Objective Phenotyping of Root System Architecture Using Image Augmentation and Machine Learning in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Active breeding programs specifically for root system architecture (RSA) phenotypes remain rare; however, breeding for branch and taproot types in the perennial crop alfalfa is ongoing. Phenotyping in this and other crops for active RSA breeding has mostly used visual scoring of specific traits or subjective classification into different root types. While image-based methods have been developed, translation to applied breeding is limited. This research is aimed at developing and comparing image-based RSA phenotyping methods using machine and deep learning algorithms for objective classification of 617 root images from mature alfalfa plants collected from the field to support the ongoing breeding efforts. Our results show that unsupervised machine learning tends to incorrectly classify roots into a normal distribution with most lines predicted as the intermediate root type. Encouragingly, random forest and TensorFlow-based neural networks can classify the root types into branch-type, taproot-type, and an intermediate taproot-branch type with 86% accuracy. With image augmentation, the prediction accuracy was improved to 97%. Coupling the predicted root type with its prediction probability will give breeders a confidence level for better decisions to advance the best and exclude the worst lines from their breeding program. This machine and deep learning approach enables accurate classification of the RSA phenotypes for genomic breeding of climate-resilient alfalfa.

Improving Frequency Stability and Minimizing Load Shedding Events by Adopting Grid-Scale Energy Storage with Grid Forming Inverters

The upward adoption trend of renewable generation not only means cleaner energy integrated into modern power grids, but also that most new generation sources are based on front-end inverter bridges, used as interfaces to most wind generation and all the solar PV. It is well known that due to their power electronics-based construction rather than rotational shafts, these sources do not provide inertia inherently, nor substantial amounts of short-circuit currents. However, stable energy such as what can be stored in energy storage systems, although interfaced via inverters, can be controlled to respond to system disturbances in a manner that emulates inertial behavior. This paper focuses on the application of such energy storage systems to augment inertia in the island of Puerto Rico. To do so, a user defined inverter model that contains grid forming capabilities and fast frequency response is modeled and integrated into the real transmission system in power flow and dynamics software. Energy storage is then connected to two selected areas so that it not only provides frequency regulation to avoid widespread load shedding events, but also other tangible benefits. The simulated cases suggest that even relatively small energy storage systems can avert load shedding events if adequately placed in the transmission network.

FATHOMS-RAG: A Framework for the Assessment of Thinking and Observation in Multimodal Systems that use Retrieval Augmented Generation

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising paradigm for improving factual accuracy in large language models (LLMs). We introduce a benchmark designed to evaluate RAG pipelines as a whole, evaluating a pipelines ability to ingest several modalities of information. We present (1) a curated dataset of 93 questions designed to evaluate a pipeline's ability to ingest textual data, tables, images, multimodal data, and cross-document multimodal data; (2) a phrase-level recall metric for correctness; (3) a nearest-neighbor embedding classifier in an attempt to classify pipeline hallucinations; (4) a comparative evaluation of 2 pipelines built with open-source retrieval mechanisms and 4 closed-source foundational models; and (5) a third-party human evaluation of the alignment of our correctness and hallucination metrics. We find that closed-source pipelines significantly outperform open-source pipelines in both the correctness and halucination metrics, with a wider performance gap in questions relying on multimodal and cross-document information. We also find after a human evaluation of our correctness and hallucination metric compared with our questions and pipeline responses, average agreement was 4.62 for correctness 4.53 for hallucination detection on a 1-5 Likert scale with 5 being strongly agree with our determination.

Control Algorithms for Dual-wavefront Sensor Single-conjugate Adaptive Optics

High-contrast imaging systems using active control with adaptive optics (AO) are often limited by non-common path (NCP) aberrations that are seen only at the final science image. AO systems employing focal-plane wavefront sensors (FP-WFSs) are able to simultaneously correct NCP aberrations and measure science images, but they typically require a second stage of control that adds system cost and complexity. We present control algorithms to augment AO systems with FP-WFSs within their existing control setup. We demonstrate inter-arm NCP aberration transfer can be mitigated through temporal filtering, present frequency- and time-domain validation of controller stability and performance, and discuss the optimality of the chosen controllers. This work will enable the development, testing, and installation of FP-WFS technologies for direct imaging of exoplanets.

Utilization of Data Augmentation Techniques in Automated Inspection Systems for Defect Detection in Metals With Limited Data

Accurate identification of defects on metal surfaces is of great interest to many industry sectors, such as the automotive and aerospace industries. In contrast to conventional manual inspection techniques, recent automated inspection systems employ deep learning models trained to detect defects rapidly and precisely. The development of these models often requires a substantial image dataset to acquire adequate knowledge of defect features and enhance their predictive accuracy. When data is limited, augmentation techniques are often used to improve the precision and accuracy of defect detection systems. This study examined the prediction performance of two object detection models, namely Faster Region‐based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R‐CNN) and You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8), to identify dent defects in limited images of cast iron cylinder head surfaces. The original image set contains 46 images with 563 dents. To overcome limited data availability, common image augmentation techniques along with a copy‐paste method were applied. Results show that standard augmentation improved YOLOv8 accuracy by 8.00% and average precision (AP) by 3.00%. On the other hand, the copy‐paste technique achieved a 20.00% increase in accuracy and a 1% increase in AP with just 200 synthetic dents. Furthermore, these results provide support for using the copy‐paste augmentation strategy to enhance defect detection performance, with a limited dataset, contributing to more accurate defect identification in remanufacturing processes.
