Corrosion evaluation of Ti–6Al–4V manufactured by electron beam melting in Ringer’s physiological solution: an in vitro study of the passive film

We report that electrochemical characteristics and semiconducting behavior of additively manufactured electron beam melted (EBM) and wrought (WR) Ti–6Al–4V (Ti-G5) are compared in Ringer’s physiological solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) confirmed the α+β structure of the tested materials, with two different microstructure types of “bimodal” and “basket-weave” for WR and EBM, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) revealed that the corrosion current density for EBM (i corr =0.27±0.06 μA cm -2 ) is less than the WR (i corr =0.70±0.05 μA cm -2 ). Moreover, potentiostatic polarization (PS) that was employed to form the passive layers at three different potentials of 300, 500, and 700 mV Ag/AgCl , showed that the passive films on the EBM sample are thinner. This finding was confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Furthermore, through Mott–Schottky (M–S) analysis, donor densities on WR passive films were found to be ~1.5 times larger than EBM. Although PS and EIS confirmed that the passive layer on EBM is thinner, it provides higher corrosion resistance than WR. The passive layer on both samples were found to have n-type characteristics with a duplex structure.

Survey on Efficient and Productive Use of Electricity In Women-Run Small Businesses in Uganda

In Uganda, women make up a large portion of the service sector, notably in informal small and micro businesses such as retail shops, food preparation, tailoring, sewing, beer brewing, basket weaving, healthcare, and hairdressing. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and USAID, in partnership with the Clean Energy Enthusiasts (CEE), a local implementer in Uganda, designed and conducted a participatory survey to collect baseline data and information on the current state of benefits to energy access. The study included data on the uptake of efficient and productive electric (EPUE) equipment, business skills, and financial needs among small and mid-size women-led businesses in Uganda. The objective of the survey was to build evidence and identify economic activities where access to electricity has a positive impact on women’s empowerment by helping them develop new and existing businesses, improve productivity, and increase their income. The survey included questions about the type of electric equipment used and needed, electric consumption patterns, alternative sources to electricity, and business and capital barriers related to increased access. The survey results provided the basis for designing a training program tailored to the need of women entrepreneurs in the region.

Ross Filter Diode Array Analysis for Red Sage

A Ross Filter Diode Array (RFDA) diagnostic was fielded on the Cygnus x-ray source during the final stages of the Red Sage campaign. This report briefly describes the motivation for the diagnostic, its construction and operating principles, and the raw data that it produces followed by an in-depth look at the procedures used to analyze this data. RFDA signals from eight Cygnus shots conducted after the conclusion of Nightshade C are analyzed and those results are discussed. Finally, recommendations are made to improve the diagnostic for future experiments.
