Two-photon above-threshold ionization of helium

Multiphoton ionization provides a clear window into the nature of electron correlations in the helium atom. In the present study, the final-state energy range extends up to the region near the N = 2 and N = 3 ionization thresholds, where two-photon ionization proceeds via continuum intermediate states above the lowest threshold. Our calculations are performed using multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) and the streamlined R-matrix method. The sum and integration over all intermediate states in the two-photon ionization amplitude is evaluated using the inhomogeneous R-matrix method developed by Robicheaux and Gao. The seamless connection of that method with MQDT allows us to present high-resolution spectra of the final-state Rydberg resonances. Our analysis classifies the resonances above the N = 2 threshold in terms of their group theory quantum numbers. Furthermore, their dominant decay channels are found to obey the previously conjectured propensity rule far more weakly for these even-parity states than was observed for the odd-parity states relevant to single-photon ionization.

Optical potential approach to the electron-atom impact ionization threshold problem

The problem of the threshold law for electron-atom impact ionization is reconsidered as an extrapolation of inelastic cross sections through the ionization threshold. The cross sections are evaluated from a distorted wave matrix element, the final state of which describes the scattering from the Nth excited state of the target atom. The actual calculation is carried for the e-H system, and a model is introduced which is shown to preserve the essential properties of the problem while at the same time reducing the dimensionability of the Schrodinger equation. Nevertheless, the scattering equation is still very complex. It is dominated by the optical potential which is expanded in terms of eigen-spectrum of QHQ. It is shown by actual calculation that the lower eigenvalues of this spectrum descend below the relevant inelastic thresholds; it follows rigorously that the optical potential contains repulsive terms. Analytical solutions of the final state wave function are obtained with several approximations of the optical potential.

Polarization asymmetry in two-electron photodetachment - A cogent test of the ionization threshold law

A very sensitive test of the electron-atom ionization threshold law is suggested: for spin-aligned heavy negative ions it consists of measuring the polarization asymmetry A(PA) coming from double detachment by left- versus right-circularly polarized light. The respective yields are worked out for the Te(-) (5p)5 2P(3/2) ion. The Coulomb-dipole theory predicts A(PA) to be the ratio of two oscillating functions in sharp contrast to any power law (specifically that of Wannier, 1953) for which the ratio is expected to be a smooth function of energy.

Multi-MeV Electrons from Above-Threshold Ionization of the Neon K-Shell

We present measurements of integrated electron energies produced by above-threshold ionization (ATI) of neon in a laser field with intensity exceeding 10 20 W/cm 2 . We observe electrons with energy exceeding 10 MeV ejected in the laser forward direction above a threshold intensity of 2 ×10 20 W/cm 2 . Here, we compare to ATI models using both tunneling (ADK-PPT) and barrier suppression ionization and observe the onset of ATI at a higher threshold intensity than predicted by these 15 models.

Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations of LnO (Ln = La and Ce)

Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy was used to measure the vibronic spectra of LnO (Ln = La and Ce). Single-reference coupled cluster and relativistic multireference configuration calculations were carried out to compare with the measured vibronic energies. The spectrum of LaO displays a single vibronic band system, while that of CeO shows multiple ones. The ionization energies of LaO and CeO are measured as 5.2446 (6) and 5.3332(6) eV, respectively, which are a hundredfold improvement over the literature values. The vibrational energies of the neutral molecule and corresponding ion reveal the charge effect on the metal-oxygen bond of both species. The single band system in the spectrum of LaO arises from the transition of the ground state of the neutral molecule with the La(6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) valence configuration to the ground state of the singly charged ion with the La(6s o )O(2p 6 ) configuration. Here, the multiple band systems in the spectrum of CeO are attributed to the spin-orbit coupling for the Ce(4f 1 6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the neutral molecule and an excited state for the Ce(4f 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the ion.

Inclusion of Theta(12) dependence in the Coulomb-dipole theory of the ionization threshold

The Coulomb-dipole (CD) theory of the electron-atom impact-ionization threshold law is extended to include the full electronic repulsion. It is found that the threshold law is altered to a form in contrast to the previous angular-independent model. A second energy regime, is also identified wherein the 'threshold' law reverts to its angle-independent form. In the final part of the paper the dipole parameter is estimated to be about 28. This yields numerical estimates of E(a) = about 0.0003 and E(b) = about 0.25 eV.

Above-threshold ionization at laser intensity greater than 10 20 W / cm 2

Here we present experimental observation of above-threshold ionization (ATI) electrons produced by ionization of the neon K shell in a laser field where intensity exceeds 10 20 W/cm 2 . An array of plastic scintillating calorimeter detectors was used to measure the high-energy electrons at four angles in the laser forward direction. Coarse energy resolution was obtained using aluminum filters of several thicknesses to block lower-energy electrons. A threshold intensity around 2×10 20 W/cm 2 is observed for production of energetic ATI electrons in the laser forward direction, with maximum electron energy exceeding 10 MeV. L-shell electrons with energies <1.4 MeV are scattered farther forward along the laser direction than expected. We present comparisons of the measured total electron energies to the predictions of Monte Carlo models employing the ADK-PPT ionization model and the Augst barrier suppression ionization model.

Effects of plasma microfields on radiative transitions from atomic levels above the ionization threshold

The effects of plasma electric microfields on line-like optical features arising from atomic levels above the ionization threshold are investigated within the framework of the quasi-static and single-frequency dynamic-field theories of spectral-line broadening. The 2p(23)P to 1s2p(3)P and 2s2p(3)P to 1s2s(3)S transitions in helium and helium-like ions are treated as examples. The mixing of the doubly excited levels in the perturbing microfields produces Stark broadening of the emission lines and induces autoionization of the 2p(23)P level, which, unlike the 2s2p(3)P level, is metastable against autoionization in the field-free environment. Determination of the complete Stark-broadening profiles in thermal plasmas is complicated by the need to include the effects of both the (quasi-static) ion and the (dynamic) electron fields. Under nonequilibrium conditions, where electric fields from either electron or ion plasma waves can far exceed nearby particle fields, the calculation and interpretation of the line shapes may be simplified and could provide a diagnostic probe of the wave-field properties.

Polarization-Dependent Self-Injection by Above Threshold Ionization Heating in a Laser Wakefield Accelerator

Here, we report on the experimental observation of a decreased self-injection threshold by using laser pulses with circular polarization in laser wakefield acceleration experiments in a nonpreformed plasma, compared to the usually employed linear polarization. A significantly higher electron beam charge was also observed for circular polarization compared to linear polarization over a wide range of parameters. Theoretical analysis and quasi-3D particle-in-cell simulations reveal that the self-injection and hence the laser wakefield acceleration is polarization dependent and indicate a different injection mechanism for circularly polarized laser pulses, originating from larger momentum gain by electrons during above threshold ionization. This enables electrons to meet the trapping condition more easily, and the resulting higher plasma temperature was confirmed via spectroscopy of the XUV plasma emission.

Energy scaling beyond the gas ionization threshold with divided-pulse nonlinear compression

Here, we demonstrate how pulse energy in hollow-core fiber can be scaled beyond gas-ionization limitations using divided-pulse nonlinear compression. With one pulse, ionization limits our fiber’s pulse energy to 2.7-mJ output at an input of 4 mJ. By dividing to four low-energy pulses before the fiber, we eliminated the ionization and scaled the pulse energy 2.5× to 6.6 mJ at an input energy of 10 mJ. Larger energy scaling is possible, as our maximum pulse energy has not reached the new gas ionization threshold. Our results motivate applying the method to state-of-the-art systems for large pulse energy scaling without prohibitive system size increases.

Electronic states and transitions of PrO and PrO + probed by threshold ionization spectroscopy and spin–orbit multiconfiguration perturbation theory

The precise ionization energy of praseodymium oxide (PrO) seeded in supersonic molecular beams is measured with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. Here, a total of 33 spin–orbit (SO) states of PrO and 23 SO states of PrO + are predicted by second-order multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate perturbation (MCQDPT2) theory. Electronic transitions from four low-energy SO levels of the neutral molecule to the ground state of the singly charged cation are identified by combining the MATI spectroscopic measurements with the MCQDPT2 calculations. The precise ionization energy is used to reassess the ionization energies and the reaction enthalpies of the Pr + O → PrO + + e – chemi-ionization reaction reported in the literature. An empirical formula that uses atomic electronic parameters is proposed to predict the ionization energies of lanthanide monoxides, and the empirical calculations match well with available precise experimental measurements.

On the Contribution of the Long-Range Scattering Potential in the Process of Multiphoton Above-Threshold Ionization of Atoms in the Laser Field

Using the quantum mechanical analysis of stimulated bremsstrahlung of an electron on an electrostatic potential in the field of a strong electromagnetic wave in the generalized eikonal approximation, the simplified formula for the probability of multiphoton above-threshold ionization of a hydrogen-like atom in the laser field is obtained, taking into account the interaction of the photoelectron with the long-range Coulomb field of the residual ion.

Direct laser ion acceleration and above-threshold ionization at intensities from 10 21 W/cm 2 to 3 × 10 23 W/cm 2

Calculations on the dynamics of ions and electrons in near-infrared laser fields at intensities up to 3 × 10 23 W/cm 2 are presented here. We explore the acceleration of ions in a laser focus by conservation of canonical momentum during ionization events and by the ponderomotive force in the f/1 focal geometry required to reach such intensity. At intensities exceeding 10 23 W/cm 2 , highly charged ions are expelled from the laser focus before they can interact with the laser pulse at peak intensity, decreasing the predicted ionization yields of deeply bound states. We consider the interaction of a tightly focused, f/1 laser pulse with krypton at an intensity of 3 × 10 23 W /cm 2 and a pulse duration of 140 fs.We find that the ions and electrons are accelerated to energies in excess of 2 MeV/nucleon and 1.4 GeV, respectively. Ponderomotive expulsion of the parent ions decreases the total number of ultrarelativistic above-threshold ionization electrons produced by tunneling ionization from the K-shell states of krypton but does not change their energy spectrum.

Photoabsorption and photoionization of N2 near the first ionization threshold

The photoabsorption and photoionization spectra of molecular nitrogen, N2, near the first ionisation threshold display numerous intense resonances that have not been satisfactorily assigned to date. Principal among these is a pair of broad resonances between 126,200 and 126,600 cm−1 commonly referred to as the ”cathedral” bands. Here, we present new double-resonance photoionization spectra in this region recorded via the 𝑎′′ 1Σ+ 𝑔,𝑣′=0 intermediate state as well as new high-resolution, vacuum-ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of 14N2,14N15N, and 15N2 to provide additional insight into the assignment of these features. Progress towards a fully consistent interpretation of the existing data on these bands is discussed, and a route towards a comprehensive description of the N2 absorption spectrum up to the 𝐵 2Σ+ 𝑢 state of N+ 2 is proposed.

Momentum-resolved above-threshold ionization of deuterated water

We present momentum-resolved coincidence measurements of strong-field single and double ionization of deuterated water (D 2 O) using intense few-cycle laser pulses. We measure the vector momentum of electrons and ions resulting from the laser-molecule interaction. This enables us to measure the photoelectron spectrum for electrons in coincidence with fragment ions having different momenta, which can be related to different final states of the cation and dication. The photoelectron spectra for different fragment ion momenta show striking differences, which can be interpreted in terms of the removal of electrons from different molecular orbitals, including the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), as well as more deeply bound ones (e.g., HOMO-2). Here, we discuss our measurements in light of calculations which model the strong-field light matter interaction.

Photo-Double Ionization: Threshold Law and Low-Energy Behavior

The threshold law for photoejection of two electrons from atoms (PDI) is derived from a modification of the Coulomb-dipole (C-D) theory. The C-D theory applies to two-electron ejection from negative ions (photo-double detachment:PDD). The modification consists of correctly accounting for the fact that in PDI that the two escaping electrons see a Coulomb field, asymptotically no matter what their relative distances from the residual ion are. We find in the contralinear spherically symmetric model that the analytic threshold law Q(E),i. e. the yield of residual ions, to be Qf(E)approaches E + CwE(sup gamma(w)) + CE(sup 5/4)sin[1/2 ln(E + theta)]/ln(E). The first and third terms are beyond the Wannier law. Our threshold law can only be rigorously justified for residual energies less than or equal to 10(exp -3) eV. Nevertheless in the present experimental range (0.1 - 4 eV), the form, even without the second term, can be fitted to experimental results of PDI for He, Li, and Be, in contrast to the Wannier law which has a larger deviation from the data for Li and Be, for both of which the data show signs of modulation.
