Dry-processed electrodes enabled by polytetrafluoroethylene fibrillation for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

The dry processing technique of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibrillation offers significant advancements in cost reduction, environmental impact, and electrochemical performance. Dry processing alone allows for ∼ 20–60% cost reduction and increases of up to 40 mg cm⁻2 of areal loading – it typically comes at a reduction of rate capability. By leveraging the network structure of fibers, this method enhances rate capability and cycling performance, providing a compelling alternative to the conventional and currently predominant wet processing. The review delves into PTFE fibrillation mechanisms and examines critical influencing factors including material properties and processing parameters. It also discusses challenges associated with the electrodes fabricated by PTFE fibrillation, including structural instability due to insufficient PTFE fibrillization, compromised electrical conductivity from an insufficient conductive network, inhomogeneous dispersion resulting from the absence of solvents, restricted ionic transport due to increased electrode thickness, inadequate adhesion to current collector because of low surface energy of PTFE, electrochemical degradation due to low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of PTFE, particle damage during processing and environmental concerns related PTFE being a perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Recent research innovations aimed at mitigating these issues, their application in beyond-lithium batteries, and future research directions are thoroughly discussed.

Site-Selective Modification of Lanthanum Oxychloride to Modulate Halide-Ion Conduction

Design principles for solid-state halide-ion conduction remain poorly defined despite the increasing importance of halide ions as charge carriers in a variety of energy storage and electrochemical computing technologies. Here, we employ a siteselective modification strategy in which aliovalent cations are preferentially introduced at the La 3+ crystallographic site of LaOCl in the 2c Wyckoff position, enabling controlled generation of chloride vacancies and modification of lattice dynamics to enhance chloride-ion conductivity. Aliovalent substitution of La 3+ with Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Sr 2+ generates charge-compensating Cl vacancies while preserving the matlockite crystal structure. X-ray excited optical luminescence measurements with Dy 3+ as a reporter chromophore evidence vacancy-derived midgap electronic states and an extended energy range of radiation-less Auger electron emission corresponding to substantial modification of electronic structure and local electrostatic potentials. Ca alloying at 8−10 at. % increases the chloride-ion conductivity by three- to 4 orders of magnitude as compared to unalloyed LaOCl, whereas comparable amounts of Sr- and Mg-alloying in LaOCl imbue less pronounced conductivity enhancements. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements reveal that Ca- and Sr-alloying substantially soften the La−Cl sublattice and yield a more compliant crystal lattice that can deform to accommodate Cl-ion migration. Structure solutions derived from Rietveld refinements to powder Xray diffraction reveal larger O−La−Cl bond-angle deviations and enhanced out-of-plane cation displacements for Ca- and Sr-alloyed compositions as compared to Mg-alloyed LaOCl. Such local distortions enhance chloride-ion mobility by reshaping and flattening vacancy migration energy landscapes and by modulating lattice dynamics governing anion conduction. We further illustrate that coalloying of Ca with Mg and Sr induces a nonmonotonic conductivity−defect stoichiometry relationship that can be rationalized based on cooperative interactions. Together, these results establish site-selective aliovalent alloying of LaOCl as an effective route to halide-ion solid electrolytes and provide broadly generalizable design principles for site-selective modification to induce vacancy formation and lattice softening to engender facile anion transport

Three-Dimensional Microbatteries beyond Lithium Ion

Ubiquitous implementation of microelectronics in microelectromechanical systems requires stable power supplies and necessitates development of on-chip miniature power sources, such as microbatteries. However, conventional thin-film batteries exhibit limited surface area and sluggish diffusion kinetics with insufficient energy and power density. In contrast, three-dimensional (3D) beyond-lithium (sodium, zinc, aluminum, etc.) battery architectures can significantly enhance the areal energy and power and meanwhile maintain the low-cost mass production. Despite this, the future of beyond-lithium systems is being questioned as they each present shortcomings. In this Comment, we discuss scientific advancements in reaction kinetics control, electrochemical stability improvements, and reaction mechanism understandings in 3D beyond-lithium battery systems, and finally, call for intensive research effort to address the challenges and develop strategies that can pave the way toward their commercialization.

High performance aluminum-air flow batteries through double-face architecture and laser-modified and friction-stir processed 3D anode

Aluminum-air batteries (AAB) are regarded as one of the most promising beyond-lithium high-energy-density storage candidates. Here, this paper introduces a three-dimensional (3D) Al 7075 anode enabled by femtosecond laser and friction-stir process which, along with a special double-face anode architecture provides world-class performance. Electrochemical characterizations prove that the corrosion resistance of the modified 3D Al 7075 FSP anode was enhanced, and electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) was increased compared with that of normal Al 7075 anode. Friction-stir processing reduced the mean grain size from 30 μm to 3 μm. The discharge performance of 3D Al 7075 FSP anode is shown to be quite stable, and the average values of energy density are significantly increased from 2256 mWh g –1 to 2941 mWh g –1 at 100 mA cm –2 . In a double-face flowing Al-air battery system, the 3D Al 7075 FSP anode exhibited significantly better electrocatalytic performance (discharge voltage of 0.76 V at 400 mA cm –2 , and power density of 337.8 mW cm –2 ) than that of a commercial Al 7075 anode.
