Development of High-Granularity Dual-Readout Calorimetry with psec Timing

Dual-readout and particle flow algorithm (PFA) are technologies proposed for precise jet energy measurement in future colliders. While PFA requires highly granular calorimeters, dual-readout has mainly been used with fiber-based calorimeters that do not have highly segmented capabilities. It is still non-trivial to combine these two technologies in one calorimeter system because of the use of fibers in most of the dualreadout calorimeters, which is not compatible with the high granularity requirement of PFA technologies. The aim of this study is to develop a novel calorimetry that combines dual-readout and PFA by adopting a highly segmented tile-based configuration. This paper compares the improvement of energy resolution using dual-readout approach across several configurations of highly granular hadron calorimeters through simulation. Results indicate that setups with fine sampling and close placement of scintillators and Cherenkov detectors improve dual-readout performance.

Dual-Readout Calorimetry for Future Experiments Probing Fundamental Physics

In this White Paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we detail the status and prospects for dual-readout calorimetry. While all calorimeters allow estimation of energy depositions in their active material, dual-readout calorimeters aim to provide additional information on the light produced in the sensitive media via, for example, wavelength and polarization, and/or a precision timing measurements, allowing an estimation of the shower-by-shower particle content. Utilizing this knowledge of the shower particle content may allow unprecedented energy resolution for hadronic particles and jets and new types of particle flow algorithms. We also discuss the impact continued development of this kind of calorimetry could have on precision on Higgs boson property measurements at future colliders.

Preliminary Results from ADRIANO2 Test Beams

A novel high-granularity, dual-readout calorimetric technique (ADRIANO2) is under development as part of the research program of T1604 Collaboration. (Talk Presented at the 19th International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics (CALOR 2022), University of Sussex, Sussex, UK, 16–20 May 2022). The building block of such a calorimeter consists of a pair of optically isolated, small size tiles made of scintillating plastic and lead glass. The prompt Čerenkov light from the glass can be exploited to perform high resolution timing measurements, while the high granularity provides good resolution of the spatial components of the shower. Dual-readout compensation and particle flow techniques can be applied simultaneously to the scintillation and to the Čerenkov section, providing excellent energy resolution as well as PID particle identification. These characteristics make ADRIANO2 a 6-D detector, suited for High Energy as well as High Intensity experiments. A report on the status of the ADRIANO2 project, preliminary measurements of light yield, and current and future R&D plans by T1604 Collaboration are discussed.
