Optimal Energy Dispatch Controller for Fuel Cell-Integrated Multi-Zone Building

Stationary fuel cells provide potential opportunities for energy savings when integrated with buildings. Through smart dispatch of both electrical power and heat generated by the fuel cells and managing the building loads, the buildings can achieve more efficient operation. In this paper, we develop an optimal energy dispatch controller to operate a fuel cell-integrated building. The controller leverages the inherent thermal storage and the dispatchable fuel cell to reduce its operating cost and to allow the building to participate in grid services. The proposed controller is implemented on two types of commercial buildings, a large office building and a large hotel, and the effectiveness of the controller is demonstrated through simulations. The results also indicate that the potential saving varies significantly with different system parameters, including season, fuel prices, and equipment sizing, which provide helpful insights for building operators and other stake holders.

A high-performance and durable direct NH 3 tubular protonic ceramic fuel cell integrated with an internal catalyst layer

Nickel-based cermet anode-supported protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) show great potential for direct utilization of ammonia. However, the insufficient activity of anode and the deterioration of anode activity/durability caused by the undesired interaction between nickel and ammonia greatly limit the application. Here, we report tubular PCFCs embedded with a catalytic iron layer. Such cells show peak power densities of 1.507 W cm -2 and 1.078 W cm -2 at 700 °C when using H 2 and NH 3 as fuel, respectively, which are the highest tubular PCFC performance so far ever reported. In addition, the stability of cells with the catalyst layer has been dramatically enhanced when compared with that of cells without the catalyst layer. As a result, the enhancement of activity and durability is attributed to the catalytic activity of iron for ammonia decomposition, through which the direct contact between nickel and ammonia has been minimized and the anode structure has therefore been protected.

Life cycle analysis of a hydrogen production system based on solid oxide electrolysis cells integrated with different energy and wastewater sources

Hydrogen production via water electrolysis is a promising and evolving technology. The solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is one of the several technologies for this purpose. They are alternatives to the traditional hydrogen production from fossil fuels to enhance global energy decarbonization. However, in the bid for sustainability and a green economy, these technologies are not free from causing some environmental burdens. Using life cycle assessment (LCA), the greenhouse gas emission and degree of environmental impacts by these technologies can be identified and measured throughout their lifespan. This study addresses how to quantify these CO 2 emission impacts for an electrolytic system with different energy sources. The LCA of a novel integrated hydrogen production SOEC system with energy from solar photovoltaic and bituminous powerplant is performed using simaPro, the leading global LCA solution software. Measuring the environmental impact of the electrolytic operation in terms of weight, the bituminous powerplant poses damage which is, on average 700% more than solar PV. The thermal-to-hydrogen efficiency of the SOEC system is 56%, and a probable 28% reduction in carbon footprint with heat integration. The steam generation and the manufacturing of the SOEC have a very high environmental impact potential on the system. Here, we recommend LCA and net energy analysis is carried out for every new hydrogen technology and adequate comparison to enhance sustainable and green economy.

Plant Cell Biology International Meeting 2022

There is a strong need to develop the knowledge base that will enable the rational design of improved crop species for sustainable agriculture and biomass production. To attain this goal, researchers must learn how plant cells integrate metabolism and cellular dynamics during growth and in response to environmental challenges. Meeting these goals require data sharing and the development and training of faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students in state-of-the-art quantitative integrative cell biology methods. The inaugural Plant Cell Biology International (PCBI) meeting capitalized on the interaction between two well-established plant cell biology communities across the Atlantic, the Midwest Plant Cell Dynamics (PCD) and the European Network for Plant Endomembrane Research (ENPER) and provided a framework to meet these goals. The conference took place in person successfully during August 1-5th 2022 in Crete, Greece. The conference offered opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, young investigators across the globe to present their results and interact across different disciplines. The conference provided an open and inclusive forum for oral presentations that allowed all labs to share research results. It was attended over 80 % by students, postdocs and young investigators. Workshops on best practices for image acquisition and processing pipelines, publication guidelines by scientific journal editors, professional development and well-being benefited the participants at large. Overall, this was the inaugural joint Plant Cell Biology International conference that for the first time officially brought together plant cell biologists to discuss opportunities and challenges in the field to gain a mechanistic understanding of complex biological processes and advance sustainable agriculture. Due to its success, it was rescheduled for 2025 in Crete, to continue strengthening the plant cell biology community and exchanging knowledge and expertise across the globe.

Investigating the Relationship between the Cell Wall Integrity Pathway and Unfolded Protein Response

Plants have made significant contributions to astronaut health in spaceflight missions. To further spaceflight research in optimizing plant viability, this study aims to understand the factors involved in maintaining cell wall integrity, which is vital to plant morphology and structural stability. Spaceflight can negatively impact the cell wall; thus, it is crucial to investigate how to mitigate spaceflight stressors to maintain the integrity of the cell wall. The structural integrity of plants’ cell walls depends on secondary cell wall biogenesis, which enables the repair and architectural support of plants like A. thaliana. This biogenesis is triggered by a signal transduction cascade: first initiated by cell wall stress, the CWI (cell wall integrity) pathway is activated, followed by the UPR (unfolded protein response), then the cell wall’s integrity is maintained through secondary cell wall biogenesis. Through a re-analysis of GeneLab Dataset 321 (GLDS-321), a study from NASA’s Open Science Data Repository that investigates the effects of spaceflight on the UPR, several genes were found to be associated with the cell wall. This proposal postulates a relationship between the UPR and the CWI pathway and their direct effect on secondary cell wall biogenesis by investigating IRX7, a gene associated with secondary cell wall biogenesis. The predicted outcome of overexpressing IRX7 is increased resilience of the cell wall by upregulating both the UPR and the CWI pathway, while silencing IRX7 is predicted to compromise the cell wall integrity by downregulating the UPR and the CWI pathway. This study will give insight into the needed measures to increase cell wall resilience in stressful environments: As spaceflight durations increase and uncertain climate change events progress on Earth, understanding how to optimize cell wall resilience – a fundamental pillar of plant health – can effectively enhance mass crop production and quality and ensure the physical and psychological health of astronauts in long-term space missions.

Economic competitiveness of fuel cell onsite integrated energy systems

The economic competitiveness of fuel cell onsite integrated energy systems (OS/IES) in residential and commercial buildings is examined. The analysis is carried out for three different buildings with each building assumed to be at three geographic locations spanning a range of climatic conditions. Numerous design options and operating strategies are evaluated and two economic criteria are used to measure economic performance. In general the results show that fuel cell OS/IES's are competitive in most regions of the country if the OS/IES is properly designed. The preferred design is grid connected, makes effective use of the fuel cell's thermal output, and has a fuel cell powerplant sized for the building's base electrical load.

Septins coordinate cell wall integrity and lipid metabolism in a sphingolipid-dependent process

ABSTRACT Septins colocalize with membrane sterol-rich regions and facilitate recruitment of cell wall synthases during wall remodeling. We show that null mutants missing an Aspergillus nidulans core septin present in hexamers and octamers (ΔaspAcdc11, ΔaspBcdc3 or ΔaspCcdc12) are sensitive to multiple cell wall-disturbing agents that activate the cell wall integrity MAPK pathway. The null mutant missing the octamer-exclusive core septin (ΔaspDcdc10) showed similar sensitivity, but only to a single cell wall-disturbing agent and the null mutant missing the noncore septin (ΔaspE) showed only very mild sensitivity to a different single agent. Core septin mutants showed changes in wall polysaccharide composition and chitin synthase localization. Mutants missing any of the five septins resisted ergosterol-disrupting agents. Hexamer mutants showed increased sensitivity to sphingolipid-disrupting agents. Core septins mislocalized after treatment with sphingolipid-disrupting agents, but not after ergosterol-disrupting agents. Our data suggest that the core septins are involved in cell wall integrity signaling, that all five septins are involved in monitoring ergosterol metabolism, that the hexamer septins are required for sphingolipid metabolism and that septins require sphingolipids to coordinate the cell wall integrity response.

Heat recovery subsystem and overall system integration of fuel cell on-site integrated energy systems

The best HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) subsystem to interface with the Engelhard fuel cell system for application in commercial buildings was determined. To accomplish this objective, the effects of several system and site specific parameters on the economic feasibility of fuel cell/HVAC systems were investigated. An energy flow diagram of a fuel cell/HVAC system is shown. The fuel cell system provides electricity for an electric water chiller and for domestic electric needs. Supplemental electricity is purchased from the utility if needed. An excess of electricity generated by the fuel cell system can be sold to the utility. The fuel cell system also provides thermal energy which can be used for absorption cooling, space heating and domestic hot water. Thermal storage can be incorporated into the system. Thermal energy is also provided by an auxiliary boiler if needed to supplement the fuel cell system output. Fuel cell/HVAC systems were analyzed with the TRACE computer program.

Cell-Type-Specific Proteomics Analysis of a Small Number of Plant Cells by Integrating Laser Capture Microdissection with a Nanodroplet Sample Processing Platform

Plant organs and tissues contain multiple cell types, which are well organized in 3-dimensional structure to efficiently perform physiological functions such as homeostasis, response to environmental perturbation, pathogen infection. It is critically important to perform molecular measurements at the cell-type-specific level to discover mechanisms and unique features of cell populations that govern differentiation and respond to external perturbations. Although mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been demonstrated as an enabling discovery tool to study plant physiology, conventional approaches require millions of cells to generate robust biological conclusions. Such requirements mask the cell-to-cell heterogeneities and limit the comprehensive profiling of plant proteins at spatially resolved and cell-type-specific resolutions. This protocol describes a recently-developed proteomics workflow for studying a small number of plant cells by integrating laser capture microdissection, microfluidic nanodroplet-based sample preparation, with ultrasensitive liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Using poplar as a model tree species, we provide detailed protocols, including plant tissue harvest, tissue preparation, cryosectioning, laser microdissection, protein digestion, mass spectrometry measurement, and data analysis. We show the workflow enables the precise identification and quantification of thousands of proteins from hundreds of isolated plant root and leaf cells.
