Subcell Coupling in Tandem Solar Cells: Measurements and Modeling

Closely stacking two or more photovoltaic (PV) subcells together to form tandem solar cells inevitably results in subcell coupling that is important to understand. Here we describe how this coupling can be modeled and characterized for two-, three-, and four-terminal tandems (hereafter 2T, 3T or 4T).

Evaluating the effect of ionomer chemical composition in silver-ionomer catalyst inks toward the oxygen evolution reaction by half-cell measurements and water electrolysis

The effect of anion exchange ionomer (AEI) chemistry on the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was systematically studied in both half-cell and single-cell electrolysis experiments. OER was studied in 1 M K 2 CO 3 at 50°C using an array of ionomer-silver catalyst inks deposited on Ni foam. Different ionomer modifications were investigated to optimize the OER performance. The AEI used in this work features a block copolymer backbone of polychloromethylstyrene-b-polycyclooctene-b-polychloromethylstyrene which was functionalized with either benzyltrimethylammonium (TMA) or benzylmethylpiperidinium (MPRD) quaternary ammonium cations. Here, using an MPRD quaternary ammonium cation shifted the rate determining step at high overpotentials, ultimately providing enhanced performance. Increasing the catalyst ink dilution was also found to substantially improve mass activity and catalyst utilization (increase from 35 to 88 A g –1 Ag), likely by reducing the ionomer thickness and decreasing transport resistances. In the final ionomer modification, the Ni foam substrate was leveraged to partially hydrogenate the polycyclooctene midblock to be polyethylene-like at the Ni interface. A significant increase in the electrochemical surface area (Cdl increased from 8.8 to 20.8 mF cm –2 ) and performance (by 47 mA cm –2 or 29 A g –1 Ag) was observed with the incorporation of polyethylene. Kinetic results from half-cell experiments were validated via single-cell anion exchange membrane electrolysis experiments, where the optimized electrode displayed enhanced performance in both 1 M K 2 CO 3 and DI H 2 O.

Single-cell measurement of plasmid copy number and promoter activity

Abstract Accurate measurements of promoter activities are crucial for predictably building genetic systems. Here we report a method to simultaneously count plasmid DNA, RNA transcripts, and protein expression in single living bacteria. From these data, the activity of a promoter in units of RNAP/s can be inferred. This work facilitates the reporting of promoters in absolute units, the variability in their activity across a population, and their quantitative toll on cellular resources, all of which provide critical insights for cellular engineering.

Improved Primary Reference Cell Calibrations for Higher Accuracy Photovoltaic Cell and Module Performance Measurements

The adoption of photovoltaic (PV) modules for clean electricity relies on accurate measurements of their performance, which are essential for estimating their energy production potential. Herein, the calibration chain of PV cells and modules, with particular emphasis on primary reference cell calibrations, is discussed. Also, herein, the direct sunlight method the group has developed for these calibrations is presented and critical improvements and upgrades that lead to calibration uncertainty as low as 0.45% are discussed. The ultimate motivation behind this work is to provide low‐uncertainty performance measurements of PV modules, and lowering the calibration uncertainty of primary reference cells is a key first step toward achieving this goal. As the use of solar electricity continues to grow, the demand for primary reference cell calibrations inevitably increases beyond what the small handful of primary calibration laboratories can provide today. Therefore, this work can serve as a useful guide for implementing primary PV reference cell calibrations using the outdoor method, as well as outlining the critical elements required to make these calibrations highly accurate.

Optimizing Oil Production in Oleaginous Yeast by Cell-Wide Measurements and Genome-Based Models (Final Report)

The work funded under this DOE genomics grant focused on characterizing, modifying and developing genetic engineering tools for the then very promising but under-characterized oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. To-date, all biodiesel production facilities rely on vegetable oils and animal fats as feedstocks, which are very limited. Nature, on the other hand, is very well equipped for making carbohydrates, which are very plentiful throughout the world and rather well distributed in various forms. While numerous (biochemical and thermochemical) technologies exist presently for carbohydrate conversion to alcohols, there is none available for the cost-efficient production of lipids from carbohydrate feedstocks. Such a technology would have wide-ranging implications in land use, renewable resource utilization and production of transportation fuels with minimal carbon footprint. The global research objectives of this award were to develop tools for cell-wide measurement of metabolites and lipids that, along with transcriptional data, will allow the construction of genome-scale metabolic models, as well as models of transcriptional regulation, that will guide the further metabolic engineering of Yarrowia lipolytica. To achieve these goals, a very strong international and diverse team consisting of research groups at MIT, UCLA, PNNL and Chalmers University was put together, whose specific goals, achievements and breakthroughs are included in this report.

Microsecond Carrier Lifetimes in Polycrystalline CdSeTe Heterostructures and in CdSeTe Thin Film Solar Cells

We report significant advances in understanding and reducing nonradiative Shockley-Read-Hall recombination in polycrystalline CdSe x Te 1-x , leading to microsecond charge carrier lifetimes. In undoped Al 2 O 3 -passivated heterostructures we find external radiative efficiency 0.2%, quasi-Fermi level splitting 950 mV, mobility 100 cm 2 /(Vs), and diffusion length 14 µm. In solar cells measured lifetimes can exceed 1 µs. We interpret this data to indicate MgZnO/CdSeTe interface recombination velocity <; 100 cm/s. Based on our results, it appears CdTe PV technology has potentially overcome longstanding “recombination lifetime” limitation and in the near future will transition to improving other aspects of device design.

Cell-specific measurements show nitrogen fixation by particle-attached putative non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Abstract Biological nitrogen fixation is a major important source of nitrogen for low-nutrient surface oceanic waters. Nitrogen-fixing (diazotrophic) cyanobacteria are believed to be the primary contributors to this process, but the contribution of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophic organisms in oxygenated surface water, while hypothesized to be important, has yet to be demonstrated. In this study, we used simultaneous 15 N-dinitrogen and 13 C-bicarbonate incubations combined with nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis to screen tens of thousands of mostly particle-associated, cell-like regions of interest collected from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. These dual isotope incubations allow us to distinguish between non-cyanobacterial and cyanobacterial nitrogen-fixing microorganisms and to measure putative cell-specific nitrogen fixation rates. With this approach, we detect nitrogen fixation by putative non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the oxygenated surface ocean, which are associated with organic-rich particles (<210 µm size fraction) at two out of seven locations sampled. When present, up to 4.1% of the analyzed particles contain at least one active putative non-cyanobacterial diazotroph. The putative non-cyanobacterial diazotroph nitrogen fixation rates (0.76 ± 1.60 fmol N cell −1 d −1 ) suggest that these organisms are capable of fixing dinitrogen in oxygenated surface water, at least when attached to particles, and may contribute to oceanic nitrogen fixation.

Challenges in spatial metabolomics and proteomics for functional tissue unit and single-cell resolution

While transcriptomics is the most broadly applied technology for global spatial and single cell measurements in healthy and diseased tissues. Transcripts are often used as a proxy for protein and even metabolite measurements, but it has become commonly accepted that extrapolating this kind of information is a poor proxy and not a substitute for direct measurement. Within the last decade advanced developments of mass spectrometry-based assays have made these direct measurements not only possible, but routine. Where mass spectrometry has become an enabling technology, and various methods can now detect hundreds of metabolites and thousands of proteins from samples. Not only can this be performed within bulk measurements, but much effort has been directed into translating these measurements to single cells and tissues at cellular resolution. The information obtained from mass spectrometry is now able to trace metabolic events and decipher feedback loops across anatomical regions, connecting genetic and metabolic networks that define phenotypes. Herein, we will broadly overview developments in the field over the past decade, leading into several case studies which highlight the direct measurement of metabolites, proteins, and proteoforms from thinly sliced tissues. Much of this work is feasible due to multidisciplinary team science, and we offer brief perspective on paths forward and the challenges that persist with adoption and application of spatial omics.

Application of the Solute-Solvent EMF Cell to Measure Activity of NiF 2 in Molten FLiNaK

Electromotive force (emf) measurements made using a combination of solute- and solvent-based electrodes were used to determine the activity of NiF 2 in molten FLiNaK eutectic at 823 K across a concentration range of x NiF2 = 5.2 × 10 –4 –1.0 × 10 –2 . The solute emf values were measured using electrodes consisting of Ni wires immersed in FLiNaK with dissolved NiF 2 contained in graphite crucibles. The measured emf values were then converted to the FLiNaK Eutectic Potassium Electrode (FEKE) potential and used to quantify the activity of dissolved NiF 2 . This quantification was based upon comparative measurements of a reference solvent electrode consisting of a K-Bi alloy immersed in pure FLiNaK contained in a boron nitride crucible and a solute electrode. Short cell lives were characteristic of the measurements due to the corrosive nature of the fluoride salts. Quantifying the activity of NiF 2 will improve the utility of Ni 2+ /Ni reference electrodes in molten fluoride salts, which are notoriously difficult electrolytes to work with because of their reactivity. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the general nature of the solute-solvent approach as a repeatable, easily employed method for measuring the activity values of electroactive species in a variety of molten salts to improve understanding of the electroactive species behavior in these systems.

Voltage-Based Strategies for Preventing Battery Degradation under Diverse Fast-Charging Conditions

Maintaining safe operating conditions is a key challenge for high-performance lithium-ion battery applications. The lithium-plating reaction remains a risk during charging, but limited studies consider the highly variable charging conditions possible in commercial cells. Here we combine pseudo-2D electrochemical modeling with data visualization methods to reveal important relationships between the measurable cell voltage and difficult-to-predict Li-plating onset criteria. An extensively validated model is used to compute Li plating for thousands of multistep charging conditions spanning diverse rates, temperatures, states-of-charge, and cell aging. Here we observe an empirical cell operating voltage limit below which plating does not occur across all conditions, and this limit varies with the battery state-of-charge and aging. A model sensitivity analysis also indicates that, when comparing two charging voltage profiles, the capacity difference at 4.0 V correlates well with the difference in the plating onset capacity. These results encourage simple strategies for Li-plating prevention that are complementary to existing battery controls.

MEOP based 3 He polarization and injection system for experiments below 1 K

Metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) is a widely used technique for producing polarized 3 He. In connection with an experiment to search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) we have built a MEOP based 3 He polarization and injection system to prepare 80 % polarized 3 He at room temperature which will be injected into a ∼ 400 mK measurement cell filled with superfluid 4 He. We describe the polarization and injection system, which is designed to allow for final concentrations of 10 -8 –10 -10 of 80% polarized 3 He in the superfluid filled measurement cell. Only ≈ 0.72% polarization loss due to gradients is expected during injection.

Apparatuses and methods for testing electrochemical cells by measuring frequency response

Real-time battery impedance spectra are acquired by stimulating a battery or battery system with a signal generated as a sum of sine signals at related frequencies. An impedance measurement device can be used to interface between the battery system and a host computer for generating the signals. The impedance measurement device may be calibrated to adapt the response signal to more closely match other impedance measurement techniques. The impedance measurement device may be adapted to operate at mid-range voltages of about 50 volts and high-range voltages up to about 300 volts.

Employing Fracture Statistics to Track Cell Reliability Through Module Fabrication

In this work we demonstrate how fracture statistics may be employed to track cell reliability through module fabrication steps. We were able to detect how cell cutting equipment could reduce cell fracture strain by 25 % as well as increase its variability. A smaller reduction was found to result from the ribbon soldering operation, and all cells measured were weaker when strained in an orientation perpendicular to the gridlines. Cell fracture measurements were found to be consistent with the number of cracked cells experienced in full sized modules exposed to mechanical loading. A structural mechanics model was created to elucidate how the requisite fracture strain is developed in a cell encapsulated within a PV module and demonstrates that this strain decreases more than 50 % from its center to edge when placed within the inner loading span of four-point flexure. The associated implications on the apparent cell strength is examined with an effective volume treatment.

Microwave Flow Cytometric Detection and Differentiation of Escherichia coli

Label-free measurement and analysis of single bacterial cells are essential for food safety monitoring and microbial disease diagnosis. We report a microwave flow cytometric sensor with a microstrip sensing device with reduced channel height for bacterial cell measurement. Escherichia coli B and Escherichia coli K-12 were measured with the sensor at frequencies between 500 MHz and 8 GHz. The results show microwave properties of E. coli cells are frequency-dependent. A LightGBM model was developed to classify cell types at a high accuracy of 0.96 at 1 GHz. Thus, the sensor provides a promising label-free method to rapidly detect and differentiate bacterial cells. Nevertheless, the method needs to be further developed by comprehensively measuring different types of cells and demonstrating accurate cell classification with improved machine-learning techniques.

Measurements of Six-Junction Concentrator Solar Cells

Accurate measurements of six-junction inverted metamorphic concentrator solar cells under AM1.5 direct spectrum are obtained by adjusting the spectrum of a tunable high-intensity solar simulator with custom mirrors. Isotype reference cells and broadband InGaAs QE calibration cells were developed for accurate measurements. Modeling and varying the illumination show that an unavoidable 15% - 17% overillumination on the sixth junction does not result in significant error of these 6J IMM devices. Spectrally adjusted flash measurements are independently confirmed by NREL's Cell and Module Performance team. Concentration measurements of a 6J IMM solar cell resulted in 47.1 ± 3.2% (absolute) efficiency at 143 suns.

Modeling Reference Cell Performance Using Measured and Modeled Spectral Data

The performance of several silicon-based reference cells is examined under clear skies on a horizontal and two-axis tracking surface during the winter of 2022. The ratio of the calculated reference cell output to the measured reference cell output is examined. For each reference cell, when using the measured spectral data, the ratio of the estimated to measured output varies by less than +/-0.6% at the P95 level. The analysis was also done using modeled spectral values obtained from the Bird spectrl2 model. The ratio between the estimated reference cell output using the modeled spectral values to the measured reference cell output varies by +/-1.1% at the P95 level.
