Dynamical coupled-channel models for hadron dynamics

Dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) approaches parametrize the interactions and dynamics of two and more hadrons and their response to different electroweak probes. The inclusion of unitarity, three-body channels, and other properties from scattering theory allows for a reliable extraction of resonance spectra and their properties from data. Here, we review the formalism and application of the ANL-Osaka, the Juelich-Bonn-Washington, and other DCC approaches in the context of light baryon resonances from meson, (virtual) photon, and neutrino-induced reactions, as well as production reactions, strange baryons, light mesons, heavy meson systems, exotics, and baryon-baryon interactions. Finally, we also provide a connection of the formalism to study finite-volume spectra obtained in Lattice QCD, and review applications involving modern statistical and machine learning tools.

Unified description of the coupled-channels and statistical Hauser-Feshbach nuclear reaction theories for low energy neutron incident reactions

We incorporate the coupled-channels optical model into the statistical Hauser-Feshbach nuclear reaction theory, where the scattering matrix is diagonalized by performing the Engelbrecht-Weidenmüller transformation. This technique has been implemented in the coupled-channels optical model code ECIS by J. Raynal, and we extend this method so that all the open channels in a nucleon-induced reaction on a deformed nucleus can be calculated consistently.

Unitary coupled-channel three-body amplitude with pions and kaons

Three-body dynamics above threshold is required for the reliable extraction of many amplitudes and resonances from experiment and lattice QCD. The S-matrix principle of unitarity can be used to construct dynamical coupled-channel approaches in which three particles scatter off each other, rearranging two-body subsystems by particle exchange. This paper reports the development of a three-body coupled-channel, amplitude including pions and kaons. The unequal-mass amplitude contains two-body S- and P-wave subsystems (“isobars”) of all isospins, 𝐼 = 0,1/2,1,3/2,2 , and it also allows for transitions within a given isobar. The 𝑓 0 ⁡(500)⁢(𝜎),𝑓 0 ⁡(980),𝜌⁡(700),𝐾$^{*}_{0}$⁡(700)⁢(𝜅), and 𝐾*⁡(892) resonances are included, apart from repulsive isobars. Different methods to evaluate the amplitude for physical momenta are discussed. Production amplitudes for 𝑎 1 quantum numbers are shown as a proof of principle for the numerical implementation.

Lattice phase shifts and mixing angles for an arbitrary number of coupled channels

We present a lattice method for determining scattering phase shifts and mixing angles for the case of an arbitrary number of coupled channels. The proposed method combines a spherical wall boundary condition and a channel-mixing auxiliary potential to extract the full-rank S-matrix from the radial wave functions. We consider the scattering problem of two spin-1 bosons interacting with a test potential involving up to four coupled channels. For this benchmark system, the phase shifts and mixing angles are shown to agree on the lattice and in the continuum. Our method should allow to extend previous two-channel nuclear lattice EFT simulations to mixing of more than two partial waves.

Toward extracting scattering phase shift from integrated correlation functions. III. Coupled channels

The formalism developed in the preceding papers that connects integrated correlation function of a trapped two-particle system to infinite volume scattering phase shift is further extended to coupled-channel systems in the present work. Using a trapped nonrelativistic two-channel system as an example, a new relation is derived that retains the same structure as in the single channel, and has explicit dependence on the phase shifts in both channels but not on the inelasticity. The relation is illustrated by a exactly solvable coupled-channel quantum mechanical model with contact interactions. It is further validated by path integral Monte Carlo simulation of a quasi-one-dimensional model that can admit general interaction potentials. In all cases, we found rapid convergence to the infinite volume limit as the trap size is increased, even at short times, making it potentially a good candidate to overcome signal-to-noise issues in Monte Carlo applications. Light baryon resonances from a coupled-channel study including $$\mathbf {K\Sigma }$$ photoproduction

The Jülich-Bonn dynamical coupled-channel approach is extended to include KΣ photoproduction off the proton. Differential cross section and (double) polarization data for K + Σ 0 and K 0 Σ + are analysed simultaneously with the pion- and photon-induced production of πN, ηN, KΛ, and KΣ final states, totaling almost 72,000 data points for center-of-mass energies W<2.4 GeV. Based on the fit results the spectrum of N * and Δ resonances is extracted in terms of pole positions and residues. We discuss the impact of the γp→KΣ channels in detail and investigate the influence of recent polarization data for ηp photoproduction.

Constraining the $\overline{K}$N coupled channel dynamics using femtoscopic correlations at the LHC

The interaction of K – with protons is characterised by the presence of several coupled channels, systems like $\overline{K}$ 0 n and πΣ with a similar mass and the same quantum numbers as the K – p state. The strengths of these couplings to the K – p system are of crucial importance for the understanding of the nature of the Λ(1405) resonance and of the attractive K – p strong interaction. In this article, we present measurements of the K – p correlation functions in relative momentum space obtained in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 Te, in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 Te, and (semi)peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 Te. The emitting source size, composed of a core radius anchored to the K + p correlation and of a resonance halo specific to each particle pair, varies between 1 and 2 fm in these collision systems. The strength and the effects of the $\overline{K}$ 0 n and πΣ inelastic channels on the measured K – p correlation function are investigated in the different colliding systems by comparing the data with state-of-the-art models of chiral potentials. A novel approach to determine the conversion weights ω, necessary to quantify the amount of produced inelastic channels in the correlation function, is presented. In this method, particle yields are estimated from thermal model predictions, and their kinematic distribution from blast-wave fits to measured data. The comparison of chiral potentials to the measured K – p interaction indicates that, while the πΣ –K – p dynamics is well reproduced by the model, the coupling to the $\overline{K}$ 0 n channel in the model is currently underestimated.

Scalar and Tensor Charmonium Resonances in Coupled-Channel Scattering from Lattice QCD

We determine J P C = 0 + + and 2 + + hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in the charmonium energy region up to 4100 MeV using lattice QCD, a first-principles approach to QCD. Working at m π ≈ 391 MeV , more than 200 finite-volume energy levels are computed and these are used in extensions of the Lüscher formalism to determine infinite-volume coupled-channel scattering amplitudes. We find that this energy region contains a single χ c 0 and a single χ c 2 resonance. Both are found as pole singularities on the closest unphysical Riemann sheet, just below 4000 MeV with widths around 70 MeV. The largest couplings are to kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channels in S -wave, and couplings to several decay channels consisting of pairs of open-charm mesons are found to be large and significant in both cases. Above the ground state χ c 0 , no other scalar bound states or near- D D ¯ threshold resonances are found, in contrast to several theoretical and experimental studies. Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Full‐dimensional coupled‐channel statistical approach to atom‐triatom systems and applications to H/D + O 3 reaction

Abstract The statistical quantum model (SQM), which assumes that the reactivity is controlled by entrance/exit channel quantum capture probabilities, is well suited for chemical reactions with a long‐lived intermediate complex. In this work, a time‐independent coupled‐channel implementation of the SQM approach is developed for atom‐triatom systems in full dimensionality. As SQM treats the capture dynamics quantum mechanically, it is capable of handling quantum effects such as tunneling. A detailed study of the H/D + O 3 capture dynamics was performed by applying the newly developed SQM method on an accurate global potential energy surface. Agreement with previous ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) results on the same potential energy surface is excellent except for very low temperatures. The SQM results are also in reasonably good agreement with available experimental rate coefficients. The strong H/D kinetic isotope effect underscores the dominant role of quantum tunneling under an entrance channel barrier at low temperatures.

Coupled-channels analysis of pion and η electroproduction within the Jülich-Bonn-Washington model

Pion and η electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channels model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel η electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.

Coupled-channel J − − meson resonances from lattice QCD

We extend an earlier calculation within lattice QCD of excited light meson resonances with J P C = 1 − − , 2 − − , 3 − − at the S U ( 3 ) flavor point in the representation, by considering the representation. In this case the resonances appear in coupled-channel amplitudes, which we determine, establishing the relative strength of pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar to pseudoscalar-vector decays. Combining the new octet results with the prior results for the singlet, we perform a plausible extrapolation to the physical quark mass, and compare to experimental ρ J ⋆ , K J ⋆ , ω J ⋆ and ϕ J ⋆ resonances. Inclusion of $K\Lambda $ electroproduction data in a coupled channel analysis

Exclusive electroproduction reactions provide an access to the structure of excited baryons. To extract electroproduction multipoles encoding this information, the Julich-Bonn-Washington (JBW) analysis framework is extended to the analysis of differential cross sections in KΛ electroproduction. Here this update enlarges the scope of previous coupled-channel analyses of pions and eta mesons, with photoproduction reactions as boundary condition in all analyzed electroproduction reactions. Polarization observables are predicted and compared to recent CLAS data. The comparison shows the relevance of these data to pin down baryon properties.

Coupled-channel approach to isotensor π π π scattering from lattice QCD

The quest to understand three-body dynamics from first-principle QCD includes the study of nonresonant and resonant systems. The isospin I = 2 system is of particular interest having no three-body resonance but featuring a resonance in a subchannel, while also being a coupled-channel problem. In this study, we calculate the finite-volume spectrum from lattice QCD at two different pion masses, map the amplitude to the infinite volume through a generalized Finite-Volume Unitarity three-body quantization condition, investigate the limit of a narrow ρ , and compare with an effective Lagrangian prediction at leading order. Chiral extrapolations between different pion masses are performed.

Coupled-Channel Analysis of the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) Line Shape with BESIII Data

The effects of the coupled channels and the off-shell D * 0 are included in the parametrization of the line shape. The line shape mass parameter is obtained to be M X = ( 3871.63 ± 0.1 3 − 0.05 + 0.06 ) MeV . Two poles are found on the first and second Riemann sheets corresponding to the D * 0 D ¯ 0 branch cut. The pole location on the first sheet is much closer to the D * 0 D ¯ 0 threshold than the other, and is determined to be 7.04 ± 0.1 5 − 0.08 + 0.07 MeV above the D 0 D ¯ 0 π 0 threshold with an imaginary part − 0.19 ± 0.0 8 − 0.19 + 0.14 MeV . Enabling complete multichannel nonadiabatic dynamics: A global representation of the two-channel coupled, 1,2 1 A and 1 3 A states of NH 3 using neural networks

Global coupled three-state two-channel potential energy and property/interaction (dipole and spin–orbit coupling) surfaces for the dissociation of NH 3 (Ã) into NH + H 2 and NH 2 + H are reported. The permutational invariant polynomial-neural network approach is used to simultaneously fit and diabatize the electronic Hamiltonian by fitting the energies, energy gradients, and derivative couplings of the two coupled lowest-lying singlet states as well as fitting the energy and energy gradients of the lowest-lying triplet state. The key issue in fitting property matrix elements in the diabatic basis is that the diabatic surfaces must be smooth, that is, the diabatization must remove spikes in the original adiabatic property surfaces attributable to the switch of electronic wavefunctions at the conical intersection seam. Here, we employ the fit potential energy matrix to transform properties in the adiabatic representation to a quasi-diabatic representation and remove the discontinuity near the conical intersection seam. The property matrix elements can then be fit with smooth neural network functions. The coupled potential energy surfaces along with the dipole and spin–orbit coupling surfaces will enable more accurate and complete treatment of optical transitions, as well as nonadiabatic internal conversion and intersystem crossing.

Hyperon III: $$K^{-}p - \pi \varSigma $$ coupled-channel dynamics in the $$\varLambda (1405)$$ mass region

Abstract Low-energy data on the three charge states in $$\gamma p \rightarrow K^+(\varSigma \pi )$$ γ p → K + ( Σ π ) from CLAS at JLab, on $$K^-p\rightarrow \pi ^0\pi ^0\varLambda $$ K - p → π 0 π 0 Λ and $$\pi ^0\pi ^0\varSigma $$ π 0 π 0 Σ from the Crystal Ball at BNL, bubble chamber data on $$K^-p\rightarrow \pi ^-\pi ^+\pi ^{\pm }\varSigma ^{\mp }$$ K - p → π - π + π ± Σ ∓ , low-energy total cross sections on $$K^-$$ K - induced reactions, and data on the $$K^-p$$ K - p atom are fitted with the BnGa partial-wave-analysis program. We find that the data can be fitted well with just one isoscalar spin-1/2 negative-parity pole, the $$\varLambda (1405)$$ Λ ( 1405 ) , and background contributions. In a fit with one isocsalar state, the $$\varLambda (1405)$$ Λ ( 1405 ) structure can be determined as a dominantly SU(3) singlet state. A fit with two isoscalar singlet states, with imposed properties of the low-mass state, is, however, also not incompatible with data.
