Universal signatures of Dirac fermions in entanglement and charge fluctuations

We study the entanglement entropy (EE) and charge fluctuations in models where the low-energy physics is governed by massless Dirac fermions. We focus on the response to flux insertion which, for the EE, is widely assumed to be universal, i.e., independent of the microscopic details. We provide an analytical derivation of the EE and charge fluctuations for the seminal example of graphene, using the dimensional reduction of its tight-binding model to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our asymptotic expression for the EE matches the conformal field theory prediction. We show that the charge variance has the same asymptotic behavior, up to a constant prefactor. To check the validity of universality arguments, we numerically consider several models, with different geometries and numbers of Dirac cones, and either for strictly two-dimensional models or for a gapless surface mode of three-dimensional topological insulators. We also show that the flux response does not depend on the entangling surface geometry as long as it encloses the flux. Finally we consider the universal corner contributions to the EE. We show that in the presence of corners, the Kitaev-Preskill subtraction scheme provides nonuniversal, geometry-dependent results.

Gauge invariance and color charge fluctuations

The nature of confinement is connected with color charge. Unfortunately, the color charge densities in QCD, the Noether charge densities associated with the global color invariance, are not invariant under local color rotations. This implies that the expectation values of the net color charge in any region of any physical state in QCD—states that satisfy the color Gauss law—are automatically zero for all components of color. In this Letter, it is shown that the expectation value of the square of the net color charge in a region—a measure of the color charge fluctuations—is necessarily nonzero when evaluated in physical states and the result, while depending on the scheme and scale by which the theory is regulated, is gauge invariant. This holds despite the formal lack of gauge invariance of the operator. Moreover, there is a particular combination of the color charge fluctuations for the vacuum and for a system describable by a nontrivial density matrix that is independent that has a well-defined continuum limit.

Indications for Freeze-Out of Charge Fluctuations in the Quark-Gluon Plasma at the LHC

The D-measure of net-charge fluctuations quantifies the variance of net charge in strongly interacting matter. It was introduced over 20 years ago as a potential signal of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in heavy-ion collisions, where it is expected to be suppressed due to the fractional electric charges of quarks. Measurements have been performed at RHIC and LHC, but the conclusion has been elusive in the absence of quantitative calculations for both scenarios. We address this issue by employing a recently developed formalism of density correlations and incorporate resonance decays, local charge conservation, and experimental kinematic cuts. We find that the hadron gas scenario is in fair agreement with the ALICE data for $\sqrt{{𝑠}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb–Pb collisions only when a very short rapidity range of local charge conservation is enforced, while the QGP scenario is in excellent agreement with experimental data and largely insensitive to the range of local charge conservation. A Bayesian analysis of the data utilizing different priors yields moderate evidence for the freeze-out of charge fluctuations in the QGP phase relative to hadron gas. The upcoming high-fidelity measurements from LHC Run 2 will serve as a precision test of the two scenarios.

Multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in central Ar+Sc interactions at 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

This paper presents results on multiplicity fluctuations of positively and negatively charged hadrons as well as net-electric charge fluctuations measured in central Ar+Sc interactions at beam momenta 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c. The fluctuation analysis is one of the tools to search for the predicted critical point of strongly interacting matter. Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified using cumulant ratios. In most instances, multiplicity and net-charge distributions appear narrower than the corresponding Poisson or Skellam distributions. Cumulant ratios are compared with the EPOS1.99 model predictions, which provide a qualitative description that aligns with observations for positively and negatively charged particles. The obtained results are also compared to earlier NA61/SHINE results from inelastic p+p interactions in the same analysis acceptance.

Ferromagnetism out of charge fluctuation of strongly correlated electrons in κ -(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br

We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie–Weiss law with a positive Curie–Weiss temperature, and a particular M∝ $\sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-order that forms a dipole-liquid, we construct a model of antiferromagnetically interacting spin chains in two adjacent charge-ordered domains, which are coupled via fluctuating charges on a Mott-dimer at the boundary. We find that the charge fluctuations can draw a weak ferromagnetic moment out of the spin singlet domains.

Charge conservation and higher moments of charge fluctuations

Higher moments of distributions of net charge and baryon number in heavy-ion collisions have been proposed as signals of fundamental QCD phase transitions. In order to better understand background processes for these observables, models are presented which enable one to gauge the effects of local charge conservation, decays of resonances and clusters, Bose symmetrization, and volume fluctuations. Monte Carlo methods for generating samplings of particles consistent with local charge conservation are presented and are followed by a review of simple analytic models involving a single type of charge with a constant experimental efficiency. The main model consists of thermal emission superimposed onto a simple parametrization of collective flow, known as a blast wave, with emission being consistent with individual canonical ensembles. The spatial extent of local charge conservation is parameterized by the size and extent over which charge is conserved. Here, the sensitivity of third- and fourth-order moments, skewness and kurtosis, to these parameters, and to beam energy and baryon density is explored. Comparisons with STAR data show that a significant part of the observed non-Poissonian fluctuations in net-proton fluctuations are explained by charge and baryon-number conservation, but that measurements of the STAR collaboration for fluctuations of net electric charge significantly differ from expectations of the models presented here.

Revisiting superconductivity in the extended one-band Hubbard model: Pairing via spin and charge fluctuations

The leading superconducting instabilities of the two-dimensional extended repulsive one-band Hubbard model within spin-fluctuation pairing theory depend sensitively on electron density, band, and interaction parameters. We map out the phase diagrams within a random-phase-approximation spin- and charge-fluctuation approach, and find that while B 1g (d x 2 –y 2 ) and B 2g (d xy ) pairing dominates in the absence of repulsive longer-range Coulomb interactions V NN , the latter induces pairing in other symmetry channels, including, e.g., A 2g (g-wave), nodal A 1g (extended s-wave), or nodal E u (p-wave) spin-triplet superconductivity. At the lowest temperatures, transition boundaries in the phase diagrams between symmetry-distinct spin-singlet orders generate complex time-reversal symmetry broken superpositions. By contrast, we find that boundaries between singlet and triplet regions are characterized by first-order transitions. Finally, motivated by recent photoemission experiments, we have determined the influence of an additional explicitly attractive nearest-neighbor interaction, V NN < 0, on the superconducting gap structure. Furthermore, depending on the electronic filling, such an attraction boosts E u (p-wave) spin-triplet or B 1g (d x 2 –y 2 ) spin-singlet ordering.

Electronic signatures of Lorentzian dynamics and charge fluctuations in lithiated graphite structures

Lithium graphite intercalation compounds (Li-GICs) are essential materials for modern day portable electronics and obtaining insights into their atomic structure and thermodynamics is of fundamental interest. Here we explore the electronic and atomic states of Li-GICs at varying degrees of Lithium loading (i.e., “staging”) by means of ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations and simulated X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS). We analyze the atomic correlation functions and shows that the enhancements of the Li-ion entropy with increased staging result from Lorentzian lithium-ion dynamics and charge fluctuations, which activate low-energy phonon modes. The associated electronic signatures are modulations of the unoccupied π*/σ* orbital energy levels and unambiguous fingerprints in Carbon K-edge XAS spectra. Thus, we extend the canonical view of XAS, establishing that these “static” measurements in fact encode the signature of the thermodynamic response and relaxation dynamics of the system. This causal link between atomic structure, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and information theory can be generally exploited to better understand stability in solid-state electrochemical systems.

An infrared on-shell action and its implications for soft charge fluctuations in asymptotically flat spacetimes

We study the infrared on-shell action of Einstein gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes (AFSs), obtaining an effective, gauge-invariant boundary action for memory and shockwave spacetimes. We show that the phase space is in both cases parameterized by the leading soft variables in AFSs, thereby extending the equivalence between shockwave and soft commutators to spacetimes with non-vanishing Bondi mass. We then demonstrate that our on-shell action is equal to three quantities studied separately in the literature: (i) the soft supertranslation charge; (ii) the shockwave effective action, or equivalently the modular Hamiltonian; and (iii) the soft effective action. Finally, we compute the quantum fluctuations in the soft supertranslation charge and, assuming the supertranslation parameter may be promoted to an operator, we obtain an area law, consistent with earlier results showing that the modular Hamiltonian has such fluctuations.

Searching for the QCD Critical Point Along the Pseudo-critical/Freeze-out Line Using Padé-resummed Taylor Expansions of Cumulants of Conserved Charge Fluctuations

Using high-statistics datasets generated in (2+1)-flavor QCD calculations at finite temperature we construct estimators for the radius of convergence from an eighth order series expansion of the pressure as well as the number density. We show that the estimator for pressure and number density will be identical in the asymptotic limit. In the vicinity of the pseudo-critical temperature, T pc ≃ 156.5 MeV, we find the estimator of the radius of convergence to be µ B /T ≳ 3 for strangeness-neutral matter. We also present results for the pole structure of the Pad´e approximants for the pressure at non-zero values of the baryon chemical potential and show that the pole structure of the [4,4] Pad´e is consistent with not having a critical point at temperatures larger than 135 MeV and a baryon chemical potential smaller than µ B /T ~ 2.5.

Coherent emission from surface Josephson plasmons in striped cuprates

The interplay between charge order and superconductivity remains one of the central themes of research in quantum materials. In the case of cuprates, the coupling between striped charge fluctuations and local electromagnetic fields is especially important, as it affects transport properties, coherence, and dimensionality of superconducting correlations. Here, we study the emission of coherent terahertz radiation in single-layer cuprates of the La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 family, for which this effect is expected to be forbidden by symmetry. We find that emission vanishes for compounds in which the stripes are quasi-static but is activated when c-axis inversion symmetry is broken by incommensurate or fluctuating charge stripes, such as in La 1.905 Ba 0.095 CuO 4 and in La 1.845 Ba 0.155 CuO 4 . In this case, terahertz radiation is emitted by surface Josephson plasmons, which are generally dark modes, but couple to free space electromagnetic radiation because of the stripe modulation.
