Study of charmonium and charmonium-like contributions in $\mathrm{B}^+$ → $\mathrm{J/ψηK^+}$ decays

A study of B+ → J/ψηK + decays, followed by J/ψ → μ + μ – and η → γγ, is performed using a dataset collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 The J/ψη mass spectrum is investigated for contributions from charmonia and charmonium-like states. Evidence is found for the B + →(ψ2(3823) → J/ψη)K + and B + → (ψ(4040) → J/ψη)K + decays with significance of 3.4 and 4.7 standard deviations, respectively. This constitutes the first evidence for the ψ 2 (3823) → J/ψη decay.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of J PC =1 -- ,(o,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (Φn(r)) in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator ($\bar{c}cg$) between the vacuum and n-th state for J PC , with r being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their r-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that r can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of Y (42600) and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for (0,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids in Xc0,1,2N and J/ψω(φ) final states.

Measurement of Charmonium Production in $p + p$ and $p + d$ Interactions in the Fermilab SeaQuest Experiment

The Fermilab SeaQuest experiment has measured dimuon events from the interactions of 120GeV proton beam on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets with dimuon mass between 2 and 9GeV. These dimuon events contain both the Drell-Yan process and the charmonium ($J/\psi$ and $\psi^\prime$) production. Unlike the Drell-Yan process which probes the antiquark distributions in the nucleons, the charmonium production is sensitive to both quark and gluon distributions. SeaQuest has extracted the $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio as well as the differential cross sections for charmonium production in the kinematic region of $0.4 < x_F < 0.9$. The $\sigma^{pd}/2\sigma^{pp}$ ratio for charmonium production are found to be significantly different from that of the Drell-Yan process. The measured differential cross sections for charmonium production are compared with theoretical calculations using Color Evaporation Model and Non-Relativistic QCD model.

Measurement of 𝐵 meson production fraction ratios in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using open-charm and charmonium decays

Production fraction ratios of 𝐵 + , 𝐵 0 , and 𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$ mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using a special dataset recorded in 2018 with high-rate triggers designed to collect an unbiased sample of 1⁢010 𝑏 hadrons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. These data allow the study of the open-charm decays of 𝐵 mesons (𝐵 (𝑠) → 𝜋⁢𝐷 (𝑠) ) where the 𝐷 meson decays into fully hadronic final states. By utilizing known branching fractions and precise theoretical calculations, production fraction ratios as functions of 𝐵 meson transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) are measured using open-charm decays in the kinematic range of 8 < 𝑝 T < 60 GeV and |𝑦| <2.25. In addition, the same dataset is used to measure the relative production fraction ratios with the charmonium decay channels [𝐵 (𝑠) →𝑋⁢𝐽/𝜓 with 𝑋 indicating a 𝐾 + , 𝐾*(892) 0 , or 𝜙⁡(1020) meson] where the 𝐽/𝜓 meson decays into a pair of muons. The open-charm results are used to normalize the relative production fraction ratios obtained from the charmonium samples. Measurements of the ratios of branching fractions of 𝐵 meson decays to charmonium and open-charm final states are also reported, which will improve the world-average values of these ratios. Finally, we test isospin invariance in 𝐵 meson production in proton-proton collisions and observe that it holds within the experimental precision.

Magnetic field induced hair structure in the charmonium gluon dissociation

We study the electromagnetic field effect on charmonium gluon dissociation in quark-gluon plasma. With the effective Hamiltonian derived from QCD multipole expansion under an external electromagnetic field, we first solve the two-body Schrödinger equation for a pair of charm quarks with mean field potentials for color and electromagnetic interactions and obtain the charmonium binding energies and wave functions, and then calculate the gluon dissociation cross section and decay width by taking the color electric and magnetic dipole interactions as perturbations above the mean field and employing Fermi’s golden rule. Considering the charmonium deformation in a magnetic field, the discrete Landau energy levels make the dissociation cross section grow hair, and the electric dipole channel is significantly changed, especially for the P -wave states χ c 0 and χ c ± . From our numerical calculation, the magnetic field strength e B = 5 m π 2 already changes the gluon dissociation strongly, which may indicate measurable effects in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Threshold charmonium photoproduction with GlueX

We report the total and differential cross sections for J/ψ photoproduction obtained using the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer at the 12 GeV JLab accelerator over the full near-threshold kinematic region. The GlueX experiment uses tagged linearly-polarized photon beam from coherent Bremsstrahlung off a thin diamond. Charmonium photoproduction near threshold, under certain assumptions including gluon exchange and factorization, can be used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon GPD, the gravitational form factors, the mass radius of the proton, and the anomalous contribution to the proton mass. In the measured cross sections we find evidence for possible contributions beyond gluon exchange. The results are compared to a wide range of theoretical predictions including GPD calculations and models with open-charm intermediate states. Photoproduction near threshold of charmonium states with opposite-to-photon parity offer another opportunity, complementary to the J/ψ, to understand the reaction mechanism of the charmonium photoproduction. While we see some evidence for such states, comprehensive studies of such higher-mass charmonia can be done only with the proposed JLab energy upgrade. An electron beam energy of up to 22 GeV significantly increases the photon flux and polarization in the corresponding threshold regions allowing for precise cross section and polarization measurements there.

Search for the semi-muonic charmonium decay J/ψ → D−μ+νμ + c.c.

Abstract Using (10087 ± 44) × 10 6 J/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCIIe + e − storage ring at the center-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 3.097 GeV, we present a search for the rare semi-muonic charmonium decayJ/ψ→D − μ + ν μ + c.c.. Since no significant signal is observed, we set an upper limit of the branching fraction to be$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (J/ψ→D − μ + ν μ + c.c.) < 5.6 × 10 −7 at 90% confidence level. This is the first search for the weak decay of charmonium with a muon in the final state.

Search for the double-charmonium state with ηcJ/ψ at Belle

We measure the cross section of e + e - → ηcJ/ψ at the Υ(nS)(n = 1–5) on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of 955 fb -1 . We also search for double charmonium production in e + e - → ηcJ/ψ via initial state radiation near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the e + e - → ηcJ/ψ process is found with a statistical significance greater than 3.3σ near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Shedding light on charmonium

We investigate E1 radiative transitions within charmonium in a relativistic approach based on light-front QCD. In quantum field theory, two sets of processes are pure E1: χ c 0 → J / ψ γ ( ψ → χ c 0 γ ) and h c → η c γ ( η c ′ → h c γ ), both involving the P -wave charmonia. We compute the E1 radiative decay widths as well as the corresponding transition form factors of various processes including those involving 2 P states. These observables provide an access to the microscopic structures of the P -wave charmonium. We show that our parameter-free predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements as well as lattice simulations whenever available. R ( 3780 ) Resonance Interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -Wave Dominant State of Charmonium from Precise Measurements of the Cross Section of e + e − → Hadrons

We report the precise measurements of the cross section of e + e − → hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) . For the first time, we measure the R ( 3810 ) electronic width to be ( 19.4 ± 7.4 ± 12.1 ) eV . For the R ( 3760 ) resonance, we measure the mass to be ( 3751.9 ± 3.8 ± 2.8 ) MeV / c 2 , the total width to be ( 32.8 ± 5.8 ± 8.7 ) MeV , and the electronic width to be ( 184 ± 75 ± 86 ) eV . For the R ( 3780 ) resonance, we measure its mass to be ( 3778.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.3 ) MeV / c 2 , total width to be ( 20.3 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 ) MeV , and electronic width to be ( 265 ± 67 ± 83 ) eV . Forty-seven years ago, the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the ψ ( 3770 ) is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) resonances. Among these, we interpret the R ( 3780 ) is a resonance dominated by the 1 D 1 3 charmonium state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of Charmonium Sequential Suppression in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions. In the 0–80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41±0.10 (stat)±0.03 (syst)±0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) is significantly more suppressed than J/𝜓 in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Study of charmonium decays to K S 0 K π in the B → ( K S 0 K π ) K channels

A study of the B + → $K^0_S$K + K - π + and B + → $K^0_S$K + K + π - decays is performed using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV at the LHCb experiment. The $K^0_S$Kπ invariant mass spectra from both decay modes reveal a rich content of charmonium resonances. New precise measurements of the η c and η c (2S) resonance parameters are performed and branching fraction measurements are obtained for B + decays to η c , J/ψ, η c (2S) and χ c1 resonances. In particular, the first observation and branching fraction measurement of B + → χ c0 K 0 π + is reported as well as first measurements of the B + → K 0 K + K - π + and B + → K 0 K + K - π + branching fractions. Dalitz plot analyses of η c → $K^0_S$Kπ and η c (2S) → $K^0_S$Kπ decays are performed. A new measurement of the amplitude and phase of the Kπ S-wave as functions of the Kπ mass is performed, together with measurements of the $K^*_0$(1430), $K^*_0$(1950) and a 0 (1700) parameters. Measurements of the branching fractions of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( P 1 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events, we investigate four hadronic decay modes of the P -wave charmonium spin-singlet state h c ( 1 P 1 ) → h + h − π 0 / η ( h = π or K ) via the process ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c at BESIII. The h c → π + π − π 0 decay is observed with a significance of 9.6 σ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. Evidences for h c → K + K − π 0 and h c → K + K − η are found with significances of 3.5 σ and 3.3 σ , respectively, after considering the systematic uncertainties. The branching fractions of these decays are measured to be B ( h c → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 1.36 ± 0.16 ± 0.14 ) × 10 − 3 , B ( h c → K + K − π 0 ) = ( 3.26 ± 0.84 ± 0.36 ) × 10 − 4 , and B ( h c → K + K − η ) = ( 3.13 ± 1.08 ± 0.38 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. No significant signal of h c → π + π − η is found, and the upper limit of its decay branching fraction is determined to be B ( h c → π + π − η ) < 4.0 × 10 − 4 at the 90% confidence level. Scalar and Tensor Charmonium Resonances in Coupled-Channel Scattering from Lattice QCD

We determine J P C = 0 + + and 2 + + hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in the charmonium energy region up to 4100 MeV using lattice QCD, a first-principles approach to QCD. Working at m π ≈ 391 MeV , more than 200 finite-volume energy levels are computed and these are used in extensions of the Lüscher formalism to determine infinite-volume coupled-channel scattering amplitudes. We find that this energy region contains a single χ c 0 and a single χ c 2 resonance. Both are found as pole singularities on the closest unphysical Riemann sheet, just below 4000 MeV with widths around 70 MeV. The largest couplings are to kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channels in S -wave, and couplings to several decay channels consisting of pairs of open-charm mesons are found to be large and significant in both cases. Above the ground state χ c 0 , no other scalar bound states or near- D D ¯ threshold resonances are found, in contrast to several theoretical and experimental studies. Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B + → D * ± D ∓ K + Decays

A study of resonant structures in B + → D * + D − K + and B + → D * − D + K + decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of s = 7 , 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D * − D + and D * + D − states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D * ± D ∓ mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D * ± D ∓ : η c ( 3945 ) , h c ( 4000 ) , χ c 1 ( 4010 ) , and h c ( 4300 ) , with quantum numbers J P C equal to 0 − + , 1 + − , 1 + + , and 1 + − , respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T c ¯ s ¯ 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 and T c ¯ s ¯ 1 * ( 2900 ) 0 resonances in the D − K + mass spectrum, already observed in the B + → D + D − K + decay, is confirmed in a different production channel. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Charmonium production in $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5$ GeV

The measurement of charmonium states produced in proton-neon (pNe) collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The pro duction of J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21.7 ± 1.4 nb -1 . The J/ψ and ψ(2S) hadrons are reconstructed in μ + μ - final states. The J/ψ production cross-section per target nucleon in the centre-of mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29, 0] is found to be 506 ± 8 ± 46 nb/nucleon. The ratio of J/ψ and D 0 cross-sections is evaluated to (1.06 ± 0.02 ± 0.09)%. The ψ(2S) to J/ψ relative production rate is found to be (1.67 ± 0.27 ± 0.10)% in good agreement with other measurements involving beam and target nuclei of similar sizes.

Detecting nuclear mass distribution in isobar collisions via charmonium

Abstract The collective properties of final state hadrons produced in the high statistics $$_{44}^{96}$$ 44 96 Ru + $$_{44}^{96}$$ 44 96 Ru and $$_{40}^{96}$$ 40 96 Zr + $$_{40}^{96}$$ 40 96 Zr collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}} = 200~\textrm{GeV}$$ s NN = 200 GeV are found to be significantly different. Such differences were argued to be precise probes of the difference in nucleon distribution in the isobar nuclei. We investigate the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ production in the isobar collision via a relativistic transport approach. By comparing the isobar systems according to equal centrality bin and equal multiplicity bin, we find that the yield ratio of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ is sensitive to the differences in both the number of binary collisions and the medium evolution. Besides, the elliptic flow $$v_2$$ v 2 of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ is qualitatively different from the light hadrons, and the ratio between Ru + Ru and Zr + Zr collisions is sensitive to the medium evolution. The charmonium production provides an independent probe to study the nucleon distribution in the isobar system.
