The lipidomics reporting checklist a framework for transparency of lipidomic experiments and repurposing resource data

The rapid increase in lipidomic studies has led to a collaborative effort within the community to establish standards and criteria for producing, documenting, and disseminating data. Creating a dynamic checklist that condenses key information about lipidomic experiments into common terminology will enhance the field's consistency, comparability, and repeatability. Here, we describe the structure and rationale of the established Lipidomics Minimal Reporting Checklist to increase transparency in lipidomics research.

Preparing Solar Photovoltaic Systems Against Storms. Pre-Storm Solar PV Checklist: Distributed Ground-Mounted Systems

Through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has used subject matter experts to compile a set of checklists to help Puerto Rico and other communities prepare for storms. Renewable energy and distributed energy systems have the potential to provide power to neighborhoods, vulnerable residents, and certain facilities within a community, if those systems are designed to provide power during a grid disruption. The storm-hardening checklists provide storm preparation actions that can increase the chances that solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are available when communities need them most.

Are CO2 batteries ready for the grid? A cross-cutting deployment checklist

Metal-CO2 batteries have attracted considerable research interest in the past decade due to the utilization of the greenhouse CO2 gas. The low cost and abundance of CO2 feedstocks, together with high specific capacity metal anodes, make this technology a promising candidate for electricity-demanding data centers and grids. However, nonstandard data reporting, ambiguous hardware designs, and questionable cycling parameters have emerged as the field has grown. A clear checklist and standardized reporting format for research and development are urgently needed. Here, after carefully re-analyzing 15 Na-CO2 and 9 Li-CO2 studies, we propose a general checklist and a flowchart for CO2 batteries and related gas conversion systems. Specific performance values from a deployment-oriented perspective, based on commercial lithium iron phosphate batteries, are integrated into the list. We frame research and development efforts around grid-relevant outputs, including areal rate and capacity, cyclability, gas utilization, and safety. While illustrated for Na- and Li-CO2 cells, this framework is directly transferable to other CO2 batteries and air/oxygen batteries, helping align benchtop demonstrations with systematic metrics that ultimately govern future deployment.

A Checklist of River Function Indicators for hydropower ecological assessment

Hydropower generation has benefits for societies that seek low-carbon, renewable energy alternatives, but sustainable hydropower production will require an explicit consideration of potential tradeoffs between socioeconomic and environmental priorities. These tradeoffs are typically explored during a formal environmental impact assessment process that can be complex and controversial. The steps taken to address stakeholder concerns through impact hypotheses and field studies are not always transparent. We have designed a Checklist of River Function Indicators to facilitate stakeholder discussions during hydropower licensing and to support more transparent, holistic, and scientifically informed hydropower environmental analyses. Based on a database of environmental metrics collected from hydropower project studies documented by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the International Hydropower Association, the Low Impact Hydropower Institute, and peer-reviewed scientific literature, our proposed Checklist of River Function Indicators contains 51 indicators in six categories. We have tested the usefulness of the Indicators by applying them to seven hydropower projects documented by FERC. Among the case study projects, 44 of the 51 Indicators were assessed according to the FERC documentation. Although each hydropower project presents unique natural resource issues and stakeholder priorities, the proposed Indicators can provide a transparent starting point for stakeholder discussions about which ecological impacts should be considered in hydropower planning and relicensing assessments.
