Direct numerical simulation of a turbulent methane/air flame impinged by a sub-breakdown electric field

Here, the effects of an external electric field on a turbulent methane/air diffusion flame are analyzed in this work using direct numerical simulations. The analyzed configuration consists of a temporally evolving mixing layer of air and a mixture of methane and nitrogen at 1 atm that is impinged by an electric field in the direction normal to the mean mixing plane. The combustion and chemi-ionization reactions involved in the flow are modeled using finite-rate chemistry and a reduced reaction scheme consisting of 26 species and 134 reactions. The mass diffusion and ion-wind effects are modeled using a detailed description of the diffusion coefficients and electric mobilities based on kinetic theory. The presented calculations show that the turbulence generated within the mixing layer is mostly unaffected by the applied electric field for the configuration under exam. In fact, the electric body force is developed away from the mixing region where the flow is uniform. Conversely, the turbulence is able to introduce very high intermittency in the electrically charged species concentration and, consequently, in the electric body force. Such intermittency will constitute a challenge in the future formulation of combustion models that take into account ion-wind effects.

Electronic states and transitions of PrO and PrO + probed by threshold ionization spectroscopy and spin–orbit multiconfiguration perturbation theory

The precise ionization energy of praseodymium oxide (PrO) seeded in supersonic molecular beams is measured with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. Here, a total of 33 spin–orbit (SO) states of PrO and 23 SO states of PrO + are predicted by second-order multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate perturbation (MCQDPT2) theory. Electronic transitions from four low-energy SO levels of the neutral molecule to the ground state of the singly charged cation are identified by combining the MATI spectroscopic measurements with the MCQDPT2 calculations. The precise ionization energy is used to reassess the ionization energies and the reaction enthalpies of the Pr + O → PrO + + e – chemi-ionization reaction reported in the literature. An empirical formula that uses atomic electronic parameters is proposed to predict the ionization energies of lanthanide monoxides, and the empirical calculations match well with available precise experimental measurements.

HTR-1.3 solver: Predicting electrified combustion using the hypersonic task-based research solver

Here this manuscript presents an updated open-source version of the Hypersonics Task-based Research (HTR) solver. The solver, whose main features are presented in Di Renzo et al. (2020) and Di Renzo & Pirozzoli (2021), is designed for direct numerical simulation of reacting flows at high Reynolds numbers. This new version extends the applications of the HTR solver to turbulent combustion in the presence of external electric fields. In particular, a new distributed Poisson solver compatible with heterogeneous architectures has been incorporated in the algorithm to compute the electric potential distribution in bi-periodic configurations. The drift fluxes of the electrically charged species are now included in the transport equations using a targeted essentially non-oscillatory scheme. A verification of these new features of the solver is provided using one-dimensional burner stabilized flames, whereas a three dimensional turbulent flame is utilized to discuss the scalability of the proposed numerical tool.
