The Evolution of the Peridynamics Co-Authorship Network

We report peridynamics is a relatively new field in continuum mechanics that has developed over the past 20 years. This paper studies the evolution of collaborations in the field of peridynamics since its inception using social network analysis. For this purpose, we construct a network for each year from 2000 to 2019 describing co-authorship between scientists in peridynamics. In these networks, each node represents a scientist and each link connects two co-authoring scientists with a link weight representing the frequency and strength of their collaboration; each network as a whole can be thought of as a graph representation of the peridynamics community for the given year. By constructing a network for each year, we are able to analyze the evolution of the network in time and discuss the implications of this evolution for the peridynamics community. Our study demonstrates that the peridynamics community has been growing exponentially in size in recent years. Centrality metrics are also used to identify the most collaborative scientists in the community. Moreover, we compute link recommendations based on both elevating a scientist’s position in the network with respect to certain centrality metrics or closing structural holes in the network identified with persistent homology. We further extend the analysis to higher-order networks whose nodes represent groups of scientists in the community and whose links connect collaborating groups. In some sense, our work studies the past, present, and future of the peridynamics community.

PDnetwork

PDnetwork is an interactive online tool designed to visualize the evolution of the co-authorship network in the field of peridynamics. In this network, each node represents a peridynamics author, and each link represents co-authorship between authors. The tool allows users to obtain collaborative measures for authors using selected network metrics and visualize collaborations for specific authors. Additionally, it provides rankings for authors based on selected collaboration metrics and includes links to the author profiles in the Scopus publication database.

Social Network and Content Analysis of the North American Carbon Program as a Scientific Community of Practice

The North American Carbon Program (NACP) was formed to further the scientific understanding of sources, sinks, and stocks of carbon in Earth's environment. Carbon cycle science integrates multidisciplinary research, providing decision-support information for managing climate and carbon-related change across multiple sectors of society. This investigation uses the conceptual framework of com-munities of practice (CoP) to explore the role that the NACP has played in connecting researchers into a carbon cycle knowledge network, and in enabling them to conduct physical science that includes ideas from social science. A CoP describes the communities formed when people consistently engage in shared communication and activities toward a common passion or learning goal. We apply the CoP model by using keyword analysis of abstracts from scientific publications to analyze the research outputs of the NACP in terms of its knowledge domain. We also construct a co-authorship network from the publications of core NACP members, describe the structure and social pathways within the community. Results of the content analysis indicate that the NACP community of practice has substantially expanded its research on human and social impacts on the carbon cycle, contributing to a better understanding of how human and physical processes interact with one another. Results of the co-authorship social network analysis demonstrate that the NACP has formed a tightly connected community with many social pathways through which knowledge may flow, and that it has also expanded its network of institutions involved in carbon cycle research over the past seven years.

Bibliometric review and recent advances in total scattering pair distribution function analysis: 21 years in retrospect

Global research activities have been driven by the quest to develop and characterize novel materials for technological advancements. The total scattering pair distribution function (TSPDF) is a powerful and versatile characterization technique for examining the structural details of diverse complex materials including liquid, amorphous, disordered crystalline, and nanostructured materials. Thus, it is critical to keep track of research progress, identify research gaps, and future research directions of the application of the TSPDF technique in materials development and discovery. In this work, a bibliometric analysis of literature regarding the TSPDF technique between 2000 and 2021 was conducted using datasets retrieved from the Web of Science database. The research trends based on publication outputs, research subject distribution, co-authorships among institutions, countries/regions, co-citation of referenced sources, and keyword co-occurrence are evaluated and discussed herein. The impact of the TSPDF technique is projected to increase due to its importance in probing emerging functional materials, and the advances in specialized facilities and instrumentation among the scientific communities engaged with it. Finally, current and emerging research hotspots related to TSPDF technique such as catalysis, computer modeling and simulation, pharmaceutics, machine learning, hydrogen storage, battery materials, and layered structured materials are also identified and discussed.
