Clebsch canonization of Lie–Poisson systems

We propose a systematic procedure called the Clebsch canonization for obtaining a canonical Hamiltonian system that is related to a given Lie–Poisson equation via a momentum map. We describe both coordinate and geometric versions of the procedure, the latter apparently for the first time. We also find another momentum map so that the pair of momentum maps constitute a dual pair under a certain condition. The dual pair gives a concrete realization of what is commonly referred to as collectivization of Lie–Poisson systems. It also implies that solving the canonized system by symplectic Runge–Kutta methods yields so-called collective Lie–Poisson integrators that preserve the coadjoint orbits and hence the Casimirs exactly. We give a couple of examples, including the Kida vortex and the heavy top on a movable base with controls, which are Lie–Poisson systems on $\mathfrak{so}$ (2,1)* and ($\mathfrak{se}$ (3) ⋉ $\mathbb{R}^3$)* and, respectively.

Impact of the continuum on the γ decay of the lowest 2 + states in 14 C

The half-life, T 1/2 =14.6(33) fs, of the 7012-keV 2$^{+}_{1}$ state in 14 C was measured in an experiment employing the 9 Be( 6 Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GODDESS setup. The γ decay from the 2$^{+}_{2}$ near-threshold resonance, located 142 keV above the 8176-keV neutron-emission threshold, was also investigated. An upper limit of 4.0 × 10 –5 was established for the γ-decay branching ratio with respect to the neutron-decay channel. The B(E2) transition probabilities for these 2$^{+}_{1}$ and 2$^{+}_{2}$ states were compared to predictions from the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC). Significant modifications of these B(E2) probabilities, with respect to the standard shell model, are expected due to the coupling to the continuum. For calculations using the YSOX interaction, agreement was found for large negative values of V 0 , the coupling constant to the continuum. The central value V 0 = −645 MeV fm 3 results in a retardation by a factor ∼ 3.5 for the 2$^{+}_{1}$ → 0$^{+}_{1}$ transition, and an enhanced probability by a factor ∼ 2.5 for the γ-decay out of the 2$^{+}_{2}$ state. The latter factor reflects the effect of collectivization of the 2$^{+}_{2}$ excitation when the coupling to the continuum is taken into account.

New narrow resonances observed in the unbound nucleus F 15

The structure of the unbound 15 F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14 O beam impinging on a CH 2 target. The analysis of 1 H( 14 O,p) 14 O and 1 H( 14 O,2p) 13 N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2 - resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2 - and 3/2 - resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14 O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of 13 N via the 1 - resonance of 14 O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2 - and 3/2 - resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. Finally, the observed excitation function 1 H( 14 O, p) 14 O and resonance spectrum in 15 F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Near-threshold resonances in C 11 and the B 10 ( p , α ) Be 7 aneutronic reaction

The nucleus 11 C plays an important role in the boron-proton fusion reactor environment as a catalyzer of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be reaction which, by producing a long-lived isotope of 7 Be, poisons the aneutronic fusion process 11 B(p,2α) 4 He. The low-energy cross section of 10 B(p,α) 7 Be depends on the near-threshold states 7/2$^{+}_{1}$, 5/2$^{+}_{2}$, 5/2$^{+}_{3}$ in 11 C whose properties are primarily known from the indirect measurements. Here we investigate the continuum-coupling induced collectivization of these resonances in the shell model embedded in the continuum. We predict a significant enhancement of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be cross section at energies accessible to the laser-driven hot plasma facilities.

Observation of the Exotic Isotope 13 F Located Four Neutrons beyond the Proton Drip Line

A 13 F resonance was observed following a charge-exchange reaction between a fast 13 O beam and a 9 Be target. The resonance was found in the invariant-mass distribution of 3p+ 10 C events and probably corresponds to a 5/2 + excited state. The ground state was also expected to be populated, but was not resolved from the background. The observed level decays via initial proton emissions to both the ground and first 2 + state of 12 O, which subsequently undergo 2p decay. In addition there may also be a significant proton decay branch to the second 2+ level in 12 O. The wavefunction associated with the observed level may be collectivized due to coupling to the continuum as is it located just above the threshold for proton decay to the second $2^{+}_{2}$ state of 12 O.
