U.S. Department of Energy Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) 2025 Prototype Manufacture Awardee: XFlow Energy

Vertical-axis wind turbines offer a compelling path to low-cost, reliable distributed energy that can compete with utility prices for businesses, landowners, and municipalities in rural areas. They generate power by using a main rotor shaft perpendicular to the ground to pick up wind from different directions without a yaw mechanism. However, previous commercialization attempts struggled to account for the unsteady aerodynamics of this design, leading to low power production and/or premature structural failure. To address these challenges, Competitiveness Improvement Project recipient XFlow Energy is building on work completed during three previous CIP funding awards to develop a 30-kW vertical-axis wind turbine that achieves both low costs and high energy output.

2022 Component Innovation Awardee: Pecos Wind Power

Distributed wind energy systems supply electricity for nearby homes and businesses, often in remote and rural regions. Systems capable of capturing energy in areas with low wind speeds make it possible to deploy these clean energy systems in many geographic locations. Pecos Wind Power's 85-kilowatt (kW) horizontal-axis PW85 wind turbine shows potential to reduce the levelized cost of energy by approximately 55% when compared to typical small wind systems while achieving utility-scale capacity factors of more than 40% in areas with lower wind speeds. To maximize cost competitiveness, the Pecos Wind Power turbine needs a blade optimized for low wind speeds. Through its 2022 Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) award, Pecos Wind Power and partner Wetzel Wind Energy Services will model, optimize, fabricate, and validate a 14.5-meter wind turbine blade made specifically for these applications. Three prior CIP awards supported Pecos Wind Power's initial development of the PW85 turbine.

2022 Small Turbine Certification Awardee: Eocycle America Corporation

Eocycle's Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) award will fund certification testing of the company's EOX S-16 25-kW turbine to make sure it meets UL electrical safety standards. In addition to validating the turbine's reliability and anticipated reduced maintenance requirements, UL certification will also boost consumer confidence in the technology, with the potential to increase the market for the entire small-wind industry.

Competitiveness Improvement Project

5G integrated edge computing platform for efficient component monitoring in coal-fired power plants

This project developed a cutting-edge 5G-integrated edge computing framework to enhance operational efficiency and reliability in coal-fired power plants through real-time component monitoring and anomaly detection. The initiative focused on leveraging distributed machine learning, federated learning, and 5G-based dynamic network slicing to support scalable, fault-tolerant monitoring environments to meet the operational requirements in industrial control systems. With a Distributed Edge Computing Service (DECS) orchestration, this project enabled federated learning at edge for condition monitoring and introduced adaptive client selection strategies to minimize communication overhead. Scalable distributed training was achieved using the Horovod framework, thus enhancing performance across edge nodes. In the realm of 5G networking, the project designed and deployed reconfigurable, QoS-aware network slicing tailored for operational technology (OT) environments, integrating software-defined networks to bolster cyber-resilience and enabling dynamic slicing for federated learning workloads. A significant milestone was the development of a virtualized ICS environment with 5G core integration—which allowed elastic and fault tolerant distributed training on real-world datasets such as NASA Bearings, Hydraulic Systems, and TEP. To broaden the impact of the project, a TRL-3 virtualized ICS testbed for research and education was designed. This project engaged several graduate and undergraduate students to conduct research on the cutting-edge technology, and it resulted in one PhD dissertation, one MS thesis, and over 14 peer-reviewed publications. With the support of this project students also participated in national cybersecurity competitions to improve their professional development skills.
