Aging phenomena in the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

The complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with additive noise is a stochastic partial differential equation that describes a remarkably wide range of physical systems which include coupled non-linear oscillators subject to external noise near a Hopf bifurcation instability and spontaneous structure formation in non-equilibrium systems, e.g., in cyclically competing populations or oscillatory chemical reactions. Here, we employ a finite-difference method to numerically solve the noisy complex Ginzburg-Landau equation on a two-dimensional domain with the goal to investigate its non-equilibrium dynamics when the system is quenched into the “defocusing spiral quadrant”. We observe slow coarsening dynamics as oppositely charged topological defects annihilate each other, and characterize the ensuing aging scaling behavior. We conclude that the physical aging features in this system are governed by non-universal aging scaling exponents. We also investigate systems with control parameters residing in the “focusing quadrant”, and identify slow aging kinetics in that regime as well. Finally, we provide heuristic criteria for the existence of slow coarsening dynamics and physical aging behavior in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Measurement and memory in the periodically driven complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

In the present work we illustrate that classical but nonlinear systems may possess features reminiscent of quantum ones, such as memory, upon suitable external perturbation. As our prototypical example, we use the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in its vortex glass regime. Here, we impose an external drive as a perturbation mimicking a quantum measurement protocol, with a given “measurement rate” (the rate of repetition of the drive) and “mixing rate” (characterized by the intensity of the drive). Using a variety of measures, we find that the system may or may not retain its coherence, statistically retrieving its original glass state, depending on the strength and periodicity of the perturbing field. The corresponding parametric regimes and the associated energy cascade mechanisms involving the dynamics of vortex waveforms and domain boundaries are discussed.

An Efficient Numerical Algorithm for Solving Coupled Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Equation for Superconductivity and Elasticity

A decoupled finite element algorithm is developed for simulating the vortex dynamics on an elastic superconductor which couples the time-dependent Ginzburg- Landau equation with the complex-valued superconducting order parameter and the vector-valued magnetic potential, and the elasticity equation. We present an iterative algorithm for the decoupled system arising from the time and spatial discretization using a combination of preconditioner, algebraic multigrid method (AMG) and preconditioned conjugate gradient method (PCG). The iterative algorithm allows us to perform large-scale three-dimensional simulations of mesoscale pattern formation during superconducting phase transitions with arbitrary elastic boundary conditions. Here, the performance and efficiency of the algorithm are numerically verified by several benchmark problems, exhibiting up to two orders of magnitude improvement depending on the scale of discrete system compared to the exact solver.
