Direct ladderization of cyclooctatetraene-containing, processable conjugated ladder polymers from annulated bis-zirconacyclopentadienes

Conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs) are difficult yet captivating synthetic targets due to their fully unsaturated fused backbones. Inherent challenges associated with their synthesis often lead to low yields, structural defects, and insoluble products. Here a new method to form CLPs is demonstrated, utilizing a high-yielding dimerization of annulated zirconacyclopentadienes to form cyclooctatetraene (COT) monomer units. The resulting COT-containing polymers form rapidly in a single ladderization step from the bis-zirconacyclopentadiene precursors and display M n up to 29.7 kg mol -1 . The polymers represent rare examples of CLPs with negatively curved rings, resulting in the observation of unusual properties. The rigid tub-shaped COT units embedded in the backbone imbue the polymers with microporosity, exhibiting BET surface areas up to 555 m 2 g -1 . Additionally, the remarkable solubility of these CLPs in organic solvents enables the fabrication of thin films showcasing high dielectric performance with a discharged energy density as high as 6.54 J cm -3 at 650 MV m -1 .

Robust chain aggregation of low-entropy rigid ladder polymers in solution

Conjugated polymers have been widely investigated where ladder-type conjugated polymers receive more attention due to their rigid backbones and extraordinary properties. However, the understanding of how the rigid conformation of ladder polymers translates to material properties is still limited. Here, we systematically investigated the solution aggregation properties of a carbazole-derived conjugated ladder polymer (LP) and its analogous non-ladder control polymer (CP) via light scattering, neutron scattering, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy characterization techniques, revealing a highly robust, temperature-insensitive aggregation behavior of the LP. The experimental findings were further validated by computational molecular dynamics simulations. Here we found that the peak positions and intensities of the UV spectra of the LP remained constant between 20 °C and 120 °C in chlorobenzene solution. The polymer also showed a stable hydrodynamic radius measured by dynamic light scattering from 20 °C to 70 °C in the chlorobenzene solution. Using small-angle neutron scattering, no Guinier region was reached in the measured q range down to 0.008 Å –1 , even at elevated temperature. In contrast, the non-ladder control polymer CP was fully soluble in the chlorobenzene solvent without the observation of any notable aggregates. The Brownian dynamics simulation showed that during polymer aggregation, the entropy change of the LP was significantly less negative than that of the non-ladder control polymer. These findings revealed the low entropy nature of rigid conjugated ladder polymers and the low entropy penalty for their aggregation, which is promising for highly robust intermolecular interactions at high temperatures. Such a unique thermodynamic feature of rigid ladder polymers can be leveraged in the design and application of next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices that function under unconventional high temperature conditions.

Sequential Doping of Ladder-Type Conjugated Polymers for Thermally Stable n-Type Organic Conductors

Doping of organic semiconductors is a powerful tool to optimize the performance of various organic (opto)electronic and bioelectronic devices. Despite recent advances, the low thermal stability of the electronic properties of doped polymers still represents a significant obstacle to implementing these materials into practical applications. Hence, the development of conducting doped polymers with excellent long-term stability at elevated temperatures is highly desirable. Here, we report on the sequential doping of the ladder-type polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) with a benzimidazole-based dopant (i.e., N-DMBI). By combining electrical, UV–vis/infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, we quantitatively characterized the conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, spin density, and microstructure of the sequentially doped polymer films as a function of the thermal annealing temperature. Importantly, we observed that the electrical conductivity of N-DMBI-doped BBL remains unchanged even after 20 h of heating at 190 °C. This finding is remarkable and of particular interest for organic thermoelectrics.

All‐Polymer Bulk‐Heterojunction Organic Electrochemical Transistors with Balanced Ionic and Electronic Transport

Abstract The rapid development of organic electrochemical transistor (OECTs)‐based circuits brings new opportunities for next‐generation integrated bioelectronics. The all‐polymer bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) offers an attractive, inexpensive alternative to achieve efficient ambipolar OECTs, and building blocks of logic circuits constructed from them, but have not been investigated to date. Here, the first all‐polymer BHJ‐based OECTs are reported, consisting of a blend of new p‐type ladder conjugated polymer and a state‐of‐the‐art n‐type ladder polymer. The whole ladder‐type polymer BHJ also proves that side chains are not necessary for good ion transport. Instead, the polymer nanostructures play a critical role in the ion penetration and transportation and thus in the device performance. It also provides a facile strategy and simplifies the fabrication process, forgoing the need to pattern multiple active layers. In addition, the development of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐like OECTs allows the pursuit of advanced functional logic circuitry, including inverters and NAND gates, as well as for amplifying electrophysiology signals. This work opens a new approach to the design of new materials for OECTs and will contribute to the development of organic heterojunctions for ambipolar OECTs toward high‐performing logic circuits.

Exploring the Origins of Anti-Ambipolarity in BBL Polymer: Links to Redox Chemistry, Electronic Structure, and Structural Dynamics

We examine the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the conjugated ladder-type polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in response to electron transfer. We aim at explaining the origin of the anti-ambipolar behavior behind the observed BBL nonlinear response associated with specific device architectures. To elucidate this point, we use theory and computation based on first principles, including density functional theory optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, time-dependent DFT, and Marcus-theory analysis. Our results reveal that this redox response is not simply monotonic but follows an alternating odd/even pattern in which gap narrowing and reopening occur sequentially before near-gapless behavior emerges at high charging. Converging theoretical evidence in this work demonstrates that bell shaped conductivity in BBL originates in its fundamental electronic structure and supramolecular organization.

Homologous Ladder Cyclohexasilanes

Here, we report the synthesis of five new examples of ladder cyclohexasilanes, possessing up to three consecutive fused rings and differing in relative ring fusion configuration and side chain structure. By coupling a 1,4-dipotassiooligosilyl dianion to a cyclohexasilane, we obtained bi- and tricyclic ladder cyclohexasilanes. Combined experimental and theoretical studies suggested that annulation could favor the cis configuration under kinetic control, while the trans configuration predominates under thermodynamic control. Computational studies show that with each additional ring in the trans-diastereomeric series, the predicted onset of light absorption shifts to longer wavelengths.

Sulfur Conversion to Donor‐Acceptor Ladder Polymer Networks through Mechanochemical Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction

The development of synthetic methods capable of converting elemental sulfur into conjugated porous sulfur‐rich polymers remains a great challenge, although direct utilization of this readily available feedstock can significantly enrich its uses and circumvent environmental problems during sulfur storage. Here, we report herein mechanochemical (MC) nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) that enables sulfur conversion into thianthrene‐bridged porous ladder polymer networks with dense donor‐acceptor (D−A) molecular junctions. We demonstrate that the key lies in the generation of bent thianthrene units through a solid‐state ball‐milling condensation reaction between 1,2‐dihaloarenes and elemental sulfur. We also show that the assembling of D−A structural motifs into porous networks affords efficient visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with water (H 2 O) vapor, in the absence of any additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. Exceptional photoinduced charge separation along with boosted exciton dissociation results in a high‐performance of carbon monoxide (CO) production rate of 306.1 μmol g −1 h −1 with near 100 % CO selectivity, which is accompanied by H 2 O oxidation to O 2 , as confirmed by both experimental and theoretical results. We anticipate this novel MC S N Ar approach will advance processing techniques for direct sulfur utilization and facilitate new possibilities for the synthesis of D−A ladder polymer networks with promising potential in photocatalysis.

Helical Complex Ladder Polymer with Amplification of Asymmetry

Here, we report a Cu–salen helical complex ladder polymer (HLP-Cu) built from covalently fused Cu(Salen) units. Point chirality from enantiopure diamines directs the formation of a rigid, π-conjugated helix. Compared with a planar analogue (LLP-Cu) and the Cu(Salen) monomer, HLP-Cu exhibits up to 5-fold stronger circular dichroism and a maximum dissymmetry factor of 7.4 × 10 –3 . Titration experiments suggest a cooperative amplification of asymmetry arising from extended conjugation and helical geometry during helix formation. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations are employed to support this hypothesis, showing that increasing conjugation length and helical order enhance the rotational strength of contributing excited states via elevated magnetic transition moments and improved alignment of electric and magnetic transition moments. Our findings provide a new polymer platform for designing functional chiral materials with tunable chiroptical and spin-dependent properties.

Manipulation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in conjugated pseudoladder polymer for semiconductivity and solution-processability

The conformational coplanarity and local rigidity of π-conjugated backbones are critical for the semiconducting performance of organic electronic materials. The conformational coplanarity and local rigidity of π-conjugated backbones are critical for the semiconducting performance of organic electronic materials. While fusing the aromatic system into a ladder-type structure effectively enhances these properties, it also often results in poor solution processability and hence limits their transition to device application. To address this challenge, an intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded pseudoladder polymer (HPLP) system based on alternating hydrogen bond donating benzobisimidazole (BBI) and hydrogen bond accepting benzodifuran (BDF) units, is designed and synthesized. A Boc-protected precursor of HPLP allows for feasible solution processing of the polymer into thin films. Subsequently, in situ thermal Boc-deprotection generates the HPLP polymer, in which intramolecular hydrogen bonds form between each pair of neighboring repeating units, inducing coplanarity and rigidity throughout the entire backbone. This process is accompanied by a significant red-shift of the absorption spectrum, reduced bandgap, and enhanced rigidity, as confirmed by NMR, UV-Vis, and density functional theory analyses. HPLP films exhibit a three-order-of-magnitude enhancement in charge carrier mobility compared to the Boc-protected precursor and demonstrate excellent solvent resistance in organic thin-film transistors.

Foldable semi-ladder polymers: novel aggregation behavior and high-performance solution-processed organic light-emitting transistors

A critical issue in developing high-performance organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) is to balance the trade-off between charge transport and light emission in a semiconducting material. Although traditional materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) or organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have shown modest performance in OLET devices, design strategies towards high-performance OLET materials and the crucial structure–performance relationship remain unclear. Our research effort in developing cross-conjugated weak acceptor-weak donor copolymers for luminescent properties lead us to an unintentional discovery that these copolymers form coiled foldamers with intramolecular H-aggregation, leading to their exceptional OLET properties. An impressive external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.9% in solution-processed multi-layer OLET devices was achieved.
