Measurements of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratios Using Quasi-Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

Neutron-induced fission cross-section ratio measurements were carried out at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) over multiple experiment campaigns from 2021-2023. The total beam time for these measurements across all the experimental campaigns was approximately three weeks. This work was intended to serve as an independent validation of the fissionTPC cross-section ratio measurements. In contrast to the white spectrum neutron source and time-projection chamber utilized in the fissionTPC, these measurements utilized pulsed, quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams and fission ionization chambers. Therefore, this work has different sources of systematic error and can be used as a complementary measurement. In this report we describe our fission cross-section ratio measurements, analysis, results and provide a detailed uncertainty budget.

Neutron-induced capture-to-fission cross section ratio measured at LANSCE

Capture-to-fission cross section ratios are used as an alternative to absolute cross section measurements. This is due to the simplification on the calculations and the reduction of the uncertainties with respect to an absolute measurement of the cross section by eliminating experimental complications like self-absorption, beam/target overlap and non-uniformities. Different capture-to-fission reactions have been measured through the years at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) using the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) combined with different fission detectors. Some of these are a Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) to detect fission fragments (FF), and the NEUtron detector array at DANCE (NEUANCE) to detect fission neutrons. As DANCE detects the γ-rays produced in capture and fission reactions, the fission instrument placed inside the DANCE cavity is used to tag the fission γ-rays for background identification and subtraction. Some examples of capture-to-fission ratio measurements performed with DANCE in the last years are the 233 U, 235 U and 239 Pu. The measurement technique, the different setups, and other potential applications of the instruments will be explained.

Novel cross section ratios as possible signals of saturation in ultraperipheral collisions

We propose new cross section ratios in ultraperipheral A + A and p + A collisions (UPCs) as a potential experimental signal of saturation physics. We consider the ratio R 1 of elastic vector meson photoproduction cross section to the inclusive hadron or jet photoproduction cross section. The ratio can be measured in the γ + A and γ + p collisions taking place in the UPCs. We label the ratios R 1 ( A ) and R 1 ( p ) , respectively. Constructing the double ratio R UPC ( A ) = R 1 ( A ) / R 1 ( p ) , and performing a small- x calculation both in the quasiclassical approximation and by including small- x evolution, we observe that R UPC ( A ) exhibits a markedly different dependence on the nuclear atomic number inside and outside the saturation region. This result indicates that R UPC ( A ) and R 1 ( A ) measurements in UPCs may help in the experimental searches for the evidence of saturation physics. Measurements of jet cross-section ratios in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with ATLAS

Measurements of jet cross-section ratios between inclusive bins of jet multiplicity are performed in 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions with √s = 13 TeV center-of-mass energy, recorded with the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. These ratios are constructed from double-differential cross-section measurements that are made in bins of jet multiplicity and other observables that are sensitive the energy scale and angular distribution of radiation due to the strong interaction in the final state. Additionally, the scalar sum of the two leading jets’ transverse momenta is measured triple differentially, in bins of the third jet’s transverse momentum and of jet multiplicity. These measurements are unfolded to account for acceptance and detector-related effects. The measured distributions are used to construct ratios of the inclusive jet-multiplicity bins, which have been shown to be sensitive to the strong coupling Formula Presented while being less sensitive than other observables to systematic uncertainties and parton distribution functions. The measured distributions are compared with state-of-the-art QCD calculations, including next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions for two- and three-jet events. These predictions are generally found to model the data well and perform best in bins with a modest requirement on the third jet’s transverse momentum. Significant differences between data and Monte Carlo predictions are observed in events with large rapidity gaps and invariant masses of the leading jet pair. Studies leading to reduced jet energy scale uncertainties significantly improve the precision of this work and are documented herein.

Measurements of the 238 U/ 235 U and 239 Pu/ 235 U Fission Cross-Section Ratios Using Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

A quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam was used to measure the neutron-induced fission cross-section ratios for 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) (Table 1) and 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) (Table 2). These results are plotted in comparison with data from the fissionTPC and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in Figs.1-3. For each cross section ratio, the total, systematic, and statistical uncertainties are listed, along with the total beamtime required.

Excitation functions and isomeric cross-section ratios of (d,xn) reactions on 86 Sr

Excitation functions of the 86 Sr(d,n) 87m,87g Y, 86 Sr(d,2n) 86m,86g Y and 86 Sr(d,3n) 85m,85g Y reactions on enriched 86 Sr target were measured by the activation technique up to deuteron energies of 49 MeV. The isomeric cross-section ratios as a function of projectile energy were deduced from the measured data for 87m Y, 87g Y(cum), 86m Y, 86g Y(cum), 85m Y and 85g Y pairs for the same energy range. All measurements are reported for the first time. The experimental data were compared with the data from the TENDL library which is based on TALYS calculation with default parameters. No satisfactory agreement was observed. Nuclear model calculations were then performed using the codes TALYS and EMPIRE with some parameter adjustments, and compared with the experimental data. The quality of the agreement between experimental data and model calculations was numerically quantified. In general, the data as well as the isomeric cross-section ratios are partially reproduced by the model calculations, provided the input model parameters are properly chosen and the level structure of the product nucleus is thoughtfully considered.

Inclusive and differential measurements of the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\mathcal{γ}$ cross section and the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\mathcal{γ}/\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ cross section ratio in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of top quark pair $(\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}})$ production in association with a photon (γ) are performed as a function of lepton, photon, top quark, and $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ kinematic observables, using data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector. Events containing two leptons (electrons or muons) and a photon in the final state are considered. The fiducial cross section of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ is measured to be 137 ± 8 fb, in a phase space including events with a high momentum, isolated photon. The fiducial cross section of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ is also measured to be 56 ± 5 fb when considering only events where the photon is emitted in the production part of the process. Both measurements are in agreement with the theoretical predictions, of 126 ± 19 fb and 57 ± 5 fb, respectively. Differential measurements are performed at the particle and parton levels. Additionally, inclusive and differential ratios between the cross sections of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ and $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ production are measured. The inclusive ratio is found to be 0.0133 ± 0.0005, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 0.0127 ± 0.0008. The top quark charge asymmetry in $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ production is also measured to be −0.012 ± 0.042, compatible with both the standard model prediction and with no asymmetry.

Multi-Differential Semi-Inclusive Charged-Current Muon Neutrino Cross Sections on Helium-4 in MINERvA and the Helium-to-CH Target Cross Section Ratio

A comprehensive international effort has been underway to elucidate the properties and behaviors of neutrinos. A major source of systematic uncertainties in studying neutrino-induced interactions comes from neutrino-nucleus cross-section models, highlighting the need for more precise statistical measurements. MINERvA, an on-axis neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was established to produce neutrino cross-section measurements with many different nuclei. The helium target is the lightest nucleus to be measured by MINERvA. Using the NuMI medium energy muon neutrino data set, we present preliminary results and summarize the extraction of the charged current (CC) muon neutrino - helium-4 semi-inclusive ($\nu_{\mu}$+$^{4}\textrm{He}$$\rightarrow$$\mu^{-}$+N$\pi$+M$\textit{p}$) multi-differential cross-section extraction as a function of transverse ($P_{T}$) and longitudinal ($P_{L}$) muon momentum with respect to the neutrino beamline. We define the final state topology as CC-N$\pi$M$\textit{p}$, with at least two reconstructed tracks: a muon and a combination of N protons and M pions, where $N + M > 0$. To probe the dependence on the size of the nucleus in neutrino-induced interaction phenomena we present a differential cross-section ratio of helium-4 to MINERvA's hydrocarbon target (\textrm{CH}) as a function of transverse muon momentum.

Remeasurement of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratio with the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber Using Vapor-deposited Targets

The NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) has been used to measure the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) cross-section ratio for neutron-induced fission in the range of 0.1–100 MeV, with high precision. A white neutron source was provided by the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the experiment was conducted as a remeasurement to evaluate a roughly 2% discrepancy of the previous fissionTPC results with ENDF/B-VIII.0. Further, a detailed accounting of measurement uncertainties was performed, based on the fissionTPC's novel ability to provide three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles. Current results obtained using a vapor-deposited, highly uniform 239 Pu target, in comparison to the measurement published in 2021, where a 239 Pu electroplated target was used, are presented and discussed. The remeasurement presented here is in agreement with the previous fissionTPC result within measurement uncertainties.

Measurements of ϒ states production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV with STAR: Cross sections, ratios, and multiplicity dependence

We report measurements of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =500 GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity ℒ int = 13 pb −1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for 𝑝 T < 10 GeV/c and |𝑦| < 1. The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (CGC+NRQCD) model overestimates the data, particularly at low 𝑝 T . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by PYTHIA 8.

Conformal geometry from entanglement

In a physical system with conformal symmetry, observables depend on cross-ratios, measures of distance invariant under global conformal transformations (conformal geometry for short). We identify a quantum information-theoretic mechanism by which the conformal geometry emerges at the gapless edge of a 2+1D quantum many-body system with a bulk energy gap. We introduce a novel pair of information-theoretic quantities (\mathfrak{c}_{\textrm{tot}}, \eta) ( 𝔠 tot , η ) that can be defined locally on the edge from the wavefunction of the many-body system, without prior knowledge of any distance measure. We posit that, for a topological groundstate, the quantity \mathfrak{c}_{\textrm{tot}} 𝔠 tot is stationary under arbitrary variations of the quantum state, and study the logical consequences. We show that stationarity, modulo an entanglement-based assumption about the bulk, implies (i) \mathfrak{c}_{\textrm{tot}} 𝔠 tot is a non-negative constant that can be interpreted as the total central charge of the edge theory. (ii) \eta η is a cross-ratio, obeying the full set of mathematical consistency rules, which further indicates the existence of a distance measure of the edge with global conformal invariance. Thus, the conformal geometry emerges from a simple assumption on groundstate entanglement. We show that stationarity of \mathfrak{c}_{\textrm{tot}} 𝔠 tot is equivalent to a vector fixed-point equation involving \eta η , making our assumption locally checkable. We also derive similar results for 1+1D systems under a suitable set of assumptions.

Measurement of the inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV

Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 and 13 TeV. Electron and muon decay modes (ℓ = e or μ) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 ± 6 pb$^{−1}$ at 5.02 TeV and 206 ± 5 pb$^{−1}$ at 13 TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02 TeV are σ(pp → W + X)$ \mathcal{B} $(W → ℓν) = 7300 ± 10 (stat) ± 60 (syst) ± 140 (lumi) pb, and σ(pp → Z+X)$ \mathcal{B} $(Z → ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$) = 669 ± 2 (stat) ± 6 (syst) ± 13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60–120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13 TeV are 20480 ± 10 (stat) ± 170 (syst) ± 470 (lumi) pb and 1952 ± 4 (stat) ± 18 (syst) ± 45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W$^{+}$ and W$^{−}$ production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13 TeV are reported.

Embedding space approach to Lorentzian CFT amplitudes and causal spherical functions

Conformal field theory in a Minkowski setting is discussed in an embedding space approach, paying special attention to causality constraints for four-point amplitudes. The physics of dilatation and Lorentz boost is emphasized in specifying the noncompact maximal Abelian subgroup of S O ( d , 2 ) . Reduction of a conformal field theory four-point amplitudes as functions of cross ratios is shown to be equivalent to enforcing H bi-invariance, i.e., F ( h g h ′ ) = F ( g ) , with g ∈ S O ( d , 2 ) and H an appropriate subgroup. Causality is imposed by introducing appropriate semigroups. Causal zonal spherical functions are constructed, making contact with Minkowski conformal blocks introduced previously. Conformal duality of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation: Theory and applications to parameter estimation

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) in one spatial dimension has stationary solutions similar to those of the linear Schrödinger equation (LSE) as well as more exotic solutions such as solitary waves and quantum droplets. Here, we present a newly discovered conformal duality which unifies the stationary and time-dependent traveling-wave solutions of the one-dimensional cubic-quintic NLSE, the cubic NLSE and LSE. Any two systems that are classified by the same single number called the cross ratio are related by this symmetry. Notably, the conformal duality can also be adapted in Newtonian mechanics and serves as a powerful tool for investigating physical systems that otherwise cannot be directly accessed in experiments. Further, we show that the conformal symmetry is a valuable resource to substantially improve NLSE parameter estimation from noisy empirical data by introducing an optimization afterburner. The new method therefore has far reaching practical applications for nonlinear physical systems. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurements of the inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections and their ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV

Measurements are presented of the W and Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. Data collected in 2022 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.01 fb −1 with one or two identified muons in the final state are analyzed. The results for the products of total inclusive cross sections and branching fractions for muonic decays of W and Z bosons are 11.93 ± 0.08 (syst) ± 0.17 (lumi) $^{+0.07}_{−0.07}$ (acceptance) nb for W + boson production, 8.86 ± 0.06 (syst) ± 0.12 (lumi) $^{+0.05}_{−0.06}$ (acceptance) nb for W − boson production, and 2.021 ± 0.009 (syst) ± 0.028 (lumi) $^{+0.011}_{−0.013}$ (acceptance) nb for the Z boson production in the dimuon mass range of 60–120 GeV, all with negligible statistical uncertainties. Furthermore, the corresponding fiducial cross sections, as well as cross section ratios for both fiducial and total phase space, are provided. The ratios include charge-separated results for W boson production (W + and W − ) and the sum of the two contributions (W ± ), each relative to the measured Z boson production cross section. Additionally, the ratio of the measured cross sections for W + and W − boson production is reported. All measurements are in agreement with theoretical predictions, calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Measurement of vector boson production cross sections and their ratios using pp collisions at s = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Fiducial and total W± and Z boson cross sections, their ratios and the ratio of top-antitop-quark pair and W-boson fiducial cross sections are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13.6 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 fb−1 of data collected in 2022 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured fiducial cross-section values for W+→ℓ+ν, W−→ℓ−ν¯, and Z→ℓ+ℓ− (ℓ=e or μ) boson productions are 4250±150 pb, 3310±120 pb, and 744±20 pb, respectively, where the uncertainty is the total uncertainty, including that arising from the luminosity of about 2.2%. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in αs, next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and next-to-leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Measurement of the energy-differential 35 Cl( n, p 0 ) 35 S cross section via the ratio with 6 Li( n, α ) 3 H

Knowledge of the neutron-induced 35 Cl ⁢(n, x) cross sections is vital to the design and certification of molten chloride fast reactors (MCFRs) since the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) 35 S reaction is believed to be a significant reactor poison. However, recently published measurements are inconsistent with each other and with evaluation. Here, the goal of this work is to measure the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section using a technique that is different from recent measurements. The experiment was conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) 88-Inch Cyclotron using thick target deuteron breakup from a 14 MeV deuteron beam. Energy-differential 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) 35 S cross sections were obtained via ratio with the 6 Li (n, a)⁢ 3 H reaction using an active target experiment with a Cs 2 ⁢LiYCl 6 (CLYC) scintillator. The 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section was measured from 2.02 to 7.46 MeV. The results are consistent with Kuvin et al., confirming a roughly 50% reduction in magnitude relative to the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation. These data provide new insight into the role of natural Cl as an MCFR poison. The reduction of the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section compared to evaluation suggests that MCFR criticality is less sensitive to Cl enrichment. This may in turn reduce building and operating costs since isotope separation may not be needed.

Final SeaQuest Results on the Flavor Asymmetry of the Proton Light-Quark Sea with Proton-Induced Drell-Yan Process

The Fermilab E906/SeaQuest collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process using 120 GeV proton beams bombarding liquid hydrogen and liquid deuterium targets. A combined analysis of all collected data was performed to obtain the final results for the 𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑑 /2⁢𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑝 Drell-Yan cross section ratio covering the kinematic region of 0.13 < 𝑥 <0.45. The 𝑥 dependencies of $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are extracted from these cross section ratios. It is found that $\bar{d}$(𝑥) is greater than $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) over the entire measured 𝑥 range, with improved statistical accuracy compared to previous measurements. The new results on $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are compared to various parton distribution functions and theoretical calculations.
