Separation of Kondo lattice coherence from crystal electric field in CeIn 3 with Nd substitutions

The Ce m M n In 3m+2n (m=1,2;n=0,1) family has been one of the most studied families of heavy fermion compounds. This family has revealed many interesting low-temperature physics phenomena, like quantum critical points, heavy fermion superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior, when these materials are exposed to pressure, magnetic fields, and/or chemical substitution. In this work, we provide a thorough investigation of the Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 phase diagram through single crystal synthesis, x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. Previous electrical resistivity measurements on CeIn 3 reveal a broad maximum, T max ~50 K, which has been associated with the Kondo lattice coherence crossover and/or the crystal electric field depopulation effect as the 4f electrons condense from the high-energy quartet down to the ground state doublet. Our findings show that in the most disordered substitution region, x=0.4–0.5, these features disjoin to reveal two distinct broad humps in electrical resistivity measurements. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity data on Ce 1-x Nd x In 3 also reveal the antiferromagnetic ordering competition between CeIn 3 and NdIn 3 , where the T N of CeIn 3 is linearly suppressed to a critical concentration of x Nd ~0.6. This concentration is slightly lower than what was previously reported in nonmagnetically substituted Ce 1-x La x In 3 . Our magnetic susceptibility measurements and subsequent simulations show that in the CeIn 3 antiferromagnetic regime, x Nd ≤0.4, the Nd ions act as free paramagnets. The large magnitude of the associated paramagnetic response then masks the overlapping antiferromagnetic ordering signature of the Ce ions. Overall our study further sheds light on the underlying crystal electric field and Kondo lattice coherence interactions within the Ce m M n In 3m+2n family and could stimulate further studies of these systems via neutron diffraction or under applied pressure.

PyCrystalField : software for calculation, analysis and fitting of crystal electric field Hamiltonians

PyCrystalField is a Python software package for calculating single-ion crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonians. This software can calculate a CEF Hamiltonian ab initio from a point charge model for any transition or rare earth ion in either the J basis or the LS basis, perform symmetry analysis to identify nonzero CEF parameters, calculate the energy spectrum and observables such as neutron spectrum and magnetization, and fit CEF Hamiltonians to any experimental data. Here, the theory, implementation and examples of its use are discussed.

Quantifying uncertainties in crystal electric field Hamiltonian fits to neutron data

We systematically examine uncertainties from fitting rare earth single-ion crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonians to inelastic neutron scattering data. Using pyrochlore and delafossite structures as test cases, we find that uncertainty in CEF parameters can be large despite visually excellent fits. These results show Yb ^{3+} 3 + compounds have particularly large g g -tensor uncertainty because of the few available peaks. In such cases, additional constraints are necessary for meaningful fits.

Mesoscale interplay between phonons and crystal electric field excitations in quantum spin liquid candidate CsYbSe 2

In this report CsYbSe 2 , a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon coupling resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space. Additionally, an unexpected resonant Raman excitation condition is satisfied, yielding up to third-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optically accessible CEF-phonon manifolds and mesoscale engineering of CEF-phonon interactions.

Spin fluctuations, absence of magnetic order, and crystal electric field studies in the Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnet Rb 3 ⁢Yb⁢(VO 4 ) 2

Here, we report a comprehensive experimental investigation of the structural, thermodynamic, static, and dynamic properties of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet Rb 3 ⁢Yb(VO 4 ) 2 . Through the analysis of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat, complemented by crystal electric field (CEF) calculations, we confirm the Kramers' doublet with effective spin 𝐽 eff = 1/2 ground state. Magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization analysis reveal a weak antiferromagnetic interaction among the 𝐽 eff = 1/2 spins, characterized by a small Curie-Weiss temperature (𝜃$^{\textrm{LT}}_{\textrm{CW}}$ ≃−0.26 K) or a reduced exchange coupling (𝐽/𝑘 B ≃ 0.18 K). The 51 V NMR spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/𝑇 1 ) show no evidence of magnetic long-range-order down to 1.6 K but reflect strong influence of CEF excitations in the intermediate temperatures. At low temperatures, 1/𝑇 1 ⁡(𝑇) shows pronounced frequency dependence and 1/𝑇 1 vs field at different temperatures follows the scaling behavior, highlighting the role of paramagnetic fluctuations. The CEF calculations using the point charge approximation divulge a large energy gap ( ∼18.61 meV) between the lowest and second lowest energy doublets, further establishing Kramers' doublet as the ground state. Our calculations also reproduce the experimental magnetization and specific heat data and indicate an in-plane magnetic anisotropy. These findings position Rb 3⁢ Yb(VO 4 ) 2 as an ideal candidate to explore intrinsic quantum fluctuations and possible quantum spin-liquid physics in a Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

Controlling crystal-electric field levels through symmetry-breaking uniaxial pressure in a cubic super heavy fermion

Abstract YbPtBi is one of the heavy-fermion systems with largest Sommerfeld coefficient γ and is thus classified as a ‘super’-heavy fermion material. In this work, we resolve the long-debated question about the hierarchy of relevant energy scales, such as crystal-electric field (CEF) levels, Kondo and magnetic ordering temperature, in YbPtBi. Through measurements of the a.c. elastocaloric effect and generic symmetry arguments, we identify an elastic level splitting that is unambiguously associated with the symmetry-allowed splitting of a quartet CEF level. This quartet, which we identify to be the first excited state at Δ/ k B ≈ 1.6 K above the doublet ground state at ambient pressure, is well below the proposed Kondo temperature T K ≈ 10 K. Consequently, this analysis of the energy scheme can provide support models that predict that the heavy electron mass is a result of an enhanced degeneracy of the CEF ground state, i.e., a quasi-sextet in YbPtBi. At the same time, our study shows the potential of the a.c. elastocaloric effect to control and quantify strain-induced changes of the CEF schemes, opening a different route to disentangle the CEF energy scales from other relevant energy scales in correlated quantum materials.

Synthesis and characterization of the novel breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2⁢ Zn 5⁢ O 11

In this study, a novel material from the rare-earth based breathing pyrochlore family, Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 , was successfully synthesized. Powder x-ray diffraction and high-resolution powder neutron diffraction confirmed phase purity and the $F\bar4$3⁢𝑚 breathing pyrochlore crystal structure, while thermogravimetric analysis revealed incongruent melting behavior compared to its counterpart, Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2⁢ Zn 5⁢ O 11 . High-quality single crystals of Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 were grown using the traveling solvent floating zone technique and assessed using Laue x-ray diffraction and single crystal x-ray diffraction. Further, thermodynamic characterization indicated paramagnetic behavior down to 0.05 K, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements identified distinct dispersionless crystal electric field energy bands, with the fitted crystal electric field model predicting a single-ion singlet ground state and an energy gap of ∼9 meV separating it from the first excited (singlet) state. Additional low-energy excitation studies on single crystals revealed dispersionless bands at 0.8 and 1 meV. Computed phonon dispersions from first-principles calculations ruled out phonons as the origin of these modes, further illustrating the puzzling and unique properties of Ba 3 ⁢Tm⁢ 2 Zn 5 ⁢O 11 .

Crystal-field states and defect levels in candidate quantum spin ice Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7

Here, we report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of nonmagnetic Ce 4+ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground-state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electric field parameters obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with bulk magnetic susceptibility data down to about 1 K. Below this temperature, the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a correlated regime without showing any sign of magnetic long-range order or freezing down to 0.08 K. We conclude that Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 is another candidate to investigate exotic correlated states of quantum matter, such as the octupolar quantum spin ice recently argued to exist in the isostructural compounds Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 and Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .

High-pressure synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland-lattice oxides BaL n 2 ZnO 5 (L n = Pr, Sm, Eu)

BaPr 2 ZnO 5 , BaSm 2 ZnO 5 , and BaEu 2 ZnO 5 – a series of 4f magnetic insulators comprising the Shastry-Sutherland lattice – were synthesized via a solid-state reaction under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The magnetic behaviors are well characterized by the localized 4f electrons of each Ln 3+ (= Pr, Sm, Eu) under the influence of the crystal-electric field of the surrounding ions. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements of BaPr 2 ZnO 5 (Pr 3+ ; 4f 2 3 H 4 ) indicate the splitting of the ground state J-multiplet due to the crystal-electric field. BaSm 2 ZnO 5 (Sm 3+ ; 4f 5 6 H 5/2 ) is a strong Van Vleck paramagnet, while BaEu 2 ZnO 5 is non-magnetic due to the 7 F 0 ground state (Eu 3+ ; 4f 6 7 F 0 ). The series of new oxides enriches a group of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice materials and helps to develop a range of two-dimensional quantum materials.

CrysFieldExplorer : rapid optimization of the crystal field Hamiltonian

A new approach to the fast optimization of crystal electric field (CEF) parameters to fit experimental data is presented. This approach is implemented in a lightweight Python-based program, CrysFieldExplorer. The main novelty of the method is the development of a unique loss function, referred to as the spectrum characteristic loss (L Spectrum ), which is based on the characteristic polynomial of the Hamiltonian matrix. Particle swarm optimization and a covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy are used to find the minimum of the total loss function. It is demonstrated that CrysFieldExplorer can perform direct fitting of CEF parameters to any experimental data such as a neutron spectrum, susceptibility or magnetization measurements etc. CrysFieldExplorer can handle a large number of non-zero CEF parameters and reveal multiple local and global minimum solutions. Crystal field theory, the loss function, and the implementation and limitations of the program are discussed within the context of two examples.

Spin-orbital order and excitons in magnetoresistive HoBi

The magnetism of the rocksalt fcc rare-earth monopnictide HoBi, a candidate topological material with extreme magnetoresistance, is investigated. From the Ho 3+ non-Kramers J=8 spin-orbital multiplet, the cubic crystal electric field yields six nearly degenerate low-energy levels. These constitute an anisotropic magnetic moment with a Jahn-Teller-like coupling to the lattice. In the cubic phase for T>T N =5.72(1)K, the paramagnetic neutron scattering is centered at k=($\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$) and was fit to dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Ho spins separated by {100} and ferromagnetic interactions between spins displaced by {$\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 0}. For T < T N , a type-II AFM long-range order with k=($\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$) develops along with a tetragonal lattice distortion. While neutron diffraction from a multidomain sample cannot unambiguously determine the spin orientation within a domain, the bulk magnetization, structural distortion, and our measurements of the magnetic excitations all show the easy axis coincides with the tetragonal axis. Finally, the weakly dispersive excitons for T < T N can be accounted for by a spin Hamiltonian that includes the crystal electric field and exchange interactions within the random phase approximation.

Mitigating CaCO 3 crystal nucleation and growth through continuous ion displacement via alternating electric fields

Mineral crystal formation poses a challenge on surfaces (e.g., heat exchangers, pipes, membranes, etc.) in contact with super-saturated fluids. Applying alternating currents (AC) to such surfaces can prevent surface crystallization under certain conditions. Here, we demonstrate that ion displacement induced by periodic charging and discharging of the electrical double layer (EDL) inhibits both heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation (and crystal growth) of CaCO 3 . Titanium sheets (meant to simulate metallic heat exchanger surfaces) are immersed in super-saturated CaCO 3 solutions with a saturation index >11. We show that at relatively high AC frequencies, incomplete EDL formation leads to an alternating electric field that propagates far into the bulk solution, inducing rapid ion migration that overwhelms the Brownian motion of ions. Electrochemical characterization reveals EDL charging/discharging under AC conditions that greatly inhibits precipitation. Operating at 4 V pp , 0.1–10 Hz reduces turbidity by over 96% and reduces CaCO 3 coverage on the metal plates by over 92%. Based on electrokinetic and crystallization models, the ion displacement velocity (exceeding the mean Brownian velocity) and displacement length disrupts ion collision and crystal nucleation. Overall, the technique has potential for preventing mineral crystal formation in heat exchangers and many other industrially relevant systems.

Topological magnetic hysteresis in single crystals of CeAgSb 2 ferromagnet

Closed-topology magnetic domains are usually observed in thin films and in an applied magnetic field. In this work, we report the observation of rectangular cross-section tubular ferromagnetic domains in thick single crystals of CeAgSb 2 in zero applied field. Relatively low exchange energy, small net magnetic moment, and anisotropic in-plane crystal electric fields lower the domain wall energy and allow for the formation of the closed-topology patterns. The tubular domain structure irreversibly transforms into a dendritic pattern upon cycling the magnetic field. This transition between closed and open topologies results in a ‘topological magnetic hysteresis’— the actual hysteresis in magnetization, not due to the imperfections and pinning, but due to the difference in the pattern morphology. Similar physics was suggested before in pure type-I superconductors and is believed to be a generic feature of other nonlinear single (present case), or two-phase (type-I superconductor) systems where the effects similar to demagnetization (shape-dependent macroscopic variation of properties) lead to pattern formation.

Importance of dynamic lattice effects for crystal field excitations in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr 2 Zr 2 O 7

We explore dynamic interactions between the crystal lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in a frustrated magnetic system using the example of a pyrochlore quantum spin-ice candidate Pr 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Using Raman scattering spectroscopy we demonstrate that crystal electric field excitations of Pr3+, which define the magnetic properties of Pr 2 Zr 2 O 7 , cannot be understood within a model of a static lattice. We identify vibronic interactions with a phonon which lead to a splitting of a doublet crystal field excitation at around 55 meV. We also observe an unconventional behavior of a splitting of the non-Kramers ground state doublet of Pr 3+ , revealed by observing excitations to the first excited singlet state $E$$^{0}_{g}$ → A 1 g at around 10 meV. The splitting has a strong temperature dependence, where the doublet structure is most prominent between 50 and 100 K, and the weight of one of the components strongly decreases on cooling contrary to simple thermal population tendency. Furthermore, we suggest a static or dynamic deviation of Pr 3+ from the position in the ideal crystal structure can be the origin of the effect, with the deviation strongly decreasing at low temperatures.

Explaining the extra crystal-field mode in 𝐴 ⁢Ce ⁢𝑋 2 (𝐴 = K, Rb, Na; 𝑋 = O, S, Se, Te)

A growing list of Ce-based magnets have shown an extra and heretofore unexplained crystal electric field (CEF) mode at high energies. We describe a process whereby an optical phonon can produce a split CEF mode well above the phonon energy. We use density functional theory and point-charge model calculations to estimate the phonon distortions and coupling to model this effect in KCeO 2 , showing that it accounts for the extra CEF mode observed. Furthermore, this mechanism is generic and may explain the extra modes observed on a variety of Ce 3+ compounds.
