Developing Data Citations from Digital Object Identifier Metadata

NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project has been processing information for the registration of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for the last five years of which an automated system has been in operation for the last two years. The ESDIS DOI registration system has registered over 2000 DOIs with over 1000 DOIs held in reserve until all required information has been collected. By working towards the goal of assigning DOIs to the 8000+ data collections under its management, ESDIS has taken the first step towards facilitating the use of data citations with those products. Jeanne Behnke, ESDIS Deputy Project Manager has reviewed and approved the poster.

Identifying genomic data use with the Data Citation Explorer

Increases in sequencing capacity, combined with rapid accumulation of publications and associated data resources, have increased the complexity of maintaining associations between literature and genomic data. As the volume of literature and data have exceeded the capacity of manual curation, automated approaches to maintaining and confirming associations among these resources have become necessary. Here we present the Data Citation Explorer (DCE), which discovers literature incorporating genomic data that was not formally cited. This service provides advantages over manual curation methods including consistent resource coverage, metadata enrichment, documentation of new use cases, and identification of conflicting metadata. The service reduces labor costs associated with manual review, improves the quality of genome metadata maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (JGI), and increases the number of known publications that incorporate its data products. The DCE facilitates an understanding of JGI impact, improves credit attribution for data generators, and can encourage data sharing by allowing scientists to see how reuse amplifies the impact of their original studies.

Microphysical Characteristics of Tropical Clouds

This report summarizes the analysis of data collected by the University of North Dakota Citation II measurement platform during three TRMM Field measurement campaigns. The Citation II made cloud measurements during TEFLUN B in Florida, the LBA program in Brazil, and KWAJEX in Kwajalein. The work performed can be divided into two parts. The first part consisted of reformatting the Citation data into a form more easily used to compare to the satellite information. The second part consisted of examination of the cloud data in order to characterize the properties of the tropical clouds. The reformatting of the Citation data was quite labor intensive and, due to the fact that the aircraft was involved in three of the field campaigns, it required a substantial number of person-hours to complete. Much of the analysis done on the second part was done in conjunction with the thesis work of Nicholas Anderson, then a graduate student at the University of North Dakota.

Development and operations of the astrophysics data system

Abstract service - Continued regular updates of abstracts in the databases, both at SA0 and at all mirror sites. - Modified loading scripts to accommodate changes in data format (PhyS) - Discussed data deliveries with providers to clear up problems with format or other errors (EGU) - Continued inclusion of large numbers of historical literature volumes and physics conference volumes xeroxed from the library. - Performed systematic fixes on some data sets in the database to account for changes in article numbering (AGU journals) - Implemented linking of ADS bibliographic records with multimedia files - Debugged and fixed obscure connection problems with the ADS Korean mirror site which were preventing successful updates of the data holdings. - Wrote procedure to parse citation data and characterize an ADS record based on its citation ratios within each database.

Creating a Repository of Publication Citations for a Data Center

Tracking dataset citations in scientific publications provide multiple benefits: obtaining citation indices for quantitative evaluation of the dataset scientific impact, learning about dataset usage in applied sciences, credits to dataset creators, datasets co-citation relationships and many more.

Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Prominence and Provenance of NASA Datasets in Research Publications

Attribution of datasets that were used to generate research results described in peer-reviewed publications to the original source of these datasets (which are often archived at NASA Earth Science data centers) has been very challenging. Even though the data citation standard of citing datasets as research artifacts and citing them with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) was introduced over a decade ago, most authors do not properly reference the data used in their studies and merely mention them in the text. The lack of proper citations of datasets makes the peer-reviewed publication less transparent, imperils reproducibility, and impedes open science. We offer an open-source publication management methodology and a tool that can help to enhance usage-based data discovery, prominence, and provenance of the data; reproducibility of the research results; and potentially increase the return on investment on NASA-funded research.

Evolving a NASA Digital Object Identifiers System with Community Engagement

To demonstrate how the ESDIS (Earth Science Data and Information System) DOI (Digital Object Identifier) system and its processes have evolved over these years based on the recommendations provided by the user community (whether the community members create and manage DOI information or use DOIs in the data citations). The user community is comprised of people with common interests and needs for data identifiers who are actively involved in the creation and usage process. Engagement describes the interactive context wherein the community provides information, evaluates the proposed processes, and provides guidance in the area of identifiers.

Towards Automated Analytics of Research Publications

For readers of scientific publications it remains a big challenge to unambiguously relate the published research with the data used. To a substantial degree it is attributed to authors, journals, editors, and reviewers not prioritizing correct data citation, which impacts traceability, repeatability, and giving credits to published authors and their funding sources. Furthermore, uniform classification of the content of the published research is hampered by journals using journal specific topics and letting authors to assign free text keywords to their papers. We demonstrate automated analytics methods for extracting and relating datasets used and the research application areas by processing 1,300 research papers that referenced the NASA Giovanni service (but probably not the datasets in particular) as supporting their publication process. This presentation was given during the 2022 ESIP January meeting held virtually in January 2022.
