Performance Analysis of Data Processing in Distributed File Systems with Near Data Processing

In the era of big data, the escalating volume and velocity of data generation pose significant challenges in data processing. Traditional systems like Spark and Hadoop manage the increasing amount and velocity of data by improving data placement and processing speeds. However, they face inherent limitations due to the essential data movement required for processing. In this paper, we explore the Skyhook framework, a novel extension of the Ceph distributed system, which significantly reduces the need for data movement. We present an extensive case study using the Skyhook framework, applying it with the TPC-H and K-means clustering algorithms. More specifically, we leverage the TPC-H benchmark to distinguish between CPU-intensive and I/O-intensive tasks. We explore the integration of K-means clustering into SQL, coupled with a near-data processing system to offload the computational burden of the K-means clustering algorithm to storage nodes. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of distributed data processing applications across three processing approaches: traditional layout (baseline), optimized layout, and near-data processing. Additionally, we introduce the use of the FIO tool to simulate real-world system workloads, enabling the measurement of performance metrics such as average latency and CPU utilization. Our research is a significant advance in understanding how to optimize data processing systems to meet the demands of the modern data landscape.

A Discrete Hankel Transform Approach to Nuclear Data Processing for Fusion Applications

This study introduces advancements to the numerical solutions employed in the processing of nuclear data for fusion applications. It leverages the convolution theorem and Fourier transform techniques to enhance computational efficiency and broaden applicability. Building upon a previously reported discrete Hankel transform approach for Doppler broadening, this work refines the solution of convolution integrals central to these applications. The methodology provides a general and unified framework for evaluating any convolution operation, regardless of whether the underlying problem involves temperature effects in nuclear reactions. The applicability to the nuclear data processing for fusion is demonstrated by deriving the convolution integrals for some of the fusion-related quantities. As before, the convolution operation utilizes a Gaussian-based kernel; however, the discrete Hankel transform of order $𝛼$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ is now applied to the forward Fourier transform of the nonkernel argument, rather than the inverse Fourier transform. This modification eliminates the need for the integration of the nonkernel, cross section–based function, which is a step that posed challenges for certain pointwise cross-section representations. It also removes the requirement for cross-section linearization. Optimized for graphics processing unit architectures, the approach significantly improves computational performance. These advancements are currently under evaluation as the foundation for the next-generation thermonuclear data file processing codes being developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Real-time data processing for serial crystallography experiments

We report the use of streaming data interfaces to perform fully online data processing for serial crystallography experiments, without storing intermediate data on disk. The system produces Bragg reflection intensity measurements suitable for scaling and merging, with a latency of less than 1 s per frame. Our system uses the CrystFEL software in combination with the ASAP::O data framework. In a series of user experiments at PETRA III, frames from a 16 megapixel Dectris EIGER2 X detector were searched for peaks, indexed and integrated at the maximum full-frame readout speed of 133 frames per second. The computational resources required depend on various factors, most significantly the fraction of non-blank frames ('hits'). The average single-thread processing time per frame was 242 ms for blank frames and 455 ms for hits, meaning that a single 96-core computing node was sufficient to keep up with the data, with ample headroom for unexpected throughput reductions. Further significant improvements are expected, for example by binning pixel intensities together to reduce the pixel count. We discuss the implications of real-time data processing on the `data deluge' problem from recent and future photon-science experiments, in particular on calibration requirements, computing access patterns and the need for the preservation of raw data.

RE-INTEGRATE EMT Simulation Tool: Input Data Processing Layer for Bulk Power System

This paper introduces an advanced input data processing layer for EMT simulations of large-scale bulk power systems. The paper proposes two versions of the RE-INTEGRATE EMT simulation tool, RE-INTEGRATE Gen-0 and RE-INTEGRATE Gen-1, which are developed to enhance simulation generalizability, scalability, and accuracy. The framework leverages a generic class design for components to incorporate linear equations, which are generated by discretizing the Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAEs) that represent the dynamics of the components. In addition, the framework employs a parsing algorithm that parses a power system’s raw and dyr files to generate a connectivity graph which is then traversed to form the overall system’s dynamics. The proposed input data processing layer is used to simulate the IEEE 39-bus test system. The obtained results demonstrate the framework’s capability to achieve simulation scalability and accuracy. Further, the results indicate that EMT simulations performed using the proposed automations can effectively handle complex grid configurations.
