Constraints on long-range forces in de Sitter space

The representation theory of de Sitter space admits partially massless (PM) particles, but whether such particles can participate in consistent interacting theories remains unclear. We investigate the consistency of theories containing PM fields, particularly when these fields are coupled to gravity. Our strategy exploits the fact that PM fields correspond to partially conserved currents on the spacetime boundary, which generate symmetries. These symmetries place stringent constraints on correlation functions of charged operators, allowing us to test the consistency of a proposed bulk spectrum. When the assumed operator content violates these constraints, the corresponding bulk theory is ruled out. Applying this framework, we show that, in four-dimensional de Sitter space, PM fields of spin 2 or 3 (at depth 0) cannot couple consistently to gravity: such couplings necessitate additional massive fields, which are inevitably non-unitary. In higher dimensions, however, the constraints can be satisfied without violating unitarity if further PM fields are included. The resulting structure leads to additional charge conservation laws, which suggests that consistency may ultimately require an infinite tower of higher-spin PM fields, akin to the situation for ordinary higher-spin symmetries. The methods developed here provide powerful constraints on possible long-range interactions in de Sitter space and delineate the landscape of consistent quantum field theories in cosmological spacetimes.

Fermionic shift symmetries in (anti) de Sitter space

We study extended shift symmetries that arise for fermionic fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and de Sitter (dS) space for particular values of the mass relative to the curvature scale. We classify these symmetries for general mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in arbitrary dimension and describe how fields with these symmetries arise as the decoupled longitudinal modes of massive fermions as they approach partially massless points. For the particular case of AdS 4 , we look for non-trivial Lie superalgebras that can underly interacting theories that involve these fields. We study from this perspective the minimal such theory, the Akulov-Volkov theory on AdS 4 , which is a non-linear theory of a spin-1/2 Goldstino field that describes the spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetry on AdS 4 down to the isometries of AdS 4 . We show how to write the nonlinear supersymmetry transformation for this theory using the fermionic ambient space formalism. We also study the Lie superalgebras of candidate multi-field examples and rule out the existence of a supersymmetric special galileon on AdS 4 .

De Sitter space is sometimes not empty

Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the Hilbert space of an isolated de Sitter universe is one dimensional but can appear larger when probed by a gravitating observer. To test this idea, we compute the von Neumann entropy of a field theory in a two-dimensional de Sitter universe which is entangled in a thermal-like state with the same field theory on a disjoint, asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole. Previously, it was shown that the replica trick for computing the entropy of such entangled gravitating systems requires the inclusion of a non-perturbative effect in quantum gravity — novel wormholes connecting the two spaces. Here we show that: (a) the expected wormholes connecting de Sitter and AdS universes exist, avoiding a no-go theorem via the presence of sources on the AdS boundary; (b) the entanglement entropy vanishes if the nominal entropy of the de Sitter cosmological horizon (S ds = $A^{dS}_{horizon}$/4G N ) is less than the entropy of the AdS black hole horizon (S BH = $A^{AdS}_{horizon}$/4G N ), i.e., S dS < S BH ; (c) the entanglement entropy is finite when S dS > S BH . Thus, the de Sitter Hilbert space is effectively nontrivial only when S dS > S BH . The AdS black hole we introduce can be regarded as an “observer” for de Sitter space. In this sense, our result is a non-perturbative generalization of the recent perturbative argument that the algebra of observables on the de Sitter static patch becomes nontrivial in the presence of an observer.

Quantum theory of three-dimensional de Sitter space

We sketch the construction of a quantum model of three-dimensional de Sitter space, based on the covariant entropy principle and the observation that semiclassical physics suggests the possibility of a consistent theory of a finite number of unstable massive particles with purely gravitational interactions. Our model is holographic, finite, unitary, causal, plausibly exhibits fast scrambling, and qualitatively reproduces features of semiclassical de Sitter physics. In an appendix we outline some calculations that might lead to further tests of the model. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quantum Ising model on (2+1)-dimensional anti–de Sitter space using tensor networks

We study the quantum Ising model on (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space using matrix product states (MPS) and matrix product operators (MPOs). We explore the bulk phase diagram of the theory on regular tessellations of hyperbolic space with coordination number seven and find disordered and ordered phases separated by a phase transition. We find that the boundary-boundary spin correlation function exhibits power law scaling deep in the disordered phase of the Ising model consistent with holography. At the critical point, we find the boundary entanglement entropy scales logarithmically with subsystem size but away from this, we see a linear scaling. In comparison, the full system exhibits a volume law scaling, which is expected in chaotic and/or highly connected systems. We also measure out of time ordered correlators (OTOCs) to explore the scrambling behavior of the theory.

Convolutional double copy in (anti) de Sitter space

The double copy is a remarkable relationship between gauge theory and gravity that has been explored in a number of contexts, most notably scattering amplitudes and classical solutions. The convolutional double copy provides a straightforward method to bridge the two theories via a precise map for the fields and symmetries at the linearised level. This method has been thoroughly investigated in flat space, offering a comprehensive dictionary both with and without fixing the gauge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we extend this to curved space with an (anti) de Sitter background metric. We work in the temporal gauge, and employ a modified convolution that involves the Mellin transformation in the time direction. As an example, we show that the point-like charge in gauge theory double copies to the (dS-) Schwarzschild black hole solution.

Operator origin of anomalous dimensions in de Sitter space

The late-time limit of the power spectrum for heavy (principal series) fields in de Sitter (dS) space yields a series of polynomial terms with complex scaling dimensions. Such scaling behavior is expected to result from an associated operator with a complex dimension. In a free theory, these complex dimensions are known to match the constraints imposed by unitarity on the space of states. Yet, perturbative corrections to the scaling behavior of operators are naively inconsistent with unitary evolution of the quantum fields in dS space. This paper demonstrates how to compute one-loop corrections to the scaling dimensions that appear in the two-point function from the field theory description in terms of local operators. We first show how to evaluate these anomalous dimensions using Mellin space, which has the feature that it naturally accommodates a scaleless regulator. We then explore the consequences for the soft de Sitter effective theory (SdSET) description that emerges in the long wavelength limit. Carefully matching between the UV and SdSET descriptions requires the introduction of novel nondynamical “operators” in the effective theory. This is not only necessary to reproduce results extracted from the Källén-Lehmann representation (that use the space of unitary states directly), but it is also required by general arguments that invoke positivity. Implications of the weak gravity conjecture for de Sitter space decay by flux discharge

We examine the implications of the weak gravity conjecture for the mechanisms for discharging cosmological constant via membrane nucleations. Once screening fluxes and membranes which source them enter, and weak gravity bounds are enforced, a generic de Sitter space must be unstable. We show that when all the flux terms which screen and discharge the cosmological constant are dominated by quadratic and higher order terms, the bounds from weak gravity conjecture and naturalness lead toward anthropic outcomes. In contrast, when the flux sectors are dominated by linear flux terms, anthropics may be avoided, and the cosmological constant may naturally decay toward smallest possible values. Generalized entanglement capacity of de Sitter space

Near horizons, quantum fields of low spin exhibit densities of states that behave asymptotically like 1 + 1 dimensional conformal field theories. In effective field theory, imposing some short-distance cutoff, one can compute thermodynamic quantities associated with the horizon, and the leading cutoff sensitivity of the heat capacity is found to equal to the leading cutoff sensitivity of the entropy. One can also compute contributions to the thermodynamic quantities from the gravitational path integral. For the cosmological horizon of the static patch of de Sitter space, a natural conjecture for the relevant heat capacity is shown to equal the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. These observations allow us to extend the well-known notion of the generalized entropy to a generalized heat capacity for the static patch of de Sitter (dS). The finiteness of the entropy and the nonvanishing of the generalized heat capacity suggest it is useful to think about dS as a state in a finite dimensional quantum gravity model that is not maximally uncertain. Black Holes and de Sitter Space as Time Mirrors

It is usually assumed that matter disappears together with the spacetime at the center of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). Here, we find that if we impose a boundary condition that the field does not disappear at the BH center (that is, field flux into the singularity vanishes), the BH acts as a time mirror that totally reflects the infalling light and matter outside the BH. Namely, the reflected field propagates backward in time, passes the event horizon and moves away from the BH. In this case, a BH can be used as a time machine that allows us to send a signal into the past. We also show that de Sitter spacetime acts as a time mirror provided particles do not disappear from the spacetime at r=∞.

Path integral games with de Sitter α-vacua

The α-vacua are a 1-parameter family of quantum field vacua in de Sitter space which are invariant under the isometry group SO(1, d). In this work give a path integral construction of the de Sitter α-vacua. We explain that these states can be prepared by acting on the Bunch-Davies vacuum with a certain non-local charge operator. While most conserved charges live on a single codimension-1 manifold, we show that this particular charge lives on a pair of two codimension-1 manifolds which are antipodal mirrors of each other. The rules for the manipulation of this charge as an insertion in the path integral are explained. We further explain how this charge can be used to solve for the wavefunctionals of the α-vacua at $\mathcal{I}$ | (in the regime that α is small) by deforming the equator of de Sitter space to $\mathcal{I}$ + /$\mathcal{I}$ – .

Positivity from Cosmological Correlators

Abstract Effective field theories in flat space and in anti-de Sitter space are constrained by causality and unitarity, often in the form of positivity bounds. Similar bounds have been harder to demonstrate in cosmological backgrounds, where the roles of unitarity and causality are more obscure. Fortunately, the expansion of the universe ensures that late-time cosmological correlators are effectively classical and the role of unitarity is played by classical statistical inequalities. For multi-field inflation, the resulting positivity constraints have long been known in terms of the Suyama-Yamaguchi inequality. In this paper, we demonstrate that similar statistical bounds imply nontrivial constraints for massive fields in the early universe. We show that any real anomalous dimensions for principal series fields in de Sitter space must be positive. We also derive a limit on the amplitude of particular oscillatory signals from inflation, including those arising in cosmological collider physics. Finally, we demonstrate that these constraints manifest themselves directly in the two-point statistics of matter and galaxies that will be measured in upcoming surveys.

Multi-Galileons in curved space

Using the probe brane construction of higher derivative effective field theories, extended to higher co-dimensions and curved spaces, we construct galileon and DBI theories on de Sitter space with N fields and an so (N) internal symmetry, non-linearly realizing the symmetries of a higher dimensional de Sitter space. In some cases, the theory admits a non-trivial vacuum that spontaneously breaks the so (N) symmetry, and around this vacuum the Goldstone modes have vanishing kinetic terms and become infinitely strongly coupled. This gives an example of a scalar effective field theory with two de Sitter vacua, one of which appears to have Boulware-Deser-like ghosts, and one of which does not.

Equivalence of EFTs and timelike extra dimensions

A flat 3-brane probing a five-dimensional anti–de Sitter space has the same symmetries and symmetry breaking pattern as one probing a five-dimensional de Sitter space with two time directions. Despite the seemingly different physical setups, we show that the effective field theory of the brane bending mode is identical in both cases. In particular, despite “wrong” signs in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action for the two-time de Sitter case, the theories have the same S -matrix. This is consistent with the expectation that effective field theories are determined solely by their degrees of freedom and pattern of symmetry breaking, even in the case of spacetime symmetries. We comment further on the equivalence between the Weyl/dilaton and DBI representations of the EFT of broken conformal symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Light scalars at the cosmological collider

We study the self-energies of weakly interacting scalar fields in de Sitter space with one field much lighter than the Hubble scale. We argue that self-energies drastically simplify in this light limit. We illustrate this in theories with two scalar fields, one heavy and one light, interacting with one another through either cubic or quartic interactions. To regulate infrared divergences, we compute these self-energies in Euclidean de Sitter space and then carefully analytically continue to Lorentzian signature. In particular, we do this for the most general renormalizable theory of two scalar fields with even interactions to leading order in the coupling and the mass of the light field. These self-energies are determined by de Sitter sunset diagrams, whose analytic structure and UV divergences we derive. Even at very weak couplings, the light field can substantially change how the heavy field propagates over long distances. The light field’s existence may then be inferred from how it modifies the heavy field’s oscillatory contribution to the primordial bispectrum in the squeezed limit, i.e. its cosmological collider signal.

Compact scalars at the cosmological collider

Abstract We study the dynamics of scalar fields with compact field spaces, or axions, in de Sitter space. We argue that the field space topology can qualitatively affect the physics of these fields beyond just which terms are allowed in their actions. We argue that the sharpest difference is for massless fields — the free massless noncompact scalar field does not admit a two-point function that is both de Sitter-invariant and well-behaved at long distances, while the massless compact scalar does. As proof that this difference can be observable, we show that the long-distance behavior of a heavy scalar field, and thus its cosmological collider signal, can qualitatively change depending on whether it interacts with a light compact or noncompact scalar field. We find an interesting interplay between the circumference of the field space and the Hubble scale. When the field space is much larger than Hubble, the compact field behaves similarly to a light noncompact field and forces the heavy field to dilute much faster than any free field can. However, depending on how much smaller the field space is compared to Hubble, the compact field can cause the heavy scalar to decay either faster or slower than any free field and so we conclude that there can be qualitative and observable consequences of the field space’s topology in inflationary correlation functions.
