Next-to-next-to-leading power corrections to unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) is a key tool for exploring the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon through Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions. While leading-power contributions to the SIDIS cross-section are well established, next-to-leading power (NLP) corrections of order 1/Q and next-to-next-to-leading power (NNLP) corrections of order 1/Q 2 to the hadronic tensor have only recently begun to be systematically investigated. These corrections are essential for reliable phenomenology and interpretation of modern high-precision data. In recent papers by one of the authors, NNLP corrections to the Drell-Yan process were derived using the rapidity factorization formalism. In the present work, we extend this approach to SIDIS and obtain analytic expressions for the unpolarized structure functions. We derive NNLP corrections that include convolutions of unpolarized distributions, f 1 , with unpolarized fragmentation functions, D 1 , and Boer-Mulders functions, ${h}_1^{\perp }$, with Collins fragmentation functions, ${H}_1^{\perp }$. We compare our results with previous formulations, provide numerical studies, confront our predictions with HERMES and COMPASS measurements, and present predictions for future experiments at Jefferson Lab and the Electron-Ion Collider.

Extraction of the neutron F 2 structure function from inclusive proton and deuteron deep-inelastic scattering data

The available world deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data on proton and deuteron structure functions F 2 p , F 2 d , and their ratios are leveraged to extract the free neutron F 2 n structure function, the F 2 n / F 2 p ratio, and associated uncertainties using the latest nuclear effect calculations in the deuteron. Special attention is devoted to the normalization of the proton and deuteron experimental datasets and to the treatment of correlated systematic errors, as well as the quantification of procedural and theoretical uncertainties. The extracted F 2 n dataset is utilized to evaluate the Q 2 dependence of the Gottfried sum rule and the nonsinglet F 2 p − F 2 n moments. To facilitate replication of our study, as well as for general applications, we provide a comprehensive DIS database including all recent Jefferson Lab 6 GeV measurements, the extracted F n 2 , a modified CTEQ-JLab global parton distribution function fit named CJ15nlo_mod, and grids with calculated proton, neutron, and deuteron DIS structure functions. Jet Definition and Transverse-Momentum–Dependent Factorization in Semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Using the color dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the color glass condensate effective theory, we study semi-inclusive jet production in DIS at small x in the limit where the photon virtuality Q 2 is much larger than the transverse momentum squared P$^{2}_{⊥}$ of the produced jet. In this limit, the cross section is dominated by aligned jet configurations, that is, quark–antiquark pairs in which one of the fermions—the would-be struck quark in the Breit frame—carries most of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. We show that physically meaningful jet definitions in DIS are such that the effective axis of the jet sourced by the struck quark is controlled by its virtuality rather than by its transverse momentum. For such jet definitions, we show that the next-to-leading order cross section admits factorization in terms of the (sea) quark transverse momentum dependent distribution, which in turn satisfies a universal Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Sudakov evolution.

Flavor, transverse momentum, and azimuthal dependence of charged pion multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with 10.6 GeV electrons

Measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering multiplicities for 𝜋 + and 𝜋 − from proton and deuteron targets are reported on a grid of hadron kinematic variables 𝑧, 𝑃 𝑇 , and 𝜙* for leptonic kinematic variables in the range 0.3<𝑥<0.6 and 3<𝑄 2 <5GeV 2 . Data were acquired in 2018 and 2019 at Jefferson Lab Hall C with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on 10-cm-long liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. Scattered electrons and charged pions were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer and Super High Momentum Spectrometer, respectively. The multiplicities were fitted for each bin in (𝑥,𝑄 2 ,𝑧,𝑃𝑡) to extract the 𝜙*—independent 𝑀 0 and the azimuthal modulations ⟨cos⁡(𝜙*)⟩ and ⟨cos⁡(2⁢𝜙*)⟩. The 𝑃𝑡 dependence of the 𝑀 0 results was found to be remarkably consistent for the four cases studied: 𝑒⁢𝑝→𝑒⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑝→𝑒⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑑→𝑒⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑋, 𝑒⁢𝑑→𝑒⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑋 over the range 0GeV<𝑃 𝑡 <0.4GeV, as were the multiplicities evaluated near 𝜙*=180∘ over the extended range 0GeV<𝑃 𝑡 <0.7GeV. The Gaussian widths of the 𝑃 𝑡 dependence exhibit a quadratic increase with 𝑧. The cos⁡(𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero for 𝜋 + , in agreement with previous world data, while the 𝜋 − moments were, in many cases, significantly greater than zero. The cos⁡(2⁢𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero. The higher statistical precision of this dataset of about 20 000 individual multiplicity values, compared with previously published data, should allow improved determinations of quark transverse momentum distributions and higher twist contributions.

Back-to-Back Inclusive Dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x : Complete NLO Results and Predictions

We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q ⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. They can be extended to other final states and provide a framework for precision tests of novel QCD many-body dynamics at the Electron-Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Validation of Hadron Mass Correction Schemes in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Low Energy Transfer

One method of describing the quark-gluon of the structure proton relies on factorizing its cross-section into a process-dependent short distance element and an independent long distance element that quantifies the quark and gluon momentum distributions within the proton. This research focuses on validating the kinematic range at which factorization theorems still accurately describe the cross-section, in particular for events that simulate scattering on large momentum quarks, that are sensitive to the details of the color mechanism. In this regime, effects which otherwise scale away at large energies, become non-negligible at low energies. The goal of this research is to assess the viability of an extended version of ?collinear factorization? recently proposed by J. Guerrero and A. Accardi, which includes kinematic corrections at quark level, known as ?hadron mass corrections?, to account for the masses of the quarks and the target. To accomplish this, deep inelastic scattering events are simulated using a realistic model of deep inelastic scattering, in which one may analytically calculate both the structure functions and the quark distribution functions. These simulated experiments are then used to test the viability of the proposed factorization theorem by fitting the quark distributions and comparing these to the analytically calculable ones. It is found that the viability of hadron mass corrections in low energy scattering experiments, such as those at Jefferson Lab, extends beyond the kinematic range suggested by analytic calculations alone, provided that residual higher twist corrections are simultaneously fitted to the data.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. II. Deuteron and spectator nucleon tagging

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (previous article), we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. In Part II (this article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. Methods of light-front quantization are employed to separate nuclear and hadronic structure in the high-energy process and achieve a composite description. The light-front wave function of the polarized deuteron is obtained from a rotationally covariant three-dimensional wave function in the center-of-mass frame of the proton-neutron system. The tagged structure functions are computed in the impulse approximation. The momentum and spin distribution of the active nucleon are controlled by the deuteron polarization and the detected spectator momentum (𝐷/𝑆 wave ratio). The cross section and spin asymmetries are evaluated for general deuteron polarization (vector and tensor, longitudinal and transverse) as functions of the spectator momentum. Tensor-polarized spin asymmetries of order unity are achieved for spectator momenta of approximately 300 MeV, which select configurations with a large 𝐷 wave. Sum rules for the tagged spin structure functions are derived. The results can be used for simulations of spectator tagging in future polarized fixed-target experiments (Jefferson Lab) or at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. I. Cross section and spin observables

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (this article) we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. A relativistically covariant formulation in terms of four-vectors and invariant polarization parameters is employed. The target polarization is described by a spin density matrix with vector and tensor polarization. The spin and azimuthal angle dependence of the semi-inclusive cross section is derived and parametrized in terms of invariant structure functions. To validate the result, the structure functions are expressed as photon-target helicity amplitudes with known symmetry properties. The expressions presented here are kinematic (no assumptions about particle production dynamics) and valid in all regions of the deep-inelastic final state (current and target fragmentation regions). In Part II (following article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. The semi-inclusive structure functions are computed by separating nuclear and hadronic structure, and the polarization observables are explored as functions of the tagged nucleon momentum.

Evaluation of longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measurements in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from the proton for the ECCE detector design

The evaluation of the measurement of double-spin asymmetries for charge-separated pions and kaons produced in deep-inelastic scattering from the proton using the ECCE detector design concept is presented, for the combinations of lepton and hadron beam energies of 5 × 41 GeV 2 and 18 × 275 GeV 2 . The study uses unpolarised simulated data that are processed through a full GEANT simulation of the detector. These data are then reweighted at the parton level with DSSV helicity distributions and DSS fragmentation functions, in order to generate the relevant asymmetries, and subsequently analysed. Furthermore, the performed analysis shows that the ECCE detector concept provides the resolution and acceptance, with a broad coverage in kinematic phase space, needed for a robust extraction of asymmetries. This, in turn, allows for a precise extraction of sea-quark helicity distributions.

Single-valued representation of unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order

We revisit the recently published analytic results for unpolarized and polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These expressions for the hard scattering coefficients contain case distinctions in the kinematic (𝑥,𝑧)-plane, splitting the analytic result into four regions. By reexpressing the coefficient functions in terms of single-valued polylogarithms, we remove these case distinctions and can present a unified result valid across the entire kinematic range of SIDIS. This reduces the length of the overall expressions by 30% to 60%.

High-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections

We present a state-of-the-art prediction for cross sections of neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from nucleon at high neutrino energies, E v , up to 1000 EeV (10 12 GeV). Our calculations are based on the latest CT18 NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their associated uncertainties. To make predictions for the highest energies, we extrapolate the PDFs to small x according to several procedures and assumptions, thus affecting the uncertainties at ultrahigh E v ; we quantify the uncertainties corresponding to these choices. Similarly, we quantify the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear corrections that are required to evaluate neutrino-nuclear cross sections for the neutrino observatories. These results can be applied to currently running astrophysical neutrino observatories, such as IceCube and KM3NeT, as well as various future experiments that have been proposed.

Suppression of neutral-pion production in deep-inelastic scattering off nuclei with the CLAS detector

We present the first threefold differential measurement for neutral-pion multiplicity ratios produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering on carbon, iron, and lead nuclei normalized to deuterium from CLAS at Jefferson Lab. We found that the neutral-pion multiplicity ratio is maximally suppressed for the leading hadrons (energy fraction 𝑧 → 1), suppression varying from 25% in carbon up to 75% in lead. An enhancement of the multiplicity ratio at low 𝑧 and high 𝑝$^2_𝑇$ is observed, suggesting an interconnection between these two variables. This behavior is qualitatively similar to the previous twofold differential measurement of charged pions by the HERMES Collaboration and, recently, by CLAS Collaboration. The largest enhancement was observed at high 𝑝$^2_𝑇$ for heavier nuclei, namely, iron and lead, while the smallest enhancement was observed for the lightest nucleus, carbon. This behavior suggests a competition between partonic multiple scattering, which causes enhancement, and hadronic inelastic scattering, which causes suppression.

Tagged deep inelastic scattering measurement on deuterium with the LAD experiment

Here, the origin of the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium can be tested with tagged recoil nucleon measurements from deep inelastic scattering off electrons on deuterium. The LAD experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) will measure the modification of the neutron structure function for high-momentum, highly-virtual neutrons by measuring the spectator recoil protons in coincidence with the scattered electron. An update on the experimental setup and projected results is presented. The experiment will collect data in Fall 2024.

SIDIS-RC EvGen: A Monte-Carlo event generator of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the lowest-order QED radiative corrections

SIDIS-RC EvGen is a C++ standalone Monte-Carlo event generator for studies of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes at medium to high lepton beam energies. In particular, the generator contains binary and library components for generating SIDIS events and calculating cross sections for unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beam and unpolarized, longitudinally or transversely polarized target. The structure of the generator incorporates transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, whereby we obtain multi-dimensional binned simulation results, which will facilitate the extraction of important information about the three-dimensional nucleon structure from SIDIS measurements. In order to build this software, we have used recent elaborate QED calculations of the lowest-order radiative effects, applied to the leading order Born cross section in SIDIS. Here, in this paper, we provide details on the theoretical formalism as well as the construction and operation of SIDIS-RC EvGen, e.g., how we handle the event generation process and perform multi-dimensional integration. We also provide example programs, flowcharts, and numerical results on azimuthal transverse single-spin asymmetries.

Polarized Deep-Inelastic Scattering with Spin Correlations in Herwig 7

This repository is the research software and reproducibility companion for the HerwigPol polarized deep-inelastic scattering implementation developed for Herwig 7. It brings together the modified Herwig and ThePEG source snapshots, the curated POLDIS fixed-order reference code, the custom Rivet analyses, the DIS validation workflow, and the paper source in a single formal repository layout. The repository is intended to preserve the source-level ingredients needed to rebuild and re-run the validated DIS studies. It therefore tracks code, input cards, workflow drivers, and technical notes, while intentionally excluding generated artifacts such as build products, campaign outputs, merged YODA files, plots, and rendered paper outputs.

Longitudinal spin transfer to Λ hyperons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the CLAS12 spectrometer

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿⁢𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.
