Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe 2 As 2 revealed by 153 Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties. Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields H ext greater than the typical laboratory-scale magnetic fields 10–15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane H ext ~ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe 2 As 2 . To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. In this paper, using 153 Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu 2+ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane H ext . Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Deformation twinning and detwinning in extruded Mg-4Al: In-situ experiment and crystal plasticity simulation

Deformation twinning and detwinning in extruded Mg-4Al were investigated using in-situ SEM-DIC experiments and crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulation. In this study, the in-situ SEM-DIC method was used to provide a unique set of data including twin/detwin characteristics and twin area fraction in addition to strain maps. A statistical analysis of the activation of twin variants and twin area fraction during both twinning and detwinning was conducted. A strong correlation was found between twin growth/shrinkage and the Schmid Factor (SF) for individual twin variants Higher twin SF during loading and unloading led to higher twin growth and shrinkage, respectively. However, after the applied compressive strain was removed, the pattern of the twin area fractions of the residual twin variants versus their nominal SFs did not follow the trend observed at the maximum compressive strain. Using a systematic methodology and an advanced twin/detwin model, the PRISMS-Plasticity CPFE simulation was calibrated using experimentally determined stress versus strain and twin area fraction versus strain information. A comprehensive evaluation of the CPFE model was conducted to determine its ability to capture the statistics of twin variants activation and twin area fraction. CPFE accurately captured the statistical aspects of both twinning and detwinning. Finally, it also predicted the first dominant twin variant for 47.5% of the grains and at least one of the two dominant twin variants for 80% of the grains at maximum compressive strain.

Uneven Strain Distribution Induces Consecutive Dislocation Slipping, Plane Gliding, and Subsequent Detwinning of Penta-Twinned Nanoparticles

Twin structures possess distinct physical and chemical properties by virtue of their specific twin configuration. However, twinning and detwinning processes are not fully understood on the atomic scale. Integrating in situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy and molecular dynamic simulations, here, we find tensile strain in the asymmetrical 5-fold twins of Au nanoparticles leads to twin boundary migration through dislocation sliding (slipping of an atomic layer) along twin boundaries and dislocation reactions at the 5-fold axis under an electron beam. Migration of one or two layers of twin planes is governed by energy barriers, but overall, the total energy, including surface, lattice strain, and twin boundary energy, is relaxed after consecutive twin boundary migration, leading to a detwinning process. In addition, surface rearrangement of 5-fold twinned nanoparticles can aid in the detwinning process.

Mechanical detwinning device for anisotropic resistivity measurements in samples requiring dismounting for particle irradiation

Uniaxial stress is used to detwin samples of orthorhombic iron based superconductors to study their intrinsic electronic anisotropy. Here we describe the development of a new detwinning setup enabling variable-load stress-detwinning with easy sample mounting/dismounting without the need to re-solder the contacts. It enables the systematic study of the anisotropy evolution as a function of an external parameter when the sample is modified between the measurements. In our case, the external parameter is the dose of 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at low temperature. We illustrate the approach by studying resistivity anisotropy in single crystals of Ba 1-x K x Fe 2 As 2 at x =0.25 where the much discussed unusual re-entrance of tetragonal C 4 phase, C 4 → C 2 → C 4 , is observed on cooling. With the described technique we found a significant anisotropy increase in C 2 phase after electron irradiation with dose of 2.35 C/cm 2 .

Virtual texture analysis to understand microstructure effects on deformation twinning and detwinning behavior in BCC metals

Understanding and predicting deformation twinning contributions to plastic deformation in BCC metals has been a long-standing challenge due to the interplay with dislocation slip and non-Schmid effects that render an asymmetry under tension and compression. This paper uses molecular dynamics simulations to understand the effect of unloading and grain orientation on deformation twinning in a nanocrystalline Fe (nc-Fe) system as a model BCC metal. The nc-Fe system is loaded under uniaxial stress tension and compression to understand the effect of grain orientation (Schmid effects) on deformation twinning behavior and the tension/compression asymmetry (non-Schmid effects). A new virtual texture analysis “VirTex” tool is used to understand the role of grain orientation on the nucleation of twins and their contributions to the observed stress–strain response. For certain grain orientations, the twinnability is observed to be different in tension and compression. In addition, the flow stress accommodation from twins in certain grains is observed to be different in tension and compression and different from that for the grains. Subsequent unloading leads to detwinning in the deformed microstructures, where the extent of detwinning depends on the strain from which the system is unloaded and on the morphology of the twin. Lastly, the simulations are carried out to analyze the role of the Schmid factor on the twinnability and asymmetry in tension and compression.

In situ monitoring of dislocation, twinning, and detwinning modes in an extruded magnesium alloy under cyclic loading conditions

This work investigates the microscopic deformation mechanisms of an extruded, precipitation-strengthened AZ80 magnesium (Mg) alloy subjected to strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue using in situ neutron diffraction measurements. Results demonstrate that the plastic deformation during cyclic loading is dominated by the alternating {10.2} extension twinning and detwinning mechanisms. The observed deformation mode is strongly texture and precipitate dependent. For the initial texture, the tested material has two major texture components which result in the occurrence of extension twinning during both compression and reverse tension in the first two cycles. The prolonged detwinning process in the following cycles is proposed to relieve the shear stress field of {00.2} grains, leading to the disappearance of twinning. The precipitation strengthening results in an increase of the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) by similar to 33 MPa for the extension twinning in this AZ80 alloy. Here, the synergistic effects of the initial texture, precipitation strengthening, and load sharing of various grain families and phases contribute to the complicated evolution of dominant deformation mechanisms, among which elevated dislocation activities are believed to be responsible for the relatively poor low-cycle-fatigue lifetime when compared to other Mg alloys.

Anisotropic magnetic excitations of a frustrated bilinear-biquadratic spin model: Implications for spin waves of detwinned iron pnictides

Elucidating the nature of spin excitations is important to understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. Motivated by recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the nearly 100% detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 , we study the spin dynamics of an $\textit{S}$ = 1 frustrated bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the antiferromagnetic phase with wave vector (π, 0). The biquadratic interactions are treated in a dynamical way using a flavor-wave theory in an $\textit{SU}$(3) representation. Besides the dipolar spin wave (magnon) excitations, the biquadratic interactions give rise to quadrupolar excitations at high energies. In this work, we find that the quadrupolar wave significantly influences, in an energy dependent way, the anisotropy between the spin excitation spectra along the (π, 0) and (0, π) directions in the wave vector space. Our theoretical results capture the essential behavior of the spin dynamics measured in the antiferromagnetic phase of the detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 . More generally, our results underscore the importance of electron correlation effects for the microscopic physics of the iron pnictides.

Orbital selective spin waves in detwinned NaFeAs

The existence of orbital-dependent electronic correlations has been recognized as an essential ingredient to describe the physics of iron-based superconductors. NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion below T s ≈ 60 K, forming an electronic nematic phase with two 90° rotated (twinned) domains, and orders antiferromagnetically below T N ≈ 42 K. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves in uniaxial pressure-detwinned NaFeAs. By comparing the data with combined density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we conclude that spin waves up to an energy scale of E crossover ≈ 100 meV are dominated by d yz -d yz intraorbital scattering processes, which have the twofold (C 2 ) rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. On the other hand, the spin wave excitations above E crossover , which have approximately fourfold (C 4 ) rotational symmetry, arise from the d xy -d xy intraorbital scattering that controls the overall magnetic bandwidth in this material. In addition, we find that the low-energy (E ≈ 6 meV) spin excitations change from approximate C 4 to C 2 rotational symmetry below a temperature T* (>T s ), while spin excitations at energies above E crossover have approximate C 4 rotational symmetry and are weakly temperature dependent. Here, these results are consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, where the presence of a uniaxial strain necessary to detwin NaFeAs also raises the onset temperature T* of observable orbital-dependent band splitting to above T s , thus supporting the notion of orbital selective spin waves in the nematic phase of iron-based superconductors.

Anisotropic optical properties of detwinned BaFe 2 As 2

The optical properties of a large, detwinned single crystal of BaFe 2 As 2 have been examined over a wide frequency range above and below the structural and magnetic transition at T N ≃138 K. Above T N the real part of the optical conductivity and the two infrared-active lattice modes are almost completely isotropic; the lattice modes show a weak polarization dependence just above T N . For T < T N , the optical conductivity due to the free-carrier response is anisotropic, being larger along the a axis than the b axis below ≃ 30 meV; above this energy the optical conductivity is dominated by the interband contributions, which appear to be isotropic. Furthermore, the splitting of the low-energy infrared-active mode below T N is clearly observed, and the polarization modulation of the new modes may be used to estimate that the crystal is ≃ 70% detwinned. The high-frequency mode, with a threefold increase in strength of the lower branch below T N and nearly silent upper branch, remains enigmatic.

Multiscale modeling of twinning and detwinning behavior of HCP polycrystals

A multiscale scheme is presented here to capture the twinning and detwinning mechanisms during cyclic loading of HCP polycrystals. In the current framework, the crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) method is employed at the microstructural scale. The response of twinned regions at a material point is calculated using a novel homogenization scheme via a Taylor-type model. The homogenized behavior is then used in the CPFE to obtain the response of a polycrystal. An efficient rate-independent crystal plasticity model that has been incorporated into the open source PRISMS-Plasticity software is introduced here to capture the response of the twinned region. Accordingly, the corresponding algorithmic tangent modulus is derived. Finally, this multiscale scheme is validated against data available for the cyclic response of Mg alloy ZK60A. The results show that the multiscale model can capture the key elements of the sample response observed during the experiment.

A surprising proliferation of detwinning in β -tin at extreme loading rates

Integrating data from dynamic compression experiments of condensed matter across three national laboratories has led to insight and quantitative calibration of materials strength over decades of loading rate. For many materials, a single strength model (such as PTW) is sufficient to capture the flow-stress strain rate relationship which is monotonic. Here, we show here that β -tin, a tetragonal metal, exhibits dramatic deviations from this behavior. Naive fitting to a single PTW model is insufficient to capture the behavior; indeed, such resulting inferred flow stress versus strain exhibits a non-monotonic behavior. We suggest a resolution to this by proposing that in β -tin there are important Bauschinger effects arising from favorable conditions for twinning and detwinning. A simple yield surface model when paired with PTW hardening captures the experimental data.

Strongly anisotropic antiferromagnetic coupling in EuFe 2 As 2 revealed by stress detwinning

Of all parent compounds of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, EuFe 2 As 2 exhibits by far the largest magnetostructural coupling due to the sizable biquadratic interaction between Eu and Fe moments. While the coupling between Eu antiferromagnetic order and Fe structural/antiferromagnetic domains enables rapid field detwinning, this prevents simple magnetometry measurements from extracting the critical fields of the Eu metamagnetic transitions. Furthermore we measure these critical fields by combining x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy with in-situ tunable uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field. The combination of two tuning knobs allows us to separate the stressdetwinning of structural domains from the field-induced reorientation of Eu moments. Intriguingly, from the critical field values we find that the Eu interplanar interaction is strongly anisotropic. We argue that this anisotropic exchange term is likely a consequence of the strong anisotropy in the magnetically ordered Fe layer, which highlights the non-trivial interplay between Eu-Fe magnetism in this system.

Spectral evidence for unidirectional charge density wave in detwinned BaNi 2 As 2

In the iron-based superconductors, unconventional superconductivity emerges in proximity to intertwined electronic orders consisting of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave (SDW). Recently, BaNi 2 As 2 , like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe 2 As 2 , has been discovered to host a symmetry-breaking structural transition but coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) instead of SDW, providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, in this work, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning B 1 g uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe 2 As 2 , the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi 2 As 2 are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Furthermore, no nematic band splitting is resolved above the structural transition. Our measurements point to a likely lattice origin of the CDW order in BaNi 2 As 2 .

In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance in detwinned BaFe 2-x Ni x As 2 (x = 0, 0.6)

Understanding the magnetoresistance (MR) of a magnetic material forms the basis for uncovering the orbital mechanisms and charge-spin interactions in the system. Although the parent state of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, including BaFe 2 As 2 , exhibits unusual electron transport properties resulting from spin and charge correlations, there is still valuable insight to be gained by understanding the in-plane MR effect due to twin domains in the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic ordered state. Here, we study the in-plane magnetoresistance anisotropy in detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 and compare the results to the nonmagnetic Ni-doped sample. We find that in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, BaFe 2 As 2 exhibits anisotropic MR that becomes large at low temperatures and high fields. Both transverse and longitudinal MRs are highly anisotropic and dependent on the field and current orientations. Furthermore, these results cannot be fully explained by calculations considering only the anisotropic Fermi surface. Instead, the spin orientation of the ordered moment also affects the MR effect, suggesting the presence of a large charge-spin interaction in BaFe 2 As 2 that is not present in the Ni-doped material.
