Highly boosted dielectron identification in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A new technique is developed to identify dielectrons (e$^+$e$^-$) with Lorentz boost $γ_\mathrm{L}$$\gt$ 20 that produce one single merged cluster in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector. The identification uses two multivariate models: one for the case where both electron tracks are reconstructed, and another where only one of the tracks is reconstructed. The efficiency is determined using proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Boosted J/$ψ$ mesons decaying into e$^+$e$^-$ pairs are used to estimate the efficiency of the model with two tracks, yielding an overall efficiency of 80%. The Z $\to$ $μ^+μ^-γ$ events, where the photon converts into a collimated dielectron, are used for the model with a single track, yielding an efficiency of about 60%. A dedicated energy correction for dielectron candidates is also developed using B$^\pm$ $\to$ J/$ψ$K$^\pm$ $\to$ e$^+$e$^-$K$^\pm$ data.

Search for $t$-channel scalar and vector leptoquark exchange in the high-mass dimuon and dielectron spectra in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for t-channel exchange of leptoquarks (LQs) is performed in dimuon and dielectron spectra using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Eight scenarios are considered, in which up or down quarks couple to muons or electrons via a scalar or vector LQ exchange, for dilepton invariant masses above 500 GeV. The LQ masses are probed up to 5 TeV, beyond a regime probed by previous pair-production and single-production searches. The differential distributions of dilepton events are fit to templates that model the nonresonant LQ exchange and various standard model background processes. Limits are set on LQ-fermion coupling strengths for scalar and vector LQ masses in the 1–5 TeV range at 95% confidence level, establishing stringent limits on first- and second-generation LQs.

Dielectron production in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

The first measurement of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pair production at midrapidity and low invariant mass in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The yield of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs is compared with a cocktail of expected hadronic decay contributions in the invariant mass (𝑚𝑒⁢𝑒) and pair transverse momentum (𝑝 T,𝑒⁢𝑒 ) ranges 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 3.5 GeV/𝑐 2 and 𝑝 T,𝑒⁢𝑒 < 8 GeV/𝑐. For 0.18 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 0.5 GeV/𝑐 2 the ratio of data to the cocktail of hadronic contributions amounts to 1.40 ± 0.11⁢(stat.) ± 0.23 ⁢(syst.) ± 0.16⁢ (cocktail) and 1.42 ± 0.11⁢ (stat.) ± 0.23 (syst.)$^{+0.24}_{−0.29}$ ⁢(cocktail), including or not including medium effects in the estimation of the heavy-flavor background, respectively. It is consistent with predictions from two different models for an additional contribution of thermal 𝑒+⁢𝑒− pairs from the hadronic and partonic phases. In the intermediate-mass range (1.2 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 2.6 GeV/𝑐 2 ), the pair transverse impact parameter of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs (DCA𝑒⁢𝑒, where “DCA” denotes “distance of closest approach”) is used for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions to separate displaced dielectrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays from a possible (thermal) contribution produced at the interaction point. The data are consistent with a suppression of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs from $𝑐\bar{𝑐}$ and an additional prompt component. Finally, the first direct-photon measurement in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is reported via the study of virtual direct photons in the transverse momentum range 1 < 𝑝 T < 5 GeV/𝑐. A model including prompt photons, as well as photons from the preequilibrium and fluid-dynamic phases, can reproduce the result, while being at the upper edge of the data uncertainties.

Toward an improved nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium model for more predictive simulations of ignition scale hohlraums

Recently, nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) modeling has been identified as the primary reason for discrepant predictions of the peak neutron production time in indirectly driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) platforms. It has also been observed that predictions of collisional excitation rates differ by as much as 50% from measurements. Theoretical uncertainties in dielectronic recombination rates have also been posited as possibly contributing to errors in NLTE predictions. This work examines the impact of multipliers on collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates on simulations of a directly driven gold sphere and an indirect drive ICF implosion. It is found that multipliers on the collisional excitation rates have a strong impact on radiant intensity and electron temperature and a weaker impact on ionization state, whereas multipliers on dielectronic recombinations rates strongly impact ionization state with a smaller impact on radiant intensity and electron temperature. A self-consistent NLTE model which places multipliers on differing transitions, as motivated by experimental measurements and more detailed atomic physics predictions, improves agreement but does not completely eliminate discrepancies with measurements of the radiant intensity within the 2–4 keV spectral range.

Measurement of the 𝐷 0 →𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − branching fraction and search for 𝐷 0 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − decays at Belle

We present a study of the rare charm meson decays 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − , and 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − using a 942 fb −1 dataset collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider. We identify 𝐷 0 candidates via the charge of the pion from 𝐷* + →𝐷 0 ⁢𝜋 + decays and normalize the branching fractions to 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 + decays. The branching fraction for decay 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − is measured to be (39.6 ± 4.5 (stat) ± 2.9 (syst)) × 10 −7 , with the dielectron mass in the 𝜌/𝜔 mass region 675 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 875 MeV/⁢𝑐 2 . We also search for 𝐷 0 → ℎ − ⁡ℎ (′)+ ⁡𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − (ℎ (′) = 𝐾, 𝜋) decays with the dielectron mass near the 𝜂 and 𝜙 resonances, and away from these resonances for the 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − modes. For these modes, we find no significant signals and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions at the 𝒪⁡(10 −7 ) level.

Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for nonresonant new physics phenomena in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The analysis considers two effective field theory models with dimension-six operators; involving four-fermion contact interactions between two leptons (ℓℓ, electrons or muons) and b or s quarks (bbℓℓ and bsℓℓ). Two lepton flavor combinations (ee and μμ) are required and events are classified as having 0, 1, or ≥2 b-tagged jets in the final state. No significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set on the production cross section of the new physics signals. These translate into lower limits on the energy scale Λ of 6.9 to 9.0 TeV in the bbℓℓ model, depending on model parameters, and on the ratio of energy scale and effective coupling, Λ/g*, of 2.0 to 2.6 TeV in the bsℓℓ model. Lepton flavor universality is also tested by comparing the dielectron (ee) and dimuon (μμ) mass spectra for different b-tagged jet multiplicities. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation of unity is observed.

Measurement of the Drell–Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ 13 TeV

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell-Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient $A_4$ is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ = 0.23152 $\pm$ 0.00031, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

In this letter, we present the first measurement of direct photons at the transverse momentum of 1 < 𝑝 T < 6 GeV/𝑐 at midrapidity 𝜂 < 0.8 in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The fraction of virtual direct photons in the inclusive virtual photon spectrum is obtained from a fit to the dielectron invariant mass spectrum. In the limit of zero invariant mass, this fraction is equal to the relative contribution of real direct photons in the inclusive real photon spectrum. Contributions from decays of light- flavour neutral mesons are estimated using independent measurements in proton–proton collisions at the same energy and the same event class. For the first time at the LHC energies, a direct-photon signal is observed at low 𝑝T in both inelastic and high-multiplicity event classes, with a significance of 3.2𝜎 and 1.9𝜎 in terms of standard deviations, correspondingly. The yield of direct photons in inelastic pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The integrated photon yield is studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and is compared to the results from other experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show a significant increase of direct- photon yield with charged-particle multiplicity.

Coherent J/ψ photoproduction at midrapidity in Pb – Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The coherent J∕𝜓 photoproduction cross section is measured for the first time at midrapidity in peripheral to semicentral P b − P b collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The centrality differential cross section d 𝜎 ∕d𝑦 is reported for the centrality range 40–90%, together with the doubly-differential cross section d 2 𝜎∕d𝑦d𝑝 T , extracted in two peripheral centrality classes. The J∕𝜓 mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron channel, in the rapidity interval |𝑦| < 0.9 using the ALICE central barrel detectors. The J∕𝜓 cross section at midrapidity is statistically compatible to the earlier ALICE measurement at forward rapidity and at the same centre-of-mass energy, and shows only a mild centrality dependence over the covered range. Several sets of theoretical calculations taking into account the hadronic overlap in the collisions but ignoring possible final-state effects from a hot expanding medium are found to give a fairly good description of the current measurements within uncertainties.

Spectroscopic diagnostics of high-temperature plasma in stellar coronae using Fe XXIV-XXIV K-shell lines with XRISM

The RS CVn type binary star GT Muscae was observed during its quiescence using the Resolve X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer onboard XRISM. The main and satellite lines of the Fe XXIV-XXIV K-shell transitions were resolved for the first time from stellar sources. We conducted line ratio analysis to investigate any deviations from collisional ionization equilibrium and Maxwell electron energy distribution with a single temperature. By using five combinations of direct excitation lines and dielectronic recombination satellite lines in three line complexes (Fe He$\alpha$, Ly$\alpha$, and He$\beta$), we found that the plasma is well characterized by two-temperature thermal plasmas with temperatures of 1.7 and 4.3 keV, which is consistent with thermal broadening of Fe xxv, and the broad-band fitting results in the 1.7–10 keV band. Other forms of deviation from a single-temperature plasma, such as different ionization and electron temperatures or the $\kappa$ distribution for the electron energy distributions, are not favored, which is reasonable for stellar coronae at quiescence. This study demonstrates the utility of the Fe K-shell line ratio diagnostics to probe plasma conditions using X-ray microcalorimeters.

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

New opportunities for rare charm from $Z\rightarrow c\bar{c}$ decays

We analyze the potential of rare charm decays as probes of new physics at a high-luminosity flavor facility operating at the Z pole, such as the FCC-ee or CEPC. In particular, we identify clean null-test observables in $D^0 → π^+ π^- v\bar{v}$ and in polarized $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ decays with $ℓ = e, μ$. Complementarity with the LHC and HL-LHC flavor programs arises from the characteristic features of a Tera-Z environment: the capability to study missing-energy modes and charm production with significant polarization. We improve the theoretical description of $D^0 → π^+ π^- v\bar{v}$ decays and work out the phenomenology of polarization-induced null-test observables in $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ decays. In regions of dilepton mass near the φ resonance, polarization asymmetries can reach $O$(5%) for muons and $O$(14%) for electrons times the $Λ^+_c$ polarization. We also point out synergies between the dineutrino and the dilepton modes using the SMEFT framework of heavy new physics. Using the IDEA detector concept at FCC-ee, we find in simulation studies that dineutrino branching fractions as low as ~ 2 x 10 -7 can be probed, which reaches well into the parameter space of new physics, and also allows for discrimination of lepton flavor structures. Furthermore, the measurement of asymmetries in $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ at $O$(1%) will be possible. Similar sensitivities are expected for dielectron final states, although robust predictions will require further dedicated studies.

Measurement of the weak mixing angle at 13 TeV with the CMS detector

This document summarizes work in experimental high-energy physics completed as part of the author’s doctoral studies. The central piece of this thesis is the precision measurement of the effective weak mixing angle at the CMS detector. The effective weak mixing angle is a key parameter in the standard model of particle physics and is sensitive to radiative corrections from beyond standard model physics. The measurement is made by using the forward backwards asymmetry of Drell-Yan dilepton pairs. The data is from proton proton collisions at √s =13 TeV collected in Run 2 of the LHC from 2016-2018. The measurement uses dimuon and dielectron pairs and includes a special class of forward electrons developed for this measurement that do not rely on the tracking subdetector. Using the CT18Z parton distribution function set the weak mixing angle was determined to be [equation did not render] The largest contribution to the uncertainty comes from the parton distribution functions.

Reactivity of the Hydrated Electron

Hydrated electrons are created in virtually every radiation environment and in many photochemical or electrochemical environments where liquid water is present, so their reaction products and reaction rate constants are naturally important in applications. Thanks to the strong optical absorbance of (e - ) aq , these rate constants are easy to measure, and a large database has been accumulated. It is not generally appreciated that no working theory of hydrated electron reaction rates presently exists. We discuss key experimental observations of hydrated electron reactions in the context of recent progress in theoretical and simulation developments toward understanding them, made possible by ever increasing computational power.
