On differential transformations between Cartesian and curvilinear (geodetic) coordinates

Differential transformations are developed between Cartesian and curvilinear orthogonal coordinates. Only matrix algebra is used for the presentation of the basic concepts. After defining the reference systems used the rotation (R), metric (H), and Jacobian (J) matrices of the transformations between cartesian and curvilinear coordinate systems are introduced. A value of R as a function of H and J is presented. Likewise an analytical expression for J(-1) as a function of H(-2) and R is obtained. Emphasis is placed on showing that differential equations are equivalent to conventional similarity transformations. Scaling methods are discussed along with ellipsoidal coordinates. Differential transformations between elipsoidal and geodetic coordinates are established.

Differential transformation for satellite injection.

This paper provides an analytical method for computing the required orbital inclination change when the nominal orbital node rate is slightly modified to meet satellite mission requirements. A first-order theory retaining up to J sub 2 terms of the earth-oblateness perturbation has been found adequate to generate a four-decimal digit accuracy for required orbital changes. A numerical example of an actual ITOS series prelaunch analysis has been given to illustrate computational steps.

Pressure Transducer Has Long Service Life

Differential-pressure transducer includes a piston, helical springs, and a linear variable-differential transformer concentric with piston. Transducer senses motion of piston in response to changes in pressure differential. Eight seals within the transducer prevent fluid leakage from one pressure line to the other. Reliability and operating life of the new unit are superior to many conventional transducers.

Noncontacting vibration transducer has constant sensitivity

Noncontacting transducer with constant sensitivity automatically measures the vibration amplitudes along the span of a vibrating structure of irregular contour. A system employing a feedback control positions the transducer at a constant height above the test surfaces. A differential transformer facilitates calibration and extends the amplitude range of the system.

Electronic skewing circuit monitors exact position of object underwater

Linear Variable Differential Transformer /LVDT/ electronic skewing circuit guides a long cylindrical capsule underwater into a larger tube so that it does not contact the tube wall. This device detects movement of the capsule from a reference point and provides a continuous signal that is monitored on an oscilloscope.

Deflection circuit monitors force on object under water

Capsule containing samples for radiation testing is guided under through a seal to an exact position within a nuclear reactor. A Linear Variable Differential Transformer /LVDT/ flexplate deflection circuit monitors the force on the capsule as it is positioned within the reactor.

A dilatometer for volume-temperature determinations of liquids.

An instrument is described for the continuous volume measurement of small (3.7 ml) samples of liquids as a function of temperature. The sample is sealed in a stainless steel bellows chamber. Volume changes are measured with a linear variable differential transformer while temperature is measured by means of a thermistor and associated circuitry. Volume changes can be determined to better than .1 microliter ml over a temperature range of 10-60 C. The maximum sample volume change is 7%.

High-pressure high-temperature transducer

Compact instrument has active and reference sides consisting of tubes that elongate in response to increasing interior pressures. Relative displacement of tubes is measured by linear variable differential transformer to determine pressure on active side. Device needs no internal cooling, thus eliminating condensation problem with gases containing saturated steam.

LVDT gage for fracture-toughness tests in liquid hydrogen

Linear-variable differential transformer replaces conventional resistance strain gages to measure crack-mouth-opening displacement. LVDT is superior in tests under liquid hydrogen, where boiling of hydrogen on resistive is suited to broad temperature range and hostile environments such as nuclear reactors.

Fast-Acting Electrohydraulic Servo

Electrohydraulic servo controls moving elements of airflow valve. Position of moving element and attached piston is monitored by linear variable-differential transformer (LVDT). Single-stage servo valve lets fluid into and out of piston volume in response to feedback signals from the LVDT.

Hand-Held Electronic Gap-Measuring Tools

Repetitive measurements simplified by tool based on LVDT operation. With fingers in open position, Gap-measuring tool rests on digital readout instrument. With fingers inserted in gap, separation alters inductance of linear variable-differential transformer in plastic handle. Originally developed for measuring gaps between surface tiles of Space Shuttle orbiter, tool reduces measurement time from 20 minutes per tile to 2 minutes. Also reduces possibility of damage to tiles during measurement. Tool has potential applications in mass production; helps ensure proper gap dimensions in assembly of refrigerator and car doors and also used to measure dimensions of components and to verify positional accuracy of components during progressive assembly operations.

Hydraulic Cylinder With an Integral Position Indicator

Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) incorporated within cylinder of hydraulic actuator gives precise readout of position of piston relative to cylinder. LVDT contained completely within actuator. System requires precise positioning and position readout for computer control of model motions. Minimal space available for motion cylinders, and precise, continuous position readout (with no steps or pulses) required. Device provides continuous and accurate position indication of a hydraulic cylinder by means of integral, coaxially mounted LVDT.

Electronic/Hydraulic Level Gage

System for checking levelness of machines and structures requires less time and labor than conventional optical systems. Measures differences in elevation to within 0.002 in. (0.05 mm). Floats at opposite ends of structure determine positions of cores in linear variable-differential transformers. Outputs of LVDT's carried by cables to control console, where displayed to operator as difference in core levels and therfore of ends of structure.
