Langmuir probe measurements of double-layers in a pulsed discharge

Langmuir probe measurements were carried out which confirm the occurrence of double-layers in an argon positive column. Pulsing the discharge current permitted probe measurements to be performed in the presence of the double-layer. Supplementary evidence, obtained from DC and pulsed discharges, indicated that the double-layers formed in the two modes of operation were similar. The double-layers observed were weak and stable; their relation to other classes of double-layers are discussed, and directions for future work are suggested.

A fluid description of plasma double-layers

The space-charge double-layer that forms between two plasmas with different densities and thermal energies was investigated using three progressively realistic models which are treated by fluid theory, and take into account four species of particles: electrons and ions reflected by the double-layer, and electrons and ions transmitted through it. The two plasmas are assumed to be cold, and the self-consistent potential, electric field and space-charge distributions within the double-layer are determined. The effects of thermal velocities are taken into account for the reflected particles, and the modifications to the cold plasma solutions are established. Further modifications due to thermal velocities of the transmitted particles are examined. The applicability of a one dimensional fluid description, rather than plasma kinetic theory, is discussed. Theoretical predictions are compared with double layer potentials and lengths deduced from laboratory and space plasma experiments.

Plasma double-layers produced by ponderomotive force

Non-linear rectification of the RF electric fields excited in a convectively amplifying electron beam-plasma interaction results in a dc electric field, and a corresponding ponderomotive force acting on the charged particles to produce a space-charge separation, i.e. a type of plasma double-layer. This paper analyses the effect, taking into account plasma electron temperature and electron-neutral collisions. To measure such double-layers, an electron beam probe constitutes a convenient non-perturbing diagnostic technique, but great care is required in its calibration. An analysis is presented taking into account significant non-linear effects which had been neglected in previous work. The paper concludes with some preliminary experimental results illustrating the use of the technique in a beam-plasma interaction for which a weak double-layer electric field is predicted.

Laboratory simulation of ionospheric double-layers

A mechanism for double-layer formation in partially- or fully-ionized plasmas is described, founded on beam-plasma interaction: RF growth along the beam excites a rectified, ponderomotive electric field, which in turn causes charge separation. Laboratory studies of the mechanism are described.

Observations of a double-layer in a hot-cathode discharge

The meniscus region of a hot cathode discharge was selected for an analysis of the nonlinear interaction of a convectively amplifying wave with a background plasma. A potential step, resulting from rectification of the wave fields is observed, and it is noted that predicted values for the step are in good agreement with empirical data. Attention is given to the determination of plasma parameters (using a Langmuir probe placed in front of the cathode) in terms of their relation to the pondermotive force.

A fluid description of plasma double-layers

The space-charge double layer forming between two plasmas with different densities and thermal energies is described. The double layer is analyzed using fluid theory. The case of cold particles is treated. Thermal effects for the reflected particles and for the transmitted particles are considered. Emphasis is placed on finding a relationship between the magnitude of the potential step and the parameters characterizing the adjoining plasmas. Qualitative statements are made about the length of the double layer, and a characteristic length useful as a quantitative measure is defined and discussed.

Simulation of auroral double layers

Some basic properties of plasma double layers are deduced from a particle-in-cell computer simulation and related to parallel electric-field structures above the auroral regions. The simulation results on the processes leading to double-layer formation are examined, particularly in relation to the transient stage and double-layer structure and stability. It is concluded that: (1) a large potential difference applied to a finite-length plasma will be concentrated in a shocklike localized region instead of occurring over the entire length of the system; (2) the initial stage in double-layer formation is dominated by a large-potential pulse propagating in the direction of the induced electrostatic drift; (3) the entire potential is dropped over a specific scale length once the double layer has formed; and (4) this scale length is expected to be of the order of 1 km for a double layer above a discrete auroral arc with a potential of 10 kV and the electric-field vector parallel to the magnetic-field vector.

Electrostatic shocks as nonlinear ion acoustic waves

A cold fluid approach is presented which yields exact double-layer solutions that can be used to model electrostatic S-type shocks. Solutions derived from the two-temperature electron model are presented in order to show the range of amplitudes and scale lengths possible for this plasma model and to examine how shock properties depend on orientation of the shock. The dependence of various double-layer quantities on plasma composition is then considered for the cold electron beam model. Double-layer solutions pertinent to describing electrostatic shocks are pointed out.

Continuum models for static and dynamic analysis of repetitive lattices

A simple, rational approach is presented for developing continuum models for large repetitive lattice structures subjected to static and dynamic loadings. The procedure involves introducing kinematic assumptions to reduce the dimensionality of the lattice, and equating the strain and kinetic energies of the continuum model to those of the original lattice structure. The proposed procedure is applied to obtain effective elastic and dynamic characteristics of continuum plate models for double-layered grids. Numerical results are presented of stress and free vibration problems for two double-layered grids. These problems demonstrate the high accuracy of the continuum plate models developed. Also, an assessment is made of different approximations to these models.

Two-dimensional potential double layers and discrete auroras

This paper is concerned with the formation of the acceleration region for electrons which produce the visible auroral arc and with the formation of the inverted V precipitation region. The former is embedded in the latter, and both are associated with field-aligned current sheets carried by plasma sheet electrons. It is shown that an electron current sheet driven from the plasma sheet into the ionosphere leads to the formation of a two-dimensional potential double layer. For a current sheet of a thickness less than the proton gyrodiameter solutions are obtained in which the field-aligned potential drop is distributed over a length much greater than the Debye length. For a current sheet of a thickness much greater than the proton gyrodiameter solutions are obtained in which the potential drop is confined to a distance on the order of the Debye length. The electric field in the two-dimensional double-layer model is the zeroth-order field inherent to the current sheet configuration, in contrast to those models in which the electric field is attributed to the first-order field due to current instabilities or turbulences. The maximum potential in the two-dimensional double-layer models is on the order of the thermal energy of plasma sheet protons, which ranges from 1 to 10 keV.

Venus' spectroscopic phase variation - Implications of the Mariner 10 photographs

The recent ultraviolet photographs of Venus by Mariner 10 have shown an irregular cloud structure. There is an apparent tendency for clearing along a wide equatorial band more or less centered on the subsolar point. This synoptic picture is in marked contrast to the uniform cloud cover conventionally used in model calculations of the variation with phase of CO2 absorption bands. To illustrate the consequences of subsolar weakening of CO2 absorption, a mathematically simple (but realistically naive) model is used. Two conclusions are reached: (1) efforts to distinguish between single- and double-layer models for the clouds from spectroscopic data alone are not merely ambiguous (as argued earlier by Chamberlain and Smith); with present data they are hopeless; (2) the decrease in the CO2 absorption close to full phase, as reported by Young et al., could result entirely from an equatorial darkening that is relatively inconsequential at the crescent phase and increasingly predominant for fuller phases.

Micrometeorite penetration effects in gold foil

Penetration structures revealed by a Skylab experiment dealing with exposure of single and double layers of 500-800 A thick gold foil to micrometeorites are examined. Examination of all double-layered gold foils revealed that particles producing holes of any type greater than 5 microns in diameter in the first foil break up into many fragments which in turn produce many more holes in the second foil. Evidence of an original particle is not found on any stainless steel plate below the foils, except in one instance. A precise relationship between the size of the event and the mass of the particle producing it could not be determined due to the extreme morphological variety in penetration effects. Fluxes from gold foil and crater experiments are briefly discussed.

Double metalization for VLSI

Postsintering process increases yield of double-layer metal conductors to almost 100 percent. When wafers containing double-metalized chips are sintered, metal layers react with oxide film remaining in insulation layer holes, breaking it up so that it no longer impedes electric current. Cooling also mechanically disrupts oxide film.
