Dynamic Balancing Of Turbomachinery Shafts And Rotors

Method for dynamic balancing of turbomachinery shafts and rotors developed with view toward reducing time spent in balancing process. Improved method based on existing dynamic-balancing techniques and equipment, incorporating use of balancing arbor, which is mandrel duplicating mounting geometry and dynamic-balance properties of shaft balanced. Once shaft balanced, not necessary to disassemble machinery and/or shaft completely and rebalance shaft when replacing rotor on shaft. Instead, one balances replacement rotor on balancing arbor, then installs balanced rotor on shaft.

An applicational process for dynamic balancing of turbomachinery shafting

The NASA Lewis Research Center has developed and implemented a time-efficient methodology for dynamically balancing turbomachinery shafting. This methodology minimizes costly facility downtime by using a balancing arbor (mandrel) that simulates the turbomachinery (rig) shafting. The need for precision dynamic balancing of turbomachinery shafting and for a dynamic balancing methodology is discussed in detail. Additionally, the inherent problems (and their causes and effects) associated with unbalanced turbomachinery shafting as a function of increasing shaft rotational speeds are discussed. Included are the design criteria concerning rotor weight differentials for rotors made of different materials that have similar parameters and shafting. The balancing methodology for applications where rotor replaceability is a requirement is also covered. This report is intended for use as a reference when designing, fabricating, and troubleshooting turbomachinery shafting.

Cosmic-ray distribution and the dynamic balance in the Large Magellanic Cloud

The cosmic-ray energy density distribution for the LMC is calculated quantitatively based on the concept of dynamic balance and a scale of coupling between the cosmic rays and matter in a range allowed by present observations. Based on the very slowly varying ratio of the cosmic-ray electron to nucleon energy density ratio with relevant local galactic conditions and the close similarities to the galaxy, the cosmic-ray nucleon density distribution in the LMC is also determined from cosmic-ray electron density distribution deduced from synchrotron radiation measurements in a manner consistent with dynamic balance. It is seen that within uncertainties there is quantitative agreement between the two for a cosmic-ray, matter coupling scale of about 2.5 kiloparsecs both in terms of magnitude and distribution, thus supporting both the concept of dynamic balance and the galactic origin of the bulk of cosmic rays. Future gamma-ray astronomy measurement above 100 MeV will be able to provide a test of this cosmic-ray density distribution for the LMC.

Dynamic balance control in elders: gait initiation assessment as a screening tool

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether measurements of center of gravity-center of pressure separation (CG-CP moment arm) during gait initiation can differentiate healthy from disabled subjects with sufficient specificity and sensitivity to be useful as a screening test for dynamic balance in elderly patients. SUBJECTS: Three groups of elderly subjects (age, 74.97+/-6.56 yrs): healthy elders (HE, n = 21), disabled elders (DE, n = 20), and elders with vestibular hypofunction (VH, n = 18). DESIGN: Cross-sectional, intact-groups research design. Peak CG-CP moment arm measures how far the subject will tolerate the whole-body CG to deviate from the ground reaction force's CP; it represents dynamic balance control. Screening test cutoff points at 16 to 18 cm peak CG-CP moment arm predicted group membership. RESULTS: The magnitude of peak CG-CP moment arm was significantly greater in HE than in DE and VH subjects (p<.01) and was not different between the DE and VH groups. The peak CG-CP moment arm occurred at the end of single stance phase in all groups. As a screening test, the peak moment arm has greater than 50% sensitivity and specificity to discriminate the HE group from the DE and VH groups with peak CG-CP moment arm cutoff points between 16 and 18 cm. CONCLUSIONS: Examining dynamic balance through the use of the CG-CP moment arm during single stance in gait initiation discriminates between nondisabled and disabled older persons and warrants further investigation as a potential tool to identify people with balance dysfunction.

Inverse Force Determination on a Small Scale Launch Vehicle Model Using a Dynamic Balance

A launch vehicle can experience large unsteady aerodynamic forces in the transonic regime that, while usually only lasting for tens of seconds during launch, could be devastating if structural components and electronic hardware are not designed to account for them. These aerodynamic loads are difficult to experimentally measure and even harder to computationally estimate. The current method for estimating buffet loads is through the use of a few hundred unsteady pressure transducers and wind tunnel test. Even with a large number of point measurements, the computed integrated load is not an accurate enough representation of the total load caused by buffeting. This paper discusses an attempt at using a dynamic balance to experimentally determine buffet loads on a generic scale hammer head launch vehicle model tested at NASA Ames Research Center's 11' x 11' transonic wind tunnel. To use a dynamic balance, the structural characteristics of the model needed to be identified so that the natural modal response could be and removed from the aerodynamic forces. A finite element model was created on a simplified version of the model to evaluate the natural modes of the balance flexures, assist in model design, and to compare to experimental data. Several modal tests were conducted on the model in two different configurations to check for non-linearity, and to estimate the dynamic characteristics of the model. The experimental results were used in an inverse force determination technique with a psuedo inverse frequency response function. Due to the non linearity, the model not being axisymmetric, and inconsistent data between the two shake tests from different mounting configuration, it was difficult to create a frequency response matrix that satisfied all input and output conditions for wind tunnel configuration to accurately predict unsteady aerodynamic loads.

Proposed method of rotary dynamic balancing by laser

Laser method, where high energies of monochromatic light can be precisely collimated to perform welding and machining processes, is proposed for rotary dynamic balancing. The unbalance, as detected with the velocity pickup, would trigger the laser system which would emit high energy pulses directed at the heavy side of the component.

Cosmic rays and the dynamic balance in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Present and future measurement of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) particularly in the radio and high energy gamma ray range offer the possibility of understanding the density and distribution of the cosmic rays in a galaxy other than our own and the role that they play in galactic dynamic balance. After a study of the consistency of the measurements and interpretation of the synchrotron radiation from our own galaxy, the cosmic ray distribution for the LMC is calculated under the assumption that the cosmic ray nucleon to electron ratio is the same and the relation to the magnetic fields are the same, although the implications of alternatives are discussed. It is seen that the cosmic ray density level appears to be similar to that in our own galaxy, but varying in position in a manner generally consistent with the concept of correlation with the matter on a broad scale.

Balancing Dynamic Strength of Spur Gears Operated at Extended Center Distance

This paper presents an analytical study on using hob offset to balance the dynamic tooth strength of spur gears operated at a center distance greater than the standard value. This study is an extension of a static study by Mabie and others. The study was limited to the offset values that assure the pinion and gear teeth will neither be undercut nor become pointed. The analysis presented in this paper was performed using DANST-PC, a new version of the NASA gear dynamics code. The operating speed of the transmission influences the amount of hob offset required to equalize the dynamic stresses in the pinion and gear. The optimum hob offset for the pinion was found to vary within a small range as the speed changes. The optimum value is generally greater than the optimum value found by static procedures. For gears that must operate over a wide range of speeds, an average offset value may be used.

Consideration of Dynamical Balances

The quasi-balance of extra-tropical tropospheric dynamics is a fundamental aspect of nature. If an atmospheric analysis does not reflect such balance sufficiently well, the subsequent forecast will exhibit unrealistic behavior associated with spurious fast-propagating gravity waves. Even if these eventually damp, they can create poor background fields for a subsequent analysis or interact with moist physics to create spurious precipitation. The nature of this problem will be described along with the reasons for atmospheric balance and techniques for mitigating imbalances. Attention will be focused on fundamental issues rather than on recipes for various techniques.

Deciphering the Dynamic Balance Between Solvation Strength and Polysulfides Reaction Heterogeneity in Practical Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Achieving stable interfacial chemistry in lithium–sulfur batteries under practical conditions remains a key barrier to commercialization. Here, we demonstrate that interfacial dynamics can be effectively regulated by coupling solvation-power control with intrinsic heterogeneity of sulfur redox chemistry through the introduction of a weakly solvating fluorinated cosolvent, LIB 1200ET (1200ET). Compared with conventional fluorinated ethers, 1200ET efficiently shifts Li + solvation environment toward a more non-coordinated configuration at low volume fractions, enabling substantial solvation modulation without significantly impairing sulfur redox kinetics. This solvation transition weakens Li + –solvent interactions while strengthening Li + –anion and Li + –lithium polysulfide (LPS) coordination, suppressing LPS solubility and promoting reconstruction of solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI). Regulated LPS chemistry, together with 1200ET, leads to formation of a S 4+ -rich, LiF-reinforced SEI with enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. Spatially resolved sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on pouch cells reveals pronounced current-density-dependent chemical heterogeneity, distinguishing kinetically dominated and solvation-controlled regions. Under practical conditions (3.7 mg cm −2 sulfur loading, E/S = 6 µL mg −1 ), a single-layer pouch cell delivers 527 mAh g −1 over 200 cycles at C/3, while an Ah-level multilayer pouch cell achieves an energy density of 358 Wh kg −1 . These results establish non-coordinating cosolvent-driven solvation engineering as a scalable strategy for practical Li–S batteries.

Biomass Burning and Water Balance Dynamics in the Lake Chad Basin in Africa

The present study investigates the effect of biomass burning on the water cycle using a case study of the Chari-Logone Catchment of Lake Chad Basin. The Chari-Logone catchment was selected since it supplies over 90% of the water input to the Lake, which is the largest basin in the NSSA. Two water balance simulations, one considering burning and one without, were compared from the years 2003 to 2011. For a more comprehensive assessment of the effects of burning, albedo change, which has been shown to have a significant impact on a number of environmental factors, was used as a model input for calculating potential evapotranspiration. Analysis of the burning scenario show that burning grassland, which composes almost 75% of Chari-Logone total land cover, causes increased ET and runoff during winter months. Recent studies have demonstrated the increasing trend in LCB of converting shrubland, grassland, and wetlands to cropland. This change from grassland to cropland has the potential of decreasing water available to water bodies during the winter. All vegetative classes in a burning scenario showed a decrease in ET during the wet season, supporting the idea that, with increased burning, there would be a severe decrease of precipitation.
