Electrohydrodynamic Enabled Electrochemical Membrane Dehumidifier for Separate Sensible and Latent Cooling

In hot and humid parts of the world, air conditioning is a necessity for an adequate standard of living. Cooling and heating represent one-third of building energy consumption. When cooling humid air, a substantial amount of the cooling energy is absorbed by water vapor condensation. The dehumidification cooling load is referred to as the latent cooling load and the dry bulb cooling load is referred to as the sensible cooling load. In most residential applications, the total cooling load is processed by a vapor compression cycle. Processing the latent load separately would not only reduce energy consumption. It would also reduce the required refrigeration capacity. Refrigerants often have adverse ecological impacts, contributing to the greenhouse effect and depletion of the ozone layer. Reduction of the cooling capacity in a system could reduce the amount of refrigerant charge required.

Field Validation of Packaged RAD-AC HVAC System: Efficiency and Load Shifting via Electrochemical Regeneration of Liquid Desiccants

In this project, Mojave and SRI have demonstrated field validation and load shifting of liquid desiccant air conditioning systems with two liquid desiccant dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) air conditioner units – one employing traditional thermal desiccant regeneration and the other utilizing Mojave’s novel electrochemical desiccant regeneration technology based on Redox Assisted electrodialysis. The Redox Assisted Dehumidification Air Conditioning (RAD-AC) technology is further developed and validated in this work to demonstrate an Integrated Seasonal Moisture Removal Efficiency (ISMRE) > 5.0 kg/kWh and shifting of ≥ 10% electric load in ≤ 72 hours. Furthermore, the longevity and durability of Mojave’s liquid desiccant air conditioning technology is validated in field testing of the thermally regenerated unit, with the unit demonstrating operation with >90% uptime while experiencing an efficiency degradation of < 10% during a testing campaign of over 5400 hours.

Cooling systems having an integrated ionic liquid salt dehumidification system

A cooling systems utilizes an organic ionic salt composition for dehumidification of an airflow. The organic ionic salt composition absorbs moisture from an inlet airflow to produce an outlet airflow with a reduce moisture from that of the inlet airflow. The organic ionic salt composition may be regenerated, wherein the absorbed moisture is expelled by heating with a heating device. The heating device may be an electrochemical heating device, such as a fuel cell, an electrochemical metal hydride heating device, an electrochemical heat pump or compressor, or a condenser of a refrigerant cycle, which may utilize an electrochemical pump or compressor. The efficiency of the cooling system may be increased by utilization of the waste heat the cooling system. The organic ionic salt composition may circulate back and forth or in a loop between a conditioner, where it absorbs moisture, to a regenerator, where moisture is desorbed by heating.
