Future energy infrastructure, energy platform and energy storage

Today fossil energy dominates energy consumption across the world. There has been an increasing momentum to reduce fossil energy consumption and increase renewable energy utilization to more than 70%. Such high penetrations of distributed renewable resources bring large uncertainty and complexity that cannot be easily handled by the current infrastructure. For the last two decades, telecommunication industry has gone through a similar transition from centralized to distributed systems, and more recently to platform approaches, which become the corner stone of today’s vibrant platform economy. Based on telecommunication history, we believe that a platform-based approach, called the energy platform, is a viable solution for addressing the renewable energy challenges. The energy platform consists of an array of computational algorithms, sensing and control technologies for key industry, energy generators and users to jointly manage and control the complex energy infrastructure. It includes the following key components: (1) the hardware and software to generate, store, control and transmit electricity/data (the energy cloud), (2) the digital platforms and tools for key energy producers, digital, service and communication industry to share the assets, participate in and manage the complex infrastructure, and for customers to participate in energy transactions, (3) the transaction platform for new service and business models. Additionally, the energy platform requires breakthroughs in large scale energy storage and many other areas including efficient power electronics, sensors and controls, new mathematical and computational tools, and deep integration of energy technologies and information sciences to control and stabilize such complex chaotic systems.

BETO 2021 Peer Review - Cyanobacteria Photosynthetic Energy Platform (1.3.4.301)

Cyanobacteria Photosynthetic Energy Platform (WBS 1.3.4.301) The primary challenge in algal technology is low energy conversion efficiency, currently up to a few percentages from photon energy to biomass energy. Most incoming solar energy is lost in the processes of photosynthesis, through mechanisms that are not fully understood. There is large room for improvement. This project develops cyanobacteria genetic tools to improve photosynthetic efficiency and biomass productivity through manipulation of energy regulation mechanisms. Increasing algal biomass productivity by 20% translates to $2 reduction of MFSP. Genetic manipulation is an essential tool in understanding and improving algal productivity. While genetic manipulation is challenging for most algae, model cyanobacteria, with in-house mutant library and genetic engineering toolboxes, allow for rapid hypothesis testing and transfer of lessons to other cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae. We developed Energome (energy-ome) concept to guide novel engineering strategies and unleash unused potential in photosynthesis. Energome consists of cellular energy management mechanisms. For example, we found that cyanobacteria use futile cycles around glycogen and sucrose to dissipate ATP. By genetic modification, the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis 6803 showed higher energy levels, increased photosynthetic capacity, and 20% improvement in biomass yield in simulated outdoor light conditions.

A System Level Comparative Study of SecondarySide Rectifiers for UAV Wireless Power Transfer in High-Altitude Airborne Energy Platforms

Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) must satisfy stringent design requirements to ensure reliable operation under constraints related to efficiency, thermal performance, altitude, weight, and reliability, particularly in airborne and high-altitude environments. Thermal management becomes increasingly challenging at higher altitudes due to reduced air density, while reliability is strongly affected by the number and complexity of active components. The weight and compactness of secondary-side rectifiers directly impact UAV flight endurance and system integration, influencing energy consumption and payload allocation. These factors collectively define the practical feasibility of UAV WPT systems and guide rectifier topology selection. This paper presents a comparative and experimentally validated evaluation framework for secondary-side rectifiers under UAV-specific constraints. Three representative rectifier architectures are analyzed using component-based assessment of weight, thermal behavior, and reliability, together with experimental efficiency measurements obtained from a 1 kW WPT prototype. The results show that the single-switch active rectifier achieves the highest peak efficiency of approximately 93.2% and an overall efficiency of 91%, while also offering advantages in weight and reliability. The findings demonstrate how constraint-oriented analysis, combined with experimental validation, enables informed selection of secondary-side rectifiers for UAV wireless power transfer applications, including emerging airborne and high-altitude platforms.

WHISPER: Wireless Home Identification and Sensing Platform for Energy Reduction

Many regions of the world benefit from heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems to provide productive, comfortable, and healthy indoor environments, which are enabled by automatic building controls. Due to climate change, population growth, and industrialization, HVAC use is globally on the rise. Unfortunately, these systems often operate in a continuous fashion without regard to actual human presence, leading to unnecessary energy consumption. As a result, the heating, ventilation, and cooling of unoccupied building spaces makes a substantial contribution to the harmful environmental impacts associated with carbon-based electric power generation, which is important to remedy. For our modern electric power system, transitioning to low-carbon renewable energy is facilitated by integration with distributed energy resources. Automatic engagement between the grid and consumers will be necessary to enable a clean yet stable electric grid, when integrating these variable and uncertain renewable energy sources. We present the WHISPER (Wireless Home Identification and Sensing Platform for Energy Reduction) system to address the energy and power demand triggered by human presence in homes. The presented system includes a maintenance-free and privacy-preserving human occupancy detection system wherein a local wireless network of battery-free environmental, acoustic energy, and image sensors are deployed to monitor homes, record empirical data for a range of monitored modalities, and transmit it to a base station. Several machine learning algorithms are implemented at the base station to infer human presence based on the received data, harnessing a hierarchical sensor fusion algorithm. Results from the prototype system demonstrate an accuracy in human presence detection in excess of 95%; ongoing commercialization efforts suggest approximately 99% accuracy. Using machine learning, WHISPER enables various applications based on its binary occupancy prediction, allowing situation-specific controls targeted at both personalized smart home and electric grid modernization opportunities.

Day-ahead continuous double auction-based peer-to-peer energy trading platform incorporating trading losses and network utilisation fee

Integration of distributed energy resources, such as photovoltaic solar (PV), introduces new opportunities to establish local energy market frameworks to improve renewable energy utilisation in residential sectors. Such peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading refers to a local market structure where customers (and prosumers) interact to share excess PV generation to enhance the individual and community social welfare. In this work, a day-ahead continuous double auction (CDA)-based P2P market structure considering network losses and network utilisation fees was designed. Day-ahead PV energy is modelled using fractional integral polynomials and the output is forecasted using an autoregressive integrated moving average model for each market interval. Based on the customer load and excess PV energy, the CDA market is cleared using a bid/ask matching mechanism. The performance of the P2P market was evaluated by computing different welfare metrics while analysing the effect of network constraints. The results show that the designed CDA-based P2P market structure increases the social welfare of all participants by an average of 17.75% compared to the baseline for the presented cases. Moreover, the impact of the forecasting error between the day-ahead and real-time market was also quantified.

Development of a Sizing and Modeling Platform for District Energy Systems with Geothermal Heat Pumps

Existing tools for community or urban scale energy system modeling and simulation are often limited in their capabilities and require expert-level modeling proficiency to develop system models. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an integrated sizing and modeling platform for district energy systems with geothermal heat pumps. The proposed platform takes in geometric and non-geometric user inputs related to the buildings, borefield, and district energy loop. Then, the platform sizes the geothermal heat exchanger, generates a corresponding district energy system model, and runs an annual simulation automatically. We validated the simulation performance of the borefield in our tool against EnergyPlus. A case study is provided in this paper to demonstrate the workflow and simulation result plausibility of the proposed platform.
