Analysis of Data in Accordance with Space Flight Mission Environmental Requirements

The Environmental Assurance Program sets forth standards to ensure that all flight hardware is compatible with the environments that will be encountered during a spacecraft mission. It outlines the design, test and analysis, and risk control standards for the mission and certifies that it will survive in any external or self-induced environments that the spacecraft may experience. The Environmental Requirements Document (ERD) is the most important document in the Environmental Assurance Program, providing the design and test requirements for the project's flight system, subsystems, assemblies, and instruments. This summer's project was to assist Environmental Requirements Engineers (ERE's) in completing the Environmental Assurance Program Summary Report for both the Juno Project and Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Project. The Summary Report is a document summarizing the environmental tests and analyses of each spacecraft at both the assembly and system level. It compiles a source of all relevant information such as waivers and Problem/Failure Reports (PFRs) into a single report for easy reference of how well the spacecraft met the requirements of the project.

Environmental requirements for flat plate photovoltaic modules for terrestrial applications

The environmental test requirements that have been developed for flat plate modules purchased through Department of Energy funding are described. Concurrent with the selection of the initial qualification tests from space program experience - temperature cycling and humidity - surveys of existing photovoltaic systems in the field revealed that arrays were experiencing the following failure modes: interconnect breakage, delamination, and electrical termination corrosion. These coupled with application-dependent considerations led to the development of additional qualification tests, such as cyclic pressure loading, warped mounting surface, and hail. Rationale for the selection of tests, their levels and durations is described. Comparisons between field-observed degradation and test-induced degradation show a positive correlation with some of the observed field effects. Also, the tests are proving useful for detecting design, process, and workmanship deficiencies. The status of study efforts for the development of environmental requirements for field-related problems is reviewed.

Environmental Requirements and Verification for NASA’s Planned Europa Clipper

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and its partner are planning a mission to explore an icy moon of Jupiter, Europa. The objective of the planned Europa Clipper mission is to gain insight into the key ingredients for this potentially habitable world. This mission will conduct investigations using a suite of instruments that includes a set of five remote sensing instruments, four in-situ fields and particles instruments, and a two-channel ice-penetrating radar. Among its science objectives are to produce high-resolution images of Europa's surface, determine its composition, look for signs of recent or ongoing activity, measure the thickness of the ice shell, search for subsurface lakes, and determine the depth and salinity of Europa's ocean. Europa Clipper is expected to encounter a very challenging environment, particularly in radiation. This paper provides a comprehensive description of the challenging environments and the environmental requirements that are levied onto the Europa Clipper system design. The mitigations activities being conducted or planned to ensure compliance with the severe environments will be described. Also discussed will be how the environmental requirements are verified and at which level of integration to ensure mission success.

Evolution of the NISAR Feed Antenna Design due to Environmental Requirements

NISAR (NASA ISRO SAR, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Indian Space Research Organization, Synthetic Aperture Radar) is an Earth science project currently in its final development phases at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and at ISRO. Due for launch in 2023 it will assess how our planet changes over time by measuring differences in the Earth’s solid surface due to factors like climate change, movement and melting of glaciers, earthquakes, land-slides, deforestation, agriculture and others. The enabling instrument for this mission is a dual band radar (L-Band and S-Band) that feeds a 12m deployable mesh reflector. Given the extreme accuracy needed to perform these measurements from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) some of the most stringent requirements were pushed onto the antenna subsystem to control phase and gain stability over time. In this paper we describe how environmental requirements affected the antenna design and what techniques were used to meet these requirements.

Impact of Lost Generation at the Glen Canyon Powerplant due to the Environmental Requirements for the Years 2024 to 2027

This report was prepared by Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in support of an economic and financial analysis conducted for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) of the loss in Glen Canyon power generation due to the environmental requirements for the years 2024 to 2027. WAPA markets electricity produced at hydroelectric facilities operated by the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation). The facilities known collectively as the Salt Lake City Area Integrated Projects (SLCA/IP) include dams equipped for power generation on the Colorado, Green, Gunnison, and Rio Grande rivers and on Plateau Creek in the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

Engineering report. Part 2: NASA wheel and brake material tradeoff study for space shuttle type environmental requirements

The study included material selection and trade-off for the structural components of the wheel and brake optimizing weight vs cost and feasibility for the space shuttle type application. Analytical methods were used to determine section thickness for various materials, and a table was constructed showing weight vs. cost trade-off. The wheel and brake were further optimized by considering design philosophies that deviate from standard aircraft specifications, and designs that best utilize the materials being considered.
