Unitary-matrix models as exactly solvable string theories

Exact differential equations are presently found for the scaling functions of models of unitary matrices which are solved in a double-scaling limit, using orthogonal polynomials on a circle. For the case of the simplest, k = 1 model, the Painleve II equation with constant 0 is obtained; possible nonperturbative phase transitions exist for these models. Equations are presented for k = 2 and 3, and discussed with a view to asymptotic behavior.

An exactly solvable model for calculating critical misfit and thickness in epitaxial superlattices - Layers of equal elastic constants and thicknesses

A parabolic interaction potential has been used to develop a model for calculating the misfit dislocation (MD) energy in the case of a superlattice of alternating layers of materials with equal elastic constants and thicknesses. The model, which is believed to be a good one for small misfits and to have some merit for covalent bonded materials, is exactly solvable for the critical thickness above which it is energetically favorable to lose coherency by the introduction of MDs into the interfaces. It was found, for a given misfit f, that the critical thickness for epitaxial superlattices free from their substrate is somewhat more than four times that for a single epilayer on a thick substrate. Furthermore, the critical thickness varies almost inversely with misfit to the power 1.22 when Poisson's ratio is 1/3. It was also shown that the critical misfit f(c) obtained by equating maximal misfit strain and MD energies is a significant overestimate of f(c). The results for a superlattice are compared with those of a thin layer on a thick substrate.

Some exactly solvable models of thick disk and radio jets near the black hole

The exact solution of the relativistic Euler's equation in the black hole geometry is obtained by identifying surfaces of constant angular momentum with the surfaces of constant angular velocity for the azimuthal component. It is shown that the solution gives rise to thick disks and cosmic jets for suitable choices of the physical parameters.

An exactly solvable model for calculating critical misfit and thickness in epitaxial superlattices. II - Layers of unequal elastic constants and thicknesses

The theoretical model developed by van der Merwe and Jesser (1988) is extended to permit the exact determination of the critical misfit and critical thickness of an epitaxially grown superlattice made up of layers with differing elastic constants and thicknesses. Lateral force balances are maintained by means of an explicit relationship between the homogeneous misfit strains and the thicknesses and moduli. A number of simplifying approximations are introduced, and sample numerical results are presented in graphs.

Phase transitions in fermionic systems with many-body interaction

A linearized version of the Hartree-Fock method is used as a probe to investigate phase transitions in fermionic systems with many-body interactions. An application to a new exactly solvable model which includes two- and three-body forces is shown.

Galilean covariant harmonic oscillator

A Galilean covariant approach to classical mechanics of a single particle is described. Within the proposed formalism, all non-covariant force laws defining acting forces which become to be defined covariantly by some differential equations are rejected. Such an approach leads out of the standard classical mechanics and gives an example of non-Newtonian mechanics. It is shown that the exactly solvable linear system of differential equations defining forces contains the Galilean covariant description of harmonic oscillator as its particular case. Additionally, it is demonstrated that in Galilean covariant classical mechanics the validity of the second Newton law of dynamics implies the Hooke law and vice versa. It is shown that the kinetic and total energies transform differently with respect to the Galilean transformations.

Exact, E = 0, classical and quantum solutions for general power-law oscillators

For zero energy, E = 0, we derive exact, classical and quantum solutions for all power-law oscillators with potentials V(r) = -gamma/r(exp nu), gamma greater than 0 and -infinity less than nu less than infinity. When the angular momentum is non-zero, these solutions lead to the classical orbits (p(t) = (cos mu(phi(t) - phi(sub 0)t))(exp 1/mu) with mu = nu/2 - 1 does not equal 0. For nu greater than 2, the orbits are bound and go through the origin. We calculate the periods and precessions of these bound orbits, and graph a number of specific examples. The unbound orbits are also discussed in detail. Quantum mechanically, this system is also exactly solvable. We find that when nu is greater than 2 the solutions are normalizable (bound), as in the classical case. Further, there are normalizable discrete, yet unbound, states. They correspond to unbound classical particles which reach infinity in a finite time. Finally, the number of space dimensions of the system can determine whether or not an E = 0 state is bound. These and other interesting comparisons to the classical system will be discussed.

A possible generalization of the harmonic oscillator potential

A four-parameter potential is analyzed, which contains the three-dimensional harmonic oscillator as a special case. This potential is exactly solvable and retains several characteristics of the harmonic oscillator, and also of the Coulomb problem. The possibility of similar generalizations of other potentials is also pointed out.

The Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau oscillator

In view of current interest in relativistic spin-one systems and the recent work on the Dirac Oscillator, we introduce the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) equation obtained by using an external potential linear in r. Since, in the non-relativistic limit, the spin 1 representation leads to a harmonic oscillator with a spin-orbit coupling of the Thomas form, we call the equation the DKP oscillator. This oscillator is a relativistic generalization of the quantum harmonic oscillator for scalar and vector bosons. We show that it conserves total angular momentum and that it is exactly solvable. We calculate and discuss the eigenspectrum of the DKP oscillator in the spin 1 representation.

There aren't Non-Standard Solutions for the Braid Group Representations of the QYBE Associated with 10-D Representations of SU(4)

It is well known that the quantum Yang-Baxter equations (QYBE) play an important role in various theoretical and mathematical physics, such as completely integrable system in (1 + 1)-dimensions, exactly solvable models in statistical mechanics, the quantum inverse scattering method and the conformal field theories in 2-dimensions. Recently, much remarkable progress has been made in constructing the solutions of the QYBE associated with the representations of lie algebras. It is shown that for some cases except the standard solutions, there also exist new solutions, but the others have not non-standard solutions. In this paper by employing the weight conservation and the diagrammatic techniques we show that the solution associated with the 10-D representations of SU (4) are standard alone.

Poincare-Lighthill and linear-time-scales methods for linear perturbation problems.

For a class of multidimensional linear perturbation problems of considerable significance in applications, the Poincare-Lighthill technique is shown to give first-order expansion terms which grow unbounded relative to the leading term (secular behavior), while the method of linear time scales leads to well-behaved expansion terms. A solvable example is introduced for comparison with the exact solution.

Decoherence and Exponential Law: A Solvable Model

We analyze a modified version of the 'AgBr' Hamiltonian, solve exactly the equations of motion in terms of SU(2) coherent states, and study the weak-coupling, macroscopic limit of the model, obtaining an exponential behavior at all times. The asymptotic dominance of the exponential behavior is representative of a purely stochastic evolution and can be derived quantum mechanically in the so-called van Hove's limit (which is a weak-coupling, macroscopic limit). At the same time, a temporal behavior of the exponential type, yielding a 'probability dissipation' is closely related to dephasing ('decoherence') effects and one can expect a close connection with a dissipative and irreversible behavior. We stress the central relevance of the problem of dissipation to the quantum measurement theory and to the general topic of decoherence.

A class of finite dimensional optimal nonlinear estimators

Finite dimensional optimal nonlinear state estimators are derived for bilinear systems evolving on nilpotent and solvable Lie groups. These results are extended to other classes of systems involving polynomial nonlinearities. The concepts of exact differentials and path-independent integrals are used to derive optimal finite dimensional estimators for a further class of nonlinear systems.

Solvability condition for needle crystals at large undercooling in a nonlocal model of solidification

It is explicitly shown that, in a realistic model of diffusion-controlled dendritic solidification, Ivantsov's continuous family of steady-state needle crystals is destroyed by the addition of surface tension. The starting point is in the exact integro-differential equation for the one-sided model, in two dimensions, in a moving frame of reference. In the limit of large undercooling, where the range of the diffusion field is much smaller than the radius of curvature of the tip of the needle, this problem is reduced to a linear, inhomogeneous differential equation of infinite order. A solvability condition for this equation is derived and it is shown that solutions cease to exist for arbitrarily small but finite isotropic surface tension.

Demonstration of Detection and Ranging Using Solvable Chaos

Acoustic experiments demonstrate a novel approach to ranging and detection that exploits the properties of a solvable chaotic oscillator. This nonlinear oscillator includes an ordinary differential equation and a discrete switching condition. The chaotic waveform generated by this hybrid system is used as the transmitted waveform. The oscillator admits an exact analytic solution that can be written as the linear convolution of binary symbols and a single basis function. This linear representation enables coherent reception using a simple analog matched filter and without need for digital sampling or signal processing. An audio frequency implementation of the transmitter and receiver is described. Successful acoustic ranging measurements are presented to demonstrate the viability of the approach.

An exact algebraic solution of the infimum in H-infinity optimization with output feedback

This paper presents a simple and noniterative procedure for the computation of the exact value of the infimum in the standard H-infinity-optimal control with output feedback. The problem formulation is general and does not place any restrictions on the direct feedthrough terms between the control input and the controlled output variables, and between the disturbance input and the measurement output variables. The method is applicable to systems that satisfy (1) the transfer function from the control input to the controlled output is right-invertible and has no invariant zeros on the j(w) axis and, (2) the transfer function from the disturbance to the measurement output is left-invertible and has no invariant zeros on the j(w) axis. A set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of H-infinity-almost disturbance decoupling problem via measurement feedback with internal stability is also given.
