T&D LIBRA: Simulation Framework for Transmission and Distribution Load and IBR Assessment

This paper introduces T&D LIBRA, a HELICS-based dynamic co-simulation framework designed for transmission and distribution (T&D) load and inverter-based resource assessment. This framework is designed to model interactions between single-phase induction motors (i.e., Motor-D), distributed energy resources (DERs) and the transmission network, emphasizing system stability during fault conditions. The primary objective of this research is to study the fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) behavior of the T&D networks using the co-simulation framework and to compare the results with conventional PSS/E only simulations. Simulations are validated using T&D co-simulations with a single distribution node and the IEEE 123-bus distribution test case. The co-simulation results demonstrate the value of using T&D co-simulations to capture motor stalling, DER tripping and other sources of voltage diversity on distribution networks.

FIDVR Capability of Hybrid Grid-Forming PV Power Plants During Feeder Restoration

Grid-forming inverters must optimally transfer power from dc-coupled photovoltaic arrays and batteries into an ac grid. Further, they must be able to restore single-phase induction motors (SPIMs) and withstand fault-induced delayed voltage-recovery (FIDVR) events. These resilience and reliability challenges are addressed here by: (i) engineering a controller to optimally operate dc-coupled hybrid resources; (ii) modeling residential air-conditioning compressors for restoration/FIDVR studies; and (iii) analyzing SPIM thermal-relay performance under limited inverter currents and designing an electronic protection for stalled SPIMs. Furthermore, these contributions are demonstrated via electromagnetic-transient simulations and can be helpful to understand recommendations by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

Transmission-and-Distribution Dynamic Co-simulation Framework for Distributed Energy Resource Frequency Response

The rapid deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution networks has made it challenging to balance the transmission system and stabilize frequency. DERs have the ability to provide frequency regulation services; however, existing frequency dynamic simulation tools - which were developed mainly for the transmission system - lack the capability to simulate distribution network dynamics with high penetrations of DERs. Although electromagnetic transient simulation tools can simulate distribution network dynamics, the computation efficiency limits their use for large-scale transmission-and-distribution (T&D) co-simulation. This paper presents an efficient open-source T&D dynamic co-simulation framework for DER frequency response based on the HELICS platform and off-the-shelf T&D simulators. The challenge of synchronizing the simulation time between the transmission network and the DERs in the distribution network is solved through the detailed modeling of DERs in frequency dynamic models while DER power flow models are also preserved in the distribution networks, thereby respecting local voltage constraints when dispatching DER power for frequency response. DER frequency response (primary and secondary) is simulated in case studies to validate the proposed framework. Last, the accuracy of the proposed co-simulation model is benchmarked, and a large T&D system simulation (2k transmission and 1M distribution nodes) is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall framework.
