Materials - Fiber composites.

Fiber composite materials, their properties, their state of technical advancement, and the plans underway to further the development and application of these materials for efficient flight structures are reviewed. It is considered that the costs of composite materials will drop sharply as the volume and manufacturing expertise is increased. The tailorability of structural elements and unique applications requiring high stiffness seem to be particularly attractive features. A good measure of the state of the technology is the sophistication of the structures being built and flown. Several examples are cited.

Development and computer implementation of design/analysis techniques for multilayered composite structures. Probabilistic fiber composite micromechanics

Probabilistic composite micromechanics methods are developed that simulate expected uncertainties in unidirectional fiber composite properties. These methods are in the form of computational procedures using Monte Carlo simulation. The variables in which uncertainties are accounted for include constituent and void volume ratios, constituent elastic properties and strengths, and fiber misalignment. A graphite/epoxy unidirectional composite (ply) is studied to demonstrate fiber composite material property variations induced by random changes expected at the material micro level. Regression results are presented to show the relative correlation between predictor and response variables in the study. These computational procedures make possible a formal description of anticipated random processes at the intraply level, and the related effects of these on composite properties.

Effect of 1.33 Mev gamma radiation and 0.5 Mev electrons on the mechanical properties of graphite fiber composites

Epoxy/graphite fiber, polyimide/graphite fiber, and polysulfone/graphite fiber composites were exposed to 1.33 Mev gamma irradiation and 0.5 Mev electron bombardment for varying periods of time. The effects of the irradiation treatments on the breaking stress and Young's modulus were studied by a three point bending test. Effects were small; both electron radiation up to 5000 Mrad and gamma radiation up to 350 Mrad resulted in slight increases in both stress and modulus.

Effects of Endcaps on the Properties of Polyimide/Carbon Fiber Composites

Carbon fiber (T650-35) composites were fabricated from polyimide resins, using 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic acid, dimethyl esters (HFDE) and p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) with three different endcaps; namely, nadic ester (NE), p-aminostyrene (p-AS) and 4-phenylethynylphthalic acid, methyl ester. The curing chemistry of these endcaps will be reviewed. The thermo-oxidative stability as well as the physical and mechanical properties of these polyimide/carbon fiber composites will be discussed.

Fracture Toughness of Carbon Fiber Composites Containing Various Fiber Sizings and a Puncture Self-Healing Thermoplastic Matrix

Ongoing efforts at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) have resulted in the identification of several commercially available thermoplastic resin systems which self-heal after ballistic impact and through penetration. One of these resins, polybutylene graft copolymer (PBg), was selected as a matrix for processing with unsized carbon fibers to fabricate reinforced composites for further evaluation. During process development, data from thermo-physical analyses was utilized to determine a processing cycle to fabricate laminate panels, which were analyzed by photo microscopy and acid digestion. The process cycle was further optimized based on these results to fabricate panels for mechanical property characterization. The results of the processing development effort of this composite material, as well as the results of the mechanical property characterization, indicated that bonding between the fiber and PBg was not adequate. Therefore, three sizings were investigated in this work to assess their potential to improve fiber/matrix bonding compared to previously tested unsized IM7 fiber. Unidirectional prepreg was made at NASA LaRC from three sized carbon fibers and utilized to fabricate test coupons that were tested in double cantilever beam configurations to determine GIc fracture toughness.

Analytical displacements and vibrations of cantilevered unsymmetric fiber composite laminates

A fiber composite flat cantilever plate that has symmetric and nonsymmetric laminate configurations is theoretically investigated to determine its static and dynamic structural response. The finite element analysis method used includes a unique triangular finite element developed at Lewis for the analysis of fiber composite airfoils. The various responses investigated include tip displacements, natural frequencies, and fundamental mode shapes. The results show that the displacements and the natural frequencies can be in considerable error for nonsymmetric laminate configurations if the membrane-bending coupling is not taken into account. Structural response results obtained from ten laminate configurations are presented in tabular forms and may be used as an aid in selecting laminate configurations for composite airfoils.

The finite element analysis method used includes a unique triangular finite element developed at Lewis for the analysis of fiber composite airfoils. The various responses investigated include tip displacements, natural frequencies, and fundamental mode shapes. The results show that laminate configurations may be selected for a cantilever such that when the tip at the leading edge is loaded normal to the plane of the plate, the tip at the trailing edge can (1) deflect in the opposite direction, (2) deflect about the same, or (3) deflect more than the tip at the leading edge. This variation in response can be utilized to provide built-in structural damping to resist flutter.

Optimal cure cycle design of a resin-fiber composite laminate

Fibers reinforced composites are used in many applications. The composite parts and structures are often manufactured by curing the prepreg or unmolded material. The magnitudes and durations of the cure temperature and the cure pressure applied during the cure process have significant consequences on the performance of the finished product. The goal of this study is to exploit the potential of applying the optimization technique to the cure cycle design. The press molding process of a polyester is used as an example. Various optimization formulations for the cure cycle design are investigated. Recommendations are given for further research in computerizing the cure cycle design.

Damping characteristics of damaged fiber composite components

Defects in fiber composite components produce changes with respect to the vibrational characteristics of the material. These changes can be recognized in the form of a frequency shift or an alteration of the damping process. The present investigation is concerned with questions regarding the possibility of a utilization of the changes in suitable defect-detecting inspection procedures. A description is given of a method for measuring the damping characteristics of a specimen. This method provides a spectrum of the damping coefficients of the sample as a basis for a comprehensive evaluation of the damping behavior. The correlation between defects and change in the damping characteristics is demonstrated with the aid of results obtained in measurements involving specimens of carbon-fiber composites and a component consisting of glass-fiber-reinforced plastics.

The influence of fiber waviness on the compressive behavior of unidirectional continuous fiber composites

The influence of fiber waviness and matrix nonlinearity on the compressive behavior of continuous fiber composites is studied. A micromechanics model based on the kinematics of the fibers has been developed to predict the behavior of unidirectional composites with initially wavy fibers under compressive loads. The initial waviness has been idealized as sinusoidal. Nonlinear shear behavior of the matrix has been included. Because the shear strain in the matrix is a function of position, the deformed shape of the fibers differs from the initial shape. Therefore, the deformed fiber shape is represented by a sine series. Fiber waviness and matrix shear properties have been determined experimentally for T650-42/Radel C under several conditions. These experimental data have been used as input into the analytical model. Predicted compressive response is in reasonable agreement with experimental data.

An inexpensive and effective method for calculating the strength of randomly reinforced fiber composites

Planar randomly reinforced fiber composites (PRRFC) is pseudoisotropic laminate with large number of ply orientation combinations where strength is function of these ply orientation combinations. Laminate theory can be applied to determine strength of PRRFC, and in conjunction with composite micro- and macromechanics can predict mechanical properties of PRRFC's with any fiber/matrix combination.

Structural response of fiber composite fan blades

A fiber composite airfoil, typical for high-tip speed compressor applications, is subjected to load conditions anticipated to be encountered in such applications, and its structural response is theoretically investigated. The analysis method used consists of composite mechanics embedded in pre- and post-processors and coupled with NASTRAN. The load conditions examined include thermal due to aerodynamic heating, pressure due to aerodynamic forces, centrifugal, and combinations of these. The various responses investigated include root reactions due to various load conditions, average composite and ply stresses, ply delaminations, and the fundamental modes and the corresponding reactions. The results show that the thermal and pressure stresses are negligible compared to those caused by the centrifugal forces. Also, the core-shell concept for composite blades is an inefficient design (core plies not highly stressed) and appears to be sensitive to interply delaminations. The results are presented in graphical and tabular forms to illustrate the types and amount of data required for such an analysis, and to provide quantitative data of the various responses which can be helpful in designing such composite blades.

Scaling of impact damage in fiber composites

Impact damage in fiber composite structures remains of much concern, and is often the limiting factor in establishing allowable strain levels. The complexity of impact damage formation usually dictates that experiments are required, but scaling of results from small laboratory scale specimens to large structures introduces additional uncertainty into the analysis. This presentation gives the results of an analytical and experimental investigation intended to develop procedures for prediction of damage formation and subsequent strength loss, with particular emphasis on scaling of results with respect to structure size. The experimental investigation involved both drop-weight and airgun impact on carbon/epoxy plates and cylinders. Five sizes of plates ranging from 50 by 50 by 1.072 mm to 250 by 250 by 5.36 mm, and two sizes of cylinders with diameters of 96.5 and 319 mm, were employed in the experimental program. Impact tests were carried out over a range of impact conditions, and specimens were inspected for damage by C-scan and deplying. Analysis procedures were developed for both quasistatic and dynamic impacts for both the plates and cylinders. As has been reported previously, comparison of predicted structural response and measured surface strains was quite good over the entire range of sizes employed in the program. The damage formation and strength loss after impact showed a number of interesting features that are significant with respect to scaling of size. The extent of delamination was observed to increase with specimen size more than would be expected if stresses controlled the delamination extent. This was explained on the basis that delamination is controlled by energy release rates, and thus incorporates the usual dependence on the absolute size characteristic of fracture mechanics. Additionally, the experiments indicated that delamination initiated at matrix cracks and is dependent on the absolute size of the ply group thicknesses. Both the initiation and propagation of delamination are seen to be controlled by fracture mechanics parameters, and thus show specific dependence on size that must be accounted for in extrapolating results from laboratory scale tests to full size structures.

Equations to assess the impact resistance of fiber composites

Numerical analysis of impact resistance of composite materials containing fibers is discussed. Mathematical model of longitudinal impact resistance is presented. Potential impact resistance of various fiber composites as obtained by numerical analysis is presented as plotted curve.

Method of Fabricating NASA-Standard Macro-Fiber Composite Piezoelectric Actuators

The NASA Macro-Fiber Composite actuator is a flexible piezoelectric composite device designed for controlling vibrations and shape deformations in high performance aerospace structures. A complete method for fabricating the standard NASA Macro-Fiber Composite actuator is presented in this document. When followed precisely, these procedures will yield devices with electromechanical properties identical to the standard actuator manufactured by NASA Langley Research Center.

Design properties of randomly reinforced fiber composites

The pseudoisotropic-laminate analogy is used in conjunction with fiber composite micro- and macromechanics to predict the thermal and mechanical properties of planar randomly reinforced fiber composites (PRRFC). Theoretical results are presented for boron/aluminum, boron/epoxy, Thornel-50/epoxy, and S-glass/epoxy PRRFC. The results show that the thermal and elastic properties depend on both constituent materials and the fiber volume ratio. The strength depends also on the type of applied stress. In general, no simple ratio exists between the properties of unidirectional fiber composites and those of PRRFC. The data are presented in convenient graphical form to serve as an aid for design and/or analysis and also for further research in PRRFC. The residual stresses and the impact resistance are also theoretically examined.
