Field Enhancement Properties of Nanotubes in a Field Emission Set-Up

This slide presentation reviews the mechanisms of emission of nanotubes. The field enhancement properties of carbon nanotubes, involved in the emission of electrons, is investigated theoretically for various single-wall (SWNT) and multi-wall nanotubes (MWNT). The presentation points out big differences between (n,0) and (n,n) nanotubes, and propose phenomenological laws for the variations of the enhancement factor with length and diameter

Applied Magnetic Field Enhances Arc Vapor Deposition

Applied magnetic field enhances performance of vaporization part of arc vapor deposition apparatus. When no magnetic field applied by external means, arc wonders semirandomly over cathode, with net motion toward electrical feedthrough. When magnetic field applied arc moves circumferentially around cathode, and downward motion suppressed.

Estimating electric field enhancement factors on an aircraft utilizing a small scale model: A method evaluation

A method for obtaining field enhancement factors at specific points on an aircraft utilizing a small scale model was evaluated by measuring several canonical shapes. Comparison of the form factors obtained by analytical means with measurements indicate that the experimental method has serious flaws. Errors of 200 to 300 percent were found between analytical values and measured values. As a result of the study, the analytical method is not recommended for calibration of field meters located on aircraft, and should not be relied upon in any application where the local spatial derivatives of the electric field on the model are large over the dimensions of the sensing probe.

Interplanetary magnetic field enhancements in the solar wind Statistical properties at 1 AU

The present investigation is concerned with interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) enhancements which do not resemble any of the previously reported amplifications in the IMF. The magnetic field enhacements observed increase slowly at first and then more rapidly to a peak followed by a symmetrical decay. Interplanetary magnetic field enhacement observed by ISEE-3 on various dates are considered, giving attention to observations on June 5, 1979; September 8-9, 1980; February 5, 1981; and June 14-15, 1981. Interplanetary magnetic field enhancement observed with the aid of IMP-8 are also considered. A total of 45 events is found in surveying a 9-year period of magnetic field data.

Current oscillations in semi-insulating GaAs associated with field-enhanced capture of electrons by the major deep donor EL2

Current oscillations thermally activated by the release of electrons from deep levels in undoped semiinsulating GaAs were observed for the first time. They were attributed to electric field-enhanced capture of electrons by the dominant deep donor EL2 (antisite AsGa defect). This enhanced capture is due to the configurational energy barrier of EL2, which is readily penetrated by hot electrons.

Interplanetary field enhancements in the solar wind Statistical properties at 0.72 AU

A new class of disturbance in the interplanetary magnetic field has been discovered. This disturbance consists of an enhancement in the magnetic field strength lasting tens of minutes to hours. The strength of the enhancement is variable ranging up to over double the background field strength. The peak field pressure can be as high as 10 percent of the solar wind dynamic pressure. These events occur randomly with respect to the position of the spacecraft relative to Venus but not randomly with respect to Venus solar ecliptic longitude. There is a significant tendency for these events to cluster near certain ecliptic longitudes. The field distortion is often greater in the direction perpendicular to the solar wind flow rather than along it. These characteristics suggest that the source of the disturbances are weakly outgassing objects, possibly dispersed along their orbits such as in meteor streams.

Stable dielectric charge distributions from field enhancement of secondary mission

The emission of secondary electrons from dielectrics subject to numerous effects of electric field which are experimentally difficult to control is discussed. Measurements are reported using pulse techniques such that local fields do not build to significant levels, but measurements with fields present are also of interest. A specific series of measurements under controlled conditions are described and their implications in terms of fields, magnitude and angle, near the dielectric surface were examined. The measurements were made for a charged fluorinated-ethylene-propylene surface near a grounded aluminum half-round resting on the surface. The geometry produced a stable surface-charge gradient being controlled by a strongly enhanced secondary emission for which a model is constructed. Observations of surface flashovers under various conditions confirm the predictions of some scaling exercises.

Core magnetic field enhancement in single X line, multiple X line and patchy reconnection

Magnetic flux transfer events often show a significant increase of the magnetic field strength at the center of the events. Similar magnetic field observations have been reported for structures in or near the plasma sheet of the magnetotail at about 20 R(sub E). We have carried out two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) and simulations of single X line reconnection (SXR), multiple X line reconnection (MXR), and patchy reconnection to determine and compare the amplification of the magnetic field in the center of the developing flux tubes. The various processes are achieved by appropriate choices of 2D or 3D resistivity models. The simulations show that the increase in magnetic field strength depends on both the property of the initial configuration and the particular reconnection geometry. For the chosen initial conditions the MXR process leads to a larger increase in the core magnetic field than the patchy reconnection and SXR caused by larger magnetic tensions in the MXR process. The 3D processes always lead to a larger amplification than the corresponding 2D processes. In the 3D cases, force imbalance in the y direction will accelerate plasma out of the flux tube. This process reduces the thermal pressure and leads to a further compression of the flux rope, which yields an additional increase in the interior magnetic field strength.

Interplanetary magnetic field enhancements and their association with the asteroid 2201 Oljato

Comparison of the times of occurrence of a newly discovered type of disturbance in the interplanetary magnetic field at 0.72 astronomical unit with the passage of the small Venus-crossing asteroid, 2201 Oljato, reveals a possible association, but the source of these disturbances appears to be associated with outgassing material in the Oljato orbit some distance behind the asteroid and not with the asteroid itself. This suggested association can account for one quarter of the total number of events seen in eight Venus years.

Interplanetary field enhancements in the solar wind - Evidence for cometesimals at 0.72 and 1.0 AU?

A new class of interplanetary magnetic disturbance has been identified which consists of a nearly symmetric rise and fall of the magnetic field surrounding a cusp-shaped maximum. These disturbances have been hypothesized to be caused by the mass-loading of the solar wind by small outgassing bodies. The clustering of these events in space suggests that not all the events are independent. Clustering is greatest at 0.72 AU because of one very strong family of events associated with the orbit of the asteroid 2201 0ljato. The events are larger at 0.72 AU than at 1 AU. The timing of the disturbances at both 1 AU and 0.72 AU relative to 0ljato suggests the presence of outgassing debris both in front of and behind the asteroid.

Interplanetary magnetic field enhancements - Further evidence for an association with asteroid 2201 Oljato

In 1980 and 1983 the asteroid 2201 Oljato passed inside the orbit of Venus, respectively 65 and 21 days prior to the passage of Venus, apparently causing disturbances in the interplanetary magnetic field, possibly through the interaction of its debris trail with the solar wind. In July 1986 the asteroid passed through the inner solar system 25 days after Venus and it is expected to find similar disturbances if the debris trail extended in front of the asteroid. The expected disturbances were observed. All data from the longitude range of the disturbances have been examined for all Venus years as well as from a control period over the same solar longitudes but at different ecliptic longitudes. No enhancements in the rate of occurrence of events were seen in the control periods during 1980, 1983 and 1986, and the rate was uniformly low at all other times. The new data reaffirm the association of solar wind disturbances with the asteroidal passage and imply a debris trail that extends perhaps 1 AU both in front of and behind the asteroid.

High-Altitude High-Latitude Electron-Density and Magnetic-Field Enhancements Observed during Magnetic Storms - Including the Storm of 17 April 2002

In addition to the spectacular remote measurements from the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite [Burch, Space Sci. Rev., 2003], the Radio Plasma Imager (RPI) on IMAGE had the capability of making accurate magnetospheric local electron-density and magnetic-field determinations in addition to obtaining remote electron-density profiles [Reinisch et al., GRL, 2001; Benson et al., JGR, 2003]. These determinations were made using interleaved passive and active modes of operation of the RPI; the former were used to produce dynamic spectra and the latter to produce plasmagrams during active sounding. The plasmagrams of particular interest in this investigation were produced during the apogee (8 RE) portion of the IMAGE orbit when the RPI often operated in a high-resolution mode (300 Hz frequency steps) designed for accurate frequency measurements of sounder-stimulated plasma resonances. Here we present examples from 2001 and 2002, when the IMAGE apogee was at high latitudes, of large increase the electron density and magnetic-field intensity (relative to quiet control conditions) during magnetic storms. During the 17 April 2002 storm, the electron density increased by about a factor of 4 and the magnetic-field intensity increased by nearly a factor of 2. During the much larger storm of 31 March 2001, the RPI data presented in Osherovich et al. [2007] indicates that the electron density increased by about a factor of 10.

Piezoelectric Field Enhanced Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities in Wurtzite GaN/AlGaN Quantum Wells

Second-order nonlinear optical processes including second-harmonic generation, optical rectification, and difference-frequency generation associated with intersubband transitions in wurtzite GaN/AlGaN quantum well (QW) are investigated theoretically. Taking into account the strain-induced piezoelectric (PZ) effects, we solve the electronic structure of the QW from coupled effective-mass Schrodinger equation and Poisson equation including the exchange-correlation effect under the local-density approximation. We show that the large PZ field in the QW breaks the symmetry of the confinement potential profile and leads to large second-order susceptibilities. We also show that the interband optical pump-induced electron-hole plasma results in an enhancement in the maximum value of the nonlinear coefficients and a redshift of the peak position in the nonlinear optical spectrum. By use of the difference-frequency generation, THz radiation can be generated from a GaN/Al(0.75)Ga(0.25)N with a pump laser of 1.55 micron.

Interplanetary magnetic field enhancements - Evidence for solar wind dust trail interactions

Magnetic disturbances related to the passage of the asteroid 2201 Oljato are described. It is pointed out that the process leading to these disturbances must be associated with material in the orbit of Oljato and not the Oljato asteroid itself. Using data from latest space observations, the statistical association of these disturbances with the orbit of 2201 Oljato is updated, and the possible mechanisms for causing the disturbances are discussed. The phenomenon is considered to be associated with comet-like processes in the solar wind.
