Holistic comparison of environmental barrier coating material candidates through design of a figure of merit

The first figure of merit for environmental barrier coating (EBC) materials was designed through a ranking system for material properties pertaining to established EBC failure modes in service. Seven past, present, and novel EBC candidate materials were used in the figure of merit design: SiO 2 , Ba 0.75 Sr 0.25 Al 2 Si 2 O 8 (BSAS), HfSiO 4 , Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 , Yb 2 SiO 5 , Yb 2 O 3 , and YbPO 4 . Utilizing compiled data from the literature, the presented figure of merit verified Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 as the state-of-the-art candidate with optimal EBC properties and inferred that YbPO 4 should be considered as a potentially viable EBC material candidate. Further, the figure of merit allows for a holistic comparison of EBC candidates and informs experimental and computational search efforts for next-generation complex EBCs. Clear knowledge gaps found through this work include CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (CMAS)-resistant coatings, EBC lifetimes before delamination, and oxidant diffusion rates in relevant EBC microstructures. It was shown that while some materials show promise for solving a single key failure mode for EBCs (i.e., CMAS reactivity), a community-wide goal should be placed on materials development to achieve acceptable resistance against all major failure modes, which are interconnected. Novel compositionally complex EBC materials, in addition to layered EBC architectures, show promise for the optimization of material properties for long-lifetime EBCs in combustion environments.

Comment on “Introduction of a Novel Figure of Merit for the Assessment of Transparent Conductive Electrodes in Photovoltaics: Exact and Approximate Form”

Anand et al. introduce an implicit equation for transparent conductive electrode (TCE) merit in photovoltaics (PV) by lumping series resistance in with the diode. However, an explicit equation has been previously derived by lumping series resistance external to the diode. For TCEs of practical interest for PV, the choice of where to lump series resistance does not affect merit, so external lumping is preferred. On the other hand, monolith deadspace, metal grid shadowing, and grid resistance shift TCE merit away from the figure of merit behavior published by Anand et al.

Characterization of high-temperature figure of merit for solar-thermal absorbers

The figure of merit (FOM) is a widely used metric to characterize the solar-thermal conversion performance of solar absorber layers. Many of previous works have reported FOMs estimated from the radiative properties measured at room temperature. However, advanced concentrated solar power (CSP) plants operate at very high temperatures (~750°C), which can strongly affect the absorber’s radiative properties. Here, the present work proposes using a 1-D conduction-based reference bar technique to directly measure the converted thermal energy to determine the FOM at high absorber temperatures (≳ 750°C) while operating under a large solar concentration (~ 1200 x suns). Using the finite difference method, we carefully analyze several key parameters influencing the design of the experimental setup, such as temperature distribution, material properties, heat loss, and sensor accuracy. In addition, a rigorous uncertainty analysis is incorporated into the FOM to ascertain the confidence level of the result. We validate this new technique on a custom-built tungsten reference bar with an oxidized Inconel 625 solar-thermal absorber. A good agreement between the model and the experiment shows the reliability of the FOM measurement with a well-defined uncertainty. The same method can be implemented to measure the high-temperature FOM of most surface or volumetric solar absorbers for CSP.

Increasing the mobility and power-electronics figure of merit of AlGaN with atomically thin AlN/GaN digital-alloy superlattices

Alloy scattering in random AlGaN alloys drastically reduces the electron mobility and, therefore, the power-electronics figure of merit. As a result, Al compositions greater than 75% are required to obtain even a twofold increase in the Baliga figure of merit compared to GaN. However, beyond approximately 80% Al composition, donors in AlGaN undergo the DX transition, which makes impurity doping increasingly more difficult. Moreover, the contact resistance increases exponentially with the increase in Al content, and integration with dielectrics becomes difficult due to the upward shift of the conduction band. Atomically thin superlattices of AlN and GaN, also known as digital alloys, are known to grow experimentally under appropriate growth conditions. These chemically ordered nanostructures could offer significantly enhanced figure of merit compared to their random alloy counterparts due to the absence of alloy scattering, as well as better integration with contact metals and dielectrics. In this work, we investigate the electronic structure and phonon-limited electron mobility of atomically thin AlN/GaN digital-alloy superlattices using first-principles calculations based on density-functional and many-body perturbation theory. The bandgap of the atomically thin superlattices reaches 4.8 eV, and the in-plane (out-of-plane) mobility is 369 (452) cm 2 V -1 s -1 . Using the modified Baliga figure of merit that accounts for the dopant ionization energy, here we demonstrate that atomically thin AlN/GaN superlattices with a monolayer sublattice periodicity have the highest modified Baliga figure of merit among several technologically relevant ultra-wide bandgap materials, including random AlGaN, β-Ga 2 O 3 , cBN, and diamond.

Space charge limited corrections to the power figure of merit for diamond

An interpretation of the unipolar figure of merit is formulated for wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors based on the on-state specific resistance (RON,sp) derived from the space charge limited current–voltage relationship (Mott–Gurney square law). The limitations of the traditional Ohmic R ON,sp for WBG semiconductors are discussed, particularly at low doping, while the accuracy of the Mott–Gurney based R ON,sp is confirmed by Silvaco ATLAS drift–diffusion simulations of diamond Schottky pin diodes. The effects of incomplete ionization are considered as well.

Polycrystalline SnSe with a thermoelectric figure of merit greater than the single crystal

Abstract Thermoelectric materials generate electric energy from waste heat, with conversion efficiency governed by the dimensionless figure of merit, ZT. Single-crystal tin selenide (SnSe) was discovered to exhibit a high ZT of roughly 2.2–2.6 at 913 K, but more practical and deployable polycrystal versions of the same compound suffer from much poorer overall ZT, thereby thwarting prospects for cost-effective lead-free thermoelectrics. The poor polycrystal bulk performance is attributed to traces of tin oxides covering the surface of SnSe powders, which increases thermal conductivity, reduces electrical conductivity and thereby reduces ZT. Here, we report that hole-doped SnSe polycrystalline samples with reagents carefully purified and tin oxides removed exhibit an ZT of roughly 3.1 at 783 K. Its lattice thermal conductivity is ultralow at roughly 0.07 W m –1 K –1 at 783 K, lower than the single crystals. The path to ultrahigh thermoelectric performance in polycrystalline samples is the proper removal of the deleterious thermally conductive oxides from the surface of SnSe grains. These results could open an era of high-performance practical thermoelectrics from this high-performance material.

Considerations for Electrochemical Phosphorus Precipitation: A Figures of Merit Approach

Electrochemical phosphorus precipitation (EPP) from wastewater is a promising emerging technology for recovering valuable nutrients. While there are significant advantages of EPP compared to traditional phosphorus recovery, large gaps in reported performance exist between EPP methods and between EPP and industrial methods. Herein we discuss Figures of Merit (FOM) to normalize and report EPP performance at low-to-intermediate technology readiness levels (TRLs). Here, the appropriate use of FOM in electrochemical engineering enables better comparison between technologies, enhanced understanding of electrochemical and mass transport phenomena, and faster scale-up and adoption of nascent technologies.¬ FOM specific to EPP are discussed along with important considerations and adaptations from traditional electrochemical engineering FOM. Importantly, this FOM approach may be adapted for many different electrochemical processes and technologies, aiding in the push toward and adoption of electrification in chemical processing.

Phenomenon Identification and Ranking Table Development for Future Application Figure-of-Merit Studies on Thermal Energy Storage Integrations with Light Water Reactors

There are no standard prioritization criteria for evaluating thermal energy storage (TES) options for use in integrated energy systems. A framework for proposing, analyzing, and presenting energy storage integration with power producers and users is presented along with a specific figure-of-merit (FOM) study based in this framework. This basis for evaluating storage technologies can provide a structure for the energy industry to analyze and prioritize energy storage in different applications and environments. The phenomena identification and ranking table (PIRT) presents a series of design questions specific to energy storage applications. The FOM study, built in this PIRT framework based on a nuclear-renewable hybrid energy system using TES to produce power and provide process energy for a secondary user, successfully identified specific technologies to use based on the project requirements. Expanding the library of projects using this framework will expand the deployable options for energy storage and increase its potential for energy security.

A quantitative figure of merit for battery SEI films and their use as functional solid-state electrolytes

As a key passivation film that governs battery operation, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has long been credited for enabling high-performance batteries or blamed for their eventual death. However, qualitative descriptions of the SEI often found in the literature (e.g., “conductive,” “passivating”) highlight our incomplete understanding of this layer, where even the most basic properties foundational to SEI function remain difficult to measure. Here, we quantify SEI conductivities and SEI transference numbers using a separator-free Cu|SEI|Li architecture that treats the SEI as a functional solid-state electrolyte (SSE). We find that while any SEI property alone (e.g., electronic conductivity) is weakly correlated (R 2 < 0.67) with battery performance (e.g., Coulombic efficiency), a strong correlation (R 2 > 0.99) can be achieved by defining the “SEI cT number” as a product between the SEI transference number (T) and the ratio of SEI conductivities (c). Analogous to the thermoelectric figure of merit (i.e., zT ), SEI cT quantitatively benchmarks the holistic impact of SEI properties on battery performance and underscores the pitfalls of citing such properties in isolation. Perhaps most strikingly, we demonstrate that Li metal deposition and stripping at room temperature is possible in our separator-free Cu|SEI|Li cell, confirming that the SEI can function precisely as an SSE. Together, these results enrich our understanding of the SEI, not just as a passivation layer but as a functional structure that can potentially have important implications for solid-state batteries.

Designing Spin‐Crossover Systems to Enhance Thermopower and Thermoelectric Figure‐of‐Merit in Paramagnetic Materials

Thermoelectric materials, capable of converting temperature gradients into electrical power, have been traditionally limited by a trade‐off between thermopower and electrical conductivity. This study introduces a novel, broadly applicable approach that enhances both the spin‐driven thermopower and the thermoelectric figure‐of‐merit (zT) without compromising electrical conductivity, using temperature‐driven spin crossover. Our approach, supported by both theoretical and experimental evidence, is demonstrated through a case study of chromium doped‐manganese telluride, but is not confined to this material and can be extended to other magnetic materials. By introducing dopants to create a high crystal field and exploiting the entropy changes associated with temperature‐driven spin crossover, we achieved a significant increase in thermopower, by approximately 136 μV K −1 , representing more than a 200% enhancement at elevated temperatures within the paramagnetic domain. Our exploration of the bipolar semiconducting nature of these materials reveals that suppressing bipolar magnon/paramagnon‐drag thermopower is key to understanding and utilizing spin crossover‐driven thermopower. These findings, validated by inelastic neutron scattering, X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy, thermal transport, and energy conversion measurements, shed light on crucial material design parameters. We provide a comprehensive framework that analyzes the interplay between spin entropy, hopping transport, and magnon/paramagnon lifetimes, paving the way for the development of high‐performance spin‐driven thermoelectric materials.

Thermoelectric Figure of Merit of a Superatomic Crystal Re 6 Se 8 I 2 Monolayer

Superatomic materials are newly emerging candidates for high-performance thermoelectric (TE) devices due to their intrinsic ultralow thermal conductivities. However, the low TE power factor becomes a huge obstacle to reaching the required the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) values for practical applications. Here, motivated by the recently synthesized superatomic Re 6 Se 8 I 2 monolayer [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 144, 74 (2022)], we study its superior thermoelectric properties by using density functional theory combined with phonon Boltzmann transport theory and deep potential molecular dynamics. We show that the large mass and anharmonic Re-I bonds introduce strong phonon scattering and result in low lattice thermal conductivity of 1.20 W m -1 K -1 at 300 K, while the strong and harmonic Re-Se network ensures the high TE power factor of 4344 μW m -1 K -2 in b direction for n-type doping. This is an order of magnitude higher than that of other cluster-based materials. Due to the low thermal conductivity and high TE power factor, Re 6 Se 8 I 2 exhibits high ZT values of 1.20 (500 K) and 1.43 (900 K) with n-type doping along the b direction among all the cluster-based thermoelectric materials reported so far.

Pressure-Induced Enhancement of Thermoelectric Figure of Merit and Structural Phase Transition in TiNiSn

Half-Heusler thermoelectric materials are potential candidates for high thermoelectric efficiency. Here, we report high-pressure thermoelectric and structural property measurements, density functional theory calculations on the half-Heusler material TiNiSn, and an increase of 15% in the relative dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, around 3 GPa. Thermal and electrical properties were measured utilizing a specialized sample cell assembly designed for the Paris–Edinburgh large-volume press to a maximum pressure of 3.5 GPa. High-pressure structural measurements performed up to 50 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell indicated the emergence of a new high-pressure phase around 20 GPa. A first-principles structure search performed using an ab initio random structure search approach identified the high-pressure phase as an orthorhombic type, in good agreement with the experimental results.

High thermoelectric figure of merit of porous Si nanowires from 300 to 700 K.

Thermoelectrics operating at high temperature can cost-effectively convert waste heat and compete with other zero-carbon technologies. Among different high-temperature thermoelectrics materials, silicon nanowires possess the combined attributes of cost effectiveness and mature manufacturing infrastructures. Despite significant breakthroughs in silicon nanowires based thermoelectrics for waste heat conversion, the figure of merit (ZT) or operating temperature has remained low. Here, we report the synthesis of large-area, wafer-scale arrays of porous silicon nanowires with ultra-thin Si crystallite size of ~4 nm. Concurrent measurements of thermal conductivity (κ), electrical conductivity (σ), and Seebeck coefficient (S) on the same nanowire show a ZT of 0.71 at 700 K, which is more than ~18 times higher than bulk Si. This ZT value is more than two times higher than any nanostructured Si-based thermoelectrics reported in the literature at 700 K. Experimental data and theoretical modeling demonstrate that this work has the potential to achieve a ZT of ~1 at 1000 K.

Microscopic origin of the high thermoelectric figure of merit of n -doped SnSe

Excellent thermoelectric performance in the out-of-layer n-doped SnSe has been observed experimentally [Chang et al., Science 360, 778-783 (2018)]. Though, a first-principles investigation of the dominant scattering mechanisms governing all thermoelectric transport properties is lacking. In the present work, by applying extensive first-principles calculations of electron-phonon coupling associated with parameterized calculation of the scattering by ionized impurities, we investigate the reasons behind the superior figure of merit as well as the enhancement of zT above 600 K in n-doped out-of-layer SnSe, as compared to p-doped SnSe with similar carrier densities. For the n-doped case, the relaxation time is dominated by ionized impurity scattering and increases with temperature, a feature that maintains the power factor at high values at higher temperatures and simultaneously causes the carrier thermal conductivity at zero electric current (κ el ) to decrease faster for higher temperatures, leading to an ultrahigh-zT = 3.1 at 807 K. We rationalize the roles played by κ el and κ 0 (the thermal conductivity due to carrier transport under isoelectrochemical conditions) in the determination of zT. Our results show the ratio between κ 0 and the lattice thermal conductivity indeed corresponds to the upper limit for zT, whereas the difference between calculated zT and the upper limit is proportional to κ el .

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

The entanglement of lattice thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient complicates the process of optimizing thermoelectric performance in most thermoelectric materials. Semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivities and high power factors at the same time are scarce but fundamentally interesting and practically important for energy conversion. In this work, an intrinsic p-type semiconductor TlCuSe that has an intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity (0.25 W m -1 K -1 ), a high power factor (11.6 μ W cm -1 K -2 ), and a high figure of merit, ZT (1.9) at 643 K is described. The weak chemical bonds, originating from the filled antibonding orbitals p-d* within the edge-sharing CuSe 4 tetrahedra and long Tl-Se bonds in the PbClF-type structure, in conjunction with the large atomic mass of Tl lead to an ultralow sound velocity. Strong anharmonicity, coming from Tl + lone-pair electrons, boosts phonon-phonon scattering rates and further suppresses lattice thermal conductivity. The multiband character of the valence band structure contributing to power factor enhancement benefits from the lone-pair electrons of Tl + as well, which modify the orbital character of the valence bands, and pushes the valence band maximum off the Gamma-point, increasing the band degeneracy. The results provide new insight on the rational design of thermoelectric materials.

High figure of merit extreme bandgap Al 0.87 Ga 0.13 N-Al 0.64 Ga 0.36 N heterostructures over bulk AlN substrates

We report on high-quality n -Al 0.87 Ga 0.13 N-A 0.64 Ga 0.36 N heterostructures over single crystal AlN. For these pseudomorphic heterostructures, high-resolution X-ray and X-ray Topographic analysis was used to establish a threading dislocation density of 7 × 10 3 cm -2 . Using reverse composition graded n + -Al x Ga 1- x N contact layers, we obtained linear ohmic contacts with 4.3 Ω mm specific resistance. A critical breakdown field >11 MV cm -1 was also measured. In combination with the channel resistance of 2400 Ω sq -1 , these translate to a Baliga’s Figure of Merit of 2.27 GW cm -2 . This, to the best of our knowledge is the highest reported value for extreme bandgap AlGaN heterostructures.
