Control system design and stability analysis for a three phase SiC-based Filter-less grid-connected PV inverter

In this paper, a control system of a filter-less grid-connected SiC inverter is designed. Stability analysis has been researched with a focus on grid disturbance rejection. The analysis shows that the conventional control method with instantaneous grid voltage feedforward (IGVF) will significantly limit the bandwidth or stability margin of a filter-less grid-connected inverter, thus make the inverter sensitive to grid disturbance. Two proposed grid voltage feedforward control methods, which require little additional computation resources, are presented to suppress the grid voltage disturbance. The design methods of control parameters are derived. The effects of the proposed feedforward methods are also compared with that of conventional IGVF. Lastly, the grid-connected experimental results of a three phase SiC based filter-less PV inverter are provided to verify and compare the proposed control methods.

An Inner-Loop Control Method for the Filter-less, Voltage Sensor-less, and PLL-less Grid-Following Inverter-Based Resource

This paper presents a novel inner-loop control method for the inverter-based resource (IBR). The innovative concepts include removing the voltage sensors at the point of common coupling (PCC), removing the inverter interface inductance, and removing the traditional phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits. Simulation is conducted to verify the feasibility of the method. Furthermore, the virtual impedance is applied to the control loop to improve the current THD and dynamics. Compared to the traditional control, the proposed one helps offload the system by reducing the bulky inductors and voltage sensors without compromising the control performance.

Energy efficient photonic millimeter-wave generation using cascaded polarization modulators

A filter-less millimeter-wave generation scheme consisting of four polarization modulators in series, each followed by a polarizer is proposed to achieve optoelectronic frequency octupling. The cascade of polarization modulator and polarizer provides an intensity modulator whose biasing condition can be set by the polarizer angle and polarization state of the input light to each polarization modulator. A theoretical analysis of the architecture is performed using a transfer function method and validated by industry-standard software simulation tools. The circuit shows high potential in achieving desired performance with lower input RF power when compared to the another configuration based on a generalized Mach–Zehnder interferometer structure. Although the operating range in terms of applied RF drive becomes narrow, low RF input operation can be achieved by this circuit. The effect of imbalances in the key circuit parameters is also investigated in terms of electrical side harmonic suppression ratio.

Final CTAP Report

Sandia will provide technical assistance to Helpful Engineering to develop and test the Universal Citizen Protection Device (UCPD) which is a UV-based filter-less PPE concept that aims to keep the Sars-CoV-2 virus out of eyes, nose and mouth with a 99%+ reliability. The heart of the device would be a concealed UV Chamber that decontaminates all air going in and out of the PPE. Helpful Engineering’s goal is to build this device to be reusable and cost less than $100 to construct and can be worn for 8 hours. The UCPD is an open source project, and once developed, prototyped, tested and approved, it will be shared with interested manufacturers globally.
