Bidirectional fluid-flow monitor

Bidirectional fluid-flow monitor detects flow rates as low as 0.1 gal/min (0.41/min) and operates at temperatures up to 350 F (177 C) and at pressures to 500 psig (3.6 X 10 to the sixth power N/M squared). Monitor shows "no flow" or "maximum flow" conditions and approximately indicates immediate flow rates.

Serial Network Flow Monitor

Using a commercial software CD and minimal up-mass, SNFM monitors the Payload local area network (LAN) to analyze and troubleshoot LAN data traffic. Validating LAN traffic models may allow for faster and more reliable computer networks to sustain systems and science on future space missions. Research Summary: This experiment studies the function of the computer network onboard the ISS. On-orbit packet statistics are captured and used to validate ground based medium rate data link models and enhance the way that the local area network (LAN) is monitored. This information will allow monitoring and improvement in the data transfer capabilities of on-orbit computer networks. The Serial Network Flow Monitor (SNFM) experiment attempts to characterize the network equivalent of traffic jams on board ISS. The SNFM team is able to specifically target historical problem areas including the SAMS (Space Acceleration Measurement System) communication issues, data transmissions from the ISS to the ground teams, and multiple users on the network at the same time. By looking at how various users interact with each other on the network, conflicts can be identified and work can begin on solutions. SNFM is comprised of a commercial off the shelf software package that monitors packet traffic through the payload Ethernet LANs (local area networks) on board ISS.

Space-Derived Sewer Monitor

The QuadraScan Longterm Flow Monitoring System is a second generation sewer monitor developed by American Digital Systems, Inc.'s founder Peter Petroff. Petroff, a former spacecraft instrumentation designer at Marshall Space Flight Center, used expertise based on principles acquired in Apollo and other NASA programs. QuadraScan borrows even more heavily from space technology, for example in its data acquisition and memory system derived from NASA satellites. "One-time" measurements are often plagued with substantial errors due to the flow of groundwater absorbed into the system. These system sizing errors stem from a basic informational deficiency: accurate, reliable data on how much water flows through a sewer system over a long period of time is very difficult to obtain. City officials are turning to "permanent," or long-term sewer monitoring systems. QuadraScan offers many advantages to city officials such as the early warning capability to effectively plan for city growth in order to avoid the crippling economic impact of bans on new sewer connections in effect in many cities today.

Monitoring the Flow of the Greenland Ice Sheet: the PROMICE Ice Velocity Product and Recent Updates

We present the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) ice velocity product, which is a time series of ice velocity mosaics derived using offset tracking on Sentinel-1 SAR data. The time series starting in January 2016 is continuously updated with a new mosaic every 12 days and is posted at 500 m grid resolution. Within PROMICE, the ice velocity product is used directly as input to estimate the solid ice discharge from the Greenland Ice Sheet as well as to study ice dynamic processes on seasonal and multi-annual time scales. Recently, we have made changes to the processing chain due to spurious cases of slow down detected in a few glaciers in Southeast Greenland. In this contribution, we discuss how this was resolved as well as other recent improvements to the product.

Real-Time Optical Monitoring of Flow Kinetics and Gas Phase Reactions Under High-Pressure OMCVD Conditions

This contribution addresses the real-time optical characterization of gas flow and gas phase reactions as they play a crucial role for chemical vapor phase depositions utilizing elevated and high pressure chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) conditions. The objectives of these experiments are to validate on the basis of results on real-time optical diagnostics process models simulation codes, and provide input parameter sets needed for analysis and control of chemical vapor deposition at elevated pressures. Access to microgravity is required to retain high pressure conditions of laminar flow, which is essential for successful acquisition and interpretation of the optical data. In this contribution, we describe the design and construction of the HPCVD system, which include access ports for various optical methods of real-time process monitoring and to analyze the initial stages of heteroepitaxy and steady-state growth in the different pressure ranges. To analyze the onset of turbulence, provisions are made for implementation of experimental methods for in-situ characterization of the nature of flow. This knowledge will be the basis for the design definition of experiments under microgravity, where gas flow conditions, gas phase and surface chemistry, might be analyzed by remote controlled real-time diagnostics tools, developed in this research project.

Sewage Monitors

Every U.S. municipality must determine how much waste water it is processing and more importantly, how much is going unprocessed into lakes and streams either because of leaks in the sewer system or because the city's sewage facilities were getting more sewer flow than they were designed to handle. ADS Environmental Services, Inc.'s development of the Quadrascan Flow Monitoring System met the need for an accurate method of data collection. The system consists of a series of monitoring sensors and microcomputers that continually measure water depth at particular sewer locations and report their findings to a central computer. This provides precise information to city managers on overall flow, flow in any section of the city, location and severity of leaks and warnings of potential overload. The core technology has been expanded upon in terms of both technical improvements, and functionality for new applications, including event alarming and control for critical collection system management problems.

An improved high power hybrid capillary pumped loop

In order to improve performance testing, NASA's High-Power Spacecraft Thermal Management system has been modified through (1) an augmentation of heat-dissipation capacity of the condenser sink for steady-state high power operation, (2) the addition of more pressure transducers for pressure-drop monitoring in various system components, (3) the installation of pressure-contact thermocouples on the evaporators to measure heating surface temperature, (4) the provision of a coolant loop to one of the evaporator plates, (5) the placing of a transient fluid flow-monitoring load cell in the reservoir, and (6) the reorientation of the reservoir to reduce compressed vapor effects. The system is now capable of 10 hours of continuous capillary mode operation at an input power level of 20 kW.

Test-section noise of the Ames 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel no. 1

An investigation was made of the test-section noise levels at various wind speeds in the Ames 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel No. 1. No model was in the test section. Results showed that aerodynamic noise from various struts used to monitor flow conditions in the test section dominated the wind-tunnel background noise over much of the frequency spectrum. A tapered microphone stand with a thin trailing edge generated less noise than did a constant-chord strut with a blunt trailing edge. Noise from small holes in the test-section walls was insignificant.
