Domestically Manufactured Fuel Cells for Heavy Duty Applications

This project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under Award DE-EE0009248, advances the domestic development of fuel-cell stack technologies for heavy-duty transportation applications. The work directly supports the Million-Mile Fuel Cell Truck (M2FCT) initiative by improving performance, durability, and manufacturability—key requirements for next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell systems.

A Critical Review on the History of Fabricating Monolithic U-Mo Fuel Plates

Fabrication of uranium-molybdenum alloy fuels has been occurring since the early 2000s in support of the development of a high-uranium-density low-enrichment fuel for use in high-performance research and test reactors which operate at relatively low temperatures. The primary fuel form—a thin foil of uranium, alloyed with 10wt% molybdenum, which is coated in a layer of zirconium and then encapsulated with aluminum 6061 as a cladding material—was developed over a number of years.

BISON analyses of TRISO fuel performance, its dependence on time-at-temperature, and possible implications for fuel design and qualification

The Advanced Gas Reactor Fuel Development and Qualification (AGR) program has established a substantial technical foundation to support private entry into the U.S. high-temperature gas-cooled reactor market. However, emerging tristructural isotropic (TRISO)-fueled reactor applications include small modular reactors and microreactors with longer fuel residence times, which may expose fuels to higher time-at-temperature (TAT) values than were explored by the AGR program. Increased TAT could affect diffusive and thermomechanical behaviors such as Pd penetration, fission gas release, creep, and fission product transport. In this work, we applied multiscale best-estimate BISON fuel performance modeling to assess these effects within a representative design space based on the AGR-5/6/7 experiment and analyzed trends in predicted particle and compact fuel performance metrics with possible implications for near-term fuel design and qualification. BISON unambiguously predicted that TRISO fuel performance is sensitive to TAT. Increasing TAT was not predicted to increase the magnitude of failure-inducing tangential stresses in particle coating layers. Predictions obtained using a mechanistic model for Pd penetration indicated that penetration depth does not depend strongly on TAT. While these observations suggest that AGR testing provides a conservative upper bound for the steady-state operation of TRISO particles at lower powers and higher residence times, BISON also predicted that the release of poorly retained Ag would increase with TAT. Because these analyses applied models to extrapolate beyond the available experimental data, the authors recommend performing targeted experiments to confirm these predictions. Nevertheless, these predictions may provide reactor developers with enough confidence to make near-term design decisions associated with the potential fuel performance trade-offs of increasing TAT.

Toyota Highlander FCHV (CRADA CRD-12-00469 Final Report)

This project relates to the loan of four Toyota Mirai FCEV-adv vehicles to NLR to provide a load (vehicles to fill with hydrogen) to our fueling station research facility to study hydrogen fueling infrastructure performance using 700 bar precooled hydrogen at ESIF’s Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility (HITRF) facility.

Nuclear Security Risks for HALEU Fuels

There is growing interest in high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for use in advanced nuclear reactors as a high-energy fuel source. The primary objectives of this report are to identify the security risks that directly result from HALEU and to identify the gaps and challenges it presents from a theft and sabotage perspective. This study focuses on HALEU security risks for the front end of the fuel cycle and includes a review of the supply chain, fuel fabrication, and transport for terrestrial reactors.

Salt to Metal to Salt Heat Transfer in Narrow Fuel Pins (Final CRADA Report)

This work focused on improving the understanding and modeling of conjugate heat transfer in the Stable Salt Reactor (SSR), particularly the transfer of heat from molten fuel salt inside narrow fuel pins, through the metal cladding and into the surrounding coolant salt.

Intake runner for gaseous fuel engine, system, and method

A gaseous fuel engine system includes a hydrogen fuel supply, an engine housing having an intake port extending to a cylinder, and an intake runner. The intake runner includes a valve mount attached to a conduit and having a valve mounting face, and a gaseous fuel admission valve is mounted upon the valve mounting face. A hydrogen fuel passage extends from the valve mount through the conduit and is oriented angularly to at least one of a clamping face of the intake runner or the valve mounting face. Related apparatus and methodology is also disclosed.
