Gauge invariance, current conservation, and GIAO's

The well known relationship between gauge invariance and current conservation is exhibited within the usual quantum mechanical formalism. It is then shown that the use of gauge-invariant atomic orbitals (GIAO) does not necessarily lead to the expected current conservation. The reason is found to lie in the constrained nature of the gauge invariance which is provided by the use of GIAO's. It is concluded that this invariance is, of itself, no argument in favor of their use.

A general, gauge-invariant analysis of the cosmic microwave anisotropy

A general, gauge-invariant analysis of the large-scale anisotropies in the cosmic background radiation produced by arbitrary scalar, vector, or tensor perturbations in open, closed, or flat Robertson-Walker spacetimes (with no cosmological constant) is presented. The multipole moment predictions for the scale invariant spectrum and Omega = 1 universe predicted by inflationary cosmologies are contrasted with those for other spectra and for open and closed universes. Using the measured value of the dipole moment, limits are set on the expected value of the quadrupole moment as a function of Omega for various spectra.

Origin of gauge invariance in string theory

A first quantization of the space-time embedding Chi exp mu and the world-sheet metric rho of the open bosonic string. The world-sheet metric rho decouples from S-matrix elements in 26 dimensions. This formulation of the theory naturally includes 26-dimensional gauge transformations. The gauge invariance of S-matrix elements is a direct consequence of the decoupling of rho. Second quantization leads to a string field Phi(Chi exp mu, rho) with a gauge-covariant equation of motion.

Gauge invariant quantum cosmology

The study of boundary conditions, the Hamiltonian constraint, reparameterization-invariance, and quantum dynamics, is presently approached by means of the path-integral quantization of minisuperspace models. The separation of the wave functions for expansion and contraction by the Feynman boundary conditions is such that there can be no interference between them. This is implemented by the choice of a contour in the complex plane, in order to define the phase of the square-root Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (1960) Hamiltonian for expansion, collapse, and the classically forbidden region.

Equations of motion in the linear approximation.

Attempt to develop a gauge-invariant theory of the motion of singularities in an n-dimensional Riemannian space. A gauge-invariant theory is developed for a nongeodetic particle represented by a time-like world line in the linearized field theory. The solution of the basic algebraic and differential equations is to be constructed from the source line, the future null cones emanating from it, a scale factor, and nothing else, and the leading term of the solution is the Schwarzschild field. A class of possible solutions is examined, and it is shown that this class contains just one acceptable member - namely, a particle in constant acceleration.

The electrostatics of a dusty plasma

The potential distribution in a plasma containing dust grains were derived where the Debye length can be larger or smaller than the average intergrain spacing. Three models were treated for the grain-plasma system, with the assumption that the system of dust and plasma is charge-neutral: a permeable grain model, an impermeable grain model, and a capacitor model that does not require the nearest neighbor approximation of the other two models. A gauge-invariant form of Poisson's equation was used which is linearized about the average potential in the system. The charging currents to a grain are functions of the difference between the grain potential and this average potential. Expressions were obtained for the equilibrium potential of the grain and for the gauge-invariant capacitance between the grain and the plasma. The charge on a grain is determined by the product of this capacitance and the grain-plasma potential difference.

Disentangling the Entangled Linkages of Magnetic Helicity

Magnetic helicity, H, measures magnetic linkages in a volume. The early theoretical development of helicity focused on magnetically closed systems in V bounded by ∂V. For magnetically closed systems, V ∈ R -3 = V + V∗, no magnetic flux threads the boundary, n̂ · B|∂V = 0. Berger & Field (1984) and Finn & Antonsen (1985) extended the definition of helicity to relative helicity, H, for magnetically open systems where magnetic flux may thread the boundary. Berger (1999, 2003) expressed this relative helicity as two gauge invariant terms that describe the self helicity of magnetic field that closes inside V and the mutual helicity between the magnetic field that threads the boundary ∂V and the magnetic field that closes inside V. The total magnetic field that permeates V entangles magnetic fields that are produced by current sources J in V with magnetic fields that are produced by current sources J∗ in V∗. Building on this fact, we extend Berger’s expressions for relative magnetic helicity to eight gauge invariant quantities that simultaneously characterize both of these self and mutual helicities and attribute their origins to currents J in V and/or J∗ in V∗, thereby disentangling the domain of origin for these entangled linkages. We arrange these eight terms into novel expressions for internal and external helicity (self) and internal-external helicity (mutual) based on their domain of origin. The implications of these linkages for interpreting magnetic energy is discussed and new boundary observables are proposed for tracking the evolution of the field that threads the boundary.

Choice of gauge in 2-photon 1s-2s transition in atomic hydrogen and pseudostate expansions

The problem of gauge choice in multiphoton transitions in connection with the proper choice of the unperturbed wave functions require to insure gauge invariance was considered. J. Bassani, J. J. Forney, and A. Quattropani considered the case of 2-photon 1s-2s transition rate for hydrogen, using gauges vector E x vector r and vector A x vector p. Exactly the same results were obtained for the two gauges, but the findings indicate that the vector E x vector r interaction tends to the final result with a small number of intermediate states and is therefore the one to be used in any approximate calculation. Whether the so-called pseudostate expansion method works equally well with either gauge was tested. To accomplish this task, in addition to researching the problem, the FORTRAN programming was learned and a FORTRAN program was constructed for the calculation of the dimensionless 2-photon transition probability amplitude D(v) for 1s-2s transition in Hydrogen as a function as a function of the incident photon frequency v in gauge vector E x vector p at certain values of v, using the pseudostate method. However, some puzzling unresolved difficulties were experienced in the calculation. Then should the pseudostate calculations prove successful for gauge vector E x vector r the method will be applied to gauge vector A x vector p. If successful, then the problem is complete.

Alternative formulations of magnetospheric plasma electrodynamics

The fundamental equations of magnetospheric plasma electrodynamics are considered from a theoretical standpoint that stresses the basic equivalence of various seemingly different formal representations. The mathematical properties of vector fields are reviewed, and their implications in electrodynamics are studied. The irrotational and solenoidal parts of the electric field are associated with two physically distinct types of sources. Relativistic covariance and gauge invariance in electromagnetic theory are reviewed and discussed in the context of an approach in which the mathematical properties of vector fields are taken as primary concepts. Special attention is given to the use and interpretation of the Coulomb gauge potential functions. This choice of gauge is sometimes regarded with undue suspicion, possibly because of a certain paradox concerning causality. The paradox is discussed and resolved. Useful properties of the Coulomb gauge are identified. These need not be limited to the case of slow time variations and can extend beyond the limits of validity of ideal MHD theory.

On the equation of state for an electron gas in an intense magnetic field

In this paper we derive the equation of state for a relativistic electron gas imbedded in a static homogeneous magnetic field of arbitrary strength. The derivation is based on the evaluation of the energy-momentum tensor and the use of Dirac's equation for such a problem. Contrary to a derivation presented several years ago, the present derivation is completely gauge-invariant. We also show how to recover, in an exact manner, the perfect gas law for the case of weak magnetic fields.

A technical description of the interior of a neutron star is presented. The neutron star-pulsar relation is reviewed and consideration is given to supernovae explosions, flux conservation in neutron stars, gauge-invariant derivation of the equation of state for a strongly magnetized gas, neutron beta-decay, and the stability condition for a neutron star.

Influence of a weak gravitational wave on a bound system of two point-masses

The problem of a weak gravitational wave impinging upon a nonrelativistic bound system of two point masses is considered. The geodesic equation for each mass is expanded in terms of two small parameters, v/c and dimensionless wave amplitude, in a manner similar to the post-Newtonian expansion; the geodesic equations are resolved into orbital and center-of-mass equations of motion. The effect of the wave on the orbit is determined by using Lagrange's planetary equations to calculate the time evolution of the orbital elements. The gauge properties of the solutions and, in particular, the gauge invariance of the secular effects are discussed.
