Gluon helicity in the nucleon from lattice QCD and machine learning

We present the first lattice QCD determination of the light cone gluon helicity correlation parton distribution function (PDF) with numerical evidence toward disfavoring negative gluon polarization in the nucleon. We present a solution for eliminating an inevitable contamination term that dominates the Euclidean correlations and makes determining gluon helicity PDF unfeasible. The proposed synergy between lattice QCD and artificial intelligence offers a superior platform to alleviate the defining challenge of extracting quark and gluon PDFs from the lattice data that are available in a limited domain due to a finite range of accessible hadron momenta. We suggest a systematically improvable method to extract PDFs from the lattice data, independent of inadequate parametrizations. The result of the gluon helicity will improve our understanding of the role of spin in the strong interaction and the nucleon-spin structure.

Gluon helicity from global analysis of experimental data and lattice QCD Ioffe time distributions

We perform a new global analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions with the inclusion of Ioffe time pseudodistributions computed in lattice QCD (LQCD), which are directly sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, Δ g . These lattice data have an analogous relationship to parton distributions as do experimental cross sections, and can be readily included in global analyses. We focus in particular on the constraining capability of current LQCD data on the sign of Δ g at intermediate parton momentum fractions x , which was recently brought into question by analysis of data in the absence of parton positivity constraints. We find that present LQCD data cannot discriminate between positive and negative Δ g solutions, although significant changes in the solutions for both the gluon and quark sectors are observed. Quark and gluon helicity evolution at small x: revised and updated

We revisit the problem of small Bjorken-x evolution of the gluon and flavor-singlet quark helicity distributions in the shock wave (s-channel) formalism. Earlier works on the subject in the same framework resulted in an evolution equation for the gluon field-strength F 12 and quark “axial current” $\overline{\psi}\gamma$ + γ 5 ψ operators (sandwiched between the appropriate light-cone Wilson lines) in the double-logarithmic approximation (summing powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) with α s the strong coupling constant). In this work, we observe that an important mixing of the above operators with another gluon operator, ${}_D{}^{\leftarrow i} {}_D{}^{i}$, also sandwiched between the light-cone Wilson lines (with the repeated transverse index i = 1, 2 summed over), was missing in the previous works. This operator has the physical meaning of the sub-eikonal (covariant) phase: its contribution to helicity evolution is shown to be proportional to another sub-eikonal operator, ${}_D{}^{i} {}_D{}^{\leftarrow i}$, which is related to the Jaffe-Manohar polarized gluon distribution. In this work we include this new operator into small-x helicity evolution, and construct novel evolution equations mixing all three operators (${}_D{}^{i} {}_D{}^{\leftarrow i}$, F 12 , and $\overline{\psi}\gamma$ + γ 5 ψ), generalizing the results of . We also construct closed double-logarithmic evolution equations in the large-N c and large-N c &N f limits, with N c and N f the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively. Solving the large-N c equations numerically we obtain the following small-x asymptotics of the quark and gluon helicity distributions ΔΣ and ΔG, along with the g 1 structure function, $$ \Delta \Sigma \left(x,{Q}^2\right)\sim \Delta G\left(x,{Q}^2\right)\sim {g}_1\left(x,{Q}^2\right)\sim {\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)}^{3.66\sqrt{\frac{\alpha_s{N}_c}{2\pi }}} $$ in complete agreement with the earlier work by Bartels, Ermolaev and Ryskin.

On the physics potential to study the gluon content of proton and deuteron at NICA SPD

The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a future multipurpose experiment foreseen to run at the NICA collider, which is currently under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia). The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at √s up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10 32 cm –2 s –1 . SPD will operate as a universal facility for the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using complementary probes such as: charmonia, open-charm, and prompt-photon production processes. Furthermore, the aim of this work is to provide a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. Among different pertinent phenomena particular attention is drawn to the study of the gluon helicity, gluon Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions in the nucleon, as well as the gluon transversity distribution in the deuteron, via the measurement of single and double spin asymmetries.

First study of polarized proton-proton scattering with small-𝑥 helicity evolution

We perform a phenomenological study of helicity-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) using small-𝑥 helicity evolution equations, incorporating for the first time single-inclusive jet production data in polarized proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) scattering at parton momentum fractions 𝑥 <0.1. We also simultaneously include double-longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering probing 𝑥 <0.1. Employing the polarized small-𝑥 pure-glue calculation of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → 𝑔⁡𝑋 for the jet production cross section, we modify the large-𝑁 𝑐 &𝑁 𝑓 KPS-CTT evolution equations by setting 𝑁 𝑓 = 0 to replicate the large-𝑁𝑐 (pure-glue) limit, while retaining external quark flavors for the spinor field operators. We find that the 𝑝⁢𝑝 data have a considerable impact on the helicity PDFs at small 𝑥, reducing their uncertainties and leading to a total quark and gluon helicity in the proton for 𝑥 < 0.1 of −0.04 ±0.23. Combining our analysis with a recent JAM helicity PDF analysis of the world polarized data, which includes 𝑥 > 0.1, we find a total quark and gluon helicity contribution for 𝑥 >10 −7 of between 0.02 and 0.51.

What we know and what we don’t know about the proton spin after 30 years

More than three decades ago, the European Muon Collaboration published a surprising result on the spin structure of the proton: the spins of its three quark components account for only a small part of the spin of the proton. Furthermore, ever since, theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding the origins of the proton spin. In this review, we discuss what has been learned so far, what is still missing and what could be learned from the upcoming experiments, including the Jefferson Lab 12GeV upgrade and the proposed Electron-Ion Collider. In particular, we focus on first-principles calculations and experimental measurements of the total gluon helicity ΔG, and the quark and gluon orbital angular momenta.

Quasiclassical evaluation of gluon saturation induced helicity effects

At sub-eikonal order in the high-energy limit, helicity dependences are generally contained in the transverse components of the gluon field. In the gluon saturation regime, novel helicity effects arise from the nonlinear interaction between the eikonal-order longitudinal gluon field and the sub-eikonal-order transverse gluon field. We derive this saturation induced helicity-dependent field both by solving the classical Yang-Mills equations and through direct diagrammatic calculations. Our analysis shows that the saturation induced helicity effect is intrinsically a two-particle (or multiparticle) correlation effect, rather than a single-particle distribution effect. Furthermore, we evaluate this effect in the context of double-spin asymmetry for incoherent diffractive dijet production in longitudinally polarized electron-nucleus collisions, using a simplified helicity-extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. We find that the saturation induced helicity effect further suppresses the back-to-back peak in the dijet azimuthal angle correlation, with a magnitude comparable to that of the direct helicity effect. This gluon saturation induced helicity effect may offer a novel avenue to probe gluon saturation in polarized collisions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Exploring orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit correlations for gluons at the Electron-Ion Collider

In our previous work [S. Bhattacharya , ], we introduced a pioneering observable aimed at experimentally detecting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of gluons. Our focus was on the longitudinal double spin asymmetry observed in exclusive dijet production during electron-proton scattering. We demonstrated the sensitivity of the cos ϕ angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton as a probe for gluon OAM at small x and its intricate interplay with gluon helicity. This current work provides a comprehensive exposition, diving further into the aforementioned calculation with added elaboration and in-depth analysis. We reveal that, in addition to the gluon OAM, one also gains access to the spin-orbit correlation of gluons. We supplement our work with a detailed numerical analysis of our observables for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider. In addition to dijet production, we also consider the recently proposed semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering process, which potentially offers experimental advantages over dijet measurements. Finally, we investigate quark-channel contributions to these processes and find an unexpected breakdown of collinear factorization. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Orbital angular momentum at small x

We determine the small Bjorken x asymptotics of the quark and gluon orbital angular momentum (OAM) distributions in the proton in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA), which resums powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) with α s the strong coupling constant. Starting with the operator definitions for the quark and gluon OAM, we simplify them at small x, relating them, respectively, to the polarized dipole amplitudes for the quark and gluon helicities defined in our earlier works. Using the small-x evolution equations derived for these polarized dipole amplitudes earlier we arrive at the following small-x asymptotics of the quark and gluon OAM distributions in the large-N c limit: L q + q ¯<!-- ¯ --> ( x , Q 2 ) = −<!-- - --> Δ<!-- Δ --> Σ<!-- Σ --> ( x , Q 2 ) ∼<!-- ~ --> ( 1 x ) 4 3 α<!-- α --> s N c 2 π<!-- π --> , (1a) L q + q ¯<!-- ¯ --> ( x , Q 2 ) = −<!-- - --> Δ<!-- Δ --> Σ<!-- Σ --> ( x , Q 2 ) ∼<!-- ~ --> ( 1 x ) 4 3 α<!-- α --> s N c 2 π<!-- π --> , (1b)

New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data. Proceedings of RIKEN BNL Research Center Workshop: Small-x Physics in the EIC Era [Slides]

Understanding the high energy limit of hadronic and nuclear collisions is at the forefront of nuclear and particle physics. When boosted to ultrahigh energies, all hadrons and nuclei eventually transform into a universal form of matter called the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). The CGC is characterized by the high density (saturation) of small-x gluons which leads to distinct experimental signatures. Tantalizing hints of the CGC have been observed at HERA, RHIC and the LHC, but the prospects for the discovery of the CGC are more promising at future experiments such as the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL Indeed, according to the National Science Academy report published in 2019, one of the three major goals of the EIC is to address the nature of the gluon saturation. (The other two are the mass and spin structure of the nucleons.) With this in mind, the small-x community is gearing up to meet the challenges of the EIC era. Over the past several years, there has been impressive progress in the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations in the CGC framework of various observables such as single hadron production in proton-nucleus collisions, inclusive and exclusive dijet and trijet production in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS), jet-plus-photon production in DIS, etc. We expect that NLO calculations will be the standard tool to confront future experimental data at the EIC. Another emerging trend of the community is the interplay between small-x physics and spin physics. The RHIC result for the gluon helicity ΔG has underscored the necessity to understand the longitudinal spin structure of the proton at small-x. There have been theoretical indications that a significant fraction of spin and orbital angular momentum is stored in the small-x region. As for the transversely polarized proton, a surprising new connection between the gluon Sivers function at small-x and the QCD Odderon has been pointed out and its implications at the EIC has been discussed. In view of these developments, we think it is timely to organize a dedicated workshop on small-x physics to summarize the present status of the field and to discuss future directions. A major focus of this workshop will be to identify outstanding problems that could significantly benefit from collaborative efforts amongst scientists working on formal, phenomenological, and computational aspects of small-x physics.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetries of inclusive jet and dijet production at STAR

The STAR experiment probes the gluon helicity distribution \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) using collisions of longitudinally polarized protons at \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 ~GeV and \sqrt{s} = 510 s = 510 ~GeV. \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) can be accessed through the double-spin asymmetries A_{LL} A L L in gluon-dominated hard scattering processes via inclusive jet and dijet production. This proceedings report on recent measurements of A_{LL} A L L for inclusive jets and dijets in the mid-pseudorapidity ( |\eta| < 1 | η | < 1 ) and dijets in the intermediate pseudrapidity ( -0.8 < \eta < 1.8 − 0.8 < η < 1.8 ) regions. These measurements provide sensitivity to \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) for gluon momentum fractions x x from \simeq 0.5 ≃ 0.5 down to \simeq 0.004 ≃ 0.004 . The results are in good agreement with previous STAR measurements and recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data.

Rational QCD loop amplitudes and quantum theories on twistor space

We show how curing an anomaly of the twistor uplift of self-dual Yang-Mills theory implies linear relations among one-loop, n-gluon, color-ordered subamplitudes in QCD, when all n gluon helicities are positive, or when exactly one is negative. We compute the number of linearly independent subamplitudes as determined by these relations, in terms of unsigned Stirling numbers. Then we use a momentum-twistor parametrization to show that there are no further linear dependencies.

EIC impact on un/polarized collinear PDFs

We present an impact study of future EIC measurements on our knowledge of PDFs, using the JAM Monte Carlo global QCD analysis framework. We study the effect of EIC pseudo-data for polarization asymmetries on quark and gluon helicity distributions in the proton. An overview of the impact of future inclusive DIS and parity-violating DIS data on unpolarized PDFs is also shown.

Probing the Gluon Orbital Angular Momentum at the EIC

In these proceedings, we calculate double-spin asymmetry (DSA) in exclusive dijet production in ep collisions and we demonstrate for the first time that the cos(Φ) angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton is a simultaneous probe of the gluon orbital angular momentum and its interplay with the gluon helicity. We make a rough estimate of the DSA for the kinematics of the Electron–Ion Collider.

Helicity evolution at small x : quark to gluon and gluon to quark transition operators

We include the quark to gluon and gluon to quark shock-wave transition operators into the small Bjorken-x evolution equations for helicity in the flavor-singlet channel derived earlier in [1,2,3]. While such transitions do not affect the large-N c version of the evolution equations for helicity, the large-N c & N f equations are affected. (N c and N f are the numbers of quark colors and flavors, respectively.) We derive the corresponding corrected large-N c & N f equations for the polarized dipole amplitudes contributing to the flavor-singlet quark and gluon helicity distributions in the double-logarithmic approximation (DLA), resumming powers of α s ln 2 (1/x) with αs the strong coupling constant. We solve these equations iteratively and extract the polarized splitting functions up to four loops. We show that our splitting functions agree with the fixed-order perturbative calculations up to and including the existing three-loops results [4,5,6,7]. Similar to the large-Nc helicity evolution in the shock-wave approach [8], our large-N c & N f small-x splitting functions agree with those obtained in the infrared evolution equations framework from [9, 10] up to three loops, but appear to slightly disagree at four loops.
