First study of polarized proton-proton scattering with small-𝑥 helicity evolution

We perform a phenomenological study of helicity-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) using small-𝑥 helicity evolution equations, incorporating for the first time single-inclusive jet production data in polarized proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) scattering at parton momentum fractions 𝑥 <0.1. We also simultaneously include double-longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering probing 𝑥 <0.1. Employing the polarized small-𝑥 pure-glue calculation of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → 𝑔⁡𝑋 for the jet production cross section, we modify the large-𝑁 𝑐 &𝑁 𝑓 KPS-CTT evolution equations by setting 𝑁 𝑓 = 0 to replicate the large-𝑁𝑐 (pure-glue) limit, while retaining external quark flavors for the spinor field operators. We find that the 𝑝⁢𝑝 data have a considerable impact on the helicity PDFs at small 𝑥, reducing their uncertainties and leading to a total quark and gluon helicity in the proton for 𝑥 < 0.1 of −0.04 ±0.23. Combining our analysis with a recent JAM helicity PDF analysis of the world polarized data, which includes 𝑥 > 0.1, we find a total quark and gluon helicity contribution for 𝑥 >10 −7 of between 0.02 and 0.51.

Quasiclassical evaluation of gluon saturation induced helicity effects

At sub-eikonal order in the high-energy limit, helicity dependences are generally contained in the transverse components of the gluon field. In the gluon saturation regime, novel helicity effects arise from the nonlinear interaction between the eikonal-order longitudinal gluon field and the sub-eikonal-order transverse gluon field. We derive this saturation induced helicity-dependent field both by solving the classical Yang-Mills equations and through direct diagrammatic calculations. Our analysis shows that the saturation induced helicity effect is intrinsically a two-particle (or multiparticle) correlation effect, rather than a single-particle distribution effect. Furthermore, we evaluate this effect in the context of double-spin asymmetry for incoherent diffractive dijet production in longitudinally polarized electron-nucleus collisions, using a simplified helicity-extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. We find that the saturation induced helicity effect further suppresses the back-to-back peak in the dijet azimuthal angle correlation, with a magnitude comparable to that of the direct helicity effect. This gluon saturation induced helicity effect may offer a novel avenue to probe gluon saturation in polarized collisions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Exploring orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit correlations for gluons at the Electron-Ion Collider

In our previous work [S. Bhattacharya , ], we introduced a pioneering observable aimed at experimentally detecting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of gluons. Our focus was on the longitudinal double spin asymmetry observed in exclusive dijet production during electron-proton scattering. We demonstrated the sensitivity of the cos ϕ angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton as a probe for gluon OAM at small x and its intricate interplay with gluon helicity. This current work provides a comprehensive exposition, diving further into the aforementioned calculation with added elaboration and in-depth analysis. We reveal that, in addition to the gluon OAM, one also gains access to the spin-orbit correlation of gluons. We supplement our work with a detailed numerical analysis of our observables for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider. In addition to dijet production, we also consider the recently proposed semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering process, which potentially offers experimental advantages over dijet measurements. Finally, we investigate quark-channel contributions to these processes and find an unexpected breakdown of collinear factorization. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Rational QCD loop amplitudes and quantum theories on twistor space

We show how curing an anomaly of the twistor uplift of self-dual Yang-Mills theory implies linear relations among one-loop, n-gluon, color-ordered subamplitudes in QCD, when all n gluon helicities are positive, or when exactly one is negative. We compute the number of linearly independent subamplitudes as determined by these relations, in terms of unsigned Stirling numbers. Then we use a momentum-twistor parametrization to show that there are no further linear dependencies.

Spin Physics at PHENIX

Situated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the PHENIX experiment has for almost two decades been at the forefront of investigations into spin structure and dynamics in high-energy nuclear physics. Although decommissioned in 2016, the PHENIX collaboration has released a number of new results over the past several years that continue to inform the field. Recent longitudinal spin measurements uncover the role of gluon and sea quark polarization in the proton. Transverse spin measurements probe the transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions and higher-twist multiparton correlators that are needed to fully explain partonic dynamics in the initial and final state. Additionally, the effects of heavy ions on spin have been studied by comparing transverse spin measurements between p+p and p+A collisions. These recent results and their wider implications are presented.

Off forward non- s -channel helicity conserving contributions to exclusive vector quarkonium production from the spin dependent BFKL Pomeron

A novel contribution to off forward, exclusive vector quarkonium production, γ(*)+p → V+p, at high energy is derived which corresponds to a t-channel exchange of a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) hard Pomeron, with a helicity flip of the proton. This “spin-dependent BFKL Pomeron” is required in a consistent expansion in powers of the momentum transfer t ≈−Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$ beyond first order. The spin-dependent Pomeron violates s-channel helicity conservation at O(Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$), and beyond. Expanding to leading twist only, it corresponds to generalized parton distributions E g (x,t) for vanishing skewness. We derive explicit expressions for the eikonal BFKL amplitudes, to all orders in dipole size times momentum transfer, for all helicity configurations of the particles in the initial and final states. We also provide numerical estimates of the helicity flip two gluon exchange amplitude at moderate x from a light cone quark model of the proton. The spin dependent BFKL Pomeron could, in principle, be discovered via double spin asymmetries in e+p → e+p+J/ψ with a transversely polarized proton and longitudinally polarized electron in the initial state.

Proton spin from small-x with constraints from the valence quark model

We apply the valence quark model [1] to constrain the non-perturbative initial condition for the small-x helicity evolution. The remaining free parameters are constrained by performing a global analysis akin to [2] to the available polarized small-x deep inelastic scattering data. A good description of the world data is obtained with only 8 free parameters. The model parameters are tightly constrained by the data, allowing us to predict the proton polarized structure function $g^p_1$ to be negative at small x. Furthermore, we obtain the small-x quark and gluon spins to give a contribution $\int^{0.1}_{10^{-5}} dx (\frac{1}{2}\Delta\Sigma + \Delta{G}) = 0.63 ± 0.10$ or $1.35 ± 0.16$ (or to the proton spin, depending on the applied running coupling prescription.

Uniqueness of MHV Gravity Amplitudes

We investigate MHV tree-level gravity amplitudes as defined on the spinor-helicity variety. Unlike their gluon counterparts, the gravity amplitudes do not have logarithmic singularities and do not admit Amplituhedron-like construction. Importantly, they are not determined just by their singularities, but rather their numerators have interesting zeroes. We make a conjecture about the uniqueness of the numerator and explore this feature from a more mathematical perspective. This leads us to a new approach for examining adjoints. We outline steps of our proposed proof and provide computational evidence for its validity in specific cases.

Spin-orbit entanglement in the Color Glass Condensate

We compute the spin-orbit correlations of quarks and gluons at small-x and show that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of individual partons are strongly anti-aligned even in unpolarized or spinless hadrons and nuclei. Combined with the fact that gluons in the Color Glass Condensate are linearly polarized, our finding indicates that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of single gluons are maximally entangled in a quantum mechanical sense.

Split-helicity tree amplitudes and flag cluster algebras

Recent work has uncovered a connection between the symbol letters of general massless scattering and (permutations of) cluster variables of partial flag varieties. In this paper we explore the cluster adjacency of tree-level gluon amplitudes, specifically focusing on split-helicity amplitudes which can be written in closed form in terms of zigzag diagrams. We check in several cases, and conjecture in general, that the poles in each term satisfy cluster adjacency under a set of permutations that is built from arc permutations of the corresponding zigzag.

Eikonal spin-dependent odderon and gluon Sivers function of a proton and its small-𝑥 evolution

The matrix element in the proton of the eikonal Odderon operator, with a helicity flip, has been shown to correspond to the dipole gluon Sivers function. We employ a three quark light-front model of the proton to determine the Sivers function at moderately small 𝑥 0 ∼ 0.1 and transverse momentum 𝑘 ⊥ ≲ 1 GeV. The model light-cone (LC) wave function predicts the properties of 𝑥⁢𝑓$^{⊥⁢𝑔}_{1⁢𝑇⁡}$(𝑥,𝑘 ⊥ ) such as its overall magnitude, the position of its peak in 𝑘 ⊥ , and its behavior at small 𝑘 ⊥ . We then compute numerically the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov anomalous dimension characterizing the power-law tail at 𝑘 ⊥ ≳ 1.5 GeV of the gluon Sivers function at small (but preasymptotic) LC momentum fractions 𝑥 ∼ 𝑥 0 ⁢𝑒 −1/𝛼 𝑠 : 𝑥⁢𝑓$^{⊥⁢𝑔}_{1⁢𝑇⁡}$⁡(𝑥,𝑘 ⊥ ) ∼ 𝑘$^{−3.3}_{⊥}$.

Experimental scheme for polarizing boron nuclei

Unraveling the internal structure of hadrons and nuclei in terms of the quarks and gluons of quantum chromodynamics is a central focus of current nuclear physics research. Directly observing gluonic states in the nucleus would be groundbreaking and is an objective of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Over 30 years ago, Jaffe and Manohar [R. L. Jaffe and A. Manohar, Phys. Lett. B 223 , 218 (1989)] identified a new double-helicity flip structure function, directly sensitive to exotic gluons. They pointed out that this could be measured in inclusive high-energy electron scattering from a transversely polarized nuclear target with spin 𝐼 ≥ 1. Here, in this work, we identify the spin-3 nucleus boron-10 as a particularly interesting system to search for exotic gluons. Leveraging technical advances in atomic physics over the past decade, we outline an experimental scheme to directly optically pump a beam of stable boron atoms to polarize the nuclear spin. Technical challenges to realize a spin-polarized beam of boron-10 in the EIC are discussed. The proposed scheme will also polarize the 11 B nucleus, which could significantly enhance the proton-boron fusion cross section.

Maximally entangled gluons for any x

Individual quarks and gluons at small x inside an unpolarized hadron can be regarded as Bell states in which qubits in the spin and orbital angular momentum spaces are maximally entangled. Using the machinery of quantum information science, we generalize this observation to all values 0 < x <1 and describe gluons (but not quarks) as maximally entangled states between a qubit and a qudit. We introduce the conditional probability distribution P⁡(l z |s z ) of a gluon’s orbital angular momentum l z given its helicity s z . Restricting to the three states l z =0,±1, which constitute a qutrit, we explicitly compute P as a function of x.

String-based axial and helicity-flip GPDs: A comparison to lattice QCD

We construct an analytic, string-based representation of the nucleon’s axial and helicity-flip conformal moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that holds for skewness and for both the quark and gluon channels. The starting point is the Mellin-Barnes resummation of the conformal partial-wave expansion, where the moments are parametrized by open- (Reggeon) and closed-string (Pomeron) trajectories with slopes determined by experimental form factors and meson/glueball spectroscopy. The forward limits are fixed by the empirical unpolarized and polarized parton distributions. Polynomiality, crossing symmetry, and support are satisfied by construction. After next-to-leading order Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi/Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution to μ = 2 GeV our analytic framework (i) reproduces some of the currently available lattice moments of E and H˜ in the nonsinglet sector, (ii) predicts sea-quark and gluon polarized moments that will be testable by forthcoming simulations and experiments at Jefferson Lab and the future Electron-Ion Collider, and (iii) yields axial and helicity-flip GPDs in x-space in reasonable agreement with lattice QCD.

Long range energy-energy correlator at the LHC

We study the forward-backward azimuthal angular correlations of hadrons in association with multiparticle production in the central rapidity region in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. We apply the nucleon energy-energy correlator framework, where the spinning gluon distribution introduces a nontrivial cos⁡(2⁢𝜙) asymmetries. We will demonstrate that the fundamental helicity structure of quantym chromodynamics (QCD) amplitudes predicts a unique power counting rule: cos⁡(2⁢𝜙) asymmetry starts at 𝒪⁡(𝛼$^{2}_{s}$) order for dijet, 𝒪⁡(𝛼 𝑠 ) for three jet and 𝒪⁡(1) for four (and more) jet productions. Our results will help us to understand the longstanding puzzle of nearside ridge behavior observed in high multiplicity events of 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at the LHC.

Directed flow from parton spin-orbit coupling in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions

We point out a novel mechanism to generate cos φ two-particle azimuthal correlation (‘directed flow’) in unpolarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions in the forward rapidity region of the projectile proton. This is a direct consequence of the recently discovered strong spin-orbit coupling in gluons at small-x. The observable simultaneously serves as a unique probe into the double helicity parton distribution functions of the proton.

Rapidity-dependent spin decomposition of the nucleon

We revisit the two-dimensional Fourier transform of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at nonzero skewness. At 𝜂 = 0 it reduces to the standard impact-parameter density, while at 𝜂 ≠ 0 it is an off-forward amplitude that we interpret as a genuine parton–nucleon correlation. Its overall strength (the transverse-plane integral of the density) is fixed by the GPD at the kinematic point 𝑡 =−𝑐 𝜂 =−4⁢𝜂 2 ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{𝑁}$/(1 − 𝜂 2 ) and decreases monotonically with the rapidity gap Δ⁢𝑦 = ln⁡[(1+𝜂)/(1−𝜂)] = 2 artanh⁡(𝜂). This rapidity dependence implies rapidity-modified Ji identities that connect helicity, orbital, and total angular momenta of the correlation in closed form. To quantify these effects, we construct leading-twist quark and gluon GPDs in a string-based conformal framework: conformal moments are parametrized by linear open- and closed-string Regge trajectories with slopes constrained by parton distribution functions (PDFs), hadron/glueball spectroscopy, and form-factor data, and GPDs are reconstructed over the full (𝑥,𝜂,𝑡) domain by Mellin-Barnes inversion with next-to-leading order evolution. We find qualitative agreement (and fair quantitative agreement within quoted uncertainties) for several moments and selected nonsinglet 𝑥-space channels at 𝜇 = 2 GeV when compared with lattice QCD, while we also identify channels with visible tension and discuss likely sources (PDF priors and 𝑡-slope systematics).

Moments of axial-vector GPD from lattice QCD: quark helicity, orbital angular momentum, and spin-orbit correlation

In this work, we present a lattice QCD calculation of the Mellin moments of the twist-2 axial-vector generalized parton distribution (GPD), $\overset{\sim }{H}\left(x,\xi, t\right)$ , at zero skewness, ξ, with multiple values of the momentum transfer, t. Our analysis employs the short-distance factorization framework on ratio-scheme renormalized quasi-GPD matrix elements. The calculations are based on an N f = 2 + 1 + 1 twisted mass fermions ensemble with clover improvement, a lattice spacing of a = 0.093 fm, and a pion mass of m π = 260 MeV. We consider both the iso-vector and iso-scalar cases, utilizing next-to-leading-order perturbative matching while omitting the disconnected contributions and gluon mixing in the iso-scalar case. For the first time, we determine the Mellin moments of $\overset{\sim }{H}$ up to the fifth order. From these moments, we discuss the quark helicity and orbital angular momentum contributions to the nucleon spin, as well as the spin-orbit correlations of the quarks. Additionally, we perform a Fourier transform over the momentum transfer, which allows us to explore the spin structure in the impact-parameter space.
