Half-Tone Video Images Of Drifting Sinusoidal Gratings

Digital technique for generation of slowly moving video image of sinusoidal grating avoids difficulty of transferring full image data from disk storage to image memory at conventional frame rates. Depends partly on trigonometric identity by which moving sinusoidal grating decomposed into two stationary patterns spatially and temporally modulated in quadrature. Makes motion appear smooth, even at speeds much less than one-tenth picture element per frame period. Applicable to digital video system in which image memory consists of at least 2 bits per picture element, and final brightness of picture element determined by contents of "lookup-table" memory programmed anew each frame period and indexed by coordinates of each picture element.

Optical computing with laser light

Linear and nonlinear optical processing techniques (Fourier transformation, convolution and correlation, arithmetic operations - addition and subtraction with gratings, generalized orthogonal transformations; theta modulation, half-tone screen process, optical feedback) for mathematical computations are reviewed. The use of gratings and computer holograms in addition, subtraction, differentiation, and application of generalized transformations is discussed. Use of nonlinear optical elements with or without optical coherent feedback in such nonlinear operations as taking logarithms and thresholding is described. Applications in hybrid systems incorporating digital computer and optical processor with real-time interface devices, or optical threshold and logic devices for parallel processing to apply digital techniques to optical information are considered.

On structural patterns in H II regions

High-resolution photographs of H II regions show that a large number of stars embedded in the nebulosities appear to be surrounded by 'emply' spaces. This phenomenon seems to be quite common but has escaped attention up to now. The effect is not a photographic one, nor does it arise in the half-tone reproduction processes employed in publications, but no satisfactory explanation is apparent.

The JWST/NIRCam Coronagraph Flight Occulters

The NIRCam instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope will have a Lyot coronagraph for high contrast imaging of extrasolar planets and circumstellar disks at lambda = 2 - 5 micrometers. Half-tone patterns are used to create graded-transmission image plane masks. These are generated using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching of a metal layer on an antireflection coated sapphire substrate. We report here on the manufacture and evaluation of the flight occulters.

Generation of Precision Stimuli for Web-based and At-home Psychophysics

This oral presentation will present methods for “linearizing” a display to enable the delivery of precisely controlled stimuli in vision experiments, performing colorimetric calibrations using common objects, and testing for spatial and temporal nonlinearities.
