TMD Handbook

This handbook provides a comprehensive review of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, commonly referred to as transverse momentum distributions (TMDs). TMDs describe the distribution of partons inside the proton and other hadrons with respect to both their longitudinal and transverse momenta. They provide unique insight into the internal momentum and spin structure of hadrons, and are a key ingredient in the description of many collider physics cross sections. Understanding TMDs requires a combination of theoretical techniques from quantum field theory, nonperturbative calculations using lattice QCD, and phenomenological analysis of experimental data. The handbook covers a wide range of topics, from theoretical foundations to experimental analyses, as well as recent developments and future directions. It is intended to provide an essential reference for researchers and graduate students interested in understanding the structure of hadrons and the dynamics of partons in high energy collisions.

Availability of Shielding Benchmark Experiment Data in the ICSBEP Handbook

The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Projects (ICSBEP) has over two decades of experience under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to identify, evaluate, and compile a comprehensive data set of criticality safety benchmark data [1]. The activities of the ICSBEP have led to the continued success of the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP Handbook) [2]. The contents of the ICSBEP Handbook include benchmark specifications derived from nuclear facilities around the world, which have been utilized to support criticality safety efforts and also integral testing of nuclear data [3]. The 2020 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook will include data from 582 evaluations containing benchmark specifications for 5,053 critical, subcritical, or near-critical configurations. There are seven criticality-alarm-placement/shielding evaluations containing a total of 45 benchmark configurations, and ten fundamental physics evaluations containing a total of 237 measurements relevant to criticality safety applications. The purpose of this paper is to summarize those benchmarks relative to validation needs in shielding applications currently found within the ICSBEP Handbook. The current and future plans of shielding benchmarks with regards to the ICSBEP will also be discussed.

Contribution to the IRPHEP handbook since Physor 2018

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Reactor Physics Experiment Evaluation Project (IRPhEP) continue to preserve and evaluate integral reactor physics experiment data to support nuclear energy and technology needs. International contributions are collated within the International Handbook of Evaluated Reactor Physics Benchmark Experiments (IRPhEP Handbook). The 2021 edition of the IRPhEP Handbook now contains data for 57 unique nuclear facilities with benchmark specifications for 169 experimental series, of which four are draft evaluations. Distributed with the IRPhEP Handbook and available online is the IRPhEP Database and Analysis Tool (IDAT), allowing users to search and interrogate the data. Since Physor 2018, there have been 11 minor revisions to existing benchmark evaluations, significant revisions to two evaluations, one draft evaluation, and nine new evaluations. The corona virus pandemic has delayed international activities supporting the production of additional content for the IRPhEP Handbook. However, efforts continue for numerous endeavors to complete new reactor physics benchmark evaluations to support current and future validation needs. Those interested in serving as evaluators and/or reviewers are strongly encouraged to participate. This paper provides a summary of IRPhEP content and activities since Physor 2018. (authors)

HANDBOOK BEST PRACTICES FOR ORGANIZING PUBLIC E WASTE COLLECTION EVENTS Indoor and Outdoor Settings

This handbook was created to share best practices of organizing public e-waste collection events in the United States. The steps and checklists outlined in this handbook have been drawn from Sunnking’s decade’s long experience of organizing large scale outdoor collection events in New York. These practices have been verified by INL and ECyclers of Idaho to work well for both indoor and outdoor events in Idaho at a smaller scale. Understanding that the local conditions vary significantly, we have compiled key deciding factors to share in this handbook. We hope that by following these steps, you will succeed in organizing your own events. Although e-waste events typically require careful logistics planning due to the nature of the materials, the experience is very rewarding to bring the community together.

Update on ASME AG-1 and Revision of the DOE Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook - 20536

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers AG-1 Code on Nuclear Air and Gas Treatment is updated every two years. This paper provides an overview of issues being discussed within AG-1 committee meetings and revisions that will be included in the next version of the code. Additional information is provided on issues being discussed ranging from media velocity limits, control of airflow using actual versus and standard cubic feet per minute. Navigation and identification of applicable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter code sections can be confusing for those unfamiliar with AG-1. A general reorganization of filtration code sections clarifies geometry, flow, and performance envelopes for nuclear grade HEPA filters. The initial step consists of establishment of Section FN covering qualification of conventional, ceramic, metal, and high strength fibrous glass media. Future filter sections are currently expected to be characterized by geometry and flow direction (axial vs. radial). The Department of Energy's (DOE) Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook (NACH) is also undergoing revision. An update on the status of that effort, along with issues and changes being considered. The original charter of the AG-1 Code was specific to commercial nuclear power plants, and to safety-related air cleaning systems. This has evolved over the years to include normal non-safety ventilation systems and process gas systems. Corollary guidance for DOE facilities has been available in several editions of the Nuclear Air Cleaning Handbook, starting with ORNL-NSIC 65. The latest edition of the Handbook, 2003, is undergoing revision and modifications. (authors)

Advanced Moderator Material Handbook

High hydrogen density moderators such as metal hydrides are an important research topic within the DOE NE Microreactor Research, Development, and Deployment (RD&D) Program due to their ability to retain hydrogen to much higher temperatures than other hydrogenous media. This class of moderators, which includes yttrium dihydride (YH 2 ), thermalizes neutrons in the system such that the overall fuel mass or the required uranium enrichment in the system can be significantly reduced. Knowledge of material properties, both in the as-fabricated and irradiated state, are important to understanding moderator performance during steady-state and transient reactor operation. Provided in this document is the Advanced Moderator Material Handbook, which provides a detailed summary of the literature data on yttrium dihydride, thermomechanical and other property data, and a critical evaluation of that data. This handbook also provides a description of ongoing experiments to understand in-reactor performance, such as irradiations in ATR, as well as nuclear data from an integral critical experiment at NCERC. The majority of this report focuses on measured values but also includes some modeling results for comparison where applicable.

Status of HEU-Pb in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook

The Department of Energy invests tens of millions of dollars each year to develop the next generation of nuclear engineering modeling & simulation (M&S) tools. These tools are used to analyze advanced reactor designs and the safety of current nuclear operations. As computers become more powerful, we are able to enhance resolution in our calculations. This improved resolution is taking us to a point where the limitations of simulation capability are in the quality of data, including our ability to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of the data. In order to model systems of interest with increasing accuracy, the industry must improve key nuclear data measurements. Thus, M&S tools need evaluated and quality-assured experimental data for validation purposes. The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) compiles and evaluates experiment data in a handbook that can be used by criticality safety engineers and others to validate computer codes and cross-section libraries at nuclear facilities. Both critical and subcritical experiments are included in the handbook. Figure 1 organizes all the benchmark evaluations that have been performed by the isotope of interest, in this case Pb, and the average neutron energy the system. Compared to other isotopes of interest for nuclear applications, there are few benchmark evaluations for Pb systems. The lack of integral measurements to determine errors in Pb cross-section data has caused the latest nuclear cross-section libraries to over/underestimate k eff compared to experimental results. Therefore, this evaluation fills an important knowledge gap in benchmark evaluations.

Status of the CERBERUS Evaluation for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook

Modeling & Simulation (M&S) tools are used to analyze advanced reactor designs and the safety of current nuclear operations. As computers continue to improve, we are able to enhance resolution in our calculations. Therefore, the limitations of simulation capability are in the quality of data that is being used, including our ability to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity of that data. In order to model systems of interest with increasing accuracy, the industry must improve key nuclear data measurements. The International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) compiles and evaluates experiment data in a handbook that can be used by criticality safety engineers and others to validate computer codes and cross section libraries at nuclear facilities. Both critical and subcritical experiments are included in the handbook. These experiments, along with differential measurements, can help improve the quality of nuclear data. Concerns regarding the accuracy of Cu nuclear data have been published. The large values and trend of C-E for the Zeus intermediate energy benchmark, being one of the primary examples. Furthermore, very few experiments have been designed to be sensitive to Cu (as shown in Figure 1), so an integral, critical experiment is needed to help resolve these differences.

Report on the Incorporation of Post-Irradiation Examination Results of Yttrium Hydride for Advanced Moderator Handbook

Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Microreactor program (MRP) aims to provide the fundamental data to enable the development of microreactors. As such, material property data of critical materials for microreactor technologies are researched. Because substoichiometric yttrium dihydride (YHx, where x<2) is considered as a potential solid neutron moderator, its material property data has been combined in the Advanced Moderator Material Handbook which includes thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of YHx with the exception of irradiated material’s properties due to limited PIE. To fill the knowledge gap for the irradiated YHx, specimens and irradiation capsules were prepared at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Specimens were irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s). post-irradiation examination (PIE) was performed at INL’s Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC). This report compiles the PIE results of irradiated YHx specimens through fiscal years 2022 and 2023 (FY22-23) . The PIE data will directly be incorporated into the newer version of the Advanced Moderator Material Handbook. The main takeaways include that (i) the geometrical stability and mechanical integrity of YHx was intact with couple exceptions after high-temperature irradiations (600-800°C), (ii) hydrogen content variation due to manufacturing or irradiation in YHx caused visible surface discoloration, that is also related to the microstructural changes, (iii) qualitative comparisons of PIE methods implied that H retention was significantly higher at 600°C as compared to 800°C, (iv) thermal properties included signatures correlated with the H loss or re-gain, (v) importance of manufacturing readiness and initial as-manufactured specimens history was emphasized, (vi) the needs of targeted irradiations focusing on temperature and time parameters and very targeted PIE were specified.

The status of the Japanese material properties handbook and the challenge to facilitate structural design criteria for DEMO in-vessel components

This work summarizes the current status of the material properties handbook for a structural design using Japanese reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steel F82H. Specifically, the key structural parameters, e.g. time-independent/dependent design stresses and fatigue design curves, were determined by following the French structural design code RCC-MRx. Moreover, under the Japan–U.S. collaboration, tensile data were newly added to the benchmark heavy irradiation data up to 80 dpa, as critical input information in the intermediate check and review in Japan. Furthermore, the status of structural material data and the near-term and long-term issues were clarified by the evaluation using the attribute guides. In parallel, the structural design approaches, which were newly introduced and extended to cope with the structural design issues under the complex environmental conditions peculiar to the DEMO reactor, were noted with the initial R&D results. Of the many design issues, the multi-axial loading conditions due to the complexity of the DEMO reactor as well as the coolant compatibility and the irradiation effect are mentioned. For example, in the paper, multi-axial fatigue–creep testing and evaluation using the modified universal slope method and brittle/ductile fracture testing and evaluation using the local approach are explained toward DEMO.

Stereo Cameras for Clouds (STEREOCAM) Instrument Handbook

The three pairs of stereo camera setups aim to provide synchronized and stereo calibrated time series of images that can be used for 3D cloud mask reconstruction. Each camera pair is positioned at approximately 120 degrees from the other pair, with a 17o-19o pitch angle from the ground, and at 5-6 km distance from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Central Facility at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory to cover the region from northeast, northwest, and southern views. Images from both cameras of the same stereo setup can be paired together to obtain 3D reconstruction by triangulation. 3D reconstructions from the ring of three stereo pairs can be combined together to generate a 3D mask from surrounding views. This handbook delivers all stereo reconstruction parameters of the cameras necessary to make 3D reconstructions from the stereo camera images.
